A Stuffed Cheonma in my Head - Chapter 168
Only Noblemtl
Episode 168. Camus the Hunter
The carriage that Shushuruta brought was originally a cart.
Because it was a carriage converted from a cart, there was ample space to load the horse.
The only flaw is that there are no chairs or windows.
We loaded the sack containing the water into the back of the carriage and drove off.
Shushuruta and I watched in a daze as Camus sat on the floor, arranging and organizing his bow, arrows, and sword.
The sight was like that of a seasoned hunter.
Suddenly, Camus lifted his head from wiping his knife on a cloth, glanced at us, then lowered his gaze and spoke curtly.
“Hold on to your worries. I will not let a single devil get near you.”
Shushuruta and I made eye contact and then looked back at Camus.
I didn’t really have anything to say, but I thought he would feel embarrassed if I didn’t answer, so I said whatever.
“This is as filling as beef jerky.”
Camus chuckled and wiped the blade with a cloth.
As I was watching the scene, I suddenly became curious and asked a question.
“You said you were a mercenary. Are you a free mercenary?”
Camus answered.
“yes.”
A free mercenary is a mercenary who does not belong to a specific mercenary group.
I pointed to the sack.
“That guy was being tracked by someone on commission?”
Camus nodded.
“It was a guy I had been chasing for a whole week. He was so fast, it was impossible to catch up.”
“C grade?”
“C grade.”
As expected, that seemed to be the case.
The flying demons are so hard to catch that the commission fee doubles, but at that level, you can play for an entire month.
It’s not just the commission. It’s also quite rare, so you could probably sell the feathers and wings for a high price.
So, I guess they take it all in a sack without disassembling it separately.
As if to prove it, a faint smile appeared on the lips of the hunter who had succeeded in the hunt.
The happy hunter suddenly looked up from his gear and looked at Shushuruta.
“ah.”
Shushuruta, who had been staring at Camus, looked away in embarrassment.
Camus, seeing such a Shushuruta, smiled and pointed to his blindfold.
“Is this what you mean?”
It seemed like Shushuruta was staring intently at his blindfold.
I immediately scolded my rude sister.
“This guy. How can you be rude to the person who saved your life? Where did you learn to be such a brat? You should apologize right now.”
As Shushuruta hesitated and was about to really bang her head, Camus stopped her with a laugh.
“It’s okay. It’s nothing special. If you’re curious, you can take a look.”
“… … .”
I stared blankly at him, who had a good-natured smile on his face.
If I had done that, I would have sworn at you.
He was strangely strict only with me.
Shushuruta bowed his head sullenly.
“sorry…….”
Anyway, since it wasn’t rude, I asked right away.
Because I was curious anyway.
“What happened to one eye?”
“I was attacked by a demon.”
Camus answered calmly and lifted his blindfold.
There, a rough scar was drawn vertically across the eyelid, looking fierce.
Well, he’s half blind.
I wasn’t sure if I would join the blind association.
I feel like I’m going to get protests from other blind people.
Eventually, I gave up, but I heard Shushuruta gasp in surprise from the side.
Camus, seeing this, smiled and began to tell a tale of bravery.
“It was winter. The day the whole world turned white. I was killing time at the guild, drinking like I usually do. Then the door slammed open and Tommy came rushing in, saying there was an urgent request. I wondered what it was, and it turned out that a B-class demon had appeared. He was shaking up a small village.”
Camus stroked his beard as if recalling that time.
“A B-rank demon… Just thinking about it makes my spine tingle. But at the time, there were no gold-rank mercenaries in the guild. Still, there were several silver-rank mercenaries, so we had no choice but to go. Since it was an urgent request, the commission was good. Soon, six silver-rank mercenaries joined forces and rushed to capture that one guy.”
He stopped checking his equipment and took a square gray canteen from his bosom and took a sip.
“When we arrived in a hurry by carriage, the village was already in ruins. Blood seeped into the eyes and everything was red. That’s why it looked even more eerie. We knew that if we left it alone, other villages would suffer the same fate. We immediately tracked down the guy.”
He offered me a water bottle, so I took it and, sure enough, it was liquor.
I took a sip and handed it back.
“The pursuit was not difficult. Trees were lying here and there, and we were able to catch up with it, not only by leaving footprints but also by running with blood. We caught up with it shortly after. It was a big bear-like creature, so big that it made all the other demons we had seen look cute.”
Shushuruta and I were soon absorbed in his story.
Even the heavenly horse listened quietly.
“We decided to find a good empty space for fighting and lure the thing there. First, we trampled the snow in the empty space that will become the battlefield. We prepared so that we could quickly escape in case of an emergency. If we didn’t trample it like that, the snow would slow our movements and we might easily be hit by the thing’s counterattack.”
Shushuruta’s eyes sparkled, and I nodded my head in excitement.
Camus smiled faintly, seeming to like the listener’s attitude, and continued his story.
“After I finished preparing, I lured him. I can still vividly see that scene. The guy who was luring him was caught by him and crushed in one blow. It was much faster than I expected. Who would have thought that he would suddenly switch to all fours and run at me like a sprinter?”
Camus took a sip of his liquor and said:
“Someone shouted, and that was the signal for us to all throw our spears at him. All the spears we threw pierced his body, but he became even more ferocious. One of the guys who rushed at him with a spear and sword fell down in an instant. He was the biggest and strongest of us, and he flew like a doll. But we shouted and rushed at him even harder. We knew that if we didn’t kill him, we would die.”
After listening to them, I got the feeling that they weren’t your average seasoned mercenaries.
No one ran away.
“I threw my spear and then fell back, aiming for the eye with my bow, and it must have been quite annoying because the others ignored me and rushed at me. I quickly climbed up the tree behind me. I swear I’ve never climbed a tree so fast in my life.”
When I looked at my hands, I saw that they were already covered in sweat.
“The bastard let out a roar and hit the tree. Boom! It shook violently, but it didn’t break. It was pretty thick. The other guys took advantage of that moment to stab the bastard from behind. But the bastard didn’t care and just aimed for me. After hitting it three or four more times, the tree finally fell with a crackling sound. The bastard opened his mouth wide to eat me in one bite. His teeth were fierce. I could hear the bastard’s heavy breathing so vividly that I could almost feel it.”
Gulp.
The sound of Shushuruta swallowing his saliva was particularly loud.
“I drew my sword in a flash, then fell from the falling tree and stabbed the guy in the neck with my sword. A huge amount of bright red blood spurted out from the back of his neck like a fountain. For a moment, a bloody rainbow filled my eyes. The guy struggled, but I gritted my teeth and somehow managed to hold on while stabbing him in. I knew that if I missed, I would die. The guy went berserk and swung his front legs wildly.”
Camus pointed to my blindfold.
“That’s when I got scratched.”
“ah…….”
Shushuruta sighed.
“Even at that moment when my eyes were about to gouged out, I held on with all my might, and the bastard slowly slowed down… … and then with a thud! He fell down. That’s how I succeeded in hunting the B-class demon beast.”
The story is over.
But as is often the case with great stories, the aftertaste lingered around in silence.
Camus looked up, lost in thought for a moment, and muttered.
“I still can’t forget the bright red rainbow sprinkled across that white snow field.”
It was a great finish.
I clapped my hands in appreciation.
Because a great story deserves applause.
Then Camus suddenly glared at me.
“Do you know where the hunt took place?”
I blinked at the unexpected question.
“Where did it take place?”
Camus suddenly became angry.
“It happened less than 10 kilometers from here. This is where B-class demons often appear. And you came here with your sisters without any escorts? Are you in your right mind?”
“… … .”
“I’ve seen a lot of guys like you. You must have been a one-man show somewhere else, right? Aren’t you?”
I tried to answer, but Camus didn’t give me a chance to answer.
“But when you’re dealing with a demon, you can’t be that lax. You’ll fall prey to the demon in an instant. I’ve seen plenty of those guys. Carelessness can lead to death. Don’t you know what situation you were in just now? You stupid idiot? Huh? Do you think I’ve seen one or two guys like you? Do you think you’re on a picnic?”
I stared blankly at the man spewing venomous words at me.
This was really ambiguous.
If he had just sworn at me, I could have just beaten him up, but I felt genuine concern in his venomous words, so I did it.
[Wow… I see you keeping your mouth shut. This is precious.]
Thinking about it, I was embarrassed because it seemed like this was the first time I had been unilaterally defeated in an argument without even being able to put up a decent counterattack.
How to deal with well-intentioned insults?
I couldn’t figure it out.
‘No, but why only me?’
When I introduced the two guys as my younger sisters, I felt like I was being singled out by my older brother.
It was unfair.
When I asked Shushuruta for help with my eyes, he didn’t help me and just quietly walked away.
“Where are you looking as I speak? Huh?”
“… … .”
I had no choice but to endure it alone and silently.
Just like he was holding a knife to the back of the devil’s neck.
After spewing out a mixture of advice and harsh words at me for a while, he soon found Linda dozing off on the bench, clicked his tongue, and switched places with her.
“I, I. It’s dangerous. Why don’t you come out right now?”
“… … .”
So Camus took turns driving the carriage with Linda.
He was a man who was angry a lot, but he also worried about others a lot.
He may look rough on the outside, but he’s actually a very kind-hearted man.
I thought he was a very rare man in a world where the opposite is often the case.
Maybe that’s why.
I thought it wouldn’t be bad to go together.
He tells stories so well that he could rival a bard.
Instead of hearing an interesting story, I’d rather get a bowl of curses.
So, the carriage from the cart raced north, carrying the lifeless horse and an angry man.
There are about three days left until Schirnberg.
According to Camus, B-class devils often pop out… … .
I thought that if I was lucky, I might encounter a B-class demon.
“Hehehe.”
Shushuruta looked at me strangely, but I ignored him.
Do you know my heart?
