Episode 33 Pharmacy
Perhaps because of the shade from the pine trees, the snow piled up on the driveway barely melted.
As we went down, pushing through the snow piled up to our waists with a snow shovel, fortunately the snow on the road had melted quite a bit, just like we had seen from the drone.
After looking back at the mountain behind me and the hideout, which was covered in pure white snow and looked like a snow-capped mountain, I shook the snow off my pants and fixed my spear.
There was still a thick layer of snow under the fence, but in the middle of the road, where the sunlight was shining brightly, a faint, dark asphalt was exposed.
I went into the alley with Jongseok, keeping a close eye on my surroundings.
The surroundings were strangely desolate, like a landscape stripped of color.
Not only were there no artificial noises like the sound of cars or the hustle and bustle of people, but even the birds were not flying or chirping, perhaps due to the heavy snowfall.
The crows, waiting for the snow to melt, were also quietly wandering far away in the blue sky with their mouths closed.
All that could be heard was the sloshing sound of the remaining snow under my shoes with every step I took, my low breathing, and the sound of the wind shaking the branches, causing snowballs to fall.
The houses lined up on both sides should have been relatively safe from zombies due to their remote location and high walls, but there was no sign of life at all.
There were quite a few homes that had dogs and cats, but they were all brought indoors, so I couldn’t hear a single bark or movement.
I don’t know if it’s because I can’t overcome the cold and hunger, or if I’m just being extremely careful, but I hope it stays like this until I return.
Because there’s nothing good about encountering either zombies or starving survivors.
“for a moment.”
When I raised my hand, Jong-seok, who had been following me with a very nervous look, quickly lowered his posture.
“why?”
When I pointed to the left fence with my hand, Jong-seok opened his eyes wide in surprise when he saw a Nike sneaker stuck in the snow.
“zombi?”
“I have to check.”
He quickly approached the window and touched the shoe without hesitation.
The shoes fell off limply and the feet that should have been there were nowhere to be seen.
But you must not let your guard down.
I stabbed the snowdrift with my window.
The spear, which had gone deep without resistance, hit the wall, so he quickly pulled it out and stuck it right next to it.
Jong-seok, who had been watching, quickly joined in and kept poking until the snow pile collapsed before putting the window away.
“Even if there’s a zombie in your eyes, it’s probably dormant. It’ll take some time for it to wake up. If you stay calm, you can easily defeat it. If not, you can run away. They can’t chase you now.”
“I know. I told you over and over again.”
Jong-seok, who had become relaxed, stood holding on to the window like a novice climber about to climb a high mountain, and let out a deep sigh.
“Is it because the snow hasn’t melted yet? There aren’t any zombies on the road?”
“Have you forgotten that the military trucks lured you? A lot of the zombies on this street have gone into the traps on the west side. The zombie wave has already burst south, so we’re relieved for now, but we still need to be extremely careful. There are quite a few zombies buried in the snow. The real problem is inside the building. It’s probably full of zombies that haven’t been able to get out.”
I patted Jongseok on the shoulder and started on my way again.
As we descended the slope, the black asphalt of the road gradually became more and more exposed, and the exteriors of the buildings were gradually emerging from the snowdrifts.
A few days later, another cold front will hit and freeze everything, but once the road is open, there will be no stopping the fight for survival and plunder.
I looked back at the path I had walked, feeling the hard feel of the asphalt against the soles of my combat boots.
There were no footprints left on the muddy road where the snow had melted.
*
As we passed the wide intersection, the cross of a church appeared beyond the high-rise buildings that had transformed into snow towers.
“Over there.”
As I was hurriedly walking, pointing with my hand, an eerie sound like a swarm of wasps was heard from somewhere above my head.
Wheeeeeeing.
“behind!”
As soon as I took Jong-seok and hid behind the 1-ton truck that had fallen over, a drone suddenly flew in from beyond the building.
Without even a moment to hesitate or think about whether to use the shotgun, the drone continued flying across the sky and away to the north.
“There are still people flying drones?”
Jong-seok muttered quietly as he stared at the drone disappearing into a dot.
“Drones are common. But they are useless without electricity.”
Suddenly, I remembered the pervert drone that had spied on the inside of a nearby apartment before the world came crashing down.
Is that him?
Even in the midst of the zombie outbreak, there were quite a few large and small drones flying around here and there.
I also flew my drone two or three times a day to scout out what was going on around me.
As the power went out and heavy snow began to fall, drones disappeared like mosquitoes hit by a cold front.
In a situation where people are freezing to death because there is no electricity to turn on the heater, drone batteries can run out in an instant.
Even those lucky enough to have solar panels or gas in their cars might be too busy heating their homes to worry about drones.
I thought I would see it again after the weather completely cleared up, but the drone came out so quickly.
That means he was that tired and hungry.
Once captured by a drone, it is difficult to shake off, so you have no choice but to shoot it down with a shotgun.
It’s better than running around with a drone attached, even if your location is exposed because of gunfire.
Of course, it’s best to just pass it by without seeing it like this.
What was in the north?
If there’s something that would make survivors drool, it’s the Guseo-dong E-Mart.
The warehouse may have already been emptied of its contents during the zombie outbreak, but there may still be some left.
Nongshim warehouse is also over there.
It’s not quite a logistics center, but there’s probably some bottled water and ramen stocked up there.
If a drone went there, it would be quite noisy.
“Let’s hurry.”
I looked around, raised my window, and quietly got up.
*
The pharmacy on the first floor of the medical tower behind the church was not very big, but everything was fine, like supplies that had fallen from the sky.
When I shined a flashlight through the shutter bars, the interior of the pharmacy, shrouded in faint darkness, was clean and well-organized.
There was no sign of looting, no movement in response to the light.
I pushed up the shutter as quietly as possible, shook the locked glass door a few times, and then took out my tactical axe.
When I gestured outside, Jong-seok nodded and turned around to watch both sides of the alley.
He lightly tapped the glass door with the axe, gauging the point of impact, then struck the side of the handle with all his might.
Bang bang bang
pop!
One glass door was shattered by three powerful swings of the axe.
A sharp noise pierced through the still air, so anyone nearby would have surely noticed.
We have to hurry.
I put the axe away and picked up the flashlight and spear.
“If anyone comes, tell me right away.”
“How long does it take?”
“5 minutes.”
“okay.”
I walked into the pharmacy, stepping on broken glass.
I quickly circled the counter with a flashlight, scanning the clean floor and all the intact walls.
I opened the curtains and held the window open so I could stab it right in.
It would not have been strange if a zombie or a survivor had popped out, but there was no one in the pharmacy.
After thoroughly checking the warehouse, I set up a window on one side and took off the backpack with the crossbow attached.
A smile came to my lips as I looked at the medicine cabinets that filled the walls of the pharmacy.
It appears that during the early stages of the zombie outbreak, all the hospitals that were housed in this tower were closed, and the pharmacy was also closed.
Unlike stores or convenience stores, pharmacies are often avoided by looters, but that is only until the snow melts.
If the survivors had started to actively engage in outdoor activities, this place would have been completely looted as well, but seeing the intact medicines made it worthwhile to come out ahead.

After scanning everything from top to bottom, I opened my backpack.
They swept up everything from antibiotics to pills, ointments, and injections.
I didn’t even bother looking at things like bandages, disinfectants, digestive aids, anti-diarrheal agents, and disposable syringes because I already had enough stockpiled.
Next, I took blood pressure medication, diabetes medication, and myocardial infarction medication.
Even in the apocalypse, there are many sick people, and these specialized medicines can be sold at very high prices if you find the right buyer.
There are three faces that come to mind when I think about who I should sell what to.
As expected from a pharmacy in a building housing seven hospitals, the variety and quantity of specialty medicines on offer were quite satisfactory.
My backpack was quickly filled with just the medicine on the shelf.
I placed the tightly packed backpack at the entrance, picked up Jongseok’s backpack, and put the remaining medicine in it.
After collecting everything of useable value and searching through the warehouse, Jong-seok ran into the pharmacy.
“Hey, there are people coming! Three guys and two girls.”
“Okay, it’s over.”
I quickly grabbed my backpack and handed it to Jongseok, then slung my backpack with the crossbow on it over my shoulder.
“Which side?”
“excuse me.”
Jongseok slung his backpack over one shoulder and pointed to the path we had walked.
“Let’s go back to the other side.”
There was no need to even look at the printed satellite map because I had already figured out the possible routes by melting snow with a drone before I left.
He ran north, holding a spear in one hand.
The hard, melted road under the high sun was perfect for running, and the weight of my backpack, filled with medicine and carrying a crossbow, was about the same as that of five or six textbooks.
After running about 200 meters, passing the buildings, I heard a noise behind me.
I slowed down and looked back, and just as Jong-seok had said, there were three men and two women.
They were all wearing parkas, scarves and carrying crude weapons. They pointed at us, said something, and then rushed into the pharmacy.
They seemed to be a group of incompetent survivors, as they didn’t even have anyone to pursue them or stand guard.
A moment later, two men ran out of the pharmacy and chased after us.
“Hey!
A chorus of curses and shouts erupted from behind.
The surroundings were so quiet that I thought the voice was so loud that it could be heard not only in this area but also perhaps ten kilometers away.
I frowned and shook my head at his careless actions of urging orders.
When chasing someone, you should keep your mouth shut, hide your movements as much as possible, and move stealthily.
Even if you yell, the person running away will not stop, and instead, they may realize that they are being chased and set a trap or fight back.
If you hear the noise and zombies or other marauders approach, things can get really messy and you’re very likely to end up dead or turned into a zombie.
Seeing those who can’t control their anger and run wild like that still alive makes me realize that the apocalypse is only just beginning.
As we reached the intersection, people appeared from the Top Plus Mart on the right.
The mart had long since been ransacked and looted, leaving it in chaos, but more than ten starving survivors had gathered there, holding on to a glimmer of hope.
People who were clearing the snow piled up in the parking lot with something like a shovel to make their way to the mart glared at me and Jong-seok running towards them with spears in their hands.
I passed the mart and turned left at the intersection.
There were quite a few shops and villas with their entrances exposed due to melted snow, but I just glanced over them while running to make sure there were no hazards.
People who are not used to this situation often run away to any place and hide due to the anxiety and pressure of being chased.
If you were injured or had too many zombies or hostile mobs around you to move, then that would be one thing, but hiding in this situation was foolish and put you in a corner.
They and I were more than 200 meters apart from the start, and it was getting further and further away, and I had figured out most of the alleys I could move through.
There are no zombies or looters on the streets where the snow has not yet melted.
It was only a matter of time before they could leisurely shake off their pursuers and return to their hideout.
Rather, if you get scared and hide here, they will start to stir around, making it more difficult to move.
Since returning, I have been exercising consistently and building up my stamina, so I was able to run without stopping without any difficulty.
Her breathing was still steady and her steps were light and powerful.
The condition was also excellent.
Looking back, Jongseok was following along without any sign of fatigue, perhaps due to the effects of my personal PT and hiking.
“are you okay?”
Jong-seok nodded silently with a nervous expression and gave a thumbs up.
I chuckled and looked behind me.
They had already spread out, and I couldn’t even see their noses, and the wet asphalt road was glistening in the sunlight.
Since there are no footprints left, you can shake off your pursuers by turning just one more corner.
As I turned left into the alley in front of the convenience store, a dark shape suddenly popping out from the piled up snow caught my eye.
I changed my plan on the spur of the moment.
As I suddenly stopped, Jong-seok also quickly slowed down, stepping on the wet asphalt road with the soles of his combat boots that had good grip.
“Why? What is it?”
Jong-seok’s eyes trembled as he pointed to the black hand that had burst through the snowdrift like a sign that hell had opened and closed.
“Let’s tear this down.”
As Jong-seok and I poked the snow pile with the window, the corpse fell down onto the road.
The corpse, which had been trapped in the snowdrift, was lying on the ground in a rigid posture like a stone statue.
He was desperately clutching at something with his frozen face, but there was nothing in his hands.
Judging from the black long padding he was wearing with the university name and logo written on it, he seemed to be a college student.
It was the first corpse I had seen since I started this life.
Whether I see a zombie or a corpse, I have the familiar feeling of “now it’s time to start again,” but Jong-seok’s breathing became ragged and the abyss in his eyes deepened.
It was an expression that seemed to shake the foundation of the self and the source of life to its roots.
Death is the inevitable future of all humans, so it’s perfectly normal to think a lot about it, but now was not the time to do so.
He reached out and grabbed Jongseok’s shoulder.
“Are you okay?”
“······Oh. Right······ It’s completely different from what you see on TV. Is this a zombie?”
“I don’t know. I’ll have to try it to find out.”
It was impossible to distinguish between a dormant zombie and a corpse.
It’s natural, since zombies are walking corpses.
Still, precautions must be taken.
“What are you doing?”
Jongseok shivered slightly as he watched me approach him, holding the spear with both hands.
Without answering, I put my weight on the spear and stabbed deeply into the back of the corpse’s head.
Phew!
The blade that entered the skull shattering, breaking the chains of the curse that could not rest even in death, left the deceased with eternal rest and slipped out like a soul.
Without even a moment to pray for the soul, he wiped the bloody blade on the corpse’s clothes and hurriedly turned around.
“let’s go.”
He left the body in the middle of the street as if it were nothing and hid the body in a shady alley far away.
“Get your shotgun ready. With birdshot.”
Jongseok took off his backpack without saying a word and took out a shotgun from the case.
Since it was loaded with 6 birdshot rounds, I just checked the chamber and took up position right away.
I also put down my backpack, loaded my crossbow, and took out my binoculars.
About five minutes later, men appeared, panting, from the direction of the mart at the intersection.
They must have heard our whereabouts from the people gathered at the mart, because they ran towards us without hesitation.
The distance between them and us was about 500 meters, and in the middle of that distance lay a corpse as a psychological obstacle.
I pulled the hood of my snow-white winter coat over my head and laid my crossbow down next to the snow-covered truck.
I lay in the shade and held the binoculars to my eyes to avoid the sunlight reflecting off the lenses.
As I adjusted the magnification, the men’s faces and expressions became clearer.
The men who discovered the body stopped in shock.
