Episode 64: Zombie with Sapphire Eyes (2)
It was May, and the sky was ripening into a dreamy blue.
The sunlight warmly enveloped my face, and the gentle breeze coming down from the mountain was full of fresh, green moisture.
I lay down on a mat on the rooftop and sipped a cola from the morning.
As I enjoyed a brief moment of peace and leisure, it felt like I was back to my old daily life, rather than a lawless place with starving corpses walking around.
It was possible because I had a safe hideout and reliable companions.
Even if I had a lot of supplies, I wouldn’t have been able to be this relaxed if I had been locked in a building alone, embracing the silence and loneliness.
He put down the cup that had only ice left and covered his face with his hat.
As I was slowly falling into a deep sleep, the sound of the walkie-talkie tickled my ears like an alarm.
– Are you sleeping? Come down.
I ignored it because there was no sign of urgency in his voice, but eventually I had no choice but to open my eyes.
– You know that wooden sword boy? The zombie master. I think he’s looking for you.
He took his hat off his face and sighed.
*
The boy who had protected his younger siblings with a wooden sword was loitering in front of the destroyed convenience store.
This is where I followed the golden carriage and received unexpected help.
It was clear that he was looking for someone as he anxiously looked around the alleys.
It seemed like it was probably waiting for me.
“Did you tell me to come over there if I needed help?”
“no.”
There was no need to look back on the memories.
The boy didn’t even ask me for help.
Did he instinctively know that begging and clinging wouldn’t work?
He was quite the man, as evidenced by the fact that he turned eight adults who abused him and his younger siblings into zombies.
I don’t know what happened, but I don’t think he came here to beg.
The boy lowered the drone so he could hear the sound of the propellers.
The boy threw his head back in surprise, blinked with a surprised face, then took something out of his pocket and unfolded it.
‘The looters are coming this way!’
The letters written clearly on the white cloth looked very honest, but it was difficult to believe them at face value.
Whether children or adults, people in a corner will do anything to survive.
Lying was easy when the world was all right, but that boy wasn’t that sloppy.
“Watch with a drone.”
“Should I go?”
“uh.”
He took up a revolver, slung a crossbow, and carried a spear.
“He’s a guy worth meeting.”
“Of course. You’re the Zombie Master.”
“Is there no one around?”
“It’s clean. The remaining zombies went to E-Mart to watch the fireworks, and there are no survivors to be seen.”
As we approached the convenience store, bypassing the empty alleys, the boy lowered his head with a nervous expression.
The wooden sword hanging on his waist caught my eye.
“Did you find the wooden sword?”
“Yes, thanks to you, sir.”
A smile spread across the boy’s thin, haggard face.
It was the first time I saw him smile, and even though he wasn’t in good health, his expression was natural as if he had some peace of mind.
“The looters are coming?”
“yes.”
I went into the convenience store and spread out a map on the table.
The boy was still not very good at reading maps, so he looked at it for a while, asking about the terrain and place names, and then carefully marked a spot with his finger.
It was around Geumsa Station, south of Buwulsan Mountain.
“Did you see it yourself?”
The boy straightened his back, looked straight into my eyes, and nodded.
“Two nights ago, I went down a long way south to get something to eat and saw a building burning in the distance.”
Fires often occur in cities beyond human control.
Before the power outage, it was due to overheating or leakage, and after that, it was due to lightning striking a bad spot.
What the boy witnessed was not a natural fire, but deliberate arson.
“······They set fire to it and arrested people.”
People were said to have been beaten and dragged into the darkness by armed looters who had bound their hands and feet as they emerged from the building engulfed in flames and black smoke.
It was too far away and dark to see clearly, but there were at least 15 looters.
In situations where there was nothing to eat, the only cases of people being taken away were to secure labor for shelters that were somewhat self-sufficient and to use them as sexual slaves.
The worst is hunting them for food.
Looking at the map, the fire scene was about 4km away in a straight line, but it was completely obscured by Mt. Owl.
The flames and screams probably didn’t reach the mountain, as they wouldn’t be visible at all from here.
It was beyond the maximum flight range and difficult to fly the drone because of the mountains.
I had no choice but to go nearby and check.
There is no guarantee that they will turn around Owl Mountain and come up north.
You can also turn south and head towards Seomyeon.
Even if you make it all the way to Jangjeon Station, what are the chances of finding the hideout hidden at the foot of the mountain?
It may seem unlikely, but we need to find out what kind of guys they are.
“What was your name?”
“This is Kim Seong-hun.”
“I am Yoon Kang-jun.”
When I asked for his name and told him, the boy’s expression brightened as he felt acknowledged.
“excuse me······”
As the mood softened, the boy hesitated and brought up the main topic.
“If the information I brought you is helpful, please take care of my little brother.”
“Why your little brother?”
“I’m sick. I have had a stomachache and diarrhea for the past three days.”
Kim Seong-hun bit his lips and lowered his head.
Then that’s it.
He is not the type of guy who would run around in fear because of a looter who hasn’t even arrived yet.
It didn’t seem like he was lying to save his brother, but thanks to this guy, I was able to take out eight annoying raiders without even raising a hand.
I thought it would be okay to be fooled once in a while.
“Okay, let’s do that. Just wait a minute.”
When I returned to the hideout and flew the drone, as expected, Geumsa Station was not visible because of the mountain.
It was the same even when raised to maximum altitude.
I explained the situation to Jongseok and packed the necessary supplies in my backpack.
Yeonhee heard the news and came running.
“The kid who turned human trash into zombies is here?”
When I told him that we were going out on a reconnaissance together, Jong-seok said he would go instead and quickly packed his equipment.
I sent Lee Seon-ae to the hiding place and went down with Yeon-hee to join the boy.
“It’s been a while, do you remember me?”

When Yeonhee waved happily out of curiosity at meeting someone from the same class, Kim Seonghun awkwardly lowered his head with a bewildered expression.
“Oh, yes. Hello.”
As I was going down to Jangjeon Station and crossing the bridge, a foul smell wafting from the riverside under the subway piers stung my nose.
Flies and rats were swarming around in the rotting garbage that had flowed in through the river.
“That thing?”
Yeonhee looked at the nine zombies guarding the entrance to the first floor of the building with sparkling eyes.
“······yes.”
Kim Sung-hoon moved slightly away from Yeon-hee and picked up a small stone that had been collected nearby.
I threw rocks at the empty cans placed on the barricade, making a noise and the zombies slowly gathered in that direction.
“song.”
As the path opened, Kim Seong-hun took the lead, smothering his footsteps, overcoming obstacles and opening the door on the first floor.
As we climbed the stairs to the fifth floor, two children much smaller than the boy greeted us with blank expressions.
“Greetings. I’m the man who helped us before.”
“thank you.”
When Kim Seong-hun greeted them, the two little boys bowed their heads weakly.
They were both pitifully thin and dirty.
When I saw the little girl lying down with a stomachache, my remaining human emotions began to clench in a complicated way.
Yeonhee’s face looked like she was about to cry.
“What······ do you eat to live?”
As Yeonhee asked with difficulty, a child guided her to a bag of flour.
When Yeonhee lifted the pole, cockroaches scattered in all directions.
The only food left was half a sack of flour.
The flower pots that covered the rooftop were sprouting green potato leaves, but it was still a long way to go before they were ready to be harvested.
I think they were trying to conserve flour and hold out until the potatoes came out.
“I’ll start by boiling the porridge.”
“okay.”
While Yeonhee took out a burner, water, and rice from her backpack and made porridge, I opened a can of yellow peaches and fed the girl with a stomachache some of the sweet water.
I gave a bowl of zodiac signs to the two children who were staring intently, swallowing dry saliva.
“Are you sick?”
Kim Seong-hun looked down at his younger sister with a frightened face and asked.
“I don’t know. Are the other kids okay?”
“Everyone has a little stomachache. And they have diarrhea too.”
“Where do you get water?”
“In the river.”
For a moment I was speechless.
“Just there? In that place where the rats are running around?”
Yeonhee stopped stirring the pot with a spoon and turned around with a frown.
Kim Sung-hoon hung his head like a child caught doing something bad.
“······Yes. That’s the only place to get water······”
“Please give me some water.”
Kim Seong-hun came with a transparent plastic bottle, keeping an eye on things.
At first glance it looked clear and clean, but when I opened the stopper and held it up to my nose, I could smell a faint odor.
I took out a portable water purifier and a box of water purification tablets from my backpack.
I poured water from a plastic bottle into a portable water purifier, purified it first, and then put in a water purification tablet.
“See? From now on, if you purify your water like this and drink it, you won’t get sick. One pill for every two-liter bottle of water.”
“······Yes. I’ll keep that in mind.”
Kim Seong-hun nodded, wiping his wet eyes with his hand.
It may not seem like much, but just one of these water purification tablets can make polluted water drinkable.
The distance to the house’s groundwater distribution was too far.
If you come and go often, you never know where or who might catch you.
A portable water purifier, water purification tablets, a can of yellow peaches, and warm porridge.
The price paid for the information Kim Seong-hun brought was more than enough.
Adding the lives of eight potential looters and the realization that I was still human, the math was pretty much it.
Kim Seong-hun and his two younger brothers devoured the fragrant, warm porridge as if possessed.
Yeonhee blew on the food and fed it to the little girl who couldn’t get up.
After the meal, the children were given children’s antibiotics and anti-diarrheal medication.
“You eat it too.”
“Me? I’m fine.”
“Eat it.”
We also gave medicine to Kim Seong-hun and prepared to go out on a reconnaissance mission.
Yeonhee decided to take care of the kids while Kim Sunghoon was away.
I went down to the first floor, threw rocks at the zombies, jumped over the obstacles, and entered the alley.
*
As we walked south for about an hour, keeping an eye on our surroundings, the Owl Mountain that had been spread out far to our left disappeared and the view to the east opened up.
There were many tall buildings, so Geumsa Station was not visible.
Even if you try to go up to the rooftop, you can’t enter the building hastily because it’s safe to assume there are zombies inside.
I looked around and headed towards a two-story supermarket.
I climbed up to the rooftop via the outside stairs, hid behind the water tank, and took out the small drone.
“Wow, there are drones this small?”
It is a palm-sized drone, so it is weak to the wind and has a short flight range, but it is not noticeable, so it is good for secret use.
It was perfect for reconnaissance because it also had a camera.
“You have to be on guard while I fly the drone. If you hear anyone coming or any noise, tap me on the shoulder immediately.”
“yes.”
Kim Seong-hun nodded with a trustworthy face, raised his spear, and looked toward the stairs.
After looking around, I put on the VR goggles and picked up the controller.
Wheeing.
A small drone soared into the sky with a low whirring sound.
Inside my goggles, my vision also followed the drone, leaving the rooftop and heading east.
The drone flew far away, past buildings with broken windows and fallen signs, and streets filled with abandoned cars.
After passing the large apartment complex that blocked the way like a wall, a station with a sign saying ‘Geumsa Station’ appeared.
Across from the warehouse in front of the history building, traces of the arson that Kim Seong-hun had mentioned were clearly visible.
The burnt-out building was a five-story one-room apartment.
The fire did not appear to spread because it was separated from other buildings by a road.
There was no one around.
There were only a few zombies wandering around aimlessly.
As I pulled the zoom, one of the zombies turned around.
It was clearly a coincidence.
But the zombie stood still facing this way and didn’t move.
As if looking at it.
Because it was a small drone, the zoom of the camera mounted on it was not very good, so the zombie’s face could not be seen.
Beep
Ignoring the warning sounds of losing control range, I approached the zombie with the drone.
