Episode 65: Zombie with Sapphire Eyes (3)
Beep beep
The small drone lost power and fell down after leaving the control range with a final warning sound.
I took off the VR goggles and quickly put the binoculars up to my eyes.
The small drone crashed on the sidewalk next to an abandoned car.
The zombie, unable to confirm its face, turned around and walked down the alley.
Seeing other zombies enter as well, it seemed like there was some movement that would attract attention.
I got up from my seat, remembering the gray Nike padding the zombie was wearing.
“Let’s go down.”
I walked down and looked at the road, which was a mess with abandoned cars at the entrance to the alley.
At first glance, it may seem safe because there is no one there, but there will be zombies hiding everywhere like booby traps.
It was best to move forward quickly, using the vehicles on the road as cover.
I turned my head and looked down at Kim Seong-hun, who was clutching the window with a stern face.
“Have you ever killed a zombie?”
Although his courage and guts in luring the zombies in and taking out eight adults are commendable, he was still a middle school student who had not yet fully matured.
He was much smaller than me in height and build, and his physical strength was poor due to malnutrition.
A crude spear made by inserting an awl into a stick is pretty good, but if you meet an adult zombie bigger than you, you will have to stab it from below, so it won’t be easy to stick it in the head.
“Yes. Two. I stabbed them in the head from behind.”
It didn’t seem like a lie.
“We’ll go along the road, retrieve the drone, and approach there. You never know where a zombie might pop out between the cars. You have to protect yourself. You’ve done your job, so if you’re not confident, you can turn back here.”
Even if you actually had actual combat experience of taking down two of them, it would be difficult to expect fighting prowess on the level of Jong-seok or Yeon-hee.
Even if you force it, it will only become a burden.
“I’ll go with you. I can do it.”
Kim Sung-hoon’s gaze, staring at me desperately as if trying to prove that he was useful, was so desperate that it was hard to turn away.
“If it doesn’t work out, run away without looking back. I’ll somehow get there alive.”
“yes.”
Although it would have been natural for Kim Seong-hun to hesitate for a moment, even out of courtesy, he nodded resolutely.
It felt a little strange because he seemed like he would really abandon her and run away, but this young boy has three families to protect.
I left the alley and entered the road, thinking about the fate of the boy who couldn’t die easily even if he wanted to.
“Watch your step. The fallen zombies might grab your feet or bite your ankles.”
Because of such danger, he always wears US military combat boots that come up to his ankles, but Kim Seong-hoon’s shoes were thin running shoes.
“yes.”
Kim Seong-hun followed closely behind me, carefully examining the floor.
With no one to take care of the remains, stinking corpses were strewn about inside and outside the car, just as they had been for the last time.
We quickly advanced, seeing with our own eyes the corpses that had rotted to the point where their bones were exposed.
I was wearing long-sleeved clothes with anti-scabies properties and gloves, so as long as I didn’t get bitten on my face or neck, I wouldn’t have gotten infected.
Phew!
I stabbed the head of a zombie that was rising from the truck bed with a spear and knocked it down, then looked inside.
A similar sound was heard from behind.
When I looked back, I saw Kim Seong-hun pulling the spear out of the head of a zombie that was crushed by a wheel.
He looked at me with eyes that seemed to expect my approval, as if asking if it was okay, so I nodded silently.
A small drone was recovered after it fell on a sidewalk outside an apartment complex.
The propeller was fine, but the circuit was broken and the power wouldn’t turn on.
At the intersection where Geumsa Station was visible, I passed a burnt-out building and headed towards the alley where zombies had entered.
There were no zombies in sight, but fortunately the alley was a single-lane road.
He held the window, muffled his footsteps, and slowly dug into the thick silence that had gathered between the two walls.
Thinking that there were zombies out there somewhere made me feel quite eerie, like I was walking into an animal’s esophagus.
As we turned the corner, we sensed the expected eerie presence beyond the fence on the right.
I motioned for Kim Seong-hun to go the other way and looked inside through the gap in the fallen iron door.
A warehouse with only a roof made of prefabricated panels was filled with zombies.
There were at least 100 zombies swarming around like worms in a basket.
It seemed like the zombies had entered the alley earlier because of the noise made by the crowd.
When I pointed to the alley as if to tell him to watch, Kim Seong-hun nodded and took a few steps back.
I took out my binoculars and scanned the zombies.
It wasn’t hard to find a zombie wearing a gray Nike padding.
He was staring blankly at the sky, mixed in with the crowd, and his face was so rotten that his teeth and nose were exposed, similar to other zombies.
The two eyes that seemed to be looking at the drone were also a cloudy gray.
I took the binoculars off my eyes in disappointment at having wasted my time.
Was it a coincidence?
It has often been the case in the past that zombies with exceptionally good hearing would react sensitively to sounds heard from far away.
In the case of the mutants, they displayed strange behavior to the point that it was questionable whether they still had some consciousness or intelligence.
It was like standing in front of a broken traffic light or tapping on a supermarket checkout counter with a barcode machine.
In the end, it was just a walking corpse that ate people.
That guy would be the same.
I let out a quiet sigh as my interest completely disappeared, but suddenly the zombie’s eyes flashed.
uh?
When I put the binoculars back to my eyes, the zombie’s eyes turned blue in the sunlight shining through the clouds.
As I watched the soft blue gradually deepen and harden like a mineral, I remembered what the guy in a suit who flew the drone at E-Mart said.
A zombie with sapphire eyes.
I was so shocked by the strange sight I had never seen before that I just blinked my eyes and then adjusted my binoculars.
I watched it for a while, suppressing my excitement and anticipation, but the zombies all looked and acted the same, except for their eye colors.
It didn’t seem like it had any particular intelligence.
What should I do with that?
It was too risky to sell out to those who had offered the deal.
More than likely, instead of a truckload of supplies, the bodyguards’ silenced machine guns would be firing.
I remembered Jong-seok’s absurd hypothesis full of holes.
Did I really get bitten by such a rare mutant and fall into the curse of regression?
Even if that’s the case, what use would it be to take it?
No matter how much I hated regression, I didn’t want to do something crazy like get bitten by a zombie just to try it out.
Still, it’s better to catch it.
This has never happened in the past ten years I’ve spent in the Apocalypse.
It’s not too late to decide where to use it.

If that doesn’t work, just kill them like other zombies.
I’m determined to secure it, but there are over 100 zombies gathered there.
It wasn’t easy even with Jong-seok and Yeon-hee, so it was impossible with just one middle school student.
Rather than ruining the job by force, it was more likely to succeed if they retreated quietly and planned a capture operation.
“let’s go.”
I left my regret behind and retreated, my footsteps quiet.
Wong wong!
As I was almost out of the alley, a loud dog barking could be heard from beyond the building ahead.
The screeching sound of tires scraping the ground and the roar of an angry engine followed.
He frowned and leaned against the wall at the corner of the alley, looking outside.
A familiar car appeared far across the road.
Five or six people were clinging to a mobile refueling truck made of sharp rebar welded into a hedgehog shape.
Dogs barked from the back of the truck.
There were at least 20 men hanging from the home lorry and riding in the truck.
All were armed with spears and swords, and crossbows were also visible.
“Are they those guys?”
Just in case, I called Kim Seong-hun over and asked him while pointing to the truck.
When asked if they were the ones who set fire to buildings and kidnapped people, Kim Seong-hun shook his head with a sheepish look on his face.
“I don’t know.”
It was natural that I didn’t recognize it since I saw it from afar in the dark of the night.
Wong wong wong!
Wong wong!
The large pit bulls raised their front paws so high that their leashes were taut and they were barking furiously.
All three of them were looking straight in this direction, as if they had definitely smelled something.
It seemed like a dog stopped barking as it was passing by after eating somewhere, and when the person who seemed to be the leader pointed to an alley, the man in the cargo hold let go of the leash.
Wong wong wong!
The freed pit bulls showed off their ferocious nature by jumping out of the cargo area and running across the road.
I saw him coming straight towards me, rolled down my window, and took my shotgun out of its soft case.
Kim Seong-hun’s eyes became intent as the gun appeared.
“저 개새끼들 해치우고 골목 안으로 도망칠 거야. 몸 좀 풀어. 어깨 펴고 심호흡도 하고. 중간에 쓰러지면 끝장이야.”
When I tapped his shoulder and offered him some advice to relax his tense expression, Kim Sung-hoon did as I said, got up, stretched his legs, and took a deep breath.
At least 20 looters in front, and over 100 zombies behind.
There were too many looters and zombies to be destroyed with just one shotgun.
If I had brought a K2 rifle, I could have gotten through, but it would have been a huge waste of bullets.
Even though we were being attacked from the front and back, there was a way to survive.
A muscular pit bull came into the alley, his teeth flashing.
His eyes were bloodshot, as if he was used to tasting blood, and saliva dripped from between his sharp teeth.
I threw the spear at the exact moment when he was rushing in with the intent to kill me.
Wake up!
As the pit bull with its torso impaled on the wall slammed into the wall, the other two came into view.
He picked up the shotgun loaded with birdshot and pulled the trigger without hesitation.
Bang! Bang!
Wake up!
Pit bulls flew away, spraying blood as they were swept by the shotgun.
As the gunshot rang out, the alley and the back simultaneously became busy.
“Wake up and follow me!”
I turned around and ran to the yard where the zombies were waiting.
Kim Seong-hun gritted his teeth and followed closely behind me.
As we entered the storage yard, we heard gunshots and zombies came out, spreading their arms to greet us.
Fortunately, the space was wide enough to avoid the hand of death.
I waited until the zombies were right in front of me, then quickly ran to the left.
The zombies suddenly changed direction and fell down, tangled together.
Still, dozens of them chased us with a slow pace.
Zombies have the reaction speed and movements of a sloth, so if you don’t catch them, you can escape unharmed.
If you were overwhelmed by their vicious appearance and the number of 100, you would freeze and that would be the end.
Looking back, Kim Seong-hun was following along quite well and calmly.
I thought the looters wouldn’t be able to enter easily because of the gunshots, but suddenly a spear flew in from behind.
The zombie that was following me was hit and fell instead.
As I walked around the wall and looked toward the entrance, I saw several big-hearted looters sneaking into the alley, eyeing me with their spears.
But there were so many zombies that I couldn’t even swing the spear properly.
After keeping the zombies at a distance and reaching the opposite wall, coincidentally a sapphire zombie was blocking my way.
I sighed in confusion at having to leave this behind, but then I noticed a small warehouse in the back.
I took a towel out of my backpack pocket and covered the zombie’s mouth.
When I grabbed the zombie by the collar, it staggered but did not fall and was dragged along.
good.
“Let’s open this!”
I ran over in one breath, opened the warehouse door, and pushed the sapphire zombie in.
After closing and locking the door, I ran to the fence.
“You go first.”
He put both hands together to make a pedestal and lifted Kim Seong-hun up onto the wall.
After throwing the window, shotgun, and backpack over the fence, I jumped up with all my might.
We were a bit late, but the zombies were still ten steps away.
I pulled at the wall with both arms.
I hung my lower body on the top of the wall, turned my body, put one leg over it, and climbed over the wall.
The looters were just watching from outside the entrance, not daring to come in because of the number of zombies.
There’s nothing to be gained by killing all the zombies here, so they might not want to go overboard.
Whatever it was, the sapphire zombie I had stored in the warehouse was mine.
When I saw the zombies coming close, I grabbed the wall with my hand and fell outside.
Kim Seong-hun, who went over first, handed over the shotgun.
I quickly put on my backpack and picked up the shotgun.
The window I had was taken by Kim Seong-hun.
I ran west, around the alley along the wall.
