Chupacabra

The cartel leader, known as the Chupacabra, began crossing the road with one hand raised.

After a while, I noticed that he was waving his hand to his subordinates rather than to us.

It seemed like a signal telling us not to shoot.

Our guns were pointed downwards, but we watched him, ready to fire at them at any moment.

There is a tense atmosphere in the area where it feels like everyone is going to start shooting at each other if someone sneezes loudly.

Finally, the Chupacabra crossed the road and approached us, gathered at the front entrance of the warehouse.

He was a normal-looking middle-aged Hispanic man, and Johansson whispered to him from next to him.

“Guerrero earned the nickname Chupacabra because he would kill rival cartel sicarios alive, draining all the blood from their bodies as soon as he captured them. When all that was left were their husks, he would throw them onto the streets of the rival cartel’s neighborhood.”

I immediately agreed with those words.

“I’m worried that we might end up in that situation too.”

“Don’t worry, Kim. Slowly killing someone by draining their blood is a thing of the past. These days, they just cut off their head.”

I was talking nonsense, and ended up hearing things I didn’t need to know.

While we were watching Guerrero, Team Leader Dawson also informed the men inside the warehouse of the situation.

I gave the final additional instructions shortly after Dawson had relayed the message to the other agents that if anything happened, it looked like a shootout was likely, and that they should take action if anything happened.

“All call signs! No matter what happens, you must not hand Lopez and Pedro over to them! If the worst comes to the worst, I want you to put a bullet in their heads!”

Amy, who heard me through the headset, looked at me with an expression of astonishment.

So what?

I never want to go through what I’ve been through because of those children of Satan again.

Whether it’s ‘assault by a poisonous person’ or ‘murder by a poisonous person’, I don’t care a thing now.

Guerrero approaches us and speaks, briefly raising both hands in front of us.

And in perfect English too.

“I apologize if I startled you, agents. I am Paulo Guerrero.”

We stared at him without responding.

Then, he spoke again with an awkward smile.

“You seem to be federal agents. May I ask who the on-site agent is?”

I answered him as I took a step forward.

“Signor Guerrero! This is a federal agent crime scene. I want you to leave this place immediately with your armed men. If you continue to stay here, I will consider you obstructing the execution of a federal warrant.”

At those words, Chupacabra again raises both hands slightly and says.

“Don’t worry, Agent. I’m not here to harm you.”

“So then, what exactly do you want?”

Chupacabra doesn’t answer my question, but suddenly squats down on the ground and spreads out both arms.

what are you doing?

Just then, a girl jumped out from behind me and went into the arms of the Chupacabra.

At that moment, we all could figure out what was going on.

Preston appears from behind and speaks to us.

“As soon as he heard the voice, the child suddenly ran out, shouting that the man was his father…”

The cartel leader barely holds back his tears as he talks to the child.

The child seemed to be telling the Chupacabra the story that had happened so far, but every so often he would turn his head and point at us with his finger.

We were telling the story of how we saved ourselves.

After they finished talking, Chupacabra stood up holding the child, and the surrounding subordinates approached him.

Five men carrying MP5 submachine guns and mini-Uzi submachine guns surrounded the Chupacabra.

The girl waved goodbye to even the rough-looking gang members, and they waved goodbye to her in return.

Ironically, this is the moment when you personally confirm that the ruthless cartel guys who casually bang people’s balls are actually people who smile like fathers and uncles to their children.

The Chupacabra looks at me and says:

“Words of gratitude alone will never repay this favor, Agents. Still… I truly appreciate it.”

At those words, I glanced at Decker, Amy, and Preston standing on my left and right, then answered Chupacabra.

“We just did what we had to do, Signor Guerrero.”

At that moment, Chupacabra pointed at Mr. Johansson, who was standing behind me, and said:

“Hey, Gringo! Remember the last time I warned you that if you ever set foot in Juarez again, you’d never return to the United States alive?”

Johansson nodded at that.

Then Chupacabra laughs and says:

“Let’s just pretend that never happened. If you come into our neighborhood looking for missing children again, contact me right away. Then, I will support our children.”

After Mr. Johansson raises his hand to the Chupacabra as if he understands, he belatedly gives us an explanation.

“Chupacabra is the only one of the Juarez cartels that has kept its distance from human trafficking. While it may be okay selling drugs or killing people, it has completely avoided kidnapping and selling children. In fact, Lopez and Pedro’s local errand boys were caught by Chupacabra’s men and beheaded while alive when they tried to smuggle kidnapped children through Juarez. It seems that Osmond, Lopez, and Pedro kidnapped the author’s daughter because of the Chupacabra’s interference.”

After we understood the situation, we nodded our heads toward the Chupacabra and said hello.

Then the girl whispered to Chupacabra again and waved at me.

I wave my hand to say hello, and the Chupacabra speaks to me.

“When the child was in danger, you protected him by wrapping your whole body around him… I want to know your name.”

At that moment, a chilling memory came to mind, of the fight between Guillermo Vega and the Colombian cartel.

So, I hesitate to reveal my identity to these guys, but Chupacabra senses my mood and speaks again.

“You who saved my only daughter are now like my brother. The person who saved my daughter’s life is the person who saved my life.”

After saying that, the Chupacabra and the little boy smiled at me.

Anyway, it wouldn’t be a problem for someone within the federal agency to find out my identity, so I just revealed my identity right away.

“This is Chris Kim.”

Then, Chupacabra greets me formally.

“Kim! I’m Paulo Guerrero. My friends call me Paulo.”

I nodded to him and replied.

“Paulo!”

Even the Chupacabra nods to me and says:

“You can think of me as your brother, Kim. If you have any trouble, come to me in Juarez. Then, no matter what, I will take care of you.”

After having the backing of the U.S. Treasury Secretary and the FBI Chicago Branch Chief, it seems he now has the backing of the head of the most dangerous Mexican border cartel.

If I live a good life like I do now, I think I’ll eventually be able to get everyone on my side except Donald Trump.

After handing over Lopez and Pedro to the FBI and Homeland Security agents, we prepared to leave for Chicago.

We were packing up our bags and gear at the motel that Johansson had found for us when Sanders and the biker guys came looking for us.

Johansson, David Cole, Terry Eisenberg and Paul York all appeared in biker gang garb.

“It’s been really great being able to save the kids together, Agent Kim.”

Jack and the Beanstalk Number One, Johansson shakes my hand.

I nodded and took his hand.

He then shook hands with Cole, Eisenberg, and York, and Team Leader Decker, Team Leader Dawson, and Amy also greeted them.

A moment later, Sanders, who had been watching us, approaches me and extends his hand.

As I take his hand, he speaks.

“I apologize for being rude to you when we first met here, Agent Kim. Back in the day, my daughter was kidnapped and taken to Mexico, and the FBI and DEA did something stupid and put her in danger. So I asked Al (Johansson) and his friends to take care of things outside the law. But now that I see you and your team… I think it’s time for me to change my mind.”

As I listened to Sanders, I found myself nodding along.

He nods to greet the other team members and hands me a business card.

“We hope that someday we can help you too.”

It was a business card with a satellite cell phone number printed on it, without a name, office address, or email address.

I turned my gaze from the business card to the Jack and the Beanstalk men standing in front of us.

It felt like I was feeling the aura of tough angels struggling to keep this world from collapsing, rather than the rough and tumble aura I had felt when I first encountered them.

“Well, we’ll meet in the next life, Pops! Thanks to you, I’ve had enough of spinning in this life.”

Johansson smiled at my words and suddenly took off the leather jacket he was wearing.

Then he hands it to me and says:

“Kim, even though your physique doesn’t fit in with our group, if you ever get tired of the IRS job and want to break away, come see us in that jacket. We’ll pick out the bike for you.”

I nodded to him as I took the leather jacket with the soaring eagle printed on the back and chest.

But, just as we were finishing our friendly farewells, someone suddenly knocked urgently on the door of our motel room.

Everyone is startled and reaches for the gun holster on their waist.

As I draw my Glock 23 and approach the door under the protection of Team Leader Decker, I hear Team Leader Hancock’s voice.

“Hey, open the door quickly!”

While we were rescuing children and taking down human trafficking rings, Team Leader Hancock is now back to coordinating all operations with the FBI and IRS Wisconsin Field.

But as soon as we open the door, he runs inside and delivers the news loudly, hitting us in the back of the head.

That too, very harshly.

“The FBI vehicle transporting Lopez and Pedro was ambushed by unknown assailants.”

“Yes? When?”

As I ask Team Leader Hancock, people start pulling out guns, magazines, and bulletproof plate carriers from their luggage.

Then, Team Leader Hancock gestures with his hand as if to tell them to stop.

“Now that the situation is over, it’s time to leave it up to the FBI and Homeland Security to find those two bastards.”

“What happened to Lopez and Pedro? Did their men rescue them?”

Amy walked up to the team leader and asked.

Hancock answers, grabbing a bottle of water from the bedside table.

“According to the FBI agents who were attacked, they definitely weren’t Lopez and Pedro’s subordinates. When we checked the CCTV footage from the surrounding streets, we saw the assailants beating Lopez and Pedro and forcing them into their vehicle. The two men resisted fiercely as if they would never come out alive once they got into the assailants’ vehicle, and after being shot in the head with the assailants’ guns, they were put into the vehicle unconscious.”

Team Leader Hancock said that and then held up his smartphone to us.

A captured image of the CCTV footage was floating on the phone screen, and the moment we saw it, our mouths dropped open in shock.

“Hey, aren’t those guys Chupacabra’s subordinates? The ones that came rushing in front of the warehouse?”

The dozen or so thugs in the captured photos all had their mouths covered with mufflers and masks, but judging by the guns and vehicles they were carrying, they clearly looked like subordinates of the Chupacabra we had encountered.

Soon, Johansson takes out a flask of whiskey and speaks indifferently.

“It seems that the Chupacabra, unable to do anything while we were holding them after rescuing his daughter, waited until they left our hands before kidnapping them.”

At those words, Jack and the Beanstalk all burst into laughter.

I asked right away because I felt like I knew what was going to happen to Lopez and Pedro in the future.

“Why did Chupacabra take Lopez and Pedro?”

Johansson took a sip of his whiskey and answered immediately.

“Of course he’ll get revenge for kidnapping his daughter. David Osmond can’t do anything about it since Kim blew his head off, but Lopez and Pedro will probably meet their end the Chupacabra way, either by bleeding them alive or beheading them, or both. Those terrifying Mexican cartel guys will be doing humanity a service.”

Johansson said that and smiled as if he found it very funny.

And my teammates and I looked at Mr. Johansson with expressions full of surprise and at the same time, amazement.
