Prison Riot

We left Big Rock as soon as we confirmed that Nick Gomez was being held in solitary confinement in the nearest cell, Prison Block Bravo.

As soon as we left the prison grounds, the massive steel doors that looked like something straight out of The Lord of the Rings were firmly shut, and they looked ominous.

The guards didn’t show it, but you could tell the mood just by looking at them moving hurriedly inside and outside the prison cells.

After passing through the main gates of Big Rock, we drove the BearCat northeast of the prison to get on the highway leading to Chicago.

Behind us are the Suburban and Bearcat, ridden by Amy and Silver Team.

After the sun went down, while driving on a two-lane road that seemed like no man’s land, our Gold Team members, except Team Leader Decker, were talking about football.

I kept my mouth shut and focused on driving, but inside I was feeling a bit uneasy about coming out of Big Rock like that and was wondering what to do.

“Kim, what are you thinking?”

Mr. Decker, who knows what I’m thinking just by looking at my expression, approaches me and talks to me.

I replied, keeping my eyes fixed on the road.

“I’m still worried about the Big Rock situation, Chief. After we left, I was worried that something big might have happened there. I also wonder if we should have brought Gomez instead of leaving him there.”

Decker nods silently to my words.

Just in case, I picked up the walkie-talkie hand microphone and asked Amy, who was following behind me.

“Amy!”

“why”

“Shouldn’t we have brought Gomez out? Something happened inside the prison, and we don’t want Gomez to get involved.”

At that, Team Leader Dawson, who was following Amy’s server, joined the conversation in the Bearcat.

“You’re saying that because you were afraid there might be a riot at Big Rock Prison, Kim?”

“Yes, I’m still worried, Jim (Team Leader Dawson)!”

At those words, Dawson suddenly asks loudly.

“Hey, Joe (Preston)! Are you listening?”

At that sound, Preston, who had been sitting quietly in the back seat, approaches behind the driver’s seat.

I hand him the hand mic and he answers to Team Leader Dawson.

“what’s the matter?”

“Do you remember the riot that occurred in a prison camp in Helmand province (southern Afghanistan) in 2013?”

At those words, Team Leader Decker and I turned our gazes toward the radio hand microphone that Preston was holding.

Preston answered Dawson, looking at me through the rear view mirror.

“You mean that damn Taliban, Al Qaeda thing, 400 of them, took over the entire prison camp and drove out all the Afghan government troops?”

At that, Team Leader Dawson unravels the story over the radio so that everyone can hear, and everyone listens to his voice.

“Do you remember when the Taliban and al-Qaeda high-ranking and mid-level officials dug tunnels to try to escape, and hundreds of prisoners rushed at the guards and government guards, even stealing weapons, and there was chaos?”

At that Preston pressed a key and said the following:

“How could I not remember that time? At that time, we (Dev Guru) and the SAS (British Special Operations Force) guys were shooting at the rooftop of the prison to block their escape route, and the multinational force and Afghan government forces, which were supposed to arrive at the scene in half a day, arrived the next afternoon. How could I forget that hellish day when 30 of us fought a gunfight for two days and nights?”

When I glance at Preston in the rear view mirror, he stares off into space, as if recalling the incident.

Soon, Team Leader Dawson continues his explanation.

“Damn, we and the SAS guys must have used 6,000 rounds of rifle and machine gun bullets on the rooftop in two days. Later, three 5-ton trucks were mobilized to carry away the enemy corpses piled around the walls of the POW camp. Even now, when I think about it, I get goosebumps, yikes!”

As soon as Preston finishes saying that, he presses the key and speaks.

“Damn, the smell of the 155mm air flares and mortar flares, as well as the gunpowder from the bullets, made me cough so hard that my bronchial tubes were about to burst. When I think about that scene, I can still smell that damned stench.”

We are all quietly listening to the two men’s tale of bravery, when suddenly Amy’s voice bursts out.

“Hey, are you praying for something like that to happen in Big Rock right now? Why the hell are you even bringing that up now? You can tell that story on YouTube! I want to be home in Chicago by dawn and have a nice, fluffy bed to sleep in. So, why don’t you tell me something else?”

Suddenly everyone burst into laughter at Amy’s remark.

I also drove the Bearcat along the gentle corner section leading to the right, smiling.

However, when I glanced at Team Leader Decker in the passenger seat, the look on his face was unusual.

He’s staring at us from behind through your side mirror.

The moment I saw that sight, I remembered the hag-like laughter of federal prosecutor Alan Wells that I had heard on the phone in the prison office building, and the words Amy had grumbled just a moment ago.

As Team Leader Decker turned around slightly to get a better view of the far rear, he heard the voices of Strauss and Grimes, who were sitting behind him.

“Shh!”

“I think something happened at Big Rock!”

I turned on my emergency lights and flashers and drove the Bearcat toward the side of the road.

As soon as all our vehicles stopped at the side of the road, we got out of the cars.

As I breathe in the already chilly dawn air, my mind seems to snap back to normal, and my eyes open wide at the sight of a flash of light from Big Rock, about two kilometers away.

The prison area was brightly lit, so I could see what was happening there with my own eyes.

Yellow flames appeared and disappeared from the watchtowers, and somewhere inside the prison, a pillar of fire rose.

Then, after a while, the sound of an explosion echoes.

There were continuous flashes of light from the main prison building to the main gate, and shortly thereafter, gunshots could be heard in a chaotic manner.

On the lead Bearcat side, most of the Gold team members, including me and Decker, on the Suburban side behind us, Amy, Deputy Team Leader O’Connor, and our new recruit Morgan Kane, and on the Bearcat behind them, Team Leader Dawson and the Silver team members were standing.

We all stare at Big Rock Federal Penitentiary with our mouths agape.

“Fuck! It looks like there’s chaos in the prison.”

As O’Connor speaks loudly, people’s eyes turn to him.

But Amy, standing next to O’Connor, suddenly points her finger at Team Leader Dawson, standing in the rear Bearcat, and shouts.

“Jim (Team Leader Dawson), how are you? Are you happy now? Huh?”

“What do you mean, Captain (Amy)?”

“Fuck, isn’t this what you wanted to happen? That’s why you were raving about those fucking Taliban POW camp riots?”

Dawson didn’t respond to her prodding, but turned his head toward our bearcat and asked,

“Kim! What are you going to do? Are you going to go in or not?”

There is no choice.

It makes sense for federal agents to help each other, but it also makes no sense for them to pretend not to know and run away after leaving Nick Gomez there.

I yelled at everyone.

“First, we all head back to Big Rock. Depending on the situation, we’ll help the guards maintain control of the prison and, if necessary, get Nick Gomez out.”

At my words, Amy asks, pointing with her hand in the direction of the prison.

“Still, we’ll have to coordinate with the guards at Big Rock that we’re going in. If we’re not careful, they might mistake us for the ones trying to break out the guys, and we could come under concentrated fire from the watchtower.”

However, as soon as Jangsenun finished speaking, a notification sound rang on our smartphone.

In the meantime, I checked my phone and saw a text message with a photo of the interior of the Big Rock Prison that I had seen earlier in the office building.

“Who sent this? Was it from the guards?”

When Strauss asks, Preston looks at his teammates standing on his left and right and answers.

“I sent you the pictures I took while I was at Big Rock, in case I ever go back there again. And I’m also sending you the contact pictures of the operations manager, warden, and deputy warden there.”

As he said, a picture of the emergency contact list for the prison’s essential operating staff was sent to our phones.

As I and the other old men looked at Preston, unable to hide the laughter that was breaking out in the midst of all this, he smiled awkwardly and said.

“I packed it just in case, just in case.”

Seriously, Joe Preston, if any of you ever try to call this guy Rain Man again, I’m going to get that guy kicked off the face of the earth, no matter what.

“0.6 clicks to the Big Rock main gate! They’re trying to hijack the prison transport vehicles and break through the main gate, so whatever happens, don’t let them get out of the prison grounds!”

Team Leader Decker, who was talking to Correctional Officer Pearson on his smartphone, relayed the situation to our operational radio network.

At that moment, far ahead and to the right of my BearCat, which I was driving at 50 miles per hour, I saw Big Rock Federal Penitentiary.

“About 20 skinheads in 3 vans and 2 SUVs are heading to the main gate right now! The guards on the watchtower are exchanging gunfire with them and it looks like they’re going to breach the gate any minute! You need to get here quick, IRS agents!”

Team Leader Decker was on speaker mode talking to Correctional Officer Pearson, so everyone could hear his urgent voice.

“Razor that, big rock! ETA 30 seconds!”

After finishing the call, Decker stuffed his phone into the plate carrier compartment, just as Strauss, sitting behind the passenger seat, shouted into the wireless network.

“Lock and load! Lock and load!”

Crunch!

Clank! Clank!

Taking that as a signal, our team members simultaneously pulled the charging handles of their MP7 submachine guns and HK416 rifles.

A moment later, Team Leader Decker shouted, pointing to the left, about 200 meters ahead.

“Their van is moving in, Kim!”

Between the concrete walls surrounding the prison, there was a single, massive steel door, which was the main entrance to Big Rock.

The office and operations facilities have been taken over by the rioters, and the main gate is now open.

And inside, a van is seen being used by the correctional authorities to transport prisoners.

“Shhh! Shhh! Shhh!”

I crossed the center line and drove the Bearcat toward the van.

Then he shouted at Team Leader Decker.

“Chief, tell Silver Team’s Bearcats to intercept the vehicles coming out behind that van!”

“Razor!”

Then he shouted at our men sitting in the back seats.

“Crash! Crash! Crash!”

The crew was already wearing their seatbelts, but they were warned again.

Just as my warning was being sent out, a van pulled out of the main gate and started turning left onto the road.

They also quickly move, perhaps noticing the Bearcat’s headlights and warning lights.

But at that time, the distance between the van and our Bearcat was less than 20 meters.

Kwaaaaang!

The light van was lifted into the air as the right rear of the van hit the road.

Even then, I kept pressing the accelerator pedal, and soon the front of the Bearcat body continued to move forward while lifting the lower part of the van body.

Boom!

Now the van was completely overturned, but I didn’t slow down and kept pressing the accelerator.

I pushed the overturned van onto the road and drove forward a few dozen meters before quickly stepping on the brake pedal.

Perhaps because our armored vehicle had hit it so hard, the van continued to fly sparks in all directions and slid for more than 10 meters before stopping.

“Grimes, Lambert, Gow!”

As Team Leader Decker shouted, the two agents near the rear entrance quickly got out.

As they approached the overturned van, guns aimed, I moved the Bearcat again.

After making a U-turn on the narrow two-lane road, we head back toward the prison gates, when suddenly bullets fly into the front window of our armored vehicle and explode.

Thud! Thud! Puff puff!

Team Leader Dawson’s Bearcat, which had been following them, seemed to have gone inside the prison, as there was nothing in front of the main gate.

Thud! Thud! Thud thud!

As bullets rang out across the front of the Bearcat again, Team Leader Decker shouted over the radio.

“There’s a guy firing a rifle bullet from the guard tower at the main gate! Joe (Preston)! Wipe them out!”

At those words, Preston, who was sitting behind the driver’s seat, picks up a .50 caliber anti-material rifle and moves it towards the gun turret.

Then, as our vehicle approached the main gate, we began to hear Preston’s sniper rifle gunfire.

Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!

Every time his sniper rifle fired, dust could be seen rising from the ground around the main gate.

“Entering the main gate! Everyone, prepare! Everyone, prepare!”

As I shout, Strauss and Kane, who remained behind, put their guns out of the armored vehicle through the left and right gun ports and prepared to fire.

Puppup …

Shit, as soon as I pass through the front gate, bullets start raining down.

We could see bullets exploding not only on our car but also on the road leading to the main prison building about 100 meters ahead.

“We have Dawson’s car at 10 o’clock, Kim!”

Team Leader Decker pointed with his finger to a distance of about 30 meters to the left of the driveway.

Team Leader Dawson’s Bearcat, which had arrived first, had already stopped another van and the SUV following it by pushing them all the way to the watchtower.

The Silver Team members were returning fire at the men shooting from all directions.

“Shh!”

With a single shout, Preston fell from the gun turret to the floor of the vehicle.

He shouts as he throws aside the M107 anti-material rifle he was holding.

“They’ve taken over all the watchtowers, we can see bullets flying from the watchtower at our two o’clock position!”

Damn, isn’t this not just another riot that happens in federal prisons, but something that’s escalating to the extreme, like the riots in the Taliban prison camps that Dawson and Preston were talking about earlier?

What happened to the federal correctional officers in the main office and operations building, where we stayed for about half a day, as well as the prison cells?

Now is not the time to worry about Nick Gomez, who was laundering money for these drug lords.

If we have to fight against the 357 inmates in this federal prison, we have to worry about Pearson and his colleagues, and if we’re not careful, our own lives.
