Job

“Kim! It’s been a while!”

As soon as you enter the bar, you are greeted by Sergeant Hayward, the leader of the Northern Police Department SWAT team.

I responded by shaking his hand warmly.

“Bob! How’s your team doing these days?”

“Damn, with the holiday season upon us, all the crazy guys are out on the streets, and not a single day goes by without a hitch. Yesterday, five guys dressed as Santa Claus tried to rob an insurance company office, mistaking it for a bank. They tore out a vault full of customer records with a tow truck and ran off, only to have the tow truck fall into the Chicago Canal and have to be rescued by firefighters. Our SWAT Bearcats chased them for exactly 100 meters, and the situation ended without them even taking their guns out of their holsters.”

“No way (really?)!”

Hayward laughs, revealing his teeth at my reaction.

“Oh, thank you for helping my brother-in-law’s (building) supplies store increase sales. He said he was happy that the remodeling of the Niles Korean shops helped increase sales at the end of the year.”

“It’s nothing, Bob.”

“And… I heard a lot of your team members were injured because of the federal prison incident. How’s everyone?”

At those words, I shook my head.

Then, reluctantly, I told him.

“Dawson’s team suffered damage that left them unable to operate for a while.”

“Hey, sorry~.”

Hayward comforts me by patting my shoulder.

“But don’t you think the higher-ups wouldn’t just let Kim’s SWAT team play in the back basement of a federal building?”

“Yes. New teams are about to be ‘activated’, and I came to meet the leader of one of those teams today.”

At my words, Hayward looks over his shoulder at the bar tables inside the pub.

Then, he noticed the leader of the Cobalt team, Peter McGraw, and started staring at him.

I made an appointment today to meet with Team Leader McGraw and clarify something before the Cobalt team begins operations with us.

Hayward was on the scene the night the Cobalt team was ambushed and destroyed by street gangs.

So, he immediately recognizes Team Leader Cobalt and has an eye for understanding the situation.

He wipes the smile off his face and whispers to me.

“Anyway, always watch your back!”

After saying that, he throws his fist at me.

I bumped my fist into his, then turned to Team Leader McGraw.

“Peter!”

I called out to him as he sat on the bar stool with his back to me.

Then, he gets up from his chair and greets me.

“It’s been a while, Team Leader.”

“Kim! Call me Kim.”

As I sat down, the bartender recognized me, nodded, and brought me my usual beer.

“How is your body?”

I ask the Cobalt team leader, and he slyly holds up a beer bottle to me.

Only after I toasted with my bottle did he answer.

“All five of us are ready for duty, except Ingram, who still needs plastic surgery. We also have a written medical clearance from the hospital a month ago for field operations.”

He suddenly takes out a briefcase from under the bar table, takes out a document folder, and shoves it at me.

When I opened the folder, it was a confirmation document from the hospital doctors that these five people had been discharged with a full recovery.

As I examine them, Team Leader McGraw speaks cautiously.

“Director Coulson told me that before we can return to the front lines, we need your final approval, Kim. So I thought it was a good thing that you contacted me today.”

I glanced at McGraw as I looked through the documents.

Even though they were from the secret intelligence gathering unit of the former Treasury Secretary, Office 17, led by Paul Zaminsky, the atmosphere wasn’t too bad when they first joined us.

All of these team members were always humble and willing to learn from us, even in the smallest of things, and when an actual incident occurred, they even risked their lives to save my life.

However, at that time, there was a bit of tension and awkwardness between us because of Paul Zaminski and Michael Kelly, those American purebred bastards, and it seems that the atmosphere is highlighted even more in the current situation.

Team Leader McGraw looks at me, sweating profusely, then opens his mouth again with difficulty.

“I’m going to get straight to the point, Kim. We’re no longer with Paul (Director Zaminski) or Michael (Deputy Director Kelly). I know Kim has a very rocky relationship with them, so it’s not easy for me to say this, but… we all need this job. So if you could get us back out there… we’d really appreciate it.”

I closed the folder containing their verification documents and placed them on the bar table.

Then I asked Team Leader McGraw.

“Before that…. let me ask you this, Peter.”

“Ask me anything, Kim.”

I took a long sip of my beer before speaking, then put the bottle down and asked.

“You all suffered serious injuries from the gang’s ambush, including gunshot wounds, burns, and broken bones. Do you still want to continue doing this? Even though Cromwell, the former commissioner, has changed to McKellen, the new commissioner, their expectations of Task Force Blue have not changed. That means we will continue to take on dangerous missions, and some that may rival the dangerous situations that the Cobalt team has experienced. Do you still want to do this job?”

After a while, Team Leader McGraw responds quietly, fiddling with his beer bottle.

“Kim, our Cobalt agents had been working as undercover officers for the Presidential Protection Corps, the DEA, and the NYPD for many years before they were recruited by Zaminski’s 17th Planning Office.”

“I know.”

“You know, Kim? This job is our life, our very existence. It’s a way to make a living, but it’s also what got us here, and it’s probably the only thing we’re good at, so we want to keep doing it, even if it means risking our lives.”

After saying that, he turned his chair back and sat down.

Then, he turned his head towards the center of the hall where the tables were placed.

Surprisingly, sitting at the table closest to us were the rest of the team: Carl Breacher, Denton Smith, Wayne McCarthy, and Henry Pitts.

They all wave their hands at me or nod their heads slightly in greeting.

I paused for a moment, then raised my hand to greet them.

However, I was quite embarrassed by the situation in which all of them were present.

In the absence of Team Leader Dawson and the Silver Team, I came to see the liver of Team Cobalt, the only team that would protect our backs…

Surprisingly, a group of middle-aged men appeared, not hiding their earnest desire to return to the field.

As I looked at the members sitting around the hall table, each of them an expert in their own right, many thoughts crossed my mind.

Jim Dawson, who eventually resigned, me, who was still reeling from the thought of seeing him, and the people who desperately wanted to get back on the job even though they barely survived being nearly killed by street gangs.

Even though we do the same job, we have such different opinions. It really made me think a lot.

At that moment, Team Leader McGraw takes out another folder of documents from his briefcase and hands it to me.

As I accept it and look at him, he explains while watching my expression.

“Here is the general manager’s permission document for our Cobalt team members to return to the field. If Kim signs these five documents, we can be back in action tomorrow.”

Phew!

Even if I hadn’t made this arrangement with McGraw tonight, I think Coulson would have eventually made it so that I would have to meet with all of my team members in person and decide whether or not they should sign.

Like a little kid who eats ‘damn’ M&Ms, eats ‘fuck’ 50s, and is a ‘fucking’ old man with no ‘fucking’ sense of humor.

However, when I looked at the old men sitting over there again, I don’t know if it was my imagination, but I felt like I could feel their sincerity.

At least from what I can see now, they don’t want to do this dangerous work just to make ends meet, but they want to get back to work because they consider this work an important part of their lives.

I think about five minutes passed as I looked back and forth between them and Team Leader McGraw sitting next to me.

I said nothing and started signing the documents granting them permission to return to the field.

As I was signing the five documents one by one, I could hear the old men cheering quietly from the table.

I took the signed documents and walked over to the table.

As I approached, the old men stood up from their seats and soon shook hands with each of them.

And every time I shook hands, I handed over a signed document to each and every person.

Finally, he handed his papers over to Team Leader McGraw and spoke to everyone.

“There’s one condition, Gang!”

People stare at me when I say something.

“We will re-evaluate our marksmanship skills with Team Leader Decker, and only those who meet his standards will be sent to the field. Also, some people still need physical therapy, but since they cannot be physically restricted in any way, only those who have completed their physical therapy period will be sent to the field first.”

The old men nodded or gave a thumbs up in agreement to what I said.

After I sorted out my expression, I spoke to them in a stern tone.

“I think you all heard about the great damage the Silver Team suffered. But still, they all wanted to return to the field…”

Whatever happens to you later, don’t blame me… That’s what I was trying to say.

But, at this moment, whatever ghost possessed me, those were not the words coming out of my mouth.

“I hope that all Cobalt team members will work with their own safety as much as their mission. If they do so, I believe that Cobalt Team will become one team and one family with our Task Force Blue.”

What the hell, what did I just say?

Without even realizing that I was bewildered, the four members including Team Leader McGraw began clapping for me.

After drinking beer and tequila for about an hour with the Cobalt team guys, I left the bar after getting a call that Claire was home.

I had to hurry up and make Florida Queen some kimchi fried rice or kimchi stew with lots of butter and oligosaccharides.

I walk a little towards the road and wait for a taxi, but the damn cold wind keeps blowing.

In the strong wind that felt like my ears were going to fall off, I sorted out the complicated thoughts that had been tangled in my head for the past few days.

As I was coming to see the livers of the Cobalt team members, I felt like my complicated mind was being organized without me even realizing it.

It wasn’t that my mind was becoming simpler because of the alcohol, but rather that these things were coming together as if they had been touched by the delicate hands of an old man at the Daejeon Yankee Market watch shop who had repaired hundreds of Rolex watches.

The appearance of Team Leader Dawson, Claire’s words, the earnest eyes of the Cobalt agents, these are the things.

After a while, I found myself smiling without realizing it as I looked at the moon hanging in the cold night sky.

I don’t know how long it’s been since I’ve laughed, but strangely enough, I do.

As I was laughing at the moon like a crazy person, a moment later an SUV with bright headlights approached from the other side.

Instead of passing by at a fast speed on the road, it approached slowly as if it was watching me from afar.

As I always do, I put my hand inside my coat and grabbed my Glock 23 from the holster on my waist.

It was in a state where I could pull it out and use it right away if needed.

But then the black SUV in question started slowly approaching me.

Something seems a bit fishy.

No, not a little, quite a bit!

A moment later, an SUV stops in front of me.

Then, the passenger window rolled down, but by then I had already taken the gun out of its holster and hidden it behind my waist.

“Hey, Kim!”

I heard someone’s voice inside the car, and it startled me so much that it sent shivers down my neck and spine.
