Warning
“Trevor! Sergeant Trevor Miller! What the hell are you doing here?”
As I screamed in surprise, he opened the passenger door.
“It’s been a while, Kim.”
I got into the car and shook his hand.
From the looks of Trevor’s face, it was clear he wasn’t in Chicago to visit.
He is wearing a shabby jacket that looks like a US military uniform, and his face is covered with beard except for the area around his eyes.
Then, before I could even collect my surprised expression, the gloomy spy started the car.
“Old Koreatown, near the Chinese restaurant, 2nd floor, right?”
It’s no surprise that my latest home address is coming from a CIA undercover agent, not the Chicago Police Department.
But after saying that, Sergeant Miller seemed to be waiting for my reaction.
“why?”
“Do you have any questions about my current home address, Kim?”
I said to him indifferently as I put on my seatbelt belatedly.
“Am I supposed to be surprised that a spook knows where I live?”
Of course, my residential address hasn’t been updated since the fire station building was destroyed by the gang’s anti-tank rocket attack.
The two-story house in Old Koreatown is known only to those close to me.
Also, no one knows the address of my parents’ restaurant.
The restaurant is registered under the name of my uncle’s lawyer who lives in Boston, and all matters related to the IRS are handled through that lawyer.
So, I didn’t really care that Sergeant Miller had figured out my whereabouts, either through someone on my team or using some kind of CIA covert technique.
Moments later, Miller saw a red light at the intersection and stopped his car.
Immediately after that, he looked at me for a moment, picked up the tablet PC that was on the dashboard, and threw it on my lap.
“Open the folder containing the PDF file.”
“What is this, Sajji (Boss)?”
“There’s something Kim needs to see, and that’s why I came to you today.”
I touched the folder icon and the document appeared immediately.
It was a 16-page file, and my eyes widened the moment I saw the pictures on the first few pages.
It was my photo that I had been using on my federal agent ID.
In addition to the photo, there was also my IRS job history and my old home address that the Las Palmas guys had blown up.
“This looks like information the Las Palmas guys got when they tried to harm me before. Where did you find this, damn it?”
Of the people who have this, everyone except the Chicago PD and the FBI has either been killed by our SWAT or is in federal prison.
However, Sergeant Miller gave me an answer that was completely different from what I expected.
“It was secured in a backwater warehouse in Juarez.”
“Mexico? You mean the Mexican border city of Juarez?”
He strokes his beard and nods.
“Instead of hunting for the slush funds and treasures of Third World dictators, I’m working with the DEA and FBI on a covert operation to disrupt the fentanyl supply line from China to Mexico. The file on Kim was found in a federal police safe in Juarez.”
“Huh? Mexican Federal Police?”
“Tch! He’s a federal police officer, but he’s one of those corrupt cops who sells information to the cartel guys. Anyway, the fact that this information is on the ground means that the cartel guys are watching Kim.”
At that moment, I remembered the time when I and all of my team members were attacked by the Colombian cartel Tacari, Guillermo Vega, who were in league with the Mexican cartel.
Even thinking about it now gives me chills down my spine.
As the intersection lights turned green, Sergeant Miller started his car.
He spoke to me calmly while driving.
“I don’t know what got you involved with the Juarez Cartel, but I’m here to warn you to be careful.”
I scrolled all the way down to the problematic file on my tablet PC screen.
Then, looking back at the page about me, I asked Miller:
“Shichi, when did you find this?”
“It was a week ago.”
As I sighed, he looked at me and spoke to me as if he was having a conversation while concentrating on driving.
“There’s no need to be nervous in advance, Kim. I’m just letting you know in case, and it’s not like you’re in any immediate danger. Our team swooped in and recovered this information before it got into the hands of the cartel.”
Instead of asking what he meant, Miller lifted his chin and explained it to me right away.
“Aside from the files on Kim, this was an operation to recover information on undercover agents and their informants that our federal agencies had established in Juarez and Cancun, so unless you were doing undercover work across the border, there doesn’t seem to be much of a problem. That’s our analysis, but I came to Chicago for a moment to let you know.”

I was about to put the tablet PC back on the dashboard, but Sergeant Miller motioned for me to take it.
First of all, I thought I should do what I had to think about when I got home, so I put my tablet PC in my backpack.
I felt like pulling out my gun right now, pulling the slide back, and holding it in my hand.
As we pulled onto the freeway heading toward Old Koreatown, I belatedly tried to have a chat with Sergeant Miller.
“By the way… Ssajji, instead of going treasure hunting, you jumped into the drug war. That’s surprising, Ssajji. Is that worth it?”
At my words, the spy, a legendary Devguru operator, shook his head from side to side.
“If your SWAT team is going toe-to-toe with Colombian thugs here in Chicago, what about the Mexican border? It’s a war zone there. I never dreamed the scale of the drug war would be this big. We need to wipe out the Chinese who are sending that fucking fentanyl all the way to Mexico so we can do our job in Mexico. If we keep doing this and more Americans are falling down the streets as zombies from fentanyl-based drugs, we’re going to have to go to World War III with China over fentanyl.”
The most serious drug problem across the United States today is one based on the illicit drug fentanyl.
Not only is the process of eliminating the supply and trafficking of these illegal drugs by mobilizing strong public power, but the social cost of treating and rehabilitating addicts is on the verge of approaching the cost of the United States fighting a war overseas.
“Is it that serious?”
“Just wait and see, Kim. You’ll see what I’m saying come true. We need to shift the U.S. military from Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan to this drug war, and wipe them out as soon as possible. Shhh!”
When you think about the incidents our IRS SWAT has been through because of Guillermo Vega and Nick Gomez, Sergeant Miller’s words don’t sound like something from a distant past.
Whatever they do is fine, I just hope they don’t get in trouble with us.
“Therefore, after the entire building is surrounded by CPD (Chicago Police Department) personnel, the Gold Team should enter through the front door and the Cobalt Team should enter through the back door simultaneously.”
I explained, pointing a laser pointer at a photo of a building northwest of the Chicago Loop floating on a large screen.
Director Coulson, who is still picking up M&Ms like chickens on a henhouse, Team Leader Hancock, Amy, McGrady, and three members of the Chicago Police Department’s Financial Crimes Unit who will be moving with us today are listening to my briefing.
The target of the operational meeting that took place all morning this morning was the cash stash of the Drex Corporation, a money laundering operation worth millions of dollars.
The organization was formed by retired mafia bosses from the Chicago mafia, the Outfit, who joined hands with notorious loan sharks and illegal goods dealers throughout Chicago.
On the surface, it looks like a small business that is trying its best to make money, but in reality, it is far from legal.
The organization’s main source of income is laundering large amounts of illegal money, and its secondary sources of income are loan sharking and handling illegal stolen goods.
Even aside from money laundering and loan sharking, the illegal items they dealt in went beyond theft-related items such as precious metals and often included illegal weapons and drugs.
In short, they are a different breed of human scum from the black and Hispanic street gangs that run on drugs, illicit goods, and prostitution.
In addition, these criminals were evading investigation by frequently moving the hiding locations of large amounts of cash, for which they were requested to launder money every two to three weeks, and this time, we were lucky enough to have the opportunity to raid this place.
“The number of security personnel identified at the scene is 2 outside and 8 inside, and they are all believed to be carrying pistols and machine guns. Before and after the entry operation, our SWAT will take care of them.”
At these words, the financial crime investigation team members nodded their heads one after another with expressions of relief.
Then, while watching them, I said the following:
“And just before the entry operation, we will have CPD personnel give the warrant execution notice. Since this is your ‘show,’ it would be best for you to let everyone know when the show begins.”
At my words, the veteran plainclothes detectives from the financial crime investigation team nodded again.
They say they’ve been struggling to bring down the thugs who’ve been stealing Chicagoans’ hard-earned money through financial fraud and hacking for the past eight months.
Back in the day, when Guillermo Vega’s gang was cleaning up the streets of Chicago, they were also inadvertently simultaneously destroying corrupt cops within the Chicago Police Department.
Naturally, that took a toll on the Chicago police, who couldn’t even show their faces for a while, and whatever the case, they became estranged from our IRS.
Since then, the two agencies have been rebuilding their estranged relationship through joint investigations, so I must give the Chicago police as much credit as possible for their work in today’s operation.
Of course, this wasn’t my original, rambling idea, but something that Fisher and Coulson had been insisting on.
This atmosphere is likely to continue for some time, as even the most powerful federal agencies cannot do anything on the streets of Chicago without the help of these Chicago police officers.
Anyway, in this raid, our IRS SWAT will secure a large amount of cash and then assist our Criminal Investigation Division agents in securing it.
Of course, you first have to destroy the gunmen guarding the cash boxes and wads of cash that are as big as those in any small-town bank.
“That concludes the description of the building entry procedures. Any questions?”
I asked, turning off the laser pointer and putting it in my pocket.
The financial crime investigation team members also covered their document folders, looked at each other, and shook their heads from side to side.
I looked at the Cobalt team members sitting on the far side of the long conference table, and they didn’t seem terribly nervous.
Since it had been a very long time since we had been out in the field, Director Coulson and I were nervous, but they actually seemed calm.
Team Leader Decker is also staring at them like me, holding a takeout coffee cup.
I moved to my seat near the large monitor for PT, and just in time, Director Coulson stood up from his seat.
Then he looks at the Chicago police and says:
“Then, if we receive a report that there are no unusual occurrences on site, let’s proceed with the operation at the agreed time. Everyone, please be careful on the streets.”
After saying that, he stuffs M&M pieces into his mouth again.
After a while, all the team members and detectives sitting in the conference room stood up.
After a few days off, it’s time to get back out onto the bullet-filled streets of Gotham City.
Suddenly, I remembered the picture of a praying girl and the phrase written next to it that I would often see when I took a taxi in downtown Daejeon when I was young.
It is the phrase, ‘Safe today too.’
