Side Story 31: The Struggle of a Former Federal Agent

As soon as David Crowley learned of the whereabouts of Agent Mendez’s family, Mr. Kim Chul-jae, or rather, Agent Sam Dietz’s HRT team, stepped in.

A total of 22 HRT members, including those who flew in late from Quantico (FBI headquarters), departed aboard Florida National Guard UH-60 helicopters.

Initially, Claire and I had intended to accompany Agent Dietz and his party as CBP observers.

However, we couldn’t keep up because CBP wanted something in return for the FBI and ATF giving Crowley up first.

Agent Dietz had promised Claire before they left that he would rescue them all, and now he had to participate in the main event of this embarrassing case.

Now, with full air support from Customs and Border Protection led by Claire, the main event begins.

“Epsilon One, initiate entry!”

“Epsilon Two, entry initiated!”

“Epsilon Three, enter! Enter!”

Under the watchful eyes of Claire, myself, and a dozen federal agents, a surprise attack was launched on Lennox’s hideout, located three kilometers from here.

Across Mary Jane Lake, to the northwest of where our situation room trailer stands, a blockbuster mayhem is unfolding right now.

The full-scale raid to apprehend Lennox’s men began with Florida State Police and local sheriff’s officers initially surrounding the roads surrounding the ranch.

“I still can’t believe it.”

As Claire’s immediate superior, Team Leader Stephen DePaul, speaks while looking at the monitors, the agents’ gaze turns to him.

He kept his eyes on the monitor and recited the next line that people were curious about.

“I can’t believe that this whole operation was set up in an hour, with Crowley’s burner phone calling Lennox, getting his final location. And without the FBI, ATF, or anyone else trying to take control of the operation. Can you believe that?”

At those words, Claire vomits as she examines the aircraft surveillance radar monitor.

“Lennox, if that crazy guy could target the President or Vice President with a Russian-made portable SAM, there’s no way the FBI, ATF, and our CBP would do anything stupid, Chief. Don’t we have days like this?”

“Well, we can’t let a VIP flying in from the White House get shot down by a missile and end up as food for alligators in Florida.”

People chuckle at those words.

While the tense crowd is cracking jokes, a large-scale raid is underway at the scene of the operation.

Sixty-two FBI SWAT officers, ATF SWAT officers and heavily armed agents from both agencies, led by 16 BearCats and Bears (the civilian version of the US Army’s MRAP heavy tactical armored vehicle), surrounded the ranch property from three locations and entered.

Above the ranch, an EP-3 aerial surveillance plane belonging to the Clare Customs and Border Protection Agency monitors the situation on the ground from within range of a man-portable surface-to-air missile.

Naturally, the aerial surveillance device relayed every move of Lennox’s gang inside the ranch to the raid teams in real time.

And just in case, a US Air Force MQ-9 Reaper armed with Hellfire missiles was on standby along with an aerial surveillance aircraft.

Since it is a known fact that there are Man-Pad missiles inside Lennox’s ranch, this ground raid is being conducted instead of a helicopter assault.

ATF SWAT officers on rip boats entered Mary Jane Lake near the ranch, while FBI and ATF agents entered from the bushy hills behind the ranch.

And to counter the heavy weapons carried by Lennox’s men, FBI SWAT and State Sheriff’s SWAT broke through the main gate in armored vehicles.

All of this is being transmitted back to the CBP field situation room trailer here via aerial surveillance footage, MQ-9 reconnaissance footage, and helmet cams and dash cam footage from field teams.

I found myself holding my breath as I watched the scenes unfold on eight large monitors from behind.

“Kim, take it!”

“Thank you, Team Leader.”

In the midst of this chaos, Team Leader DePaul hands me a bottle of water and walks over to Claire.

Afterwards, Claire and other CBP agents watch the raid on Lennox’s ranch.

“Hey, you’re shooting a Surrey Caliber (.30 caliber)? Sweep the top of the warehouse!”

“There’s a guy wielding a Fifty Caliber on the lakeside dock! Take him down! Take him down!”

In the aerial surveillance footage, ATF SWAT officers were seen landing on the ranch in a lip boat.

They were seen firing three smoke grenades towards the dock, then immediately firing anti-material rounds at the men who were then firing an old-fashioned M1919 machine gun at them.

Two agency personnel coming down from the bushy hill behind the ranch also opened fire on the M60 machine gunners who were firing concentrated fire from a nearby watchtower.

As the watchtower becomes engulfed in beehives, the helmet cam footage of your agents shows a startled Lennox mercenary jumping down from the watchtower.

Also near the ranch’s main gate, aerial surveillance footage showed three men preparing to fire M72 rocket launchers from behind trucks before being shot down by FBI snipers.

Smoke grenades and tear gas were fired around the fallen men, and soon a thick smoke screen covered the area.

This sight was literally a battlefield.

“Goliath One, Two, Three are breaking through the gate and blocking the Tangos’ machine gun barrage! Follow-up vehicles, charge into the ranch without stopping! Fucking, charge now!”

The voice of the FBI SWAT commander, a Chinese-American, came over the command radio.

Immediately after, at his direction, five Bearcats burst through the ranch gate and raced through the grounds.

The scene was transmitted to us as reconnaissance footage from the MQ-9 Reaper, and it was like watching a scene from ‘Fast & Furious.’

When I think of similar experiences I’ve had in the past, my blood boils inside me.

“Goliath Six, Seven, and Eight have arrived at the ranch, at the mansion! Bam! RPG, RPG!”

On the road that stretches about 200 meters from the ranch gate to the mansion, bearcats simultaneously scattered to the left and right.

Immediately afterwards, two explosions followed in the middle of the road, after which the Bearcats stopped on the side of the road and began to pour concentrated fire on the RPG7 gunners.

One of the guys who fired an RPG7 high-explosive grenade from the bushes around the mansion suddenly starts to run away in a golf cart.

And the guy who appears to be the assistant who couldn’t get on the cart runs feverishly after the cart.

The CBP agents inside the situation room chuckle at the absurd sight.

Moments later, the Bearcats fired a dozen smoke grenades and tear gas inside and outside the mansion, and once again broadcast an arrest warrant and search warrant for Lennox and his men, urging them to surrender.

By then, agents who had entered from the lake and hill sides had killed and arrested most of Lennox’s mercenaries.

No one had yet emerged from the mansion where five or six tear gas canisters had been fired, and FBI special agents, using Bearcats as cover and aiming their guns, were poised to storm into the mansion at any moment.

The atmosphere on the scene, as seen through these three videos – footage from an aerial surveillance plane, footage from the helmet cams of field agents, and footage from the Bearcat’s dash cam – was reminiscent of a first-person FPS game.

Even though I wasn’t there, I knew all too well what the standoff smelled like and what it sounded like.

So, I couldn’t take my eyes off the monitors and held my breath as I wiped my sweaty palms on my pants.

As the standoff dragged on, all SWAT officers aboard the Bearcat disembarked and completely surrounded the mansion.

A CBP agent points to a large screen showing two BearCats moving backwards toward the mansion.

“Now, it looks like the FBI is going to enter the mansion?”

From then on, everyone kept quiet and watched the scene.

Even on the command radio network, reports are coming in from each team that they are ready to enter the 150-pyeong mansion.

I feel uneasy just watching it.

I almost feel like I can smell the burning fuel coming from the side exhausts of the Bearcats right now.

The six teams surrounding the mansion have completed their reports before entering.

The moment I thought, “The most difficult and dangerous final stage of this operation is about to begin…”, a flash of light spread across the situation room screens.

Kuuuuuuuung!

At the same time, the entire situation room trailer shook as if an earthquake had occurred.

There is no such thing as exaggerated orange flames created in the movies.

Instead, black smoke was rising dozens of meters high from where the mansion had been, and dust was rising around the mansion.

The Bearcats that had been stationed around me were nowhere to be seen, nor were the FBI SWAT officers, and soon my heart began to pound.

Oh, shit, I’m screwed.

It’s not just fucked up, it’s fucking terribly fucked up.

***

After the explosion inside the ranch, six helicopters flew overhead to quickly evacuate injured FBI and state police SWAT officers.

During the surprise operation, they didn’t allow helicopters near the ranch for fear that Lennox’s group would notice in advance, but now the situation is different.

Two UH-60 helicopters belonging to the Customs and Border Protection also flew to the location of the situation room trailer.

One Black Hawk helicopter unloaded CBP Florida Branch Chief Jacob Peck and his entourage, while the other unloaded a backup generator for installation in the situation room trailer.

Until this operation is concluded, CBP aerial surveillance forces are to conduct surveillance and search operations in the area.

But, with the CBP branch chief showing up, it was already uncomfortable to pretend to be a CBP agent, so now it was time to get out of the trailer and hide.

Even though I’m close enough to Claire’s direct supervisor, Team Leader DePaul, to the point where he’d turn a blind eye to my existence, Claire could be in trouble if the CBP Florida branch chief finds out about my true identity.

With that in mind, I stopped listening to Team Leader DePaul briefing Chief Peck on the situation on the ground and quietly headed toward the trailer door.

So I’m about to go out of the trailer and hide in a quiet place, when all of a sudden I hear Claire’s voice.

“A suspicious rotary wing aircraft (helicopter) has appeared!”

At those words, Team Leader DePaul stops his briefing and turns his gaze towards Claire and the radar officer.

I also stopped walking and looked over the shoulders of the CBP agents standing in front of me to see my girlfriend.

“A helicopter was spotted 17 kilometers northwest of Lennox’s ranch, and according to the footage sent by our EP-3 airborne surveillance aircraft in charge of that area…”

As Claire gestured, a picture from the radar operator to the main console operator appeared on the large monitor.

Because the photo was taken from high above, ordinary people would not be able to identify the helicopter model, but Claire and other air traffic control team members were able to identify it more than easily.

Claire walked over to Team Leader DePaul’s seat and pointed to the helicopter on the screen.

“This helicopter is a SA-342 Gazelle (French multi-purpose helicopter).”

At those words, several agents murmured, and Branch Manager Peck lifted his chin toward Claire.

It was a gesture to tell me to hurry up and explain further.

Claire explained to her superiors with an expression that made her feel certain about something.

“Lennox only had two helicopters: a UH-1 Huey and an SA-342 Gazelle. The Huey had already been shot down, and the SA-342 was nowhere to be found, even inside the ranch.”

The branch manager immediately asks a question at those words.

“Agent Shepherd, wasn’t the large-scale raid on the ranch conducted based on tracking of Lennox’s location via burner phone? Does that mean Lennox wasn’t staying at the ranch?”

Claire responds with a relaxed smile.

Several agents nodded as if they immediately realized something, and Claire explained what it was.

“Now that I think about it, it looks like Lennox was the one who lured us all to this ranch. He had a burner phone with the number we were tracking, and he was the one who connected the calls between Crowley and Lennox.”

When the branch manager didn’t seem to understand Claire’s explanation, Claire took the console operator’s cell phone out of his jacket pocket.

Then he held his cell phone close enough to touch the operator’s cell phone and said:

“It’s actually a very simple method. Mid-level and above executives in Mexican cartels have another phone in a completely different place, and they use it as a relay to make calls. That way, the other party can’t track their location.”

Upon hearing that, Branch Manager Peck says what will happen next.

“In other words, Kyle Lennox intentionally placed a burner phone with the number we tracked on this farm, lured all three of our agency raid teams, and then detonated a large explosive device….”

The branch manager continued speaking while looking at the footage from inside the ranch being transmitted on large monitors.

The internal footage he watches shows the situation changing from a surprise attack by brave federal agents to an operation to evacuate the injured from a disaster site.

“When all the agencies are busy with the evacuation of our casualties, is that how you can run away so calmly?”

Claire nodded vigorously at the branch manager’s words.

From then on, a complete silence began to flow, making it hard to believe that there were a dozen or so people inside the trailer.

Claire quickly turned her gaze from the branch manager and Team Leader DePaul to me.

At that moment, I sensed something like a terrifying madness in Claire’s eyes.

At the same time, I could guess what would happen in a moment.

Immediately afterwards, the branch manager looked at Team Leader DePaul and Claire in succession, then spoke loudly.

“Fuck, we need to get that damn helicopter right now. What are you all doing? The FBI and ATF helicopters are busy evacuating the wounded, so now it’s time for CBP to take down that Lennox guy! Hurry up!”

As soon as the branch manager finished his urging words, Claire shouted at Team Leader DePaul.

“Team Leader! I’ll put six agents in two Black Hawks and give chase.”

“Then, take McGruder’s task force!”

At those words, Claire grabbed her Kevlar vest and her M4 rifle and headed toward the door where I was standing.

Claire is followed by five air raid squad agents carrying AR-15s and M4 rifles.

Sadly, it looks like the real heat is about to start.
