Side Story 34: The Struggle of a Former Federal Agent
Then, he spoke loudly into Claire’s ear again, even though he was also wearing the intercom headset.
“’Fucking’ tail rotor! Let me grab that Lennox guy’s helicopter’s tail rotor!”
Claire nods vigorously at those words and speaks to me through the intercom.
“Get ready to throw up, Chicago hotshot!”
I gave Claire a thumbs up and moved to the left side of the plane.
Then, like these CBP agents, I put on a harness that would keep me from falling out of the helicopter and hooked the safety loop at the end of the harness to a hook on the floor of the aircraft.
Next, he removed the high-power day/night scope, which was as large as the M4 rifle barrel, and turned on the visible laser target designator mounted on the front of the gun.
I put a palm print on it to see if the green laser beam was projected, then checked the external gauge to see how many rounds were left in the magazine.
From then on, my heart starts pounding.
The view outside the aircraft, where strong winds blow in that make it difficult to open your eyes, is filled with the beautiful natural scenery of Florida.
It’s hard to believe that in that beautiful scenery, red flares are flying around like flies.
Oh, shit!
Now is not the time to have such wild thoughts.
I pulled the charging handle, ejected the cartridge from the chamber, inserted a new cartridge, and placed the buttstock of the rifle firmly against my shoulder.
The Black Hawk helicopter piloted by Claire made several evasive maneuvers, banked sharply left and right.
Every now and then, we would briefly see Lennox’s SA-342 helicopter chasing us from behind, firing its mini-gun and M240 machine gun.
The evil white bastards were doggedly following us at a distance of 300 to 400 meters behind us.
A moment later, Claire called out over the intercom.
“Kim, about 900 meters ahead, just after we clear the hill at 2 o’clock, we’re going to go into a hovering position. Then, as soon as Lennox’s helicopter passes our position, we’re going to hit the tail rotor!”
“Razor that!”
“Kim!”
As I turn my head toward the cockpit, Claire speaks firmly.
“It’s a one shot deal! Once we hover over the hill, there’s nowhere to run. If Kim fails, they’ll immediately turn us into a hive of miniguns.”
As soon as I heard that, I started taking deep breaths.
With the butt of my gun pulled tight against my right shoulder, I sat on the left side of the cabin and watched Lennox’s helicopter.
A moment later, the helicopter’s nose is felt to tilt slightly, and Claire’s voice is heard.
“Kim, get ready, we’re going over the hill now! Get ready! Get ready!”
Just as the helicopter flew at high speed over the hilltop, Claire raised the helicopter’s nose high again.
Then, in an instant, the helicopter slowed down and stopped in midair.
At the same time, the Black Hawk helicopter descends as if riding a high-speed elevator.
Instead of the deep blue sky, the green of the lush bushes filled my field of vision.
As our helicopter lowers its altitude, the left side of the aircraft turns forward, providing me with an angle to fire forward.
Then, an endless expanse of bushes stretched out before my eyes, and right after that, Claire shouted.
“Now, Kim! Now!”
As we hear Claire’s voice, SA-342 passes overhead, directly above our helicopter, leaving a huge shadow behind.
Lennox’s helicopter was hovering about 60-70 meters in front of us and about 30 meters above us, and I shot the green visible laser at it.
But before the laser could even hit the SA-342’s tail rotor, my buffed vision had already taken aim.
I held my breath and quickly pulled the trigger.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
The tracer bullets extending from the M4 rifle’s muzzle were sucked in as if the tail rotor of the helicopter was a giant magnet.
Lennox’s helicopter also stopped belatedly, its nose tilted up, after three or four tracer rounds had already hit the tail rotor mechanism.
Unlike typical helicopter rail rotors, the SA-342’s tail rotor was housed within the vertical tail fin.
So, my flares hit there and make a more definite impact.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
Six flares hit their tail rotors, but to my dismay, their helicopter was still intact.
Then, the SA-342 helicopter starts to turn its nose to the right while hovering like us.
It was a measure to point the right side of the aircraft equipped with a mini-gun towards us.
I quickly pulled out the empty magazine and received a new one from the CBP agent behind me.
But as I was reloading, smoke started coming out of the tail of the SA-342 helicopter and it started spinning around.
Yay!
I quickly pulled the charging handle and continued to fire tracer rounds toward the SA-342 helicopter circling in the air.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
It’s a visible laser and a scope, and even if you just shoot roughly by looking at the flight trajectory of the tracer bullet, it will hit their helicopter.
Then, I saw a scene where the guy holding the mini gun was thrown out of the helicopter due to the centrifugal force of the helicopter.
I watched the thing fall into the bushes about 70-80 meters below, then turned my gaze back to the SA-342 helicopter, where it was spinning around like crazy with its tail on fire.
Lennox’s helicopter continued its tirade for another ten seconds or so before eventually crashing into the brush.
Because it was a forest full of large trees, the front and middle part of the helicopter was stuck in the bushes, with only the burning tail sticking up.
As I gaze down at the scene, half-absorbed, I hear Claire’s voice over the intercom.

“Holly Molly!”
Only then did I let out the breath I had been holding and answered Claire.
“Howley, Molly!”
Moments later, fire spread throughout the SA-342 fuselage, which was lying face down on the ground, and black smoke began to rise.
As I stared down at the sight, my chest, fingers, the back of my hand, and my cheeks were racing with adrenaline as if it were going to explode.

Claire reported the location to the situation room as she watched Lennox’s helicopter burst into flames and crash into the forest.
During that time, I provided first aid to wounded CBP agents and helicopter pilots, along with healthy CBP agents.
By the time the two men, who had been shot in the neck and shoulder, were treated, Claire had piloted our helicopter toward Kennedy Space Center.
Because the closest helicopter pad and emergency medical center to our location were both located there.
The condition of the two CBP agents, whose bleeding has been stopped, does not appear to be bad so far.
“Well done, well done, Agent Kim!”
A CBP Air Enforcement agent, his face and hands covered in blood, repeatedly taps me on the shoulder as he greets me.
This person probably still knows me as the CBP agent who applied from somewhere else.
When you write your report on this incident later, you should credit this guy with shooting down Lennox’s helicopter.
Anyway, that was later, and I nodded to him and said hello.
Then, he moved to Claire’s right cockpit.
As I looked at Claire, who was concentrating on piloting the Black Hawk helicopter, I saw that her face was a mess of sweat and tears.
I tapped Claire on the right arm and gave her a thumbs up.
Then Claire smiles brightly.
My girlfriend, who seemed like she could even go toe-to-toe with aliens, seems helpless at this moment as her heightened emotions release and tears flow.
“If you cross the narrow strait ahead, you’ll see the Kennedy Space Center!”
Claire says, wiping the tears from her face with the palm of her hand.
“Razor that!”
After answering that question, I sat back in the cockpit and took a deep breath.
I never dreamed that one date in New York City would lead to this blockbuster helicopter dogfight.
It’s something I’ve always thought about whenever I’m caught up in a firefight, but I’m starting to wonder if this moment isn’t a dream.
However, when I see my super-strong girlfriend piloting a helicopter, I realize that all of this is happening in my real world.
Everything that happened 5 minutes ago, 10 minutes ago, 30 minutes ago was a series of really close calls.
Seriously, when I go back to Chicago, I’m going to have to quit church.
After a while, something occurred to me and I fumbled through the compartments of my flak plate carrier.
After looking around the storage compartments here and there, I found what I wanted in the compartment near the waist holster and took it out.
I secretly took it out of the storage compartment while keeping an eye on Claire.
While Claire looked down at our helicopter as it entered the water, I opened the case lid of the thing.
Then, I took a deep breath and made a decision, not really a decision.
Perhaps, I thought, now would be the most appropriate time.
I held up the case to Claire, and soon she discovered it and was astonished.
What I was holding out to Claire was the Cartier ring I had brought from Manhattan for the proposal.
I pulled the intercom headset microphone to my mouth and said.
“Claire Shepherd! Will you be the mother of my future children?”
Claire snickers and tells me.
“Did you just say children? Children, not kids?”
When I nod my head vigorously to that question, Claire smiles shyly again.
Then he switches the cyclic joystick to his right hand, shows me his left hand, and answers.
“There’s only one child, Kim! Okay? Just one!”
At those words, I leaned my head toward Claire and kissed her cheek so hard that it made a squeaking sound.
Then, he put the ring on Claire’s finger.
Claire nods, staring intently at my eyes rather than the ring.
After wiping out from the world the white extremist militants who dream of overthrowing the United States federal government, and those guys with portable surface-to-air missiles and 7.62mm mini-Vulcans, he proposes…
Could there be a proposal in the world more thrilling and urgent than this?
If I propose to him twice, it seems like we’ll probably have to start World War III, so I think I have to live well with this person for the rest of my life.
As Claire returned to focusing on piloting the helicopter, I also took my place in the cockpit.
After a while, all the strength drains from my body and my eyelids become heavy.
Still, I sat upright without losing my posture.
I looked down at the blue ocean surface, holding my M4 rifle, and thought about what the future held for me and Claire.
But~.
But, you know.
If we ever actually raise children, I think we can tell today’s story over and over again at their bedside.
No, can I do it?
Is this former federal agent’s struggle for survival a bedtime story you can tell your child?
