Dragon’s Relic
The UK announced that it would establish a new research station in Antarctica and immediately moved equipment and supplies. Since it was only about 28 kilometers away from the existing base, inquiries poured in about whether the existing base would be closed or transferred. The UK responded that it would operate two bases simultaneously for the time being and then close the original base after a certain period of time.
Cha In-young is a former special forces soldier who has infiltrated Pyongyang several times. He is not known to the general public, but he is famous in the military. And he is one of three Koreans who know that the British are excavating something that resembles a dragon.
Cha In-young wore thin layers of clothes. I don’t know if it actually has a better effect on keeping you warm, but wearing many thin clothes feels less cold than wearing one thick one. Cha In-young, wearing gray clothes and a gray hat outside, left the base alone and headed to the British excavation site.
Cha In-young moved on a short ski that was only about a meter long. The weather was bad, so visibility was somewhat limited. This was the perfect day to go on a secret reconnaissance mission. On a clear day, British surveillance could not be avoided, and on a cloudy day, reconnaissance was impossible, so Cha In-young could only conduct reconnaissance four times in three months.
‘At the rate of progress, it looks like we’ll be able to unearth the dragon’s corpse within a few days.’
Cha In-young checked the device hanging around her neck once more. The captain had assured her that it would work at temperatures up to -100 degrees Celsius, but she was still worried because she had witnessed electronic devices breaking down in the cold several times. This device, which was a game console, had secured a video recording function by adding a core to it by Choi Se-gil, who was proud to be one of the world’s top three hackers.
The area cannot be monitored by satellite to see what Britain is doing. Since Britain had announced in advance that it would use the latest cold-resistant materials and new construction techniques in the construction of this Antarctic base, most countries did not have much doubt about Britain’s actions.
When they were about ten kilometers from the excavation site, Cha In-young folded up her skis and put them in her backpack. Cha In-young moved to the most inconvenient location to observe the excavation site, turned on the camera function, and stopped moving. Safety first is Cha In-young’s motto. If it weren’t for the compensation promised by the team leader, she wouldn’t have participated in such a dangerous task.
After about ten minutes, the game console’s camera function turned off, so I had to replace the battery. The game console itself was made of new materials that made it work in cold temperatures, but Choi Se-gil didn’t even think about the battery. That’s why I had to change the battery while filming.
As cheers were heard at the excavation site, Cha In-young’s hands became more anxious. It is not easy to change a small battery while wearing thick gloves. However, if you take off your gloves even for a moment, something big could happen, so you have to change the battery while wearing gloves.
Cha In-young, who started filming again, looked at the excavation site with strained eyes. Seeing the British excavation team clapping each other’s hands in joy, it seemed like the excavation had made great progress.
A considerable number of ropes were lowered, probably to break the ice and pull up the dragon’s corpse. Cha In-young suppressed the urge to move a little and get a better position. It is not the attitude of a soldier to take risks by coveting the ball.
The cranes rumbled and lifted something heavy. Looking at the large ice block that had been lifted, Cha In-young realized that her thoughts were wrong. The excavation team pulled out the dragon’s body with the ice block intact. Perhaps from now on, people, not machines, would remove the ice themselves.
Cha In-young slowly moved backwards while filming. It is not yet known whether she will break the ice here or move to another place entirely. So, she needs to maintain a sufficient distance to safely react to any choice of her opponent.
Something in the shape of a dragon was clearly visible within the ice block. When the sunlight shone through it, it looked white, and when the sun hid behind the clouds, it seemed like ice within ice. Cha In-young wondered if, just as one becomes a fossil when buried in the ground, one becomes ice when buried within ice.
There was a brief exchange of shouts, and then several people began taking pictures from various angles with their cameras. Then, several cameras began taking multi-angle video. Those with drills and hammers in their hands began to very carefully break the ice.
Cha In-young, who was changing the battery once again, felt someone was looking at her and cautiously looked around. Cha In-young confirmed that all the British excavation team’s sentries were focused on the people breaking the ice, finished changing the battery, and resumed filming. Cha In-young’s body flinched as she checked if the filming was working properly on the screen that was less than half the size of her palm.
It was a meeting of eyes with a creature that was presumed to be a dragon trapped in ice. Cha In-young raised her head very carefully, and her body froze. The sense of intimidation was completely different from what she felt when she saw it through a small screen. Cha In-young had infiltrated the presidential palace in Pyongyang alone, so she was not afraid of anything in the world, but just meeting eyes made her unable to move.
‘Why is this happening to me when everyone else nearby is breaking the ice? Is it because he wants to get out of the ice and is leaving the people who help him alone?’
She wanted to shout at them not to break the ice and that the dragon was alive, but Cha In-young couldn’t move an inch. The dragon’s eyes were moving around, but no one from the British excavation team was able to find it. Cha In-young was frustrated as she kept taking pictures here and there, wondering why they couldn’t find it.
The battery ran out and the camera stopped working. Cha In-young couldn’t move at all and could only watch with her eyes open as the ice that had trapped the dragon began to crumble. As the ice became thinner, the dragon’s body began to appear more clearly. Cha In-young could even clearly see the dragon’s whiskers swaying.
Originally, it was so easy to break ice that in less than two hours, almost all of the large ice was removed. The British excavation team was as obsessed with hammering as if they were possessed by something, and those watching from the side shrugged their shoulders and couldn’t contain their excitement. Although Cha In-young felt something strange, there was nothing she could do.
The sound of the crash reached Cha In-young’s ears, who was three hundred meters away. The dragon that emerged from the ice raised its head and looked around, but the British excavation team clapped their hands together in joy as if they had not seen anything. In the photo, it looked like there were no horns, but there was a straight, vague horn growing in the middle of the forehead.
The dragon, with its head erected, spat out a round bead from its mouth. The bead flew straight towards Cha In-young.
‘Go. Lead me to the person I am destined to meet.’
Cha In-young quickly disassembled the game console. Even changing the battery was difficult because he was wearing thick gloves, but he quickly and accurately completed the more difficult task of disassembling the game console. Cha In-young took out the game console’s CPU and put a round ball in its place, reassembled the game console, and immediately went skiing to the South Pole base in Korea.
‘Move faster. I can’t hold out for much longer.’
A voice that was indistinguishable from a request or an order rang in Cha In-young’s head. Cha In-young used all her strength to speed up. After a few minutes, a loud noise rang out from behind her, and a spine-chilling energy shot up into the sky. Cha In-young, who had been running frantically, finally came to her senses. When her legs suddenly stopped moving, she rolled down onto the snow.
At the excavation site, white powder was rising into the air. Cha In-young, who felt that if the powder came back down to the ground, it would be a disaster, stopped thinking and ran again toward the Antarctic base. However, before she could even run ten kilometers, the cold air that spread widely from the sky came down to the ground, and she stopped running.
He was frozen in place.
### I am the depressing dividing line ###
– The latest news. A sudden cold wave in Antarctica has claimed hundreds of lives. Among them are about a dozen people from the South Korean Antarctic Temporary Observation Station, which is very sad.
– The UK, which had announced that it was building a new base, has been shocked by the revelation that it was not building a base but rather excavating something huge. Despite questions from Korea and other countries around the world, the UK government is keeping quiet about its excavation goals.
– All living things within a hundred kilometers died simultaneously from the sudden cold wave. Their clocks stopped at 8:35 a.m. on April 13, 2012, Korean time. I would like to take this opportunity to express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families.
– The remains of the victims of the Antarctic base arrived in Korea today, the 23rd. Those who suffered in the extreme cold of Antarctica, far away from their families for the sake of their country, can now rest in the warm embrace of their country and families. The place where the remains and belongings were handed over was filled with the cries and tears of the bereaved families and officials. We will connect you to the scene right away.
### I am the depressing dividing line ###
Cha In-young’s wife, Park Geum-nan, joined a secondhand market cafe. She wanted to sell her husband’s game console to help with her household expenses. Her son said the game console didn’t work, but she thought she could get about 100,000 won for it since it cost money for the materials.
However, the game console priced at 100,000 won only drew ridicule from people.
– This is fake. VR game consoles have only just come out and cost at least a million won.
– They say it’s broken, but the repair cost is likely to exceed several hundred thousand won. It’d be better to just buy a new one.
– In fact, this is expensive because of the technology development cost, and the material cost is less than ten thousand won.
As I was looking through the comments section, I heard a notification that a message had arrived. When I clicked on the message, I saw that there was someone who had expressed interest in purchasing.
– Hello. I saw you for sale as a used game console while I was looking for one, so I contacted you. I will pay you the full price of the game console materials. When can we trade? I will leave my phone number, so please contact me at this number.
Park Geum-nan immediately made a phone call and set a time and place. Following the advice of her friend, she decided to meet at a place near the police station. A young man with a good impression was waiting for her at the place where she went out with the game console.
“Hello. I’m attending S University and have a double major in materials engineering, so I can confirm what materials the game consoles are made of. I’ll check and give you the right price.”
The young man asked for Park Geum-nan’s understanding and disassembled the game console. After checking everything, the young man opened his mouth with an embarrassed expression.
“The cost of the materials alone is well over a million won. Considering that it’s used, could you sell it to me for a million won?”
Park Geum-nan answered urgently.
“I was thinking of something like a hundred thousand won, but if it’s a million won, I’d be grateful.”
“I don’t have much cash with me, so I’ll go to a nearby ATM and transfer it to you. Giving you cash could be risky.”
The young man took Park Geum-nan to the bank and transferred one million won. After confirming that the money had been properly deposited, he left with the game console. Park Geum-nan was dumbfounded when the money sold for ten times more than she had expected.
“I met a noble person, I met a noble person.”
Amount: 1 million won, depositor: Ki-shin. Park Geum-nan vowed not to forget the name of this precious young man. At that moment, Ki-shin, who was walking to the dormitory, scratched his head.
“I was only going to give you about 300,000 won, but I ended up saying 1 million won without realizing it. I guess my conscience hasn’t been shaken off yet.”
