God, to England
After easily obtaining a C-level license, Kishin had to wait a year before he could challenge for a B-level license with an instructor’s recommendation. While studying for the coaching license, Kishin became even more interested in soccer, and on weekends, he searched for soccer game videos and videos of famous foreign coaches and retired players analyzing tactics on the Internet.
Meanwhile, Choi Young-ho, a close friend who has been living in China for several years, asked to borrow money over an international phone call. Young-ho, who lost both parents and was raised by his uncle, and Gi-shin, who grew up with his stepmother and lived alone with his father after his parents divorced, have been close friends who have relied on each other since childhood.
He earned 500 million won from the project bonus and a bank loan and sent it to his friend. Because his pockets were so tight, Kishin had a hard time refusing blind dates from his seniors. He thought he would be a burden if he showed his poor appearance to the woman who introduced him as a promising junior at a large company.
Time passed quickly after that. The project led by Manager Jang proceeded smoothly as planned without any obstacles, and Ki-shin’s company life also went smoothly and quickly.
Even in the qualification exam, Director Kim’s power was beyond Kishin’s imagination. Even though it was a request from over a year ago, the other party did not forget and took care of Kishin’s convenience. When he said that he was thinking of challenging for an A-level qualification after obtaining a B-level qualification, an association official arranged for Kishin to be an elementary school supervisor. Since he was a company employee, he could only participate on weekends, but when he said that he would work without pay, the school readily agreed.
Then, last year, a large sum of money was deposited into the Chinese bank account that had been set up to send money to Young-ho. I was surprised and called Young-ho, and he said that Ki-shin had registered as an investor and a third party shareholder with a 15% stake. Young-ho had a 30% stake and a relative of a high-ranking Chinese official had a 55% stake.
“It may seem like a loss to give 55% to someone who just plays around and eats, but without that person, our business would not be successful. The process that would take a month is finished in a week. And since you’re selected as a tax-exempt entity, you’re exempt from taxes for the first three years, and from the fourth to the tenth year, you’re exempted by half.”
Even after paying off all his loans, he still had money left over. With his pockets full, Kishin looked forward to blind dates with his seniors, but no one set him up on blind dates because he had been rejected so many times that he was known to be a stubborn person. He had no choice but to help out with the elementary school soccer team’s training on the weekends, and at night, he spent his days drinking with his coach, whose forehead was getting colder and colder.
Another year passed and he obtained the A-level license. To obtain the P-level license, he needed 5 years of experience. Kishin, who was contemplating whether or not to challenge the P-level license, began to wonder why he had wanted to obtain the soccer coach license.
‘Yes, it was to fulfill my childhood dream. My dream of going to England and becoming a football manager.’
But suddenly, the house I bought a few months ago caught my attention. I couldn’t understand why someone who was leaving for England would buy a house. I suddenly wondered if I was possessed by a ghost.
‘No, it’s a good thing I bought it at half price because it’s a house that’s being sold in a hurry. If I leave Korea, I can just leave it to the real estate agent, so don’t take it too seriously.’
### I am the cheerful dividing line ###
“Manager Jang, you will become a manager next year. Who do you plan on giving the manager position to?”
“Director, you’re a veteran in terms of ability, but it’s only your fourth year. Even if the year changes, it’ll still be your fifth year, so I think the title of manager is a bit too much. Chang-hyeon is okay in every way, but he’s very soft-spoken. I’m worried that the position will either make or break a person.”
“What kind of person does Manager Ki look like? If Chang-Hyeon becomes the manager, will he harbor any resentment inside?”
“I don’t think so. Usually, the elite course is a department head position every six years. Even if the year changes, it’s only four years, so I don’t think they would have even thought about the department head position. However, I’m worried that Kisin’s ability is so outstanding that Chang-Hyeon might feel burdened.”
“Manager Jang, take care of this. Even if I leave here, the people who are left behind should be able to hold out well. I won’t call any of you until I go to the electronics and become the president. If I go down, I’ll go down alone.”
After laying a solid foundation for those who believed in him and followed him, Executive Director Kim plans to move to the electronics sector and struggle. In any case, his line is based on ability, so there are few people who are good at politics. The electronics sector is a political arena, so if he takes them along, politicians may find him a weak point.
After saying goodbye to Executive Director Kim, Manager Jang went to a food stall to find Chang-hyeon and Gi-sin and opened a bottle of soju. When the number of empty bottles increased to about six, Manager Jang opened his mouth.
“Chang-Hyeon, and Shin-I, you’ve probably heard the rumors. Next year, I’ll be promoted to manager. I’m worried that one of you two will have to fill the position I’m leaving behind. You’re both my siblings whom I cherish so much, and I don’t want to disappoint anyone.”
“Brother, Shin-i is good at his job and has good abilities, so Shin-i can do it. I have no regrets.”
“No. Hyung Chang-Hyeon has the ability and experience, so of course he should be the manager. I’m still young. How can I be the manager when I’m not even thirty?”
Manager Jang and Chang-hyeon gaped. Now that they looked at him, Gi-shin was still in his twenties. When they saw him working all night for three days at a time, they should have realized that he was a young and fresh guy, but because his abilities were outstanding, they forgot his age.
“And I plan to quit my job around the end of the year and pursue my dream. I think it’s right for my brother to become a manager and lead the department well.”
“I don’t know what your dream is, but if you keep going like this, you could even become an executive director. If you become a manager this time, you could become a manager in your mid-thirties, and an executive director in your forties. If you continue to do well at your current job, you might even be able to become president. Is that a dream so desperate that you’d throw away a guaranteed future?”
Manager Jang’s eyes were completely clear of alcohol. He himself had considered quitting his job and starting his own business before becoming a manager. The person who saved him at that time was Managing Director Kim. Looking back now, it was a very good decision to stay. Managing Director became Executive Director, and he, who was a deputy manager, will become a manager next year.
The color of his face, which had turned pale after drinking Gishin’s alcohol, instantly turned red. The alcohol had overcome his embarrassment. Gishin mustered up his courage and answered, repeating to himself that he was not ashamed.
“I want to go to England and become a soccer manager.”
A quiet stillness lingered. Silence originally meant quiet, but I don’t know why it was quiet stillness. Strange thoughts were running wild in my head, tormenting me. It felt like the alcohol had suddenly hit my head.
“Wow, cool guy!”
The small exclamation that Chang-hyeon let out broke the silence. Thinking that it was not a quiet stillness, but a quiet silence, Ki-shin rubbed his face with both hands. He felt the effects of the alcohol starting to wear off a little. He couldn’t tell if he was drunk or if he was just dazed from embarrassment.
“Are you sure?”
Ki-shin answered Manager Jang’s short question hesitantly.
“I’ve now obtained an A-level qualification. I need five years of experience to obtain a P-level qualification. First, I need to go to England to obtain that qualification and gain experience by becoming a manager of a lower league team. My friend’s business in China is very successful and I’m receiving dividends. I don’t have to worry about making a living. I’m still young, so even if I fail, I can easily find other things to do. It’s something I like and it’s been my dream since I was young, so I think I’ll be happy regardless of the results.”
Manager Jang took a sip of soju. It might have been a good thing. I don’t know about Director Kim, but Ki-shin’s abilities are too great for him to take care of. He felt relieved, but at the same time, he felt like trash. He was worried that Ki-shin would be a threat to him, so he thought of Chang-hyun as his successor. As a father of two children, he seemed to be becoming more and more cowardly rather than stronger.
“Then, Chang-Hyeon, you prepare yourself mentally in advance. And Gi-Shin, you punk, if anyone walks on two legs today, I’ll tear off their peppers. Let’s drink until we die.”
Thanks to Manager Jang, who kept saying sorry while pouring half of the alcohol on his clothes, Chang-hyeon and Gi-sin’s minds became clearer. After finally taking Manager Jang home, who had become unconscious, the two went to a sauna and slept. Gi-sin didn’t want to go into a house where he lived alone, and Chang-hyeon didn’t want to go into a house where his wife lived.
### I am the cheerful dividing line ###
As the end of the year approached, Kishin had a farewell party with the people in his department. He finished his resignation, booked a ticket to England in a few days, and had already found a house to stay in England with Youngho’s help. The house Kishin was worried about was something Youngho was planning to buy from Kishin and give to his uncle as a New Year’s gift.
“Gishin, you’re a good guy. If things don’t work out the way you want them to, come back. There are several clubs in our group. Finding a job for you isn’t a big deal.”
Director Kim must have been drunk for several days, so he got drunk right away after drinking a few beers.
“I’m telling you, I’m a very sharp-eyed person. So far, there’s no one who hasn’t done well in my eyes. You’ll succeed no matter what you do. So go ahead, don’t be discouraged, work hard, and flatten the noses of those nosy bastards.”
Because Director Kim got drunk quickly, the drinking party ended quickly. After the farewell party, Ki-shin did not go home right away but wandered the streets at night. Under the splendid lights, all kinds of people were drunk and revealing themselves without any filter.
“Hey bachelor, come and have your fortune told. If it’s wrong, you won’t get your money.”
The old woman, whose hair was more white than black, gestured to Gisin. As Gisin approached and squatted down, the old woman smiled warmly.
“Tell me your name, date of birth, and time of birth.”
“I was born at 8:12 on May 1, 1988. My name is Kisin.”
“It’s the 16th day of the 3rd lunar month. I feel so energetic.”
My grandmother did some calculations, opening and closing her fingers, then shook her head.
“Your energy is too strong. You were born in the year of Mujin, the month of Byeongjin, the day of Byeongjin, and the hour of Mujin. Since Jin is dragon, there are only four dragons in your fortune. In terms of the five elements, there are only earth and fire. You are destined to bring misfortune to those around you, but strangely enough, that changed a few years ago. You have become a fortune that brings blessings to those around you.”
Kisin took out a 50,000 won note and handed it to his grandmother. He lost his mother right after he was born, and because of that, he even remembers the time of his birth. Later, his father divorced his stepmother, and Youngho, who was close to Kisin, lost his parents in a car accident. In order to pay for Kisin’s college tuition, his father went on an ocean-going fishing boat, and after that, they only occasionally contacted each other by letter. And that stopped after he graduated from college.
But after getting a job, everything went smoothly. Director Kim became an executive director, Manager Jang will soon become a manager, and Chang-hyeon will become a manager. Young-ho succeeded in business in China and is still expanding the scale.
What changed his fate? Was it a job or meeting a benefactor at work? While worrying about various things, Kishin suddenly remembered the game console. The game console that had no CPU information and only showed 1 TB of memory. The game console that he had completely forgotten about after downloading a single game. Kishin called a taxi and headed home, found the game console, and turned it on.
