Asian director
Roman is part of the Notts County board. He is also a relative of the club owner, so his power is much greater than that of other board members. The new season is about to start in a week, but the manager suddenly resigned. The club could not stop him because of health issues.
“Two of them have already signed contracts with other clubs. They contacted our club as a ploy to increase their value.”
Kishin went to the club directly because he thought it was a coaching interview. However, other managers met with their agents at a hotel and negotiated. Naturally, they were exposed to the media, and two of them signed contracts with other clubs within a few days. They used Notts County for their negotiations.
“One of the remaining people, when I contacted him in the morning, said he was hospitalized after a car accident. He had a mild concussion from a head injury, but since he is a person who takes care of his body, he declined the contract offer, saying that he would need to rest for about half a year.”
“One of them was caught involved in a violent incident several years ago and will be sentenced to three months in prison upon entering the UK. It is very likely that he will never set foot on British soil again.”
“Coach Marker is aware of our situation and is demanding three times the amount we were negotiating. It seems like his agent is pushing him behind the scenes. He’s someone who has done whatever the coach tells him to do without thinking since his days as a player.”
The marker is the so-called executioner on the grass. The problem is that the player is used to limit the opposing team’s outstanding players, and the means of doing so are mainly fouls and threatening tackles. However, from the manager’s perspective, there is no regret at all in giving up a spot for the marker who follows orders without question.
In another country, he would have been heavily criticized and retired at a young age, but in England, he was evaluated as a manly man and played in the second and third divisions for over ten years, and even obtained a manager’s license after retirement. Since the tactical part can be handled by a tactical coach, a marker with a lot of fighting spirit is not a bad condition.
Just as some managers have used Notts County in negotiations, Notts County also tried to gain an upper hand in negotiations with Manager Marker by contacting several managers and leaking the news. So the club planned to offer half of the amount they were thinking of and gradually increase it, but Marker’s agent heard the news and did not fall for that amount, and instead demanded a three-fold increase.
“Aren’t there any other candidates? They don’t necessarily have to be a good fit for our team. I’m just saying, aren’t there any other coaches at a level that can put pressure on Marker?”
The club staff were dumbfounded by Roman’s words. If the manager is too high-level, even the marker can tell that he is bluffing, so he must be a manager of an appropriate level. However, it is difficult to find managers who can be brought to the negotiating table with Notts County’s ability in the short term.
“Okay. We have to negotiate well with Marker to prove that we are not salary swindlers. The upper limit is twice the amount previously proposed. Even if we make concessions in autonomy or other provisions, we must never make concessions in the amount.”
If you give too much money to a novice like Marker, the coaches will be dissatisfied. To match that, the coaches’ salaries must also be raised. Then, the salaries of the club staff will inevitably increase. If a manager with recognized ability other than Marker is paid a lot of money, it is possible for veteran coaches to be dissatisfied.
A few hours later, Roman’s face became a ticking time bomb, meaning it was about to explode. Not only did Marker refuse to compromise on his salary, he also demanded that the entire coaching staff be sacked and reorganized according to his will. Notts County’s coaching staff are all former Notts County players and are very loyal to the club.
They have a lot of support from fans and are on good terms with the players. Most of the coaches are so talented that Notts County would feel sorry for them, so I don’t think the club would be able to handle the aftermath if they were to fire even one of them.
“Damn, I’d rather have a scarecrow with a manager’s license run the team as a coaching staff.”
Although they are excellent in ability, the coaching staff of Notts County is not without problems. They have been divided into two factions and have been fighting for several years, so despite their excellent ability, Notts County is considered one of the candidates for relegation every year. Of course, they are ranked between 10th and 20th every year without much fluctuation.
‘If the coaches can unite and recruit a few good players, the third division will be no problem.’
Roman is the most powerful person in the management, but he works on the lowest salary. If it is not illegal to not receive a salary, he may not have received any money at all. Roman has loved Notts County, officially recognized as the oldest club in the world, since he was young.
“Contact the director who was in the car accident. Tell him that it’s okay to take a break for half a year with just his name on it.”
I called several times after a while, but the person on the other end didn’t answer. Then, the employee who had been scolded by Roman a few days ago opened his mouth hesitantly.
“Hey, that Asian guy with the A-class last time.”
Roman jumped up and grabbed the employee’s hands. Roman laughed heartily as he saw the employee’s body flinch.
“I don’t remember ever laying a hand on you, even though I’m a bit harsh with my words. By the way, I guess I’ll buy you a meal tonight. You saved our team.”
The staff straightened up again at Roman’s praise. Roman, who earns 300 pounds a week, is respected by all the staff at Notts County. Since Roman comes from a wealthy family, there is not a single staff member who thinks that he deserves less money.
Roman, who is the most talented player in Notts County and always sacrifices for the club, is not someone that all the staff like, but he is respected by all the staff. He got a lot of criticism that day because of his mistake, but he was more upset about the fact that he let Roman down than the fact that he got criticized, so Roman’s praise completely washed away his disappointment.
“What was the atmosphere of our interview that day?”
“It wasn’t bad. The person had been working for a famous mobile phone company for several years. Maybe that’s why he answered my rude questions very politely.”
Roman recalled whether he had spoken harshly that day. However, no matter how much he thought about it, he didn’t think he had asked a question that would have made the other person feel bad. Of course, from the perspective of everyone else except Roman, Roman was the perpetrator that day.
“Contact me right now and let’s negotiate a contract. Let’s make it around 800 pounds a week. If that doesn’t work out, we can make it 1,000 and deduct 200 from my weekly salary every week.”
### I am a strange dividing line ###
It’s been a few days since the interview and I haven’t heard from them. And there’s no response from other clubs either. I could consider coaching a school team instead of a professional team, but school teams are more racist than professional teams. What if I work for an amateur team without pay?
They say there are more jobs, including youth coaching positions, in Portugal, Belgium, or the Netherlands. However, since becoming a coach in England was my childhood dream, I could only decide to leave England when all other paths were blocked.
The number on the phone screen was a number he had never seen before, but Kishin answered it without hesitation. Kishin, who had hoped for a new interview opportunity, almost screamed when he picked up the phone. The club he had interviewed with a few days ago called to negotiate a contract.
“Hey, little one from the East. Where are you going to beg today?”
The old man never gets tired and keeps picking on Gisin whenever he goes out. Sometimes when I go out and don’t listen to him, I feel like I’ve left something important at home. Gisin answered with a refreshing smile.
“Good afternoon. The weather is really nice.”
The old man opened his mouth and was speechless, perhaps because the god’s answer was unexpected. Then, as if he had made a big decision, he focused his eyes and spoke to the god.
“I hate Asians.”
“Thank goodness, you’re like me.”
“You’re Asian. Why do you hate Asians?”
“Just. I don’t need a reason to hate it. Like you.”
“There is no reason. Don’t you know how rude and barbaric Orientals are?”
“Well, I’m thirty now. I haven’t met all the billions of Asians, so I don’t know how rude and barbaric they are.”
“Huh, I can tell just by looking at a few. Do I really have to meet them all?”
“I see. Looking at you, all British people must be racist. And every day, when they have nothing better to do, they pick fights with strangers. As globalization progresses, racism is gradually disappearing in developed countries, but it seems that Britain is still an underdeveloped country.”
“You dare to frame me?”
“I’m in a good mood today, so I’ll treat you this well. Even among Asians, there are those who view Westerners as barbaric and inferior races. I hate those people too. Trash like you who hate people because of their skin color or region are even more disgusting.”
At first I ignored the old man who was picking on me, but later I tried to reason with him. Then, today, I finally realized that this is England, and there is no need to hold back your words and pretend to be humble and kind like in Korea.
Kishin caught a taxi and headed to the meeting place. Since it would be disadvantageous for Kishin to go to the club to negotiate since he was playing an away game, he chose a coffee shop that everyone would know as the negotiation place. There was an interviewer and a club employee there.
Roman felt that the temperament of the person had changed a few days ago during the negotiation. Roman did not know much about Asians. He had only heard that they were very introverted and considered modesty a virtue. He had felt the same way during the interview a few days ago. He did not try to exaggerate his abilities and gave vague answers to his questions instead of giving definite answers.
But the Kishin I met today was unstoppable. He went over each and every item of the contract and asked for full authority over recruiting players. Roman set a condition that it was within the club’s budget and that releasing or transferring players had to be approved by the club.
On his way back after concluding the two-year contract, Roman revised his evaluation of Gishin a lot. He worked for a famous company that makes mobile phones for several years, so he doesn’t seem like an ordinary person. His passion for giving up a stable life and moving to England to pursue his dream was also impressive.
“Roman, I have a really good feeling about this director.”
“So, did you make the person who came for the coach interview do the manager interview?”
“During the negotiations, we discussed each of the other clauses, but we didn’t say anything about the £600-a-week salary. He is a man with a dream. He said he didn’t come to our club to make money, but to pursue his dream.”
Other clauses were reviewed strictly, but there was not a single word about the salary. Perhaps because he had already signed the contract and become the club’s manager, Roman also felt a growing fondness for Gisin.
“Contact Cham. A mysterious manager from Notts County East has signed. Tell him to publish the article immediately. He is young and enterprising and has dreamed of becoming a manager in England since he was a child.”
Kishin, who arrived home with a refreshing mind holding a copy of the contract, was greeted by two police officers with contrasting skin colors, one black and one white. The two presented their police IDs and said they had responded to a report of elder abuse and asked Kishin to cooperate with the investigation.
