Episode 89. The Difficulty of Governing 2
Although it is used casually in modern times, the calendar is really important.
It is not simply an object to mark anniversaries. The most important role of a calendar, then and now, is to tell us when to farm.
The flow of time is cyclical, and plans can be made according to this cyclical flow.
Knowing what happened in the past and knowing what kind of days will come in the future.
So you can prepare for it.
This calendar came into existence on Earth much earlier than 3,000 years ago. Agriculture creates surplus products, surplus products create calendars, and calendars create greater agricultural productivity.
On Earth, anyone could make a calendar by simply looking at the sky and knowing that celestial bodies move periodically. So, out of the blue, calendars that were almost up to date often appeared in places that had no contact with other civilizations.
However, we know that the movement of those celestial bodies is periodic.
Also, calculating the movements of celestial bodies and calculating the date based on those calculations.
This is difficult, especially since the world was not created to fit the calendar, but the world was already there and people made the calendar according to their needs.
(As a side note, when I explain here, the years ago and years later are based on this world’s calendar, not Earth’s Gregorian calendar. Fortunately, the flow of time is roughly similar here, so there isn’t much difference in historical time.)
By the way, in fact, there was a calendar in this world too.
To be exact, it was already there at the time of the Reconstruction. The Tocha tribe made it first in the world (this is not a distortion of history), then Erin, and then Baekhan.
In other words, the development of the Datang calendar was really, really slow… … . The main reasons are as follows.
First, lack of necessity.
They hardly do any farming. When the natural environment is out of order, they just adjust the natural environment with spirit magic. In the case of Datang farming, there is no need to sow and harvest seeds sharply according to the date. They just sow with a sense and adjust the environment.
Second, the climate is almost constant.
There is only a dry season and a rainy season. This is especially true in the central part of Datang, called Dator. A rainy season with rain, and a dry season with no rain. There are only two seasons, so what does the timing mean?
Third, the difficulty of making a calendar in this world is ridiculously high, and Datang is even higher.
This part was the real problem.
Datang was truly a cursed nation born with all the bad conditions for making calendars.
Daton was also very interested in celestial bodies, so he had a rough idea of the regularity of their movements and the structure of the world.
“The world is round. We live on the ‘inner’ surface of an incredibly large sphere.”
There was no need to prove this. It was just… … visible. A ship that was clearly moving in a straight line on the shore gradually ‘tilted’ at some point and then rose vertically. This structure was impossible unless the world was round and they were inside that round surface.
And from Dator, Patchar could see the straight horizon at the end of the ‘curved’ Shuzor jungle.
“The world is truly round no matter who looks at it.”
“It feels flat when you go over there.”
“It must be an unimaginably large sphere. Perhaps the earth itself has the power to attract things… … .”
“So the ‘sky’, ‘stars’, and ‘universe’ that we see are actually gathered at the center of a large sphere? What is the principle behind this…?”
I don’t know about that. But there were mathematicians who could roughly calculate the curvature of the visible world and measured distances.
They roughly figure out that the world is a sphere with a diameter of about 12,000 kilometers in Earth units. I don’t know if it’s exactly an ellipse or something, but mathematically it is.
We can roughly estimate that the ‘space’ where the moon rises is at an altitude of about 1250 km. If the altitude of ‘space’ were the same all over the world, the space where celestial bodies reside would be a sphere with a diameter of about 9500 km.
“Oh, is this real?”
“why?”
“No, that’s right. I recently discovered a formula for calculating the volume of a sphere. It seemed like the world we live in was too small and that only the universe was vast, so I plugged it in and found that the volume of the ‘universe’ is roughly half the volume of the ‘world’.”
“oh…….”
It is a discovery that has also received a medal. It is discovered independently all over the world. The law that the volume of the universe and the world are equal, and therefore the radius of the world and the universe contained within it is the cube root of 1:(1/2).
It may be puzzling to Earthlings who are accustomed to the infinite space, but since humans on Earth also live only on the ‘outer surface’ of the Earth, and the space they actually consider ‘heaven’ is no more than a few dozen kilometers, it can be said that their world is similar in size to Earth.
But space is clearly limited. And in that space, there are all kinds of huge suns, moons, and huge stars and satellites moving around, and tiny stars twinkle.
And all of those movements seem to be regular… … maybe! Maybe. The moment I thought that and started making a calendar.
You will accidentally realize that these celestial bodies do not move at a uniform speed.
As I said before, the celestial bodies are transcendent yet crude life forms. The universe and the earth have not yet come into contact, but if they do, there could be other results.
The crescent moon of Dator, which almost reaches the limit of ‘space’. And the red triangular moon that slowly penetrates the ground. The purple cross-shaped moon that rises in Shujor.
These emit celestial magic at creatures on the surface, and sometimes stop to unleash a barrage of celestial magic.
I don’t do constant speed exercise.
On that topic, gravity is used to slightly slow down or speed up the movement of surrounding celestial bodies.
That leads to one conclusion: the celestial calendar is impossible!
“???”
The moment they discovered this fact, all the prehistoric astronomers of Datang lost their minds.
“Well, how on earth do we make calendars if the movements of the celestial bodies that have the greatest influence on weather, dates, and seasons are not regular?”
It is impossible. Ultimately, astronomy in this world ends here.
In particular, in Datang, where the crescent moon is so close that the movements of surrounding celestial bodies are mixed up or even recede, a calendar based on celestial bodies seems impossible.
That was the point where I couldn’t figure out that Erin or Baekhan had a calendar and that they were using it to their advantage.
“How on earth do other races make their calendars?”
After researching, I found that the Erin and Baekkan tribes determine the date by the movement of the red moon.
The Red Moon moves almost exactly at a constant speed with only very slight variations, and the resulting celestial movements can be calculated to make a calendar.
In this era, when the Red Moon had already left the continent of Olsozora and headed east across the sea, this was an impossible method for Daton.
And even Erin and Baekhan’s calendar wasn’t all that accurate.
The Red Moon has a nearly uniform motion, but it hardly reflects the movements of surrounding celestial bodies, so although the date can be known, it is difficult to use it as an accurate forecast of seasonal and weather cycles.
It is a miserable calendar compared to Dator, which had only one crescent moon and the moon itself created the dry and rainy seasons.
“It is said that the Tocha people in the east created a nearly accurate calendar.”
“how?”
“Oh, I don’t know how. But it is true that the farmers knew exactly when to sow and harvest.”
“Find out what it takes, no matter what!”
The land where the Tocha people live is a low-magic zone. In other words, there are not many large celestial bodies in the sky. Even if they are visible, they only emit a small amount of magic power on the ground.
“Hey guys. Do you feel the energy from the ground?”
“Oh. I feel it too.”
“It’s like the energy of the sky (celestial magic)… … The energy of the sky flows even on the ground.”
“oh…….”
“And it seems to pulsate at a regular cycle.”
“Then, if we just find out that regular cycle, wouldn’t we be able to know the cycle of magic and date almost exactly?”
It wasn’t completed in a short period of time. It took 2000 years because it relied on individual ability, sense, and mystery rather than precise observation equipment.
However, the Tocha people had already perfected a nearly accurate calendar by the time the western humans entered the period of struggle.
“A year has 344 days, but there are leap years and leap months, so it comes to a cycle of 6921 days in approximately 19 years!”
“If you look at the sky and connect with the movements of celestial bodies, you might be able to know the weather and crop yields for that year.”
“I promulgate this in the name of the Emperor. See this and farm accordingly.”
Calendar production efficiency increased by 200 times.
Oh, well, 200x isn’t really the case.
When the Datons of the West, Erin Baekan, are suffering from the damned celestial magics that are pouring down on the super high magic to normal magic zone, they just look at the ground and the sky and check the astronomy, geography, and feng shui, and the calendar for that year comes out in a snap.
Naturally, mathematics also developed, and methods for concentrating the insufficient celestial magic, utilizing the energy of the earth, and connecting it with ancestral spirits, etc., despite it being a low-magic zone, they independently developed civilization by squeezing out as many mysteries as possible that could be used in the low-magic zone.
This method spread widely in the East, and in each region, such as Baekan, Iyakan, and Tocha, the method of making their own calendars was widely spread.
And after thousands of years, we finally arrive at Datang.
Still, I can’t make a calendar.
Diman Chaun takes a look at the translated calendar.
“… … ?”
And then I put my hand on the ground once.
“… … ?”
And then look at the calendar again.
“???”
I’m starting to panic.
“What is that celestial magic flowing through the ground? How do you feel it?”
200 times the concentration of celestial magic power in the atmosphere.
Oh well. It’s not actually 200x. That’s an exaggeration.
But it didn’t feel any different. How dare Daton feel the energy flowing through the ground in the high-powered zone? At least in the modern era, it’s a measurement method that’s possible.
The super-super-super-super-high magical power radiating from Dator eventually breaks down into normal magical power and seeps into the land, eventually eroding it and distorting the flow of celestial magical power flowing through the land.
Furthermore, the flow of celestial magic flowing through the land becomes distorted, then stabilizes and is absorbed into the great flow flowing across the entire continent.
And it completely buries the celestial magical energy flowing underground, making it impossible for humans to detect it with precision.
“‘The land with high magical power concentration naturally emits magical power from underground into the air, causing strange phenomena in the surrounding area, so it is easy to detect the veins.’ Does that make sense? How high is the magical power concentration in the air? The magical power pressure comes from the sky and goes into the ground, not the other way around!”
But the book didn’t lie. In the low-magic zone of the Tocha tribe, magic really flows from the ground to the sky.
Diman Chaun despaired. In fact, he did not despair because there was no way. He despaired because he knew the right way and it was nonsense.
So I wanted to borrow some of the work of the pioneers who have already discovered it, but it doesn’t help.
Now there is only one way left.
“Oh please. Heaven.”
All we have to do is record the movements of all the major celestial bodies in the sky, and then measure their gravitational pull and orbits in as much detail as possible to construct a map of the universe itself.
And then you have to construct a map of the universe and then read it and issue a new calendar at regular intervals.
“Do I really have to do this crazy thing?”
It’s okay. I’ll live a long time. I have about 150 years left until I die, so if I spend those 150 years looking up at the sky, I’ll be able to get by.
Or you can continue to do it for generations. Everyone has done it that way. Even if it’s not the case now, maybe in a few dozen generations… … . It might be a little different, right?
She tries to control and manage her time.
Her greatest enemy was time itself.
Diman Chaun looks up at the sky as if in a trance.
As if then I would know something, as if a rice cake would come out of it.
It’s a very convenient, lazy discipline that you can just study for a long time.
