Genius Manager Who Hears Voices - Chapter 9

Episode 9
An hour later, the dining table at Yoo Joo-yeon’s house was piled high with delivery food.
We ordered from four different places, including Korean food, Japanese food, and various late-night snacks.
Hee-sung opened his mouth slightly and said while looking at Yoo Joo-yeon, who was drooling while taking off the packaging of chicken feet.
“I think you clearly told me not to overeat.”
“Ugh! I can’t help it today. This is why I don’t want to cook or eat anything at home.”
Yoo Joo-yeon looked determinedly at the table filled with carbonated drinks and side dishes and handed Hee-sung a pair of wooden chopsticks.
“I’m the type of person who relieves stress by eating. After eating like crazy, I feel so much better as if nothing had happened. Phew, that’s why I try to avoid getting stressed out as much as possible.”
“I guess you usually get stressed out a lot?”
“No, it’s more like I explode once in a while. But every time I do, I end up binge eating and then I feel so regretful. If I do that while filming, I won’t be able to handle it the next day. That’s why I told Hee-sung that I won’t eat too much.”
Today, as if the weather was so bad that she didn’t want to think about the aftermath, Yoo Ju-yeon broke her chopsticks in two and squinted her eyes.
“I have an afternoon shoot tomorrow anyway, and I’m too hot today, so I can’t do it! Since Heesung is here today, I’ll be able to adjust my portions accordingly. Even if I eat a lot, it’ll just be half and half, right?”
“… …Half and half? I don’t think even two people can eat half of this.”
“Hey, what’s a man doing! I heard Heesung-ssi starved all day today too. You must have used up a lot of energy because of me, so eat a lot, a lot. If only I hadn’t been late, I could have fed you something much more expensive and delicious!”
I don’t know if it was to feed him or to eat him, but Heeseong broke his chopsticks anyway.
That’s because the only thing I had eaten all day was soy milk on my way to work in the morning, so I was incredibly hungry.
“CEO Jang Dong-gyu, that person is a truly bad person. He should be completely wiped out of this world. I saw all sorts of dirty things while I was at Licore, for 8 years.”
Hee-sung continued eating and asked about Yoo Joo-yeon’s story, which was told first with a completely different tone.
“But you renewed your contract once, so why didn’t you come out sooner?”
“Back then, I wasn’t like I am now. When I was a rookie, I just did whatever I was told, without knowing if it was good or bad. Then at some point, I realized that if I continued to go with this person, I might end up crossing a river from which there was no return.”
With her gaze fixed on the table, Yoo Joo-yeon continued talking about her bad relationship with him.
“I’ve been called here and there a lot since I was a rookie. It’s not just me, but other actresses too. That guy, CEO Jang, is pursuing various other octopus-like businesses in addition to the entertainment business.”
“Oh, so that’s how that picture was taken.”
“Yes. Besides that, I also accompanied her to business meetings in Macau and Southeast Asia several times. I didn’t think of her as an artist belonging to my company, but as a hostess for investment or business. That’s why there’s no better weapon than an actress.”
It was a shocking story in many ways.
After going through the series of events that happened today, I had a rough idea of what kind of person Jang Dong-gyu was, but I didn’t know it would be this much.
I’ve heard a lot of stories about the entertainment industry over the past two years working at Line Planning, but nothing to this extent.
The expression ‘trash’ is truly not an exaggeration.
“So I just had this thought that I had to succeed as quickly as possible. I thought that if I became more well-known and could raise my voice on my own, I would be able to confidently get out of there. That was exactly what happened when my exclusive contract expired.”
“But I guess you didn’t expect that CEO Jang Dong-gyu would retaliate in this way. Looking at the materials, it seems like he had been preparing for quite some time.”
“Yes. When I brought up the idea of terminating the contract, he readily agreed. He also said that if our relationship was destined to develop and the situation were right, we could meet again. So I never imagined that he would be thinking those thoughts with that smile on his face.”
If Heesung hadn’t heard the voices that suddenly came at that moment, he wouldn’t have been able to take any action about this incident.
Since I don’t know much about the entertainment industry or the work of a manager, it’s impossible to connect that work with Jang Dong-gyu.
Moreover, he would have had no intention of persuading the reporter who received the tip-off email and came to the scene in person.
It was all thanks to that unidentified ability that I was able to make bold decisions and take action even on my first day at work.
“I think it’s a blessing to have found a good agency. After what happened today.”
“Of course. Meeting a good company and meeting a good manager are all blessings and luck. Just like I owe Hee-sung a lot today.”
With those words, Yoo Joo-yeon looked at Hee-seong with changed eyes.
Then he put down the chopsticks he was holding for a moment and asked Heeseong.
“Can I ask you something now? I have a lot to ask Heesung.”
“Um, yes.”
“I asked a question earlier. How did Heesung know that the person who sent that tip-off email was CEO Jang Dong-gyu, and how did he plan to persuade those reporters? I can’t understand it at all with my common sense.”
Yoo Joo-yeon added immediately.
“It may be that Hee-sung didn’t know much about it, but reporters aren’t the type to be easily manipulated. Regardless of what their agency says, if they think it’s a scoop, they’ll unconditionally publish it first. That’s what’s going to make them money and increase their reputation. They’re not the type of people who would back down just because you bring up the code of ethics for journalists.”
Even though she heard it directly from two reporters, Yoo Joo-yeon did not easily believe it.
After living in this world for nearly 10 years, the people I distrusted and feared the most were reporters.
Hee-sung smiled faintly at Yoo Joo-yeon, who was looking straight into his eyes and had a rather serious expression on her face.
“Aren’t all reporters like that? Just as there are good people as well as bad people, there are also good reporters.”
“Be honest with me. Did you happen to know someone there? And you used that connection to persuade the reporters… … .”
Heeseong found himself laughing without even realizing it.
Because Yoo Joo-yeon’s expression as she said those words was so serious, and because the way she seemed so suspicious was also quite funny.
Heeseong opened his lips, lowering the corners of his lips naturally.
“This is my first time working here, so there’s no way I’d be that close with you. But I was wondering why you sent that tip-off email to Berryday Media’s Kang Jin-ha.”
“What does that mean?”
“Broadcasting companies, media companies, and even entertainment media outlets. There must have been hundreds of choices, but I wondered why it had to be the new Berryday Media. So I searched. What kind of company is it? What kind of person is Kang Jin-ha? After doing that, I thought it might actually be an opportunity.”
Yoo Joo-yeon listened silently to Hee-sung’s next words.
Heeseong continued speaking.
“The reporter who broke the most recent big and controversial articles was Chief Kang Jin-ha. That’s probably why I chose him. Looking at his past articles, the reporting process was quite intense. He tried to determine the truth of even the smallest thing, and he clearly distinguished between facts and mere suspicions. That’s why I thought he might be on our side.”
“… … Are you on our side?”
“Yes. To be exact, it wasn’t persuasion, but a suggestion. I thought that someone with that kind of journalistic spirit would be able to figure out what the truth was without having to try to persuade him. I just threw out the three letters of his name, Jang Dong-gyu.”
From the beginning, it was clear who was behind it.
The important thing is to let this happen naturally, without taking the initiative.
To do that, he needed the help of those reporters, so Hee-sung threw them bait to make them focus on Jang Dong-gyu.
In fact, there were various incidents before I left the company, and I have heard of several cases of damage similar to this incident.
It was all made up, but the reporters had no idea that it was Hee-sung’s first day on the job and they believed that he had a special relationship with Yoo Joo-yeon, so it was a worthwhile attempt.
And, Heesung was able to get the results he wanted.
As Heesung thought, it was possible because they were real reporters and not rags.
“… … How could Mr. Heesung believe that I had nothing to do with that? He didn’t know anything about me.”
Heeseong answered Yoo Jooyeon’s question with a gentle smile.
“Because I’m your manager. As Yoo Joo-yeon said, a celebrity and their manager are like one body. So it was only natural.”
It was quite a spectacular day for my first day as a manager.
A day that I was able to finish thanks to luck rather than experience or ability.
Well, I feel it once again, but it seems like this job is on a completely different level from what I’ve been doing so far.
“… … Whatever it is, thank you, Heesung. I said it would only be a week so there wouldn’t be anything particularly difficult. I’m so sorry and thankful for those words that I feel so bad about it. If it weren’t for Heesung, I really don’t know what would have happened… … .”
If things had gone the way CEO Jang Dong-gyu wanted, it would have been an indelible stain on his acting career.
From the moment the article broke, there would have been an uproar of accusations of ignorance, and even if the truth was later revealed, the damage would never have been fully recovered.
Because for someone who doesn’t care about the truth, even after 10 years, the perception that she is an actress who is obsessed with a cult will still be deeply ingrained.
So, she couldn’t help but feel great gratitude towards Heesung that couldn’t be expressed in words.
“Mr. Heesung.”
Yoo Joo-yeon called Hee-seong with a tired look in her eyes.
Heeseong also looked at her and answered.
“Yes, Mr. Jooyeon.”
“It’s getting late today, do you have any other plans for tomorrow?”
“No. My schedule is based on Jooyeon’s schedule. Anything else besides my schedule… .”
“Then, after filming is over tomorrow, why don’t you go somewhere with me? We only have two scenes to film tomorrow, so I think we’ll be done before dinner.”
“Is this a personal matter? I need to prepare something separately… … .”
Yoo Joo-yeon smiled faintly at Hee-sung’s question.
Then he leaned both arms on the table, made a meaningful expression on his face, and shook his head slightly.
“Nothing, nothing. Just come with your body. Everything else will be ready.”
