Have Magic - Chapter 108

Embrace the Magic (108)
These were the happiest days of Margaret’s life. She had a good employer and was being treated well.
In particular, my son no longer did dangerous work. Nevertheless, he was recognized by his employer and praised every day.
My son was honest by nature. So, when he was working as a miner, everyone, regardless of whether they were superior or subordinate, loved him.
But being a miner was such a dangerous job. Several times a day I had to hold back the urge to tell him to quit.
“I need to make a set of clothes for my son.”
Margaret smiled and prepared to knit. She tried to put the yarn into the needle, but it didn’t go in well.
“ha.”
I failed several times while trying to thread the needle. I sighed.
It was a pity. I was really happy these days, but this happiness didn’t last long. Age was the problem.
Unless you are a special person like a wizard or a swordsman, you start to prepare to end your life when you turn 50. It was the age when you started to lose energy and your body started to break down here and there.
Margaret did the same.
My eyes have been heavy lately. When I wake up in the morning, I have no energy and spend a long time blankly staring.
“it’s a shame.”
It was something Margaret had been saying all along.
Now that my son has settled down, he has found a good employer and all that’s left to do is be happy. It’s too bad that I can’t see that happiness last long.
“Still, I have to be strong. If I can be strong, my son can be strong too.”
These days, Margaret is teaching her son how to cook. She is slowly getting ready to finish it.
Fortunately, my son had a talent for cooking. He also had an excellent sense of taste, so he would often imitate a simple dish after showing it to me two or three times.
“There’s still a lot to teach you.”
dripping!
“Margaret! It’s Rodin.”
“Huh? Boss?”
There was a knock on the door, and the voice of the good employer was heard. Margaret quickly got up, but stumbled for a moment.
“iced coffee.”
For a moment, my head spun and I almost fell over. I managed to keep my balance, but I couldn’t get any strength into my body.
It’s been a few years since I turned 50. It seems like the time for me to finish things will come a little sooner.
“Margaret?”
“I’m going out, sir.”
Margaret barely managed to get the door open. Fortunately, her employer didn’t seem to notice her condition.
“Margaret, were you knitting?”
“No, I was just thinking about it. Come in.”
“Yes. Well, excuse me.”
Rodin read the look of death on Margaret’s face, and he immediately noticed that she was trying to hide it.
Rodin was a 6th circle wizard who was about to reach the 7th circle. Although he was currently wandering due to his mental immaturity, his innate senses had not gone anywhere.
‘There’s nothing I can do about my age.’
Margaret didn’t know it, but Rodin was caring about Margaret without anyone knowing.
I mixed a disease-healing potion made with the vision of the Magic Empire into the drinking water and gave it to her every day. I also came once at night while she was sleeping to use Recovery.
This help won’t extend Margaret’s life, but it will allow her to leave in comfort, with less pain and suffering, until the moment she closes her eyes.
This was the extent of the help Rodin could give Margaret at this point.
“What brings you here, sir?”
“I’d like to get some advice.”
“Advice? What advice would you get from a country bumpkin like me? I don’t even know magic.”
Margaret disparaged herself as a country girl, but Rodin was an even worse slave.
The slave seal was erased so that it wouldn’t be revealed, but if you traced back each and every one of the identification cards, all the information was false to the point that the question, ‘Who the hell are you?’ would come out.
“I came because I needed life experience.”
“Experience? If my meager experience can be of any help, feel free to ask.”
“People need to have goals in order to live. But I don’t have anything I want to achieve before the moment I die. What kind of goals should I set?”
“What’s your goal?”
Margaret didn’t understand the question at the time. At first glance, it seemed like something high-level, but when she thought about it again, it was actually a very simple question.
As far as Margaret knew, the smartest person she knew was her employer, Rodin. It seemed strange that such a great man would be troubled by such a problem.
“Is that a strange question?”
“Sir, is there something you really want to achieve that you want to know why?”
“You have to know that to set that as your goal and run hard. I need a destination to run to.”
Rodin thought that in order to stop his current wandering, he had to know the way. In order to know the way, he had to know where the destination was.
I thought that if I could see the destination at the end and there was a path leading there, I could end my wandering and start running again.
“Boss, how many people in the world set lofty goals and run straight toward them?”
“Except for those who succeed or fail, isn’t it true that everyone is simply running towards their goal? Oh! Maybe not a child.”
“No, sir. There are very few people in the world who have such grand ambitions. Most people just live.”
Margaret found it strange that Rodin asked such a question, but at the same time, she thought it was very Rodin-like.
Most people don’t wonder what other people’s ultimate goals are.
The question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” is not a question about a goal. It is simply a question about a stopover on the way to the final goal.
But Rodin, who was not yet twenty, was looking for a goal to which he could run with all his might. He looked like an adult, but he also seemed immature because he could not find it.
“Just like that?”
“Of course, small goals keep coming up. This morning, I had a goal of ‘I want to make a better meal than yesterday.’ When I had Matthew, I had a goal of ‘I want to raise him in a way that no one else would envy.’ When I got laid off from my job at the restaurant, I had a goal of ‘I want to find a job that pays a lot of money.’”
“Small goals.”
“Yes, I keep setting small goals. But I wasn’t born to raise Matthew well, and I’m not someone who lives to find a job that pays a lot of money.”
People live by continuously creating and achieving small goals rather than big ones, and sometimes giving up.
“Oh! I got ahead of myself.”
“People just live. If we give it meaning, it can make life more wonderful, but wouldn’t it become too difficult?”
“Yeah. I’m going to try to keep my cool life cool.”
“It’s boss-like, but it’s also not boss-like. Don’t rush. The boss has never strayed from the path. If you feel like you’ve stopped now, it means it’s time to look around.”
“Thank you, Margaret. You’ve really, really helped.”
Rodin bowed his head sincerely.
As expected, intelligence and life experience were two separate things. Margaret’s experience and advice resonated deeply with Rodin.
“No. I’m just a country girl talking out of the blue. Listen with one ear and let it go out the other.”
“No, Margaret. Thank you very much.”
Rodin took Margaret’s hand once and held it tightly. Margaret smiled so brightly that her eyes could not see and took his hand back.
* * *
Rodin’s steps were light as he left Margaret’s quarters. He felt as if a great burden had been lifted from his mind.
As we walked through the garden, Larry was still swinging his sword. Sweat was dripping down his body, but he showed no sign of stopping.
“Larry, my legs are a little shaky.”
“Oh! Really? I’ll try again.”
“You! I think you’ve been overdoing it lately. The physical aspect is important for inspection. If you overwork your body, it’s worse than not training at all.”
These days, Larry looks like someone who would get into trouble if he didn’t move his body. It didn’t matter how many people around him tried to stop him. He would come out and swing his sword whenever he had the slightest bit of energy to move, and only when he couldn’t move at all would he fall asleep as if he had passed out.
‘I was no different. I was impatient.’
Margaret gave me a sense of relief. It was a great comfort to hear that I had never strayed from the path.
I was already way ahead of everyone else. It was more important not to get lost than to look for shortcuts.
“Haa, I know that, but I’m still impatient. Bianca seems to be way ahead of me.”
“There’s no need to be impatient. You’re already on the right path. After all, the swordsmanship you’ve learned is a protective swordsmanship. You have to protect Bianca.”
“Yes, bro. I’ll keep that in mind.”
I tried to comfort him like Margaret, but it didn’t work on Larry. Just as each person is different, the method of calming him down also had to be different.
Unfortunately, Rodin didn’t have a knack for persuading Larry. He had to figure it out on his own or hope someone else would.
“I guess I’ll just keep that in mind. Tsk, I’ll go to bed as soon as the sun sets today.”
“Huh? That’s too early……”
Knock knock!
“Is there anyone there?”
Rodin and Larry turned their heads at the sudden sound of an unfamiliar voice coming from the front door.
Matthew was inside and heard the noise and ran out.
Matthew has had a lot going on these days.
She helped her mother in the kitchen and did all the cleaning. Matthew was Bianca’s playmate and doorman. In addition, as Margaret prepared for the end, she was also learning how to cook.
“Who are you?”
“I came from the Cedria Tower. I heard there’s a wizard in this house.”
“Are you a wizard?”
Matthew looked back at Rodin, asking if it was okay for him to open the door.
Rodin pulled his hood down low and nodded slightly, a sign of approval. Only then did Matthew open the front door.
The door opened. About a dozen wizards in sky blue robes appeared through the open door.
“Excuse me. We have come from the Tower of Cedria. I am Holton, a 4th circle wizard, and this is Kendrick, the elder of our tower. Are you the owner of this house?”
“Yes. I am the owner of this house.”
When the other party introduced themselves, Rodin felt very uncomfortable. This was because the one called Elder behind the speaker used a ‘magic circle meter’.
‘What rude people.’
Among magicians, the magic circle meter was a sensitive tool that should not be used carelessly. Even asking permission was considered an act of shame, but the opponent tried to check his circle without asking permission.
Of course, I wasn’t caught as a 6th circle wizard.
Rodin always kept two circles hidden in his normal life. A mere 5th circle wizard could not detect the circle hidden by a 6th circle wizard, no matter what tool he used.
“What’s going on?”
“Holton, get out of the way. I’d rather handle it.”
A four-circle wizard named Holton stepped back, and an old man named Elder Kendrick stepped forward. His face was covered in arrogance.
“I’d like you to tell me what’s going on first.”
“Hahaha, you don’t know how to treat a senior wizard.”
The ‘senior’ that the wizard spoke of did not refer to age or career. It was only the realm. In other words, the number of circles one had was the standard for distinguishing between senior and junior.
Kendrick, a 5th circle wizard, was convinced that his level was higher than Rodin’s.
I had already confirmed it with the magic circle meter, and the other person’s voice sounded very young. With that kind of voice, I thought it couldn’t be more than 5 circles.
“I don’t know about that. I know how to deal with a senile old man who carelessly measures circles.”
“How dare you.”
“How dare you? Do you think that once you become a 5th circle wizard, you don’t have to follow wizard etiquette? I didn’t know that the Cedria Tower was such a place.”
I was thinking of not raising my voice if possible.
Today was a good day, as I got advice from Margaret and felt more relaxed. Since the other person was quite old, I decided to just deal with him and let him go.
But the other person’s attitude went way beyond the line. If you tolerate this kind of treatment from a lower circle wizard, you are not qualified to be a wizard.
I wonder if it’s the monster 8th circle wizard I saw a few months ago.
“this guy!”
“You’d better put that hand away and release the magic you’re gathering. If the old man uses magic, I can’t stand it anymore.”
The old man continued to chant the runes without answering. His voice was too soft to be heard.
However, Rodin figured out what spell the old man was casting through the combination and structure of the magic. It was a 5th circle spell, Fire Storm.
