Have Magic - Chapter 99

Embrace the Magic (99)
I first selected only the runes on the wall that looked like a magic circle and examined them. I skipped the runes I didn’t know and just roughly guessed the identity of the magic circle.
I could vaguely guess what purpose the magic circle was created for.
“It’s a magic that blocks attacks. Both external and internal.”
To carve a magic circle like this across the entire wall, a huge amount of mana stones would have been used. Tens of thousands of high-grade mana stones? Or perhaps hundreds of even higher-grade mana stones.
“It’s hard to see raising defenses to this extent as simply to block enemies.”
This cave was a place built to store something for a long time. That is, the enormous number of defensive spells carved into the walls must have been preparations for fighting not only against enemies but also against the long years ahead.
“There must be a state preservation spell somewhere.”
I don’t know which runes are currently in a state preservation spell, but it makes sense to have state preservation spells.
The books were piled up in this place, almost undamaged, where they must have been abandoned for at least thousands of years. If it weren’t for the preservation magic, they would have worn away and disappeared long ago.
“But why are the books piled up so roughly?”
Compared to the space I had painstakingly created, the management of the books was a mess. Even with the state preservation magic, it was absurd to pile them up like this.
“Hmm. No way?”
Rodin approached the book and closed his eyes. He felt something magical inside the book. It seemed as if at least several artifacts were covering the book.
“You stacked up books to cover up an artifact? That’s even stranger.”
I used my Magic Hand to grab a bunch of books and move them to the side. It seemed like it would take too long with just one, so I created four more Magic Hands and controlled them simultaneously.
I spent a long time picking up a bunch of books and moving them to the side.
Eventually, the floor beneath the books was revealed. Next to the floor were wooden fragments and eight non-book objects.
“I can feel the magic here.”
There were two sets of armor, one sword, one shield, and one spear. These were clearly the weapons and armor that Charis and Jenna would use.
“I’ll give it to you later.”
[It’s okay, Master.]
[Just waiting for orders.]
Charis and Jenna weren’t particularly interested in artifacts. They looked like people, but they were actually dolls. They would take what the Master told them to take, and put it down when the Master told them to put it down.
In addition to the weapons and armor, there was also one bracelet and one necklace.
“Then is this the property of the previous master?”
Eight objects were lying on what appeared to be broken pieces of wood.
Originally, the object was placed on a wooden structure such as a desk or podium, but for some reason, the wooden structure seemed to have broken.
“What is its identity?”
I examined the armor, which was the largest in size. I injected magic into its interior, and was able to read some of the magic right away.
“Strengthening, summoning, refracting, lightening, and shrinking. There are two more spells besides those.”
There were too many unfamiliar runes in the remaining two. There was a limit to just reading the runes back and forth and inferring from the context.
“The two armors are of the same type.”
Both were leather armor. However, they had iron plates to protect vital parts such as the heart and spleen. In the Marquisate of Richmond, such armor sold for half the price of full plate mail.
Of course, I had no intention of selling this armor for that price.
The armor contained a magic circle with many runes that even Rodin did not know. It was absolutely forbidden to sell it, even for research purposes.
Moreover, the functions that were clearly discovered were a priceless treasure.
What if you could figure out features that weren’t even tested? It was worth calling.
“There are runes that even the sword doesn’t know.”
The sword, shield, and spear had magic circles attached to them that meant strengthening, a magic circle that absorbed mana, a magic circle that reduced their size, and several other unknown magic circles.
“We can study it later. All that’s left are the bracelet and the necklace.”
I looked at the bracelet first. The magic circle engraved inside was surprisingly not complicated.
“Space and summoning, storage, calculating different coordinates? That’s nonsense. It’s subspace.”
It was a magic circle of a form I had never seen before. I could figure out its function by reading the runes, but the level was too high. With my current skill level, even if I had the materials, I would have been unable to make it.
“It’s broken. That’s what it was. I was wondering why the book was left like this.”
Originally, all of the enormous amount of books were stored in subspace. Subspace was a space where time did not flow, so there was no need to worry about the books becoming worn or damaged.
But for some reason, something went wrong with the bracelet. The magic circle physically broke, and because of that, all the books stored inside flew out.
“That doesn’t mean the subspace has completely disappeared.”
Rodin put magic into the bracelet and examined it carefully again. He looked at it again and again for hours.
“Here it is.”
After looking at it for a while, I was able to figure out where the problem was. There was a strange foreign substance stuck in the rune that made up the magic circle. Because of that, the rune had become corrupted.
“Can I fix it arbitrarily?”
I worried about it, but the answer was there.
I couldn’t even ask anyone to fix my bracelet right now. I didn’t think anyone would be able to do that.
Above all, in order to carry that huge amount of books, there had to be a subspace. Without a subspace, there was no telling how many years it would take to move all those hundreds of books.
“Charis, can I fix this bracelet as I please?”
[As the Master wills.]
“Jenna, what do you think?”
[If it’s possible, wouldn’t it be good to give it a try?]
Unlike the blunt Charis, Jenna answered like a real person. If you just listened blankly, it was hard to tell that she wasn’t a person.
“Yeah. Jenna, you’re right. I’ll have to try. I’ll just touch one stroke. If I can’t even do that, I’ll have to give up magic.”
I breathed magic into the bracelet and examined it for foreign substances.
It was not a magic circle, but a foreign substance that got in during the process of melting materials to make a bracelet.
It was a foreign substance as small as a speck of dust, but unfortunately, it ended up on the tip of the rune.
This wasn’t something you’d see often. Even if it did happen, it was usually noticed and fixed during the artifact inspection process.
“It’s difficult to remove foreign substances. The best way is to cover them and get rid of them.”
Fixing it like this will cause problems with the lifespan of the artifact. For now, it’s a temporary measure that can’t be helped, but later on, I’ll have to find out the materials and fix it properly.
I slightly melted the part of the body that made up the bracelet where the magic circle was not engraved.
Just as tiny as a speck of dust.
The foreign substance was dragged to the melted location, and the melted liquid was moved to the location where the foreign substance was.
Woohoo!
The bracelet vibrated faintly and then subsided. The subspace magic engraved on the bracelet returned to normal.
“Phew.”
I put the bracelet on my right wrist. I injected some magic power into it and recalled the subspace.
Then, a dark space appeared before my eyes. It was a space that was visible only to the wearer’s eyes.
“Okay.”
All that was left was a necklace. He held it in his left hand, and injected a small amount of magic power into it. The magic circle inside was visible.
“Hmm, this is your storage space.”
Just like the bracelet, the necklace also contained a space magic circle. However, it was different from the subspace.
Subspace is a space where time does not flow inside. You can put battle dolls in it, but that’s it. It has no value other than for storage purposes.
But the space of the necklace was a space where time flowed just like reality.
It also contained a magic circle that linked the senses to its owner, so the battle doll stored inside could see and hear what its owner saw and heard.
“There are other magic circles, too.”
The same magic circle that was on the sword, spear, shield, and armor was also engraved on the inside of the necklace. The problem is that we don’t know what function the magic circle has.
“I don’t know what this is, Jenna.”
[Yes. Just give the order.]
“It’s not an order. I have a question. Do you know what this necklace is?”
[Yes. This is the space where we stay. You can think of it as something like the Master’s house.]
Fortunately, Jenna knew the identity of the necklace. It was clear that the previous owner had used the necklace and the battle doll.
“Does this necklace have any other effects?”
[When we enter the space of the necklace, we can see and hear what the Master sees and hears.]
“also?”
[When it breaks down, it repairs itself.]
As soon as I heard the word ‘repair’, I could tell what function the magic circle had that I didn’t know about. Restoration or repair. It was a function that could return broken parts to their original state.
Swords, spears, shields, and armor also had magic circles with the same function engraved on them. They were artifacts with magic that would automatically restore themselves when the equipment was damaged, just like battle dolls.
“Have you guys ever used that weapon?”
[Yes. It’s the weapon we originally used.]
“What are you holding now?”
[This is the weapon that the previous master gave us after retrieving our equipment before we entered here.]
“Can I check?”
[Of course. Master, just give orders without asking.]
Jenna handed over the weapon she had.
Rodin examined the inside of the weapon Jenna had given him, but it contained no special magic. Even the material of the sword wasn’t all that good.
“Okay. Throw this away and use your original weapon now.”
[Thank you, Master.]
I returned the sword, spear, shield, and armor to Karis and Jenna. The two of them took off their original equipment and put on what they had received from Rodin.
‘There is still one more magic circle in the armor that I don’t know about.’
I decided to find out later. For now, I decided to focus on the equipment.
All that’s left are books.
I decided to postpone the confirmation until later and put the book back in the subspace where it was originally stored.
“It’ll take some time.”
The subspace bracelet was easy to use. After putting a small amount of magical power into the bracelet, if you thought about holding an object with either your left or right hand, you would enter subspace.
But there were just too many books. No matter how simple the process was, putting all tens of thousands of books together was a lot of hard work.
“But I have to put it in anyway.”
I had to pack my books anyways to go home. It was the right choice to pack my books when I had time rather than rushing to pack them later.
“First, my luggage.”
I tried to put the space expansion backpack I brought here into the subspace bracelet. However, the backpack that seemed like it would enter subspace bounced back out.
“Ah! It’s a spatial interference problem.”
The backpack with the ‘space’ expansion magic on the ‘space’ bracelet didn’t fit. The spaces were colliding and pushing each other away.
“Ugh.”
I had no choice but to take out everything in my backpack and put it in the subspace bracelet.
I was able to fit the beef jerky and dried goods Margaret had packed for me, the box containing Proval’s treasure, a considerable amount of money, clothes, and even camping gear into the subspace bracelet.
However, I had to bring the space-expanding backpack and the chef statue that summons the cooking utensils separately.
“Tsk, I made a nice backpack, but I got a subspace bracelet. It just made my luggage heavier.”
I felt a bit bitter for no reason.
I had a similar experience when I was restoring the potion recipe.
After searching through all the books and finally reconstructing the potion recipe, I suddenly came across an ancient vision potion recipe that was even more excellent.
“This time it’s worse than last time.”
He grumbled and grabbed a few books and put them in his subspace bracelet. Seeing Rodin’s actions, Jenna also ran over and picked up the books.
On the other hand, Charis only kept a certain distance from Rodin like an escort, and did not help him by holding the book.
Charis only thought about escorting before receiving an order. To put it badly, he was inflexible, and to put it nicely, he was loyal to his duties.
‘It’s a bit strange for dolls to have personalities.’
I don’t know who made it, but they made Charis and Jenna have different personalities. Rodin found that amusing.
“Phew.”
I held the book tightly and put it in the subspace bracelet. As I kept putting it in, and putting it in again, I saw signs of the book gradually shrinking.
“It does taste like tea.”
After putting away books for a while, I felt empty inside. Come to think of it, I hadn’t eaten a single meal since I came here.
“I’ve been starving for almost 12 hours.”
I took out the cooking statue and summoned the cooking tools. Then I made the dish exactly as I had made it where the door was.
“Charis, Jenna. Are you eating too?”
[I will eat it if you tell me to.]
[You can eat it, but it’s meaningless.]
Battle dolls do not gain energy by eating.
It absorbs mana in its natural state and uses it as an energy source. Naturally, eating is meaningless.
“If you can eat it, does that mean you’ve tried it?”
[Yes. I tried it as a test by order of the previous master.]
“Then what did you do with the food you ate?”
[When no one was looking, I dug up the ground and threw it away.]
I was curious about what kind of person the previous master was. He must have died a long time ago, of course, but I wanted to meet him and have a conversation.
‘Do we have similar personalities?’
I didn’t think it would fit very well. It just felt that way. It seemed a bit pretentious.
The ability to eat was a feature that was of no use in combat. It was an unnecessary feature added to make it look like a human. It didn’t fit with Rodin’s emphasis on efficiency.
“I’ll eat something.”
[Shall we eat too?]
“No. No one’s watching, so. There’s no need to force yourself to eat it.”
Rodin ate the food he had prepared himself. Perhaps because he had been starving for a long time, it tasted better than when he had eaten at the entrance.
