I Became The Crown Prince Of The Mexican Empire - Chapter 148

Episode 148
South and North (2)
‘The United States will free all slaves within the United States by the end of 1846.’
December was fast approaching, and the conflict between the North and the South was growing increasingly intense.
Communication between them was virtually cut off, and they were only busy criticizing each other through the media.
As the time of war ended, the time of division arrived.
“First, we have to revise the constitution among ourselves. They have no intention of talking!”
“···But, you can’t amend it. You need a two-thirds majority in either the Senate or the House of Representatives to propose an amendment to the Constitution. Or, the general assemblies of two-thirds of the states in the United States must request the federal government to convene a national convention to amend the Constitution. You know that.”
This was stated in Article V of the U.S. Constitution. In order to propose a constitutional amendment, one of two things had to be satisfied.
Even more stringent requirements were placed on ratifying the amendment: a proposed constitutional amendment had to be ratified by the legislatures of three-fourths of the states, or approved by a special ratifying convention held in three-fourths of the states.
In short, the argument was that the Constitution could never be amended without the approval of Southern legislators or Southern states.
“This is a situation forced by the Treaty of Pittsburgh. This is an emergency, and extraordinary measures are needed. Wasn’t the Louisiana Purchase, which had unconstitutional elements, ultimately recognized?”
“If we legislate it that way, will they follow? It could actually be a decision that splits the country in two.”
“But if we continue like this until 1847, we will have violated the Treaty of Pittsburgh. Can we afford the aftermath?”
No one knew what it meant to break the armistice that had lasted only a little over a month. What would the Mexican Empire think? There was nothing to say if they started another war on the pretext of non-performance of the treaty.
“···That’s not it.”
The Northern lawmakers didn’t have the confidence to handle it. They were afraid of how the South would react if they took a more aggressive approach, but they had no choice.
“Then, we will hold a vote on the ‘Constitutional Amendment Bill.’”
Many steps were skipped. There were not enough representatives or state legislatures to amend the Constitution. The U.S. Congress was breaking the Constitution with its own hands.
Land-land-land-
“It passed.”
The passed amendments were as follows:
———————
13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution
Section 1: Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
Section 2: The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
———————
It didn’t end there. In the Treaty of Pittsburgh, the Mexican Empire also demanded that “the freedmen enjoy all civil rights, including the freedom of movement,” and that rights be guaranteed accordingly.
The 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which was added to guarantee civil rights for former slaves and their descendants, and the 15th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guaranteed voting rights, were passed in quick succession.
“Oh my God, I don’t know what I’ve done.”
I did it.
No matter how forced it may be, it is an unconstitutional amendment to the Constitution of the United States. The South will never tolerate this.
“We did what we had to do.”
“···Yes. History will be the judge.”
News of the constitutional amendments that took place in New York quickly spread throughout the country. Even citizens in the North considered the constitutions too radical.
of course.
The South would not tolerate it.

The citizens of the South were outraged.
The North’s unilateral and unconstitutional constitutional amendment was a complete disregard for their wishes.
From the North’s perspective, this was an inevitable choice, but ultimately this action brought about tremendous backlash even from states that had remained relatively neutral even during the intense conflict between the North and the South.
“Unconstitutional! Amending the Federal Constitution without the consent of the Southern Congress or the Southern states!”
The Southern giant, Jefferson Davis, argued so.
“Right!”
“From the war with Mexico to the constitutional amendment, if the North decides everything at will, why should we, the South, remain in the Union?”
“Right! Right!”
It wasn’t just his followers who had returned to the great Southern city of New Orleans, but his support was steadfast.
Jefferson Davis was the man who organized the Southern army and recaptured New Orleans.
They were waiting.
Let Jefferson say what he wants.
“The South must secede from the Union which does not respect the rights of the South! We must create a new nation which will defend our rights!”
Jefferson Davis did not disappoint them.
“Wow!”
“you’re right!”
I was sick of those Yankees now.
December 23, 1846.
With overwhelming support from Southern citizens, Jefferson Davis became President of the Confederate States of America.
When he declared independence and founding a new state in Louisiana, which became his political home, the federal government immediately declared them an “anti-state organization,” but this had little effect.
“The plenary session will now vote on the resolution regarding admission to the United States of America.”
The vote took less than three minutes.
“The Legislature of the State of South Carolina has voted formally to secede from the Union and join the Confederate States of America.”
Land-land-land-
The South Carolina legislature unanimously passed a bill to join the Confederacy.
It was not just South Carolina. In slave states, legislators were often, to varying degrees, men of means, and in the South, men of means meant slave plantation owners.
As in every country in the world, the economically wealthy in the South were also actively involved in politics. In Southern society, slave ownership was not just an indicator of economic wealth, but also a symbol of social status and power.
As cotton farming became a boom, the price of slaves soared to the sky. Even the wealthy could not easily afford to buy them. So free all those slaves? Without any compensation? What about the plantations? This was tantamount to threatening to hand over all of one’s property to the state.
All the slave owners thought so, and states like Virginia, Mississippi, and Florida joined the Confederacy one after another.

By 1847, more Southern states were expressing interest in joining the Confederacy. The federal government was becoming increasingly sensitive, and the conflict was escalating.
While many citizens were captivated by this massive confrontation, others were not.
‘James Fork, you son of a bitch.’
“After doing something like that, you want to step back and live comfortably?”
After former President James Polk resigned, public opinion continued to attack him, who had lost all political power.
The accusation was that not only had troops been sent to the South under the pretext of protecting American property, but that their commanders had also competed with each other to provoke border disputes.
James Falk’s apology implied that the accusations were true, and he remained quiet, making no official statement.
“Henry… James… This father will avenge you.”
When the news of the deaths of her two sons in the Battle of Philadelphia spread, the wife collapsed in shock. After waking up, she became ill and died only a month later. The family that had been happy until a year ago was completely destroyed.
His two grown sons were engaged and planning to get married soon, and he and his wife were looking forward to seeing their grandchildren’s antics.
“Heh, heh heh heh”
After settling his affairs, he headed to Nashville, Tennessee, where former President James Polk lived.
Inside his coat was a revolver that he had luckily acquired.
‘You said you could shoot up to 6 times. Let’s check the number of guards first.’
From the moment he came here with a gun, he was a man who thought he was not in his right mind, but he did not do something crazy like blindly rushing into the house where the former president lived.
The important thing was to kill James Polk, who started a war that might not have happened and caused hundreds of thousands of Americans to die.
“···The security guards are quite high. I heard that even the Democratic Party has lost its connection to him, but he must be rich.”
James Polk had a large farm, and his employees were practically all security guards.
There were guards on duty even at dawn to prevent slaves from escaping, and James Polk rarely came out of the house.
The man had to endure.
To make sure that my hated enemy, James Polk, is killed.
It was the fourth day since I had been waiting around the house for James Falk to come out.
Finally, James Polk was ready to go out. He rode in a carriage with a coachman and two guards and set off.
“Huh?”
A man was standing on the side of the road.
“Get out of the way! You’ll get hit!”
Even as the carriage drew near, the man made no move.
Just as the coachman was about to warn him again, the man took a gun out of his coat and aimed it.
“Chew!”
bang!
A bullet hole appeared between the coachman’s eyebrows.
“what!”
The carriage door opened and two guards jumped out. Because it was winter, they used a box carriage instead of an open-top carriage.
bang!
The man shot the guard on the left. The guard on the right was shocked at the sight.
“Lee, revolver!”
When I saw that there was only one person, I unconsciously let my guard down. Since it wasn’t a military revolver, I had to load it.
The guard aimed his gun hastily, but the price for his carelessness was death.
bang!
“Ugh!”
Both the groom and the guard were killed.
“hey!”
The man shouted.
“I know it’s there. James Fork.”
There was no response.
Thump.
Thump.
Squeak-
The man got into the carriage nervously, but the moment he opened the closed carriage door, he couldn’t help but laugh in vain.
“Ha, hahaha! You little punk, you’re so fearless, you don’t even have a gun and go out?”
James Polk trusted the guards and did not bring a gun.
“Why is he so silent when he was even president? He started a war with his three-inch tongue.”
At the man’s provocation, James Fork said:
“Hey, wait! That’s right. I knew this day would come someday.”
James Fork pretended to be calm when faced with a gun pointed at him, but his words were trembling.
“Ha, but wasn’t the war what everyone wanted? If the people hadn’t elected me, how could I have become president? I’ve never hidden the fact that I’m an expansionist.”
“under.”
There was a lot to say in rebuttal.
Didn’t he incite the people with lies, foment border disputes when he was not properly prepared for war, and prematurely start a war that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans? But James Polk really seemed to believe that he was only responding to the demands of the people.
The man was momentarily speechless in front of that disgusting expression.
When the man was silent for a moment, James Fork opened his mouth again, perhaps thinking that his words had convinced him.
“Put the gun down for a moment and let’s talk…”
That was the time.
“You idiot. Just get out of here!”
Bang! Bang!
“Keuk, huh!”
“Heh, heh heh heh heh heh!”
bang!

News of the assassination of former President James Polk hit the United States hard.
The assassin reportedly killed the coachman and two guards, fired two shots into James Fork’s chest, and then killed himself on the spot.
“That’s bad news. I should be more careful too.”
Lieutenant Lucas walked along the street reading the ominous article, but there was no answer from behind him.
Instead, an unfamiliar voice was heard.
“You’re so self-conscious. No one cares about a pyramid like you.”
“hmm?”
When Lieutenant Lucas turned around, the guards were down and a strange man was getting up.
“That’s why I had to step forward myself.”
Creepy-
Upon hearing that, I realized the stranger’s identity.
“Sir, surely not Mek···.”
“fizzle.”
Phew-
Lieutenant Lucas felt a sharp impact on his head, and his consciousness was cut off.
Lieutenant Lucas’ parents, who were large ranchers and local figures, found out about their youngest son’s disappearance late and raised various suspicions through the media, but not many people were interested in the disappearance case.
America was already too chaotic for such a trivial matter to become a topic of conversation.
