I Got the Almighty Tongue - Chapter 70

“Get out now.”
Soo-Jung hears the bell ring and quickly goes to the front door and opens it.
Crash
“Are you crazy? Is this how you came here?”
Ye-yoon enters Soo-jung’s house with a bare face and no makeup, not wearing a hat or mask.
“So what? I came by car, so no one saw me anyway.”
“If you do that, there’s a chance that you’ll start dating someone strangely. A lot of celebrities live in our apartment complex.”
Soo-jung, who has suffered through scandals, is frustrated with Ye-yoon’s lack of vigilance.
“Okay. I’ll be careful. Did you order anything to eat?”
“When watching TV, it’s chicken.”
“I admit it. I want to eat chicken today too.”
“Why are you like this? You’re telling me I’m a woman who cooks at home now?”
“That’s only for a day or two. I have to live the way I used to. It’s too hard.”
“Yeah. I overdid it a bit because I made a good steak once. If you keep copying our Jehee’s cooking, it’s going to fail.”
“You said that we only filmed together twice during the broadcast, so why is it our Jehee?”
“We even know each other’s contact information, but you’re just a stranger.”
“Okay. Anyway, it’s beautiful when fans look at it from afar.”
“That’s true. In fact, I’m no different from you.”
“Oh my god. There’s a man who exposes Jeong Su-jeong.”
After becoming close with Ye-yoon, Soo-jeong told her about what happened in New York.
“It was there.”
Sujeong sighs.
“I heard you have a girlfriend?”
“Yeah. I even saw his face. He went to Harvard. He’s handsome.”
“We’ve met each other. I want to date too.”
“Don’t ever get caught. You might end up getting hurt like me.”
“Okay, that’s enough nagging. I wish we could start quickly. The trailer was crazy.”
“Really. Why did that woman cry when she saw Jehee?”
“It either sticks or falls off.”
“Quiet. It’s starting now.”
The opening of Master Chef US is on TV. With Shin Je-hee’s appearance, Master Chef’s popularity has suddenly increased in Korea. A cable broadcasting company that sensed this quickly negotiated with Fox TV to purchase the broadcasting rights. They were in a hurry because they couldn’t even secure a proper broadcast time, so after discussion, they decided to air it at 11 o’clock, which is late at night.
Soo-jung and Ye-yoon became close friends after Ye-yoon posted the steak challenge on Facebook.
At first, we wrote comments to each other and then we started talking privately through notes. Since we both had the common denominator of being fans of Jehee, we were able to quickly become close. And eventually, we promised to watch the live broadcast together today.
Not only was the lack of schedules for the next day a big reason, but since both of them were single, when they didn’t have any filming scheduled, there was nothing to do but watch TV at home.
The broadcast started. The two people sat on the sofa without talking and started watching TV quietly.
The camera pans over the skyscrapers of LA. It then pans around to show the skyscrapers lined up in all directions. Then the sound of a helicopter is heard.
Tutututututututu
The camera follows the helicopter. The helicopter flies for a while and lands on the roof of a huge high-rise building. The three judges get off there. Then comes the narration.
[We’ve been looking for a long time. Who is the best amateur chef in America? We’ve traveled all over the country.]
A truck with the Master Chef logo drives down a road at the foot of a mountain. Then, the truck is shown driving through New York, San Diego, San Francisco, Chicago, and San Jose.
[Applications were received from people claiming to be the best amateur chefs in the country from all over the country.]
As a man opens the door, mail pours out. The room is filled with envelopes containing applications.
[Tens of thousands of applicants flocked in from all over the country, and we vetted them closely.]
A plane bearing the Master Chef logo lands at the airport, and as the doors open, contestants begin to disembark, carrying suitcases.
[The best 200 were selected.]
“I’m from New York. I’m a police officer.”
“I’m from Chicago. I’m a housewife.”
“New Hampshire! Open a store.”
“New Jersey. I work as a librarian.”
“LA. I’m a model.”
“New Orleans. I’m a student.”
“San Francisco. I’m a man, but I’m a housewife.”
Various people pass by, revealing their hometowns and occupations. Then the screen changes.
[Only 200 people are selected from tens of thousands, but even they must pass a rigorous test to enter the Master Chef Kitchen.]
A grandiose music plays and the screen changes. The lights in the Master Chef kitchen, which had been dark, start to come on one by one. And when the lights come on in the front row, the silhouettes of the three judges appear on the screen.
[The industry’s brightest talents will be judging them. The sous chef of New York’s first Italian three-star restaurant, and the young chef of the year, the man with the greatest palate in human history, Shin Je-hee.]
The camera focuses on Jehee. Jehee is making pasta while spinning the fan in a fancy way. She plates the pasta she has made on a plate.
“It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from. Just bring me food that will amaze my tongue.”
Jehee looks at the camera and makes a provocative expression.
[Joe Bastianich, a giant in the industry who runs over 20 great restaurants in the U.S. and also owns vineyards and wineries.]
The camera focuses on Joe. He decants the wine with an elegant gesture. Then he pours it into a glass and lifts it gently to smell the wine.
“Restaurants are honest. If the food is not delicious, customers won’t come. I’ll tell you whether your food is worth selling.
[Gordon Ramsay, a legend in the chef world who runs over 20 restaurants around the world and has collected over ten Michelin stars.]
Gordon walks down a dark hallway in his suit. He opens the door with both hands and enters the splendid Master Chef Kitchen.
“Are you ready to compete? Join us on our journey to the top.”
[Only 30 out of 200 contestants will have a chance to advance to the next round. Who will survive?]
The camera focuses on a man. A man with short blond hair glares at the camera with a provocative look.
[Dominic Jones]
“One seat is mine. That’s already decided. What about the other contestants? They’ll figure out the remaining 29 seats.”
The camera switches to a Hispanic man in his 30s wearing a police uniform. He looks at the camera with a determined look in his eyes and says,
[Colin Powell]
“I came here to win. It doesn’t matter who I’m playing against. Today is one of the biggest opportunities of my life. I don’t intend to miss it.”
A young-faced white woman adjusts her glasses and speaks.
[Ella Schmidt]
“Competition? I’m cooking anyway. I just cook my own food.”
An Asian man sharpens his chef’s knife and says nonchalantly.
[Leon Lee]
“I’ve never lost a competition, in any field. Cooking is no different.”
The camera pans to everyone in the auditorium. Then a heavy door opens and three judges walk in. Everyone applauds and cheers.
The judging has begun. The three judges are waiting for the contestants to finish their dishes and bring them in. Finally, the door opens and a contestant comes in, pushing a tray.
“Please introduce yourself.”
“Dominic Jones, 22 years old.”
“What kind of food have you prepared?”
“This is Sicilian Pasta with Mackerel (Pasta Con le Sarde).”
“Wow. Joe is Italian and Jehee is an Italian chef, but he’s really confident in bringing pasta. Let’s see if he’s as skilled as he is confident.”
Gordon goes down first and inspects the pasta.
“The ingredients seem well-cooked. The plating is also neat and well done. It looks like you have experience working in a restaurant. Is that right?”
“I worked as a kitchen assistant in a restaurant, but I never became a chef.”
“Then where did you learn to cook?”
“I learned it by just looking at it. I went home and practiced it by myself.”
Gordon tastes the pasta and nods.
“Joe, try some pasta. I wonder what Italians think. Jehee, let’s try it together.”
At Gordon’s words, Joe and Jehee go down together to taste it.
“Making mackerel pasta is harder than you might think. This is because mackerel itself is not a tasty fish. It is a small fish, so it is difficult to prepare and it is fishy, so you have to use a lot of ingredients to supplement the flavor.”
Jehee explains pasta like an Italian chef.
“This pasta is well made. It has a lot of anchovies and sardines, but it’s not fishy. But it definitely brings out the flavor of the fish.”
Gordon takes another bite of pasta, his expression turning red with approval.
“That’s right. Fried breadcrumbs and mackerel go well together. I have no complaints.”
Joe agrees with Gordon.
“There are so many spices here, from saffron and oregano to thyme and fennel. They don’t clash with each other. They’re well-balanced. It’s an attractive pasta and a great skill.”
Jehee looks satisfied.
“You’re the first to pass. Congratulations, Dominic.”
Gordon hands Dominic an apron. Dominic smiles brightly and takes it.
“Thank you. I will make many more delicious things for you in the future.”
He speaks confidently and exits.
“Are you doing well?”
Gordon gets lucky.
“He must be one of the candidates for the championship.”
“The character is solid. He’s confident and skilled.”
Joe and Jehee also agree with Gordon.
Then, many participants opened the door and came in, but no one received an apron.
“Damn it. Chicken needs to be cooked longer than you think. It’s undercooked. Get out of here!”
Gordon yells at one contestant.
“This cactus stir-fry is nothing special. If you go to New Mexico, the kids in the neighborhood can make it better.”
Joe criticizes harshly.
“It’s a mixture of spices. The balance is off. It’s not like it’ll taste good just by throwing everything in.”
One participant lowers his head at Jehee’s words.
Then the door opens. And a contestant comes in. He looks Latino and has a smiling face, like a smiling merchant.
“Please introduce yourself.”
“My name is Lucas Perez. I am 34 years old and I am a stay-at-home mom.”
The man introduces himself in a voice that is not at all nervous.
“A man who is a housewife. That’s not a common case. Is there a story behind it?”
Joe asks if she’s interested.
“At first, my wife and I both worked. After we had a child, I earned money and my wife took care of the household. But the house became a mess. My wife had no talent for cooking or housework. But she was a capable accountant.”
“So that’s why you switched roles?”
“Yes. Since we earn about the same amount of money anyway, I decided to focus on housework since I’m better at it. As I started doing housework, I ended up cooking a lot more. I studied cookbooks every day.”
“I’m looking forward to it. What dish have you prepared today?”
Jehee asks about cooking.
“This is Rombo Allo Spumante (Grilled Flounder with Sparkling Wine).”
“The dish is beautiful. The white meat, cream sauce, mushrooms and parsley are impressive. It has an aesthetic sense.”
Joe looks closely at the food, then picks up a knife and tastes it. Gordon and Jehee also taste it.
“You sautéed shallots and mushrooms in butter. Then you made a sauce with cream, wine, salt, and pepper. It’s interesting that you used cornmeal to create viscosity. The halibut is also cooked to perfection. The skin is crispy and the meat is tender. The balance is great.”
Jehee highly praises grilled flounder.
“Yes. We need contestants like this. It’s not easy to make a delicious fish dish. Well done. Take the apron.”
Gordon hands Lucas the apron.
“Thank you. My wife and kids will love it.”
Lucas happily accepts the apron and runs out.
“Now I can see some contestants who are starting to do well.”
Jehee speaks to the two with a relieved expression on her face.
“Yeah. It was just too much. Especially that wolf meat.”
As Gordon finishes speaking, the screen shows three people eating wolf meat and spitting it out.
“The roast beef was terrible too.”
As soon as Je-hee finishes speaking, the screen shows Jo throwing away the dry roast beef in the trash without even eating it.
“Fuck. That’s an insult to British food.”
Gordon shakes his head indignantly as if the thought occurred to him again.
“Isn’t it true that British food can no longer be insulted?”
When Jo tells a joke, Jehee laughs loudly.
“It’s not the food that’s the problem. It’s who makes it. Whatever I make tastes good.”
Gordon raises his index finger and shakes it from side to side as he speaks. Then the door opens and Ella comes in.
