Tacos and Oven Pasta

“That’s the woman from the trailer!”

Ye-yoon looks at the screen and shouts.

“That’s right. It’s a waste to waste your face. It would be pretty if you put on some makeup.”

The two people who were watching TV started to sob after a while, one by one.

“Hey, give me some tissues.”

Ye-yoon hands over a tissue.

Peng

After blowing my nose, I go back to watching TV.

“Tell me. Who are you?”

“Ha..hard puncher.”

“Okay. You pass.”

“It’s so touching. Jaehee is really cool.”

Soo-Jeong looks at Jae-Hee with eyes that seem to be in love.

“This girl still hasn’t given up on her obsession. She should just watch TV.”

The screen changes to Ella sitting on a chair, taking questions.

“When I got the apron? It was so great. I wasn’t very confident in my cooking. But when Chef Shin Je-hee said I was good, right? Yes. She said I was a hard puncher. Now I think I can do well. I’ll try.”

The screen returns to the judges.

Gordon shakes his head and pushes the plate away. Joe raises his hand and points to the exit, and the contestant lowers his head and walks away. As soon as Jehee finishes eating, he looks for a tissue and spits it out.

[There are few contestants who can satisfy the three judges. Half of the contestants have already left the Master Chef Kitchen. And here comes another contestant to challenge for the main event.]

[Colin Powell]

“I’m a cop. I’m the best cook in New York. Seriously? You can ask me. Everybody in the NYPD knows that I’m going to come out here and win.”

The screen shows a police station. As the camera pans inside, officers are seen cooking and eating in the break room.

“We often cook simple meals like this for ourselves because we have to go out whenever we get a call on the radio. If it weren’t for Colin, many police officers would have just left. There are even people who go to work just to eat the food Colin makes.”

Colin comes out dressed in his police uniform and makes pasta. His fellow officers cheer and share the food. Colin looks on with a pleased expression. Then he speaks to the camera.

“See? The cops are more picky than you think. But my food always satisfies them. I’m closer to winning than any of the other contestants.”

The screen changes. The door to the judges’ table opens and Colin comes in.

“Hello. This is Colin Powell.”

“Nice to meet you. Could you please explain the dish?”

“The dish I prepared today is Birria Tacos. They are the best tacos of all tacos.”

Colin smiles and sets up the food with a confident expression.

“Wow! It looks like one bite would really cause problems for your blood vessels.”

Jehee looks at the taco and admires it.

The tortilla, which looks like it was fried in oil, is filled to the brim with beef soaked in brown sauce. On top of that, the taco is topped with onions, cheese, cilantro, and parsley, showing off its magnificent grandeur. There is a thick brown sauce on the side.

“But we don’t shy away from things like this.”

Gordon Ramsay smiles and picks up a taco, dipping it in sauce before putting it in his mouth.

“Hahahaha. What are you guys doing? Come eat some too.”

Gordon chews and swallows it, then laughs heartily. He then offers it to Joe and Jehee as well.

Joe and Jehee also pick up tacos, dip them in sauce, and take big bites. Joe chews and swallows all of his food, coughs, and then takes a sip of water. Jehee chews another bite as if it’s delicious, then closes his eyes and analyzes the taste.

“This is a really great taco. I salute the boldness of not considering health. There’s a ton of chili in it. The spices and meat dance in your mouth. I can’t help but be impressed.”

Joe gives him a thumbs up and takes another bite of his taco.

“This is crazy. It has three kinds of chilies: guajillo chiles, ancho chiles, and chile de arbol. It has cumin, thyme, cloves, and cinnamon as spices. It’s just blended in a blender with beer. Then it’s poured over seasoned meat and then it’s put in a pressure cooker and it’s super tender.”

Colin is surprised when Jehee explains the recipe.

“No. How do you know that?”

“You’ll know once you try it, so I’m a judge. By the way, it’s a violent recipe. But it’s delicious. I also liked that they used a pressure cooker to make the meat tender quickly. If they had used beef cheek as a rule, they wouldn’t have been able to make it on time. Choosing sirloin was a smart choice. It passed.”

Colin whistles.

“I have no complaints either. It was the most delicious food I had today.”

Gordon nods.

“congratulations.”

Joe extends his hand and asks to shake hands.

“I really want to try that.”

Soo-Jung, who was watching TV, sees a taco and starts drooling.

“I’m not the only one who thought that. It looks really delicious. I guess they don’t sell it in my country?”

Ye-yoon looks at the delivered chicken with cold eyes.

The camera cuts between contestants receiving aprons and cheering, and those bowing and leaving the kitchen.

[The seats are filling up one after another. I wonder who will take the remaining empty seats.]

“Jake.”

With a serious face, Gordon calls the contestant’s name.

“What are you thinking, serving raw Alaskan salmon?”

Gordon tells Jake without even touching the salmon salad he brought out.

“Huh? We always eat like this?”

Jake blinks and looks at Gordon as if to ask what he’s talking about.

“Listen carefully. Go home immediately and take your family to the hospital. Salmon is a fish with a lot of parasites. That’s why you should always use farmed salmon when you eat it raw. Alaskan salmon should be cooked. Got it?”

Jake leaves the venue with his food.

“I doubt the level of education of Americans. If you get tested, you’ll probably find more than a few people with parasites in their bodies.”

Gordon loosens his tie as he tells Joe and Je-hee that he is tired.

“This needs to be on TV. There are a lot of people in the US who fish for salmon and they eat it raw. Whale worm is a dangerous parasite. If you have a stomachache or diarrhea after eating raw fish, you should definitely go to the hospital.”

Jehee warns people towards the camera.

The screen changes and another contestant opens the door and walks in. She is a plump Latina woman.

“Please introduce yourself.”

“My name is Karen Adriana. I am 35 years old and I am a real estate agent.”

“Please explain the dish.”

“I made Baked Rigatoni. It’s American style, not Italian, so you won’t be mad, right?”

Karen looks at the judges cautiously and says.

“No matter where a cuisine spreads to, it is localized. Don’t worry, it’s natural.”

Jehee reassures Karen.

Karen places the oven dish containing the food on the counter.

“This is also great.”

Inside a large, clear ovenproof dish, you can see the pasta covered in cheese. The cheese and rigatoni noodles are layered tightly together, almost like lasagna.

“It’s hot, so be careful.”

“I’ll try it first.”

As Joe approaches, Karen uses a large serving spoon to portion out some pasta and hands it to Joe. Joe picks up the plate, sniffs it, and tastes the pasta.

“As an Italian, I can’t stand this. It’s a badly made Bolognese sauce. It only has two ingredients: meat and tomato sauce! And a little salt and pepper sprinkled on top. And then there’s so much mozzarella and Parmigiano-Reggiano that you can’t even get a fork in it. But the point is, it’s delicious.”

Joe makes a funny face.

“I’m not that narrow-minded. Pasta Bolognese has had a hard time since coming to America. But it was definitely delicious. I pass.”

Karen cheers.

“This is a really American pasta. I wonder what the Italian chef thinks.”

Gordon passes the turn to Jehee. Jehee scoops up a large piece of pasta with a fork and puts it in her mouth. Then, as usual, she closes her eyes and analyzes the taste.

“As Joe said, the ingredients are meat and tomato sauce. But the meat is varied. Of course, there is beef, but also the casing of Italian sausage with fennel is removed and added. And the bacon is also finely chopped to add flavor.

Of course it’s heavy because there’s a lot of meat. In Italy, they’d balance it out with celery, carrots, and onions. But what about America? They balance it out with cheese, and more cheese. They added mozzarella, Parmigiano-Reggiano, and ricotta cheese to make it creamy.

This is a violent pasta. If I had to name it, it would be something like ‘Eat and Die Pasta’. But it’s delicious. I can’t deny it. I pass.”

Karen jumps for joy. Gordon gives her the apron and hugs her.

“I look forward to the future.”

[One contestant prepares a dish as talented contestants appear one after another.]

Leon is chopping kimchi. He is frying okra and onions in a pan.

The screen changes. Leon is sitting in a chair and being interviewed.

“Korea? I’ve never been there. They say it’s where I was born, but I was too young to remember. Still, it’s my parents’ hometown, so it’s more special than other countries. I didn’t really realize it, but I really like Korean food. I also enjoy eating spicy food.”

“Cooking? I’ve done a lot of it. I had to take care of my own food. I’ve been trying out different things, thinking back to the foods I used to eat a lot when I was little.”

The screen changes. The door opens and Leon comes in, pushing a tray. And five minutes later, Soo-Jung and Ye-Yoon are crying loudly while watching TV.

“Oh my. You shouldn’t have swollen eyes. I have a shoot the day after tomorrow.”

Sniff sniff

“Sister, can you give me some tissues?”

Sniff sniff

“Oh…so pitiful. What can I do? Your parents passed away in a foreign country and you can’t get along with anyone.”

Hmm!

Sujeong blows her nose loudly.

“I am sorry.”

Leon’s clumsy Korean is heard through the TV.

Eww

The two hugged each other and began to cry again.

The screen changes to Leon cooking in the kitchen. Leon stirs the bulgogi on the pan with his familiar hand movements.

“Korea? It’s a country I must visit someday. It’s my roots. I’m also going to study Korean, although it’s a little late. But first, I have to win Master Chef. Please watch over me. I’ll run with all my might.”

Jehee comes into the kitchen and tastes the bulgogi.

“You’re good at it? It’s not something you’ve done once or twice. Leon.”

“Chef.”

“huh?”

“My name is Lee Rae-won.”

Leon smiles at the camera.
