82. Momoko’s Distrustful Plan 1
A talk show with lots of chatter was playing in the background on a lazy Sunday afternoon. I had imagined my senior’s living room many times through my earphones, but I was still a little nervous.
I was surprised by my senior’s sudden actions earlier, but I couldn’t run away from this house yet. By spending time with him in his own personal space, he would come to feel more comfortable with me, and if my mother-in- law saw my beautiful eating habits, she would like me even more.

“Itadakimasu!”
A large bowl of somen noodles was placed in the center of the table. My mother-in-law had apologized for serving such a simple dish to a guest, but to me, it was a welcome change.
When I’m not eating a special treat, and when I’m sitting around a normal dinner table on a normal day, I can trick myself into thinking that it’s normal to eat with my senior. And when I think about it that way, I realize that I’ve really changed.
“Himawari. Can I borrow your bowl?”
“Oh, thank you, Onii-chan.”
Himawari, who was sitting across from me, passed a small dish to my senior, who was sitting next to her. My senior asked, “Is this enough?” as he served noodles into Himawari’s bowl. In my hand was a bowl with somen noodles and a piece of ice, which I had served myself, and which was now soaking in the cold noodle soup that my senior had just won.
Sora-senpai was smiling gently and taking care of Himawari’s every need. It couldn’t be helped. I was sitting diagonally across the table, and Himawari was still a junior high school student, so she didn’t have the same life skills or common sense as I did. That’s why he was reluctantly helping her. My senior was kind to everyone, and he was the kind of hero who couldn’t leave a pitiful child alone.
“Do you want some wasabi?”
Ah, that head tilt is so cute. She does it from time to time. I love it.
“My big brother puts wasabi in his noodles. Is it good?”
“I like it a lot.”
“…Then I want to do the same as my big brother.”
“If you put too much, it’ll be spicy, so let’s just put a little.”
“hehehehe, thank you.”
It would be nice if we could have such a peaceful and harmonious conversation. That would be great. Why does it have to be just Himawari alone? I’m here too. Of course, I understand that senpai has to talk to Himawari since she’s been talking to our mother-in-law, but since there are four of us, it’s normal for the conversation to be split into two pairs.
But why did senpai sit over there in the first place? Himawari and I were sitting down first, so both the seats next to us were empty. And then senpai sat in that seat. Senpai is closer to me, so wouldn’t it be normal to sit next to me? When you go out with friends in a group, the two closest friends tend to sit across from each other or next to each other so they can talk more easily. Why did you sit over there?
“…! It’s refreshing and delicious.”
“Right?”
No, I understand. I understand. Himawari is younger. Besides, if senpai sat next to me, our mother-in-law would have to sit next to Himawari, and senpai must have thought that would be pitiful for Himawari, who isn’ t good at talking. Senpai is kind, so she can be considerate like that. I can get along well with our mother-in-law, even though it’s our first time meeting.
Speaking of which, I’ve been thinking about wasabi in my noodles. When putting senpai eats at her house, she’s the only one who chooses different condiments. I’ve memorized all of them. That kid doesn’t know, notice, or sympathize with senpai’s preferences at all. She just happily accepts whatever is given to her. It’s not fair that she gets to put mayonnaise on takoyaki but not on okonomiyaki, or that she gets to put strong mentsuyu on her fried eggs. I was planning on casually mentioning that I also like wasabi, even though my family all likes ginger, and that our food preferences are quite similar. I’ve been planning that for a long time.
“Speaking of which, have you seen Uguisu-san since then?”
“…Um. That’s…”
While our mother-in-law was encrossed in her conversation with me, senpai started talking about that woman.
“If it’s hard to talk about, should I go with you? She’s a little scary, though.”
“Huh? Ah, um, well, I, um, I can’t talk well, um”
“…Oh, no, sorry. I shouldn’t have asked now. I’ll ask you properly later.”
So you’re going to talk to her again later, just the two of you?
Somewhere? Or are you going to wait for me to go home? Will you call her? When? Tonight?
Talk to me tonight. Who are you going to drop off on the way home today, me or that kid? Who are you going to send a LINE to first to make sure they got home safely?
Wait a minute. You just brought up Uguisu-san on your own. Why did you do that when she’s not even here? I know that senpai and Uguisu-san are dating, but that’s only because they have to for the mission, and senpai doesn’t have any romantic feelings for her at all. She only pretends to love her in front of that mentally fragile, annoying, busty woman. It’s not for that woman’s sake, but for world peace. Senpai is kind and a wonderful hero.
Then why is Tokiwa Uguisu’s name coming up here, where she’s not even present? It’s strange. There aren’t even any burglars planted. You don’t need to please her here.
Speaking of which, senpai often talks about that woman even when she’s on the phone with me. I thought it was natural because she was asking me for advice as a fellow woman, and I offered to be a phase talk services from the beginning. She also talks about Himawari a lot, worrying about her not going to middle school. They both live at the base and have completely given up on normal life, unlike me, so senpai is always looking out for them.
… But wait. Doesn’t senpai ever talk about me when she’s talking to other people?
That’s right. Even when she was in Himawari’s room or on the phone with Uguisu-san. She talks about hero work and her university, but she never mentions me. It’s strange, because I talk to senpai the most and LINE her the most.
“…Could it be, senpai?”
“Oh my? What’s wrong, Momo-chan?”
Oops, I was thinking too much and the conversation stopped.
“No, um. It’s just. It’s delicious. I don’t eat it very often at home.”
“I see. So, is your family wealthy, Momo-chan?”
That was a bit sarcastic. I have to be careful.
“Um, I think we’re just average. But my father doesn’t like dishes where everyone shares from the same plate. So we never have hot pot or teppanyaki at home. I hear that some of my friends have takoyaki for dinner, so I was a little envious… I’m having a lot of fun today!”
“Oh my, in that case, why don’t you come over to my place next time? I don’t have a takoyaki maker, but… hot pot would be too hot for this time of year. Maybe I’ll make okonomiyaki.”
Good, I managed to get the conversation back on track.
“Wow, that sounds great. But are you sure? I’d feel bad for intruding.”
“Oh, it’s fine. It would be nice to have such a cute girl brighten up the dinner table. That’s right, Himawari-chan can come too.”
What a waste. She’s inviting her too. This was my chance to be the only one invited to senpai’s house.
“Eh, m-me?”
“Mom, please, don’t try to force it.”
I was worried for a moment, but thanks to Himawari-chan being shy, we were able to avoid another home visit from the two of them. Next time they come, I’ll make sure to go by myself, if possible. If I ‘m lucky, I might even get my father-in-law to like me.
“Well then, just Momoko-chan next time…”
Just as my mother-in-law was trying to wheedle her way in while glaring at my senior, words that made me turn my attention to the TV, which had been showing a ranking of this week’s movies, suddenly jumped out at me.
“Next up, a topic of interest: Philance Red boldly defeats a bus hijacker! All passengers safe!”
“Look, Sora. News about your favorite Philance Red.”
I could see Himawari-chan react slightly to my mother-in-law’s words.
