43. Surprise
I told my sister Mai that I was going to visit Mashiro’s house, and afterward, I received an encouraging message: “Have fun today, big brother!”
As for my mom, it seemed Mashiro had negotiated something for her, as I received a message on RINE saying, “Please say hi to Mashiro for me.”
After that, I slipped into my raincoat, grabbed the gear I had prepared for camping, and left the house.
Despite holding an umbrella, I was getting soaked in the heavy rain as I hurried toward the apartment where Mashiro lived.
I had visited Mashiro’s house many times before.
However, this was my first time coming in such bad weather.
I carefully avoided the puddles forming on the road, and despite the rain and wind buffeting me, I somehow managed to arrive in front of the room where Mashiro lived.
I pressed the intercom next to the door and waited a moment, then heard the sound of slippers pattering from inside, and Mashiro appeared.
“Ryusuke!”
“Whoa!?”
She stood at the entrance, holding a large bath towel, and as she spread it out, she draped it over my face.
Suddenly blinded, I was taken aback, and I could hear Mashiro’s worried voice.
“Welcome, Ryusuke. You got all wet in the rain, didn’t you… Thank you for coming even though I insisted.”
“I-I’m fine with this much. But seriously, it’s surprising when you suddenly cover my face with a towel.”
“Hehe… Sorry about that, but I thought you might be soaked. I was worried you might catch a cold like this…”
“I’m okay since I wore a raincoat. My hair might be a little wet, but my clothes aren’t soaked.”
She had been waiting with a bath towel in hand, concerned about how drenched I was.

Grateful for her kindness, I pushed the towel off my face to find Mashiro smiling softly at me.
“I’ll start running the bath right away. Oh, or do you want to take a shower?”
“No, you don’t have to go that far. Just drying off a bit is enough for me.”
“Got it! Then, after you’re done drying off, come to the living room. I have something I want to show you!”
With that, Mashiro returned to the living room with a cheerful smile.
I tilted my head, wondering what she wanted to show me.
After taking off my raincoat and drying my wet hair, I stepped inside.
“Excuse me!”
I was already used to entering Mashiro’s house.
I took off my shoes and walked down the familiar hallway toward the living room where she was presumably waiting.
When I opened the door, I was taken aback by the sight before me.
“M-Mashiro… what on earth is this?”
It was supposed to be the living room inside the house, yet a larger tent that we had prepared for camping was set up there.
Inside the tent, a carpet is laid out with cushions, and a small table sits in the center. Sleeping bags are also prepared, making it a cozy place to stay overnight.
Around the tent, there are folding chairs and simple cooking utensils arranged, and a cooler filled with juice in plastic bottles. Additionally, there are decorative garland flags and numerous vases scattered about.
Even though we should be in a living room, it feels as if we are at some campsite.
This is certainly not just an ordinary sleepover.
This is a special campsite created by Mashiro, a place for us to make summer memories together, just the two of us.
As I let out a voice of admiration, Mashiro suddenly appears from the back of the room, wearing a mischievous smile.
“You know, I was wondering if we could camp somehow, so I did some research. It turns out that camping indoors is all the rage right now. Since my living room is spacious, I moved the table and made the room feel like a campsite!”
“I see. With a living room like yours, there’s plenty of space even with all this gear.”
“Yep! Mom won’t be home today, so I thought we could go all out. What do you think? Surprised?”
“Yeah, I’m amazed. I never expected it to be this elaborate inside the house.”
“Hehe… I really tried my best. I wanted to do this with you, Ryusuke, and if we’re going to do it, it should be fun!”
With a cheerful giggle, Mashiro beams.
This must be her version of a surprise. With the heavy rain making outdoor camping impossible, she desperately thought of a way to spend summer vacation-like time with me.
And she turned that thought into action.
It made me incredibly happy, to the point where I couldn’t help but smile warmly.
Wrapped in such joy, I approached Mashiro and gently placed my hand on her head.
“Thank you, Mashiro. I’ve been wondering what to do for a while. I’m really happy that you solved it and made it happen like this.”
“Hehe, I’m glad you’re happy, Ryusuke.”
As I gently stroked her head, she broke into a soft smile. Mashiro, nuzzling against me like a cat, was simply too cute.
After all, Mashiro is invincible and the strongest.
Not even the rain can stop the world’s most beautiful girl. With her natural brightness and creativity, she creates such a wonderful space.
I wanted to praise her, so I continued to gently stroke her head.
With her eyes narrowed and her face all soft, Mashiro pressed her head against my chest.
Then, with a blissful expression, she looked up at me and said, “Ryusuke, let’s have a lot of fun today. We’re camping in the room!”
“Yeah. Let’s play a lot at the best campsite you’ve made, Mashiro.”
“Yes! I won’t let you sleep tonight, okay?”
“In that case, let’s have a contest to see who falls asleep first.”
“Hehe, I’m all for it!”
With that, Mashiro flashed a bright, adorable smile.
Thus began the memory-making of my room camping with Mashiro, just the two of us on the first day of summer vacation.
