47. Mashiro Upon Waking
The chirping of birds heralded the morning.
As I rubbed my still heavy eyelids and opened my eyes, refreshing sunlight streamed in from outside the window.
The rain that had continued all day had completely stopped, and a clear blue sky stretched out without a cloud in sight. Perhaps because of that, a warm, summery heat lingered in the room.
Wiping the sweat that beaded on my forehead with the back of my hand, I turned over and found a girl with an angelic, adorable face sleeping right next to me.
With translucent white skin, a well-defined nose, and plump, glossy lips. Her beautiful black hair flowed smoothly, brushing against her slightly flushed cheeks. A sweet scent wafted from her slender neck, and I couldn’t help but swallow hard.

By the way, I slept with Mashiro as my pillow yesterday.
It was my first camping trip in a new room, and with the added situation of a power outage, I felt more exhilarated than usual.
Perhaps because of that, I found myself saying, “Today is a special day,” and I ended up doing bold things I normally wouldn’t. As those memories surfaced, my drowsy consciousness gradually returned to clarity.
I can’t help but feel embarrassed about what I did. I stroked Mashiro’s cheeks as she snuggled close, touched her ears, and even tickled under her chin…
Every time the scene from yesterday came to mind, my heart raced, and I took deep breaths to calm my pounding chest.
Once I regained my composure, I gazed at Mashiro’s sleeping face right next to me.
The sight of her sleeping was so defenseless, making her look much younger than usual. The phrase “innocent angel” seemed to fit her perfectly.
As I gently stroked Mashiro’s hair, which was making soft sleeping sounds, she stirred slightly and let out a sweet “Mmm…” as she nestled closer to me.
It seemed she was having a good dream.
Her mouth was relaxed, and she wore a blissful expression that was almost drooling.
I thought I shouldn’t disturb Mashiro, who was having such a lovely dream, so I tried to quietly slip out of the tent without waking her.
Just then, Mashiro rubbed her head against my chest and hugged me tightly.
Her fluffy hair tickled me, and her soft body felt so comforting.
(Just a little longer, like this would be nice…)
I found Mashiro, sleeping like this, utterly adorable, and I didn’t want to let go of her warmth.
So, I gently pulled her small body closer. Just like she did last night, I wrapped my hand around her back and softly patted her.
Mashiro settled comfortably in my arms, continuing to sleep with a happy expression on her face.
As I savored her warmth and softness for a while, her blue eyes slowly opened.
“Mmm… Ryuusuke…?”
Those blue eyes, still drowsy, caught mine but seemed unfocused. After a blissful, relaxed smile spread across her face, she nuzzled against me like a cuddly cat, snuggling into my chest.
As if confirming I was there, Mashiro hugged me tightly. Then, in a dreamy, sweet voice, she said:
“Ryuusuke… good morning.”
“Good morning, Mashiro. Did you sleep well?”
“Mmm, mmm… I slept well…”
Her sleepy, slightly slurred tone and her defenseless appearance made my heart swell with affection. Then Mashiro hugged me again, weaving her words with a soft, fuzzy voice.
“Hehe… you were in my dream too, Ryuusuke…?”
“What kind of dream was it?”
“Well, I was being really clingy with you… it was such a happy dream.”
“Isn’t that still true now?”
“That’s why it feels like I’m continuing the dream…”
—
“Is that so? But this isn’t a dream, you know.”
“Yeah… that’s why I’m so happy.”
“Masaki really is such a spoiled one. There, there.”
As I stroked her head, Masaki relaxed her cheeks and smiled happily.
I wanted to keep spoiling her like that, but it was about time to start tidying up the room. Even though Masaki’s mother rarely came home, there was always a chance, and she would surely be surprised to see the living room looking like a campsite.
Suppressing my desire to sleep in with Masaki, I called out to her.
“Masaki, it’s time to wake up.”
“Hmm… no way.”
“No way isn’t an option. We need to pack up the tent and make breakfast.”
“Mmm… what are we having for breakfast…?”
“I’m thinking of making your favorite omelet and miso soup, and maybe grilling some salmon.”
“Yay… then I’ll get up.”
“Honestly. You’re so easy to please.”
“Hehe…”
Masaki grinned and, after rubbing her head against my chest one last time, pulled away.

Still looking sleepy, Masaki slowly rubbed her eyes and stepped outside the tent. I followed her out.
It seemed the power outage from last night had been resolved, as pressing the air conditioning remote immediately brought forth a cool breeze.
Yesterday’s weather had been bad and quite cold, but today it had turned into a summer-like temperature. It was very nice to be able to use the air conditioner and cool off like this.
After that, Masaki and I neatly folded the tent that had turned the living room into a campsite and packed away the other camping gear. We returned the furniture that had been shoved into a corner back to its original position and took a breath.
It seemed that Masaki had woken up while tidying up, as she returned to her usual energetic self midway through.
“Now, that’s everything done.”
“Yep! Ryusuke, thank you for your hard work!”
“Well then, as promised, let’s make breakfast.”
“I’ve been waiting for this!”
As I headed toward the kitchen, Masaki jumped up and hugged my arm, beaming with a wide smile.
I thought about how truly spoiled she was, but my cheeks naturally relaxed as I looked at her smile.
