63. A Gentle Summer Day ①
The day after the beach outing.
When I woke up in the morning, my body was aching with muscle pain. After playing on the unfamiliar sandy beach and moving around with the beach ball yesterday, my entire body was screaming in protest.
Despite having such a blast, Mai headed off to club activities without showing any signs of fatigue from yesterday. I thought to myself how tough she was as I watched her dash out of the house with such energy.
“Well then… I guess I should start getting ready too.”
I cracked my sore muscles and began to prepare to head out.
Actually, I was invited to Mashiro’s house again today. We had talked about spending a leisurely time together while working on our summer vacation assignments, so I was planning to pack my bag with writing tools, textbooks, and various handouts and head over to her place.
Though I had been fully enjoying the summer vacation with room camping and beach outings, I also needed to take care of my responsibilities as a student.
To shed my delinquent image and act like a serious honor student, I had to make sure to finish my summer assignments properly.
By working on the assignments with Mashiro, I could increase our time together, killing two birds with one stone. That’s why I was getting ready to create summer memories under the guise of a study session.
I brushed my teeth, washed my face, and then styled my hair, standing in front of the bathroom mirror, staring blankly at my reflection.
“Can you really get this tan from just one day at the beach?”
I hadn’t applied sunscreen during yesterday’s beach outing, and as a result, I was looking at my nicely tanned brown skin in the mirror. My skin is relatively resistant, so it didn’t peel or turn red, just achieving a nice healthy tan.
Mai, too, seemed to have gotten a nice tan from having too much fun at the beach, her skin a healthy wheat color. She must have gotten so caught up in playing that her sunscreen wore off along the way.
She had been so absorbed in having fun that she forgot to reapply, and as her older brother, I found her sun-kissed skin to be a charming testament to how much she enjoyed the sea.
Masahiro wondered how things were going as he finished changing and returned to the living room.
“~♪”
The sound coming from his smartphone was the notification for a new message.
Could it be a message from Masahiro? He thought as he opened it, but this time he was mistaken.
The sender was Reo Kizaki.
He had heard that they were holed up in a training camp for the basketball club deep in the mountains, but it seemed that the long camp had finally come to an end.
The message contained that report, and he quickly tapped the screen to reply to Reo.
“I see. The basketball camp must have been quite tough, huh?”
“Yeah. I really understood why the seniors kept telling us first-years not to ‘run away.’ It was seriously hard. I thought I was going to die.”
“But since it was in the mountains, there was no escape. That’s just cruel. But I guess you did your best, right?”
“Of course. I’m entrusted with being a regular, so I can’t show any weakness. Plus, Kyoya was working hard too, so I couldn’t let him see me looking bad, right?”
“He was talking about becoming a regular and making an impact too. That’s good to hear; I’m glad you both could manage.”
While he was enjoying room camping and swimming with Masahiro, it seemed Reo and Nishikawa were sweating it out in club activities, experiencing a refreshing youth typical of high school students. The tone of the message made him feel that they would have grown even more by the next time they met.
“By the way, Ryusuke. Now that the camp is over, I have a bit more flexibility with my time. Since it’s summer vacation, do you think we could all hang out again?”
“Of course. If you let me know when you and Nishikawa have practice off, I’ll keep my schedule open, and I think Masahiro will be free too, so I’ll invite her on those days.”
“Thanks! Let’s invite Kyoya too and get the four of us together. Speaking of which, how about this Sunday? Does that work for you and Masahiro?”
He had plans to go to a summer festival with Masahiro on Sunday.
They were planning to check out the food stalls together and enjoy the fireworks when night fell, creating summer memories together.
If Reo and Nishikawa joined, the fun would double, and it would be like a dream to enjoy the summer festival with all their friends. Masahiro got along well with the two of them, so she would surely be delighted.
When he mentioned this to Reo, he readily agreed, saying, “I’m all for going to the summer festival. If it’s okay, we’d love to join you.”
“I’ll be heading to Masahiro’s house to hang out, so I’ll ask about you and Nishikawa then. I think it should be fine, so I’ll get back to you.”
“Got it, I’m looking forward to your message. See you later.”
After finishing his exchange with Reo, he put away his smartphone and then grabbed his bag, heading towards the entrance.
Both room camping and swimming had turned out to be incredibly fun memories, but thanks to Reo, he felt like even more enjoyable memories could be made.
Feeling happy about that, he set off for Masahiro’s house.
