76. An Unexpected Visitor
“Hey, big brother, are you feeling better from your cold?”
“Yeah. I’m all good now. I made you worry, didn’t I? Sorry about that.”
“Not at all! Thanks to you being down with a cold, I got to eat Masaki-san’s homemade cooking. It was actually pretty lucky, right?”
“Make sure to thank Masaki properly. She took care of you for two whole days.”
“Of course! I thanked her yesterday, and I said thanks again today at RINE, so it’s all good!”
The next morning.
Having fully recovered from my cold, I was tying my uniform tie.
I was chatting with Mai, who was relaxing in the living room, lying on the sofa with the remote in hand, watching the morning news program.
Normally, Mai would leave the house much earlier than me for morning practice with the track team, but today she seemed to be taking it easy. With her chestnut-colored ponytail swaying, she was playfully kicking her legs as she relaxed.
“Hey, Mai, don’t you have morning practice with the track team today?”
“Nope! I took a break this week. It’s not good to push myself too hard.”
“I see. You seemed to be overdoing it lately, so taking it easy once in a while might be a good idea.”
Mai had already changed into her uniform and was ready, with her bag placed next to the sofa. It looked like she intended to lounge around on the sofa until it was time to head to school.
Thinking I should make my sister’s morning time even more luxurious, I decided to stand in the kitchen and brew some coffee.
I ground my favorite coffee beans with a hand mill and poured the filtered coffee into a mug.
The pleasant aroma of the coffee beans wafted through the room, and Mai lifted her head with a dreamy expression as she sniffed the air.
“Big brother, did you make coffee?”
“Yep. It’s a nice relaxing time after all.”
“Wow… Really!? You’re the best, big brother, so thoughtful~!”
Jumping up from the sofa, Mai bounced towards the mug filled with coffee. I couldn’t help but smile at her bunny-like movements as I handed her the freshly brewed coffee.
Holding the cup with both hands, Mai sipped the coffee with a satisfied expression. Just as I was about to sit down on the sofa and take a sip of my own coffee, the doorbell rang.
Ding-dong! The sound of the doorbell caught Mai’s attention.
“Oh, could it be Masaki-san!? Did she come to pick you up?”
“No. Masaki is at school early today preparing for the cultural festival. So I don’t think it’s her.”
“Oh, really? I was hoping to thank Masaki-san…”
Mai, who had been looking forward to seeing her beloved Masaki in the morning for the first time in a while, was clearly disappointed.
It seemed that Masaki was quite busy with preparations for the cultural festival, gathering at school early in the morning. She was even busy during lunchtime, so I felt a bit lonely not being able to see her either.
I gently patted Mai’s head to cheer her up and then headed to the entrance.
It wasn’t Masaki, and it was too early for a delivery. So who could it possibly be? I reached for the door.
—
Could it be that my old friends from middle school, Kogane and Obayashi, who I haven’t seen in a while, were worried about me since we haven’t hung out at all lately?
As I thought this, I opened the door—and there stood an unexpected person.
“Hey, Ryusuke. I was worried and came to check on you. Sorry for being a bit late, but I brought you a little something.”
“Reo, you came?”
On the other side of the door was Reo, wearing a refreshing smile. He held a plastic bag filled with sports drinks and instant soup.
It was the first time Reo had come to my house, and honestly, I was a bit surprised. I was happy he came to visit, but I didn’t know how to respond and felt a bit flustered.
Then Reo looked at my uniform and spoke up.
“Ryusuke, since you’re in your uniform, does that mean you’re going back to school today?”
“Yeah. Thanks to Mashiro’s care, I actually recovered by yesterday. I decided to take just yesterday off since I might relapse if I push myself too hard.”
“I see. It’s great to hear you’re feeling better. Actually, I wanted to come with Kyouya, but he’s on cleaning duty today and couldn’t make it.”
“I think he’s busy with basketball practice, so it can’t be helped. Still, how did you find my house so easily?”
“Mashiro-san told me. I was going to contact you beforehand, but I thought it might be more fun to surprise you. Just my way of…”
“A surprise, huh? I didn’t expect you to be so playful, Reo. But I’m really happy about it. I actually like surprises.”
Reo flashed a smile like a child who had just pulled off a successful prank. I was genuinely pleased that he came to visit me as a surprise to cheer me up.
With plenty of time before school, I invited Reo inside.
As we entered the living room, Mai, sprawled out on the sofa, reacted.
“Hey, big brother, who was it?”
“A friend from school came to check on me. I thought we’d chat a bit before school starts.”
“Hm? Your friend?”
Mai, who had been facing the TV, turned over to look at us. As soon as she noticed Reo, she sat up straight.
“Whoa, your friend!?”
Though her words were almost the same as before, Mai’s voice was high-pitched, and her black eyes blinked rapidly as she stared at Reo.
Clearly flustered, Mai hurriedly stood up and whispered in my ear.
“B-big brother… who is this handsome guy…?”
“I told you, he’s my friend. You don’t have to be that surprised.”
“I-I can’t help it! I didn’t know you had such a refreshing, handsome friend!”

It was true that the only friends Mai knew of were my delinquent buddies, Kogane and Obayashi. They were the complete opposite of a refreshing handsome guy; they had scary faces and rough looks.
In contrast, Reo was a beautiful boy, like a prince. Until now, I had only associated with delinquents besides Mashiro, so it was no wonder Mai was surprised to learn I was close to such a refreshing, handsome guy.
Flustered, Mai ran her fingers through her hair to tidy it up, then stood in front of Reo, shyly fidgeting as she greeted him.
“H-h-hello! I’m Mai, his little sister. Thank you for being friends with my big brother!”
—
“Nice to meet you. I’m Rei Kizaki. You’re Ryusuke’s sister, Mai, right? It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
Rei responded to Mai’s awkward greeting with a refreshing smile.
Mai, blushing at his handsome face, was left in a daze, and noticing this, Rei smiled softly and narrowed his eyes.
“Is there something wrong with my face?”
“Ah!? Um… n-nothing at all…”
As Rei smiled gently at her, Mai’s face turned even redder, and she was captivated.
Thinking it was rare to see Mai so flustered, I had Rei sit on the sofa. I then headed to the kitchen to start pouring coffee.
Since it was a special occasion, I wanted Mai to get along with Rei. It wouldn’t be bad for them to chat over coffee. With that thought, I decided to brew some.
