Chapter 83. A Little Detour
Since Haimura lives in the exact opposite direction, I walk home with just Masahiro.

We had been so engrossed in our discussion about the cultural festival that the sky outside was already painted with the hues of sunset. Plus, with the meeting with Hinano, I ended up coming home later than usual.
“It’s gotten pretty late, hasn’t it? Are you okay, Masahiro?”
“Yeah. I didn’t have any particular plans today, and more than that, we needed to finalize the design for the maid outfits for the festival. Thanks to Ryusuke, we managed to settle on a design smoothly, so I feel relieved.”
“Your class is really putting in the effort, huh? Our class just finally discussed and decided on our presentation today.”
“I think that’s still pretty early! What’s your class planning to do?”
“We’re also going with food, planning to serve sweets. We’re going to impress everyone with delicious treats, so look forward to it!”
“Are you going to be the one making the sweets for the festival?”
“I’m in charge of coming up with the recipes. Of course, I’ll be making them too, and the whole class will work together.”
“So you’re the leader in charge of cooking. That’s bound to be delicious!”
Masahiro knows well about my cooking skills, and her expression brightened with excitement.
I want to do my best to serve up some wonderful sweets that can meet her expectations. Masahiro’s smile makes me feel that way all over again.
“My class isn’t putting much effort into the cooking part, so it looks like we’ll be going with something simple like yakisoba. But we’re putting all our energy into the costumes!”
“Our class is the opposite; we’re not spending much on costumes. Well, we’ll make sure to look somewhat stylish, but we can’t prepare costumes as elaborate as yours, Masahiro.”
Due to the budget allocated to each class for the cultural festival, even if classes have similar themes, they end up having their own unique characteristics. That’s part of what makes the cultural festival interesting, and it’s fun to walk around the school comparing the features of each class.
“I’m really looking forward to my first cultural festival as a high school student. I can’t even imagine how amazing it’s going to be compared to middle school!”
“Yeah, the quality of the events in the gymnasium is bound to be impressive, and I’m looking forward to the light music club’s band performances too.”
“I’ve heard there will be plenty of stalls in the schoolyard as well, so I’m excited about that!”
There’s still time until the cultural festival, but both Masahiro and I can’t help but feel excited. I wonder what kind of presentations there will be, and what we should eat. Our anticipation keeps growing, showing no signs of stopping. Masahiro’s clear blue eyes sparkled as she smiled brightly.
“I’ll be serving the best sweets at the cultural festival, so you can look forward to it, Masahiro.”
“I’ll be welcoming you in an incredibly cute maid outfit too. So you better look forward to it, Master?”
“It sounds like your class is going to be flooded with Masters. I mean, with how cute you are, Masahiro, you’ll be serving in a maid outfit, right?”
“That’s not a big deal. It’s just wearing a maid outfit and offering hospitality.”
“That’s what makes it a big deal. You should be prepared for the possibility of waiting in a long line for hours on the day itself.”
“Come on, that’s an exaggeration. Rather, I think the line for Ryusuke’s special sweets will be much longer, right?”
I intend to put my all into making sweets, but with the world’s strongest beautiful girl in a maid outfit, the draw should be incredible.
In the original story, the sweets café run by the two groups had the highest sales in the academy and won the grand prize at the cultural festival, but now that Mashiro has become the pure and lovely strongest beautiful heroine, there may be changes to that development.
As expectations and anxieties about the unknown intertwine, the walk home with Mashiro passes in the blink of an eye.
“Are you sure you don’t need me to walk you to your apartment?”
“Yeah, this is fine. Thank you, Ryusuke, for coming to see me after school.”
“I couldn’t see Mashiro’s face yesterday because of a cold. Seeing you again reassures me. With the preparations for the cultural festival coming up, I wanted to see you as much as possible while I could.”
“Geez… you’re being unfair, Ryusuke. If you say something like that, of course, I’m going to be happy.”
Mashiro’s cheeks turned red as she fidgeted with her mouth. I felt a bit embarrassed too and averted my gaze to hide it.
We should be heading back soon, but we both missed our timing to leave. Being with Mashiro is so comfortable that I find myself wanting to stay a little longer.
It seems I’m not the only one thinking that way, as Mashiro lightly pinched the sleeve of my shirt with her fingertips and looked up at me with her glistening blue eyes.
“It looks like you don’t want to go home, Mashiro?”
“Hehe… did you notice? I want to be with you a little longer, Ryusuke.”
“When you say that, Mashiro, it has too much impact.”
“I’m a genius at making Ryusuke’s heart race, you know?”
Mashiro smiled mischievously before tugging at my sleeve. It felt like she was pleading for us to go out and play, and her innocent cuteness made my mouth curl into a smile.
“Ryusuke, how about we take a little detour on the way home? Shall we do something fun together?”
“Maybe I’ll be a little bad this time. I’ve been going straight home lately without any detours.”
“Hehe. It sounds like it’ll be a fun night, doesn’t it, Master?”
In the past, it was common for Mashiro and me to go out alone at night, but recently I had been serious about heading home after school. It might be nice to take a detour with Mashiro until a little later this time.
I began walking beside Mashiro, who was humming a tune, under the sky that was starting to darken.
