EP.12 Loyalty Training (2)
Loyalty training is military training aimed at protecting the regime.
This training had one feature that set it apart from other military training: it controlled the leave and overnight leave of all soldiers.
Then, why are soldiers’ going out and staying out overnight controlled?
This is because the purpose is to immediately deploy loyal units when troops are needed in an emergency.
Therefore, units participating in the loyalty training had to maintain full strength regardless of the reason.
As a result, the soldiers of the units mobilized for loyalty training had a very difficult time.
They received intensive protest suppression training every day at the parade ground.
This was because the ostensible pretext for this loyalty training was to prepare for suppressing protests.
“Like, loud!”
“Loyalty training! Loyalty training!”
Veteran soldiers prepared to suppress the uprising, armed with large clubs and shields.
The new soldiers jeered at their seniors, throwing stones and other objects at them.
“Wow~”
“advance!”
The riot police soldiers slowly advanced toward the newcomers who were silently acting as protesters, while being hit by a hail of rocks.
Then the whistle blew.
Beep!
“charge!”
As the riot police soldiers charged, shouting, the protesters began to scatter like ants.
The veterans chased after the fleeing juniors, knocked them down, and then swung their clubs mercilessly.
Naturally, countless soldiers were injured during the training.
The soldiers’ fatigue and irritation regarding training were also higher than usual.
That said, there were few who voiced their dissatisfaction.
‘We’re only able to remain in the capital and receive loyalty training, but if we get transferred to the front lines, we’ll have to worry about life and death.’
Of course, some brave souls voiced their discontent among themselves about the loyalty training.
Mainly, it was the junior officers who followed Lee Seong-jun.
“Loyalty training in a country at war? The people above are out of their minds.”
“I wanted to shoot all the guys standing on the podium, but I held back, senior.”
Although voices of discontent about loyalty training were seething within the military, the military’s upper echelons did not specify a time limit for the training period.
The end of the loyalty training, they thought, was when the empire’s political victory over China became clear.
If only he could obtain the surrender of Nanjing, his popularity would recover and he would be able to deploy sufficient troops around the capital to protect his regime.
The military regime intended to continue the loyalty training until then.
So what if the war with China becomes protracted?
Park Han-jin and the cabinet he controls had their own plan B in mind for this.
That’s right, it was a peace negotiation with Germany in the middle.
The South Korean government contacted the German ambassador to Korea, Herbert von Diekrsen, and hinted at the possibility that Berlin might mediate the Sino-Korean war.
Germany has responded positively to this.
That’s understandable, since Germany considers both China and South Korea important trading partners and did not want the conflict between Pyongyang and Nanjing to continue.
As Germany showed its initiative, the three-party negotiations centered around Berlin were progressing smoothly as of November.
As a result, the Park Han-jin administration had no concerns about dragging out the loyalty training.
‘The war will be over in 10 weeks at most. The soldiers will be dissatisfied until then, but that’s something that always happens when you work.’
The Army really thought so.
As a result, the intensity of loyalty training showed no signs of decreasing with the passage of time.
Rather, the intensity has increased.
“From now on, we will conduct training for emergency deployment. Since we must complete the movement of troops within the time reported to the Army, the daily marching speed will be 60 kilometers.”
“yes?”
It may sound crazy, but it was an order from above.
In addition to suppressing protests, the soldiers were also required to conduct mobile training for the purpose that the military’s upper echelons truly desired: “suppressing a coup.”
“Wow, what the fuck.”
The soldiers’ stress was at its peak.
Yet no one said that the intensity of loyalty training should be adjusted.
“Loudly!”
“Loyalty training! Loyalty training!”
The soldiers screamed in anger.
And then I thought to myself.
He said that if he gets his hands on any protesters or anything else, he will kill them.
*
“It’s loyalty training.”
I was lost in thought while drinking coffee.
The reason for the loyalty training was obvious when the academy was quiet.
It was a preparatory work to mobilize troops in case of emergency.
What is that emergency?
Most likely it’s a coup d’état.
I wondered if there had been an attempted coup within the military during this period.
‘There was no such thing in the webtoon I saw.’
Even if it exists, that is something that happened 39 years ago.
Of course, it’s possible that it happened earlier, but if that’s the case, I couldn’t have not known.
It couldn’t be otherwise because I had my eyes on the members who led the 39-year-old coup.
I put down my coffee cup and called Kim Jeong-gil.
“aide.”
“Yes, General.”
“Are those security guys still hanging around?”
“It’s still the same.”
“You little leeches.”
A few days ago, we noticed that we were being followed by soldiers in plain clothes.
It was thanks to their uncreative, cut-and-dried radish heads that they knew they were soldiers.
In the military, there is only one organization that can wear plainclothes and follow high-ranking officers.
It was only the Security Service.
“It would be difficult to contact my friends directly.”
“For now, yes.”
Of course, I prepared for situations where it would be difficult to contact you.
The medium was a newspaper.
On a given day, I conveyed my thoughts to the members of the association through my editorial in the newspaper.
The method was simple.
It was a method of conveying meaning by reading only the letters in a fixed row according to the diagonal or date.
“Just in case the Security Service guys arrest our members, make sure to check their identities every day.”
“Yes. I will check with my contacts.”
Jeong Gil-i also had established a communication route with the officers of the small group, so he had enough information to confirm the identities of the officers of the unit.
“But, General.”
“Please speak comfortably.”
“What if by any chance one of the members of the organization gets arrested?”
Isn’t that obvious?
“The speed of a soldier is like that of a god.”
We need to move before our captured friend opens his mouth.
In a coup, speed is key.
If we’ve got our necks caught, we have to put a knife to their throat before they put one to our throat.
If we don’t, we all die.
“But why is that?”
“There is talk that the Security Command is investigating the officers of the correctional unit.”
“Training unit?”
The training unit is the combat unit that will be at the core of this operation.
Although the name suggests that it is a training unit, its actual strength is stronger than that of the 16th and 17th Reserve Divisions combined.
This is because there is a training tank regiment under the training division of the Irado Training Corps.
Spain painfully demonstrated how important it is to have tanks on the battlefield.
Just because it was an old tram didn’t mean it couldn’t catch people.
“yes.”
“If it’s a correctional unit, hmm.”
The training unit is a unit that gets a lot of rice cakes on their hands.
As you use various equipment, there are bound to be items that are lost, and in these units, it was customary to sell such items and share the money among the officers to cover living expenses.
It may not seem like a very good practice, but it is understandable considering the difficult salary situation of the training unit, which had difficulty receiving combat pay or travel allowance separately.
What if the Security Service guys were investigating the embezzlement case in the correctional unit?
‘The members of the club that I tried so hard to persuade might get caught.’
I realized that the Security Service guys were seeing me as a greater threat than I thought.
Are you investigating friends who are only superficially friendly with you?
What does that mean?
He’s looking at me as a target for attention.
“owner.”
“Yes, General.”
“We need to move up our schedule a bit.”
Whether playing a game or fighting, there’s something people always say.
Player wins.
Of course, there are counterexamples, such as the Japanese Empire that attacked Pearl Harbor, but if you think about it carefully, those are not wrong examples.
Why would a weight class like Japan fight the United States for a year on equal footing?
It’s possible, because we fought cowardly and made our noses bleed.
Me too.
I, too, had no intention of waiting for the Security Service to put a knife to my throat.
“When will the promotion review for each military officer be completed?”
“I think it’s December 9th.”
“Then, it would be better to carry out the operation during the 8 days when the promotion evaluation is held.”
I decided to target the moment when each army commander vacated his unit.
If the unit commander had not been present, our side’s senior officers and junior officers could have easily taken over the unit.
“That sounds good.”
It’s a shame that we can’t discuss the plan in detail with the brains of the members of the council, but it couldn’t be helped.
In times of emergency, you have no choice but to improvise.
I informed the officers of the unit through a newspaper editorial that I had decided to carry out a coup.
“The general whispered to the stars.”
