I Will Stage A Coup D’état - Chapter 145

EP.145 Berlin Blockade (1)
The fascists and imperialists who had started the colonial war were in a dilemma.
If we were to resume the battle, we would have to be mindful of the United States, and if we continued to drag out the fight, the people who had raised their expectations through agitation would not be able to stay still.
At such times, the fascists and imperialists had only one option:
That was the ‘behind-the-scenes slander theory’ that Germany’s Junkers showed.
“My fellow citizens, we have been stabbed in the back.”
However, this does not mean that the United States was targeted.
If you stab the owner of the water, the United States, you won’t get the money you deserve.
The fascists and imperialists pointed to the Soviet Union, which gave force to the resolution condemning colonial wars, as the culprit behind it.
“Bolsheviks all over the world have openly revealed through this resolution their intention to destroy the old order of the European empires. Why? Because in this way our country will be destroyed and the Communist Party will be victorious.”
This is how the young French leader Pierre de Léotard faced the crisis head on.
Churchill also stood on the podium without hesitation.
“The British Empire has been struck from behind by the Reds. The tolerance of our society, which believed that the Reds were part of the community, gave them a chance. If it had not been for their betrayal, the Empire would have won the war. We have been robbed of our rightful victory!”
Only by shifting responsibility can one extend one’s regime and continue to hold power.
This was something Churchill did a lot during World Wars I and II.
As expected from an experienced man, Churchill deftly shifted the blame onto the Reds.
The ‘backstage slander’ theory of the two fascist, imperialist countries was also used in Belgium and the Netherlands.
Then, throughout the free world, angry cries began to ring out to find the commies who had stabbed the colonial empires in the back.
“Find out the traitors who sympathized with the communists!”
There was one man who rose up in response to this angry voice.
It was Joseph McCarthy.
Born in 1908 in rural Wisconsin, the poor Irish youth seized the opportunity to punch high in this case.
‘If I just take a few more steps, I too will be part of the mainstream of this country.’
McCarthy wanted a seat that held real power in the hands of the nation, not a regular senator.
If it could get the public’s attention and opinion, there was nothing it couldn’t do.
McCarthy immediately transformed himself into an anti-communist fighter.
“I have in my hand a list of government and scientific communists!”
Of course, McCarthy had no such thing.
McCarthy simply doggedly tested those who had different ideologies from his, and then threw those who failed into the grave.
But the public thought McCarthy was working hard to root out commies.
“McCarthy is the stalwart shield of the United States!”
As McCarthy began to run wild in the United States, Britain and France responded again.
“Look at this. There were communists hiding in America too. The Soviet Union had the power to manipulate the free world from behind the scenes, so this mess is happening. We have to root out the communists too!”
Fifth column hunting movements also took place in colonial empires.
Britain and France were even more excited when they discovered the Cambridge Five, the ‘real reds’, in the process.
“Look at this, this. There are communists swarming even in the heart of the country.”
When the free world unanimously attacked the Soviet Union and the communists, Stalin could no longer tolerate it.
“No, the Americans prepared that resolution, so why are you picking on us? Who told you to fight that fucking colonial war?”
The flames of the Cold War, which had been quiet for a while, suddenly flared up.
Stalin feared that if he remained silent, the free world would find an excuse to attack them.
Before that, we needed to show them that the Federation was formidable.
“Blockade West Berlin.”
“yes?”
“I’m telling you to squeeze the testicles of those Western bastards until they scream!”
In December 1948, a single order from the Secretary General initiated the historic blockade of West Berlin.
As things turned out, McCarthyism gained further momentum.
“Now, those commies are making threats outright!”
McCarthy and the public opinion he led ran wild, demanding a hard-line response from the Soviet Union.
The Truman administration, which had been trying to maintain a state of confrontation with the Soviet Union, was put in an awkward position.
“Have you tried contacting Moscow?”
“I am not receiving any calls.”
Dean Acheson added that he believed Stalin was deliberately avoiding contact.
“This is driving me crazy.”
If things continued this way, a head-on collision with the Soviet Union was inevitable.
Of course, the US had nukes so they wouldn’t lose to the communists, but if millions of people were killed, it would be tantamount to defeat for the regime.
Truman knew it too.
“What does the military think?”
General Lucius Dubignon Clay, Commander-in-Chief of the American Military Government in Germany, proposed sending a convoy of recoilless guns and combat engineers by land.
For the US military to illegally cross Soviet-occupied territory would be tantamount to a fight.
The president was appalled by this proposal.
“I’ll pretend I didn’t hear that offer.”
Secretary of Defense James Forrestal and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Omaha Bradley proposed an evacuation of West Berlin.
“It’s a city in the middle of nowhere. It’s impossible for us to maintain it.”
Officials also agreed to this.
Meanwhile, some people expressed this opinion.
“It seems like the Korean region is not under lockdown, so how about bringing in supplies through the Korean side?”
That was something that Koreans were unlikely to agree to.
Korea has sided with the United States on most issues, but has always taken a step back when it comes to issues where the two sides clash sharply.
“The State Department should try it.”
“All right.”
The President was inwardly despairing that he had no choice but to give up Berlin.
If things went that way, McCarthy’s voice was sure to get louder.
Surely the White House will treat you like a red second platoon that sold out Berlin.
Just thinking about it made me feel like a fire was going off inside me.
“Your Majesty. While we’re at it, how about we launch a large-scale airlift operation?”
As Truman was struggling, the military came up with a new proposal.
“Shall we airlift supplies from the sky?”
The military’s proposal sounded like a godsend to a president who had no viable alternative.
It was because the problem could be solved without war.
But Clay didn’t add any explanation.
He omitted the mention of mobilizing bombers and fighters to suppress any interference from Soviet forces during air operations.
“If possible, prepare right now.”
Truman accepted Clay’s offer.
The U.S. military, which had been wavering over the Berlin issue, was also pleased when the government decided to take a hard-line approach.
They believed that if the Soviets attacked, they could just ‘bomb’ the commies to death.
“We have nukes.”
The source of America’s confidence in being able to go forward strongly was its powerful bomber force and nuclear weapons.
On December 15, 1948, the U.S. Air Force began Operation Air Bridging, supplying supplies to Berlin.
“Notice to all C-54 pilots worldwide: Fly to Germany immediately.”
Carpet bombing, no, General Curtis LeMay, the master of airborne combat, took command of this operation.
“Whether it’s airdropping or bombing, if you just drop something from the sky, wouldn’t the person who does it best be the expert?”
It wasn’t a wrong logic.
Within two days of the blockade, the United States began dropping supplies on Berlin.
The first day’s supply was 82 tons.
In a situation where more than 2,500 tons (excluding occupied Korean territory) were needed per day, this amount of supplies was inadequate to say the least.
The Soviet Union laughed when it heard this news.
“Just let them pass through the airspace. They’ll just collapse on their own.”
Stalin believed that the West would come to the table in excruciating pain.
However, the West’s resolve and determination were greater than Stalin had imagined.
After a week, America’s transport capacity began to rapidly increase to 500 tons per day and then 750 tons per day.
Even Stalin was taken aback by the magnitude of the increase.
“No, you’re going to feed a whole city by airlift? Does that make sense?”
That makes sense.
The reason no country has ever thought of doing something like that is because they have no money.
The United States has become such a money-hungry national power.
“Comrade Secretary, we can’t just leave this alone. If by any chance they manage to keep the city supplied by air, we’ll be a laughing stock.”
Stalin wasn’t unaware of that either.
It was a matter of face.
If the communist hegemon and the leader of the free world were to clash, and the Soviet Union were to lose, it would be difficult to guarantee future momentum.
The Soviet Union was already at a disadvantage in terms of objective national power.
“Comrade, if you give the order to shoot down the transport aircraft, our Red Army will launch an interception operation.”
Stalin was irritated by the military’s tough talk.
“What kind of crazy stuff are you talking about now!”
Shooting down a transport plane would mean nothing more than starting an all-out war with the United States.
Why does the Federation have to fight for its life again?
These guys didn’t even seem to remember when World War II ended.
The generals all kept silent.
The secretary glared at them one by one and then tapped the desk with his pen.
“War is absolutely unacceptable. Let me make that clear.”
The generals nodded with stern expressions at the secretary’s decision.
If that’s what the secretary said, then I just had to follow it.
“First of all, let’s quietly send the guy who came up with the idea of blockading Berlin to the Gulag.”
Wasn’t that something you gave yourself?
But no one raised an objection.
This problem could have been solved if someone had taken responsibility instead of Stalin and gone to the Gulag.
People began discussing ways to deal with the situation as if nothing had happened.
