EP.15 12. 8 Military Coup (3)
At 6:30 p.m., a military vehicle carrying General Oh Gwang-se arrived at Jinwoldam Fairy in Daebang-dong.
Lieutenant General Oh Gwang-se, commander of the 1st Guards Division, expected his junior, Lee Seong-jun, to arrive early and, out of consideration for him, arrived at the meeting place 30 minutes early so that he would not have to wait.
“Welcome, General Oh.”
Madam Jeong, whom I often saw, came out to greet me.
“This general?”
“He hasn’t arrived yet. He said he might be a little late because he has some work to do, and he asked me to take good care of General Oh.”
“Haha. This general, that guy. If the guest you invited is like that, what am I supposed to do?”
“Still, why don’t you go inside and play some accompaniment?”
“No. Lee Seong-jun won’t be that late.”
Oh Gwang-se insisted on waiting in the garden.
At that time, Lieutenant General Ha Jung-yeon, the Director of the Army Operations Bureau, discovered Oh Gwang-se as he entered the Jinwoldam Fairy.
“No, brother. If you’re here, you should stay in your room. Why are you out in the cold?”
“Lee Seong-jun said he was going to be a little late, so I’m here to wait.”
“Brother, I can’t wait outside because it’s cold. Let’s go in first.”
“Yeah, yeah.”
“Generals, come this way.”
Madam Jeong guided the generals into the inner annex.
The annex was lavishly decorated with royal cuisine.
The generals were astonished by this magnificent banquet.
“Lee Seong-jun, you’ve prepared your legs to look like they’re going to break.”
“Ha. Oh, there are things that are strange. Lee Seong-jun is that friend, he’s a friend who doesn’t even show his face when I call him to hang out, but I don’t know why he’s spending money on something like this. I, it’s so strange that I got an invitation from Lee Seong-jun today.”
“I guess it’s because I’ve been paying a lot of attention to myself lately.”
“That’s true.”
“Let’s sit down first.”
The generals sat down, laughing heartily.
Young women came into the room and took the generals’ coats.
“Brother, would you like a drink?”
“When Lee Seong-jun comes, let’s go together.”
“My brother said that person is too stubborn, that’s the problem.”
“But please have a drink, guys.”
At Madame Jeong’s gesture, the young women sat down next to the generals.
“Oh, right.”
“Brother. Let’s have just half a drink.”
Oh Gwang-se also didn’t want to just sit and wait, so he decided to just have a sip of alcohol.
While the generals were sitting in the palace waiting for the guest of honor who would never arrive, Colonel Jeong Sun-jin, the chief of staff of the Security Command, received a strange report while on duty.
“What? What do you mean the military police guys are suddenly moving?”
“There was talk of sending a military police unit to investigate the accident.”
“We haven’t heard of any accidents, so what are you talking about? Okay, I understand.”
Jeong Sun-jin picked up the phone, looking puzzled.
“Genial police station. Oh, Colonel Yoo? I’m the chief of staff of the Security Command. Okay. What do you mean when you say the military police station dispatched a company? An accident investigation? Did you receive that report from below? Got it. Okay. Good work.”
Jeong Sun-jin hung up the phone and looked embarrassed.
In the meantime, the adjutant received a call and handed over the receiver he was holding.
“Sir, I am the Commander of the Army Security Forces.”
“Ah, General Chae. It’s the Chief of Staff. Yes. Yes? The Criminal Investigation Division and the Planning Office from the Army Department have been mobilized? Company troops? Understood.”
The strange behavior of the military police, who are always chasing their own tails.
Jeong Sun-jin knew that the situation was serious.
It was a clear sign of something unusual for military police to move in units without reporting.
“Sir, what should we do?”
“First, locate the commander and tell him to come to headquarters as soon as possible.”
“All right.”
Jeong Sun-jin returned the call.
“The military police chief’s office. Oh, sir? This is the chief of staff of the security command. The military police are moving in for an accident investigation that has no information. Yes. Yes. Please take action quickly.”
Jeong Sun-jin put down the phone and became lost in thought.
The military police are moving while covering the eyes and ears of the military police chief.
Ring ring.
Before I could continue my thoughts, the phone rang.
“This is the chief of staff of the Security Command. Yes. Yes. Yes? A company from the 22nd Military Police Brigade was dispatched? Understood.”
A phone call from Colonel Seok Dong-chul, the commander of the 22nd Military Police Division, put a stop to his last doubts.
I can’t say for sure, but I’m pretty sure it’s a coup.
But how?
Who led the coup?
Jeong Sun-jin thought for a moment and then picked up the phone.
“Director of the Inspectorate. Oh, I’m the Chief of Staff. How is Lee Seong-jun’s whereabouts? He’s currently walking around the city? Please keep an eye on him.”
Jeong Sun-jin put the phone down.
If he was going to lead a coup, it would have been normal to set up a CP by now and prepare to get things done.
But Lee Seong-jun’s actions weren’t like that.
Then, is it not Lee Seong-jun but someone else?
In any case, there was a need to hurry up and respond.
“Connect the embassy instead of the army.”
Jeong Sun-jin decided to report the entire situation to the highest authority in the country as soon as possible.
It was 7:15 in the evening.
*
7:00 p.m. at Taechang Stadium in Pyongyang.
When we arrived at Taechang Stadium in plainclothes, the military police officers who had already arrived held up oak leaves.
I nodded and then had Captain Mo hand out the mission plans he had prepared in advance to the officers.
After the distribution of the plan was finished, I gave a brief lecture to the officers.
“Gentlemen. Today, we begin the revolution. In the ‘process of revolution,’ there may be bloodshed, and some may die or be injured. However, all of these sacrifices are made out of loyalty to the fatherland. So do not hesitate and act boldly. The rise and fall of the empire is in our hands.”
I had no illusions that the ‘determination to save the country’ would be glorified.
No matter how you package it, a coup is a coup.
But it didn’t matter.
I don’t know about distant future generations, but I write textbooks for my time.
At least while I’m open, it’ll be the 12.8 Military Revolution.
That was enough.
After the instruction was finished, the officers dispersed in unison.
Since I had finished my work at Taechang Stadium, I was also planning to leave for the training camp.
Knock knock.
At that moment, a military police officer came running toward me with a pale expression.
“General.”
“What’s wrong? Why are you looking so pale?”
“The military police chief has issued an order for all troops to return to their original positions.”
“Oh, General?”
Oh Jung-gu’s reaction was faster than expected.
Of course, it was not unreasonable for Oh Joong-gu, sitting in his office in the Army Department, to react immediately.
“What should we do?”
“Let’s crush them. If we push ahead with the troop dispatch anyway, Oh Jung-gu won’t be able to do anything.”
Although the order was to ignore the Provost Marshal’s order, the officer standing before me was a member of an excellent coup force.
“I will accept it.”
I dispatched Captain Lee Seong-myeong and got into the priest’s car driven by Captain Ma.
And on the way to the training camp, I thought.
‘Even so, the time that Oh Joong-goo started responding was too fast.’
The culprit must be the Security Service.
Of course, it was impossible to completely avoid the eyes of the Defense Security Command, a military intelligence agency.
Even Chun Doo-hwan was able to easily foil the coup because he was the commander of the security command. If he had been the commander of a frontline division, he would not have been able to do anything.
I was thinking about it and called from a house in front of Taechang Stadium.
There was a risk that the Security Service might be eavesdropping, but for now, understanding the situation came first.
“Connect the training unit. Oh, is that Colonel Baek? Sir, how’s the dispatch going? Did they send everyone? Got it.”
I hung up the phone.
If the plainclothes unit had been mobilized, the military police chief could not stop us with the troops he could immediately mobilize.
The problem is the Guard Division.
Although the Guards Division commander was lured away, the division was not completely neutralized.
‘For now, neutralizing the embassy comes first, before those guys.’
I didn’t have the desire to do everything at once.
If you try to do everything, you’ll accomplish nothing.
Wasn’t that the case even for Hitler, who once had almost all of Europe under his control?
The car arrived at the entrance to the prison camp in ten minutes.
At the entrance to the unit, there were key officers, including Chief of Staff Baek Dong-seok. Instead of saluting, Colonel Baek Dong-seok held up a maple leaf and spoke.
“General, welcome to the training unit.”
After greeting them, I headed to the training unit headquarters under Baek Dong-seok’s guidance.
From now on, the Imperial Army’s training unit was the core unit of the rebel army commanded by Lee Seong-jun.
As we entered the neatly organized situation room, a huge map of Pyongyang and tactical symbols for each unit prepared in advance were displayed in a jumble.
This was the ‘war situation map’ that the correctional unit had now grasped.
The most threatening of all, of course, was the huge Guards Division coiled up to the east of the capital.
If the strongest enemy they faced was the Military Police, then the biggest enemy they had to overcome was the Guards Division.
“Are you in contact with the 16th and 17th Reserve Divisions?”
“There is nothing unusual. They are also just waiting for the general’s order to deploy. I will connect the call.”
Knock knock.
Soon, an officer on the phone picked up the phone and handed me the call.
“Colonel Gil? I’m Lee Seong-jun. Dispatch the unit immediately. Okay. That’s it.”
I have begun a full-scale mobilization of troops to turn this country upside down.
Now it was time to raise the flag of rebellion and overthrow the country.
