EP.157 The Italian War (3)
On June 25, 1950, the first day of the Italian War, the United Nations Security Council met.
“I appeal to the distinguished representatives of each country. The war that has broken out in Italy this time is an unprecedented and serious incident since the founding of the United Nations. If we allow the illegal regime to overthrow the Kingdom of Italy, a member of the United Nations, by force, the international order that has been established with difficulty since World War II will be shaken to its roots. We must act resolutely before the principles that were established at the cost of tens of millions of blood are shaken.”
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Warren Robinson Austin criticized northern Italy in a strong tone.
To this, Soviet Ambassador Yakov Malik responded sarcastically.
“It should be remembered that the UN member states planned a preemptive strike against the de facto government of Northern Italy, which was recognized by the Eastern Bloc. Northern Italy was merely taking self-defense measures after enduring endless provocations by imperialists and fascists.”
The countries just watched the war of words between the two sides.
After a heated exchange of words, the United States proposed a resolution demanding the withdrawal of the Northern Italian People’s Republic.
“It is clear that Northern Italy is destroying the peace of the Italian Peninsula. Therefore, we request a resolution to immediately cease hostilities and withdraw their troops north of the military demarcation line.”
“The Soviet Union opposes the United States resolution.”
The Soviet Union immediately exercised its right of veto.
With the permanent members of the UN Security Council in a standoff, the Security Council is effectively paralyzed.
“You red bastards, you’re being so blatant.”
The United States was mindful of the possibility that the United Nations could be neutralized.
On June 27, at a NATO meeting in Brussels, the United States requested the mobilization of NATO forces.
But unexpectedly, NATO member states hesitated to intervene.
It was because of the formidable military power and nuclear weapons deployed by the Soviet Union in Central Europe.
The fear that this war might lead to a world war made the member states reluctant to take action.
The fact that Britain and France were unable to take active action due to internal problems also played a role.
NATO countries have formally pledged to cooperate, but not a single one has said it will immediately commit troops or supplies in large numbers.
Britain and France told Washington to buy them time to regroup.
“In the end, we are the only ones who can step forward right now.”
The problem was that the US military did not have enough power.
After 1945, due to continued disarmament, the US Army did not have enough strength.
For the US forces in Europe, it was difficult to even guarantee Germany’s security.
Even if we had hastily pulled up troops from the mainland and sent them to Europe, and drafted US troops from Europe, the number of troops that could be mobilized at one time was only one division.
“First, move the 2nd Armored Division to Italy.”
The 2nd Armored Division of the 7th Army stationed in Germany was selected as the emergency force to be dispatched to Italy.
Even as the American army rushed to enter the war, the Italian front was pushed back.
On June 28, 1950, King Umberto II of Italy quickly fled to Taranto and then, perhaps embarrassed, returned to Naples to give a speech to the nation.
“Citizens, rest assured. The Italian army is holding the front without wavering. Trust our government and concentrate on your work.”
People believed that the king remained in Rome and gave speeches.
“Your Majesty seems to be in Rome too. I wonder if it will be okay.”
Meanwhile, the Italian People’s Army was steadily advancing south toward Rome.
The pace of advance was much faster than the Italian army had anticipated.
The size of the invading force was larger than the Kingdom of Italy had expected, and the Italian army was unable to defend its front lines at all.
Because the front line was collapsing so quickly, the Italian command was unable to make sound decisions.
In the midst of the chaos, irresponsible orders were given out in large numbers.
“Your Majesty, are you really going to blow it up?”
“If we continue like this, the capital will fall to the People’s Army. Blow it up.”
On June 30, 1950, the bridges crossing the Tiber River in the capital city of Rome were blown up.
“Oh my. How are we supposed to cross the river?”
Citizens on the northern bank of the river who were trying to evacuate late were trembling in front of the collapsed bridge.
Some people crowded into a narrow area, trying to cross the river using the ruins of a collapsed bridge.
“Get out of the way! Get out of the way!”
People pushed, shoved, and trampled each other in the chaos of the chaos.
I was so desperate to get across as quickly as possible that I ignored the screams of others.
Hundreds of people drowned during this horrific crossing.
The disaster didn’t stop there.
Four of the ten main divisions of the Italian Army were north of the Tiber.
However, the bridges were blown up earlier than planned, leaving these units isolated on the north side of the river.
Italian Prime Minister Bonomi was shocked when he heard about this situation.
“So, does that mean half of our army is neutralized?”
“Don’t worry, Your Majesty. The problem will be solved as soon as the US military intervenes.”
As the Italian military boasted, the US military quickly intervened.
From the third day of the war, the US Navy and Air Force began bombing northern Italy, and from the fifth day, some units of the 2nd Armored Division were entering Naples by transport plane.
However, it was not enough to stop the momentum of the Northern Italian forces and their allies.
On July 2, 1950, the Northern Italian People’s Army crossed the Tiber River using boats.
“Go, Your Majesty. I think it would be best for you to take refuge in Naples for a while.”
Italian Chief of Staff General Claudio Trezzani advised them to flee.
“Really, is that the only way?”
The military adviser present, Captain Bergonzoli Evi, nodded.
In this situation, the Prime Minister had no choice but to abandon Rome and flee to Naples.
A week into the war, the Kingdom of Italy lost its capital, Rome, and 40% of its troops and heavy equipment were lost.
The collapse of the Kingdom of Italy now seemed only a matter of time.

While the world was focusing on Italy, Jung was secretly using McCarthy to wield a knife against the United States.
“This guy, this guy is a communist! Qian Xuesen! This communist bastard has infiltrated our university and is stealing technology! How terrifying is this? I am even terrified that our country’s rocket technology is leaking out to the communists. Don’t you feel the same?”
“No, I really am innocent!”
“Shut up. You’re guilty. There’s evidence in my bag!”
McCarthy had a tongue that could finish a man off without evidence.
When McCarthy bit the HUAC (Un-American Activities Committee), he would summon the victim for a hearing and grind him to pieces.
“You requested a vacation from Caltech in May. Wasn’t that a ploy to pass information to China?”
“No. I’m visiting my sick father.”
“Then how come that red Waynebaum got into college on your recommendation? There’s such clear evidence, how can you deny it!”
The victims who were summoned to the hearings were often left devastated by HUAC’s attacks that tore through every last speck of dust.
In the process, if they found fault with someone, they were labeled a communist and then buried from society.
“I can’t take you anymore. You should pack your bags and leave our university.”
In this way, a significant number of Chinese scientists were driven out of the American scientific community.
The scientists who were chased out like that were kidnapped to the central government without anyone knowing.
“Ugh, ugh.”
A Chinese man with his mouth blocked struggled to say something.
The story he was trying to tell was obvious.
‘I didn’t do anything to deserve this, so please spare me.’
It was not worth listening to.
Where, do you think Jung-Jeong brought him here without knowing the target?
“pour.”
Fresh concrete was poured into the drum containing the person.
The central agents watched the scene without much interest.
The Chinese who struggled and resisted were great scientists who would leave behind numerous achievements in the future.
The man struggled desperately, but his movements became increasingly sluggish as the concrete filled in.
‘I think it was Chen Xuesen. What a shame.’
Han Yun-su, head of the Central Intelligence Agency’s External Affairs Division, looked at the dying Chinese people.
The reason why the Chinese man in front of me, Qian Xuesen, died was simple.
It was a sin to be so good at Chinese subjects.
Even if they were Europeans, I would have thought about persuading them, but I couldn’t do that with the Han Chinese.
The Han Chinese were a group that could never be assimilated because of their unique Sinocentrism.
The great genius Qian Xuesen met such a tragic end in a drum can.
When the concrete had completely hardened, Han Yoon-soo nodded.
“Put it away.”
with a plop.
A man disappeared into the Mississippi River like that.
In this way, more than 10 Chinese people who were a threat to Korea were killed.
Sometimes they would throw it wrapped in barbed wire instead of in drums.
Then, they would disappear without a trace, leaving not a trace of flesh behind.
‘If there is a threat to Korea, even Ae-ra must be eliminated.’
Jungjeong was taught to think that way.
National interest was above any ethics.
As soon as Han Yoon-soo arrived at Anga, he sent a confidential letter to his home country.
“Task 003 completed.”
There are a total of 10 targets that need to be eliminated in the future.
If they returned to China, they would be the kind of people who would greatly contribute to the development of the Republic of China or the Communist Party of China.
Among them was the name of Deng Jiaxian, who would become a key figure in China’s nuclear development.
“Sir, the next list and evidence to send to McCarthy is ready.”
“great job.”
Han Yoon-soo carefully read the evidence to be sent to McCarthy.
The evidence that Jung sent to McCarthy consisted entirely of fabricated circumstances created by observing the targets’ surroundings.
But McCarthy was a man who knew how to use such nonsense as a weapon.
With such a monster controlling American public opinion, the central government’s work could only be easy.
‘I have to move fast for the next month.’
If the operation goes on too long, the FBI might get wind of it.
Before that, all key targets had to be eliminated.
‘When we die, we will definitely go to hell.’
Han Yoon-soo thought that everyone in the palace was like that.
But someone had to do it.
Everything was for the great fatherland, Korea.
Han Yoon-soo saluted the portrait of His Majesty hanging in one corner of the house.
