EP.37 The Fall of Poland (1)
On September 1, 1939, the German Wehrmacht invaded Poland with an army of 1.5 million troops.
Poland, which had to counter this, had a force of 1.75 million active and reserve soldiers, but it was not enough to handle the offensive of a modernized German army.
“Slow down. Slow down. What you see is the afterimage of our army!”
Of course, the German army was not really an invincible mobile force of motorized troops.
Most German troops had to rely on horse-drawn carriages or walk instead of vehicles.
The driving force behind the actual German blitzkrieg was not the tanks or airplanes depicted in propaganda, but stimulants like methamphetamine that allowed people to walk for 48 hours without sleeping.
There was a high risk of turning post-war soldiers into drug addicts, but in reality, no one cared about this problem.
“What? You’re making them walk for 48 hours without sleeping? Make sure to feed the soldiers. Feed them twice.”
Rather, I was anxious to use it more once I learned of the existence of stimulants.
While the German army launched a blitzkrieg using the power of drugs, the Polish army was busy floundering in the swamp of despair.
“What can you do to stop German tanks and planes?”
Of course, Poland also had excellent tanks like the 7TP and fighters like the PZL P24.
But the quantity was too small.
No matter how great a weapon you have, if you can’t use it, it’s as good as not having one.
Unfortunately, Poland’s military industry was slow to build due to the long-running trade war during the Weimar Republic, and military modernization plans were delayed until after 1942.
To begin with, the timing of the war was the worst for Poland.
However, it is not like they were any better than the Germans in any way other than their equipment.
The officer corps was poorly qualified, and the Polish military leaders were unable to face the reality of the war.
“How can we just give up the sacred land that we regained after 150 years? We can’t give up even an inch.”
Instead of using natural obstacles such as the Vistula River, the Polish military adopted a strategy of holding the enemy back at the border and then withdrawing gradually.
The policy of defending the border with inferior forces was no different from simply handing over victory to Germany.
“Look at those ignorant Polish guys.”
The German army pushed back the Polish army with victories as originally planned.
However, that does not mean that this war went entirely according to Germany’s wishes.
On September 3, Britain and France each declared war on Germany.
“Your Excellency, Britain has also declared war.”
“I can’t believe it!”
It was an escalation into World War II that Hitler had never envisioned.
In fact, Germany was completely unprepared for a protracted war.
Oil reserves were inadequate, and ammunition could only sustain a few weeks of operations.
In such a situation, it was no wonder that Hitler was shocked to the point of fainting when he was faced with a naval blockade and an all-out war with the great powers.
There was also considerable Polish resistance there.
The Polish army, which was initially thought to be easily defeated, put up a fierce resistance and hung on to the German army.
“If Britain and France come, we can win.”
The Poles pinned all their hopes on an attack by Britain and France.
If they can hold out until the tide turns, the Polish nation will survive.
Will win.

“The fall of Poland is a done deal.”
I predicted the destruction of Poland with cold-blooded precision.
The British and French were just soul-sending bastards, so they were of little help to Poland, which was being beaten by the main German army.
What great help would those who just do a quick event with a fancy name like the Jar Offensive be able to provide?
“It is as the president said.”
I looked back at the generals of the National Salvation Military Committee.
“Masters. Let me ask you something.”
“Yes, sir.”
“After Poland falls, how far will this war escalate?”
The generals were deeply lost in thought over my question.
“Won’t it become a major war like the last World War, with the United States also participating?”
“The Soviet Union might enter the war to divide up Germany.”
The generals each expressed their thoughts.
“Then, which side should our country stand on?”
This was a test.
The guys who answered “Axis” here were going to be blocked from promotion in the future.
Behave properly.
The generals thought for a long time and then came up with an answer.
“We must side with the Soviet Union.”
Baek Dong-seok said.
Suddenly I have to side with the communists?
It was an unexpected answer.
“Master, what is the reason?”
“It’s balance.”
“balance?”
“If the Western powers defeat Germany in the future, we will likely be the next target. The only strong ally to counter them is the Soviet Union.”
“The credibility of the communists is at rock bottom.”
“Necessity will create mutual trust. Don’t commies need friends too?”
It wasn’t a wrong story.
“We have already made a non-aggression pact with the Soviet Union. I see no reason why we cannot move toward an alliance.”
“I know what you mean.”
The generals each named countries such as the United States, Britain, and France.
The reason was simple.
Since Germany can’t win, let’s join the Western powers.
That was the logic I thought of too.
However, there was one thing that held me back from readily joining the Allied Forces.
Indeed, when this war ended in victory for the Allied Forces, the question was whether Korea’s power and position in the East would be recognized.
If by any chance the Union did not recognize our rights, I would be in a difficult position.
If I decide to retreat as a dictator, my position will become unstable, and if I confront with force, it will only mean that I will fight the coalition.
It was a waste to be forced into such an uncomfortable binary choice.
So, I was thinking of trying to adjust the situation so that the West and Germany could coexist, but Baek Dong-seok gave me a new perspective.
They are commies.
Certainly, if you think about it, there was no better ally than the Soviet Union.
With the Soviet Union as an ally, which had an army as large as that of the entire West combined, there was no danger of being blackmailed by the West under any circumstances.
The problem is that the Reds are a bunch of people who can’t be trusted as allies.
What did the US do to the Soviet Union during World War II?
I fed him, clothed him, put him to bed, and even changed his diapers, but was rewarded with a cold war.
Those fucking guys.
As a victim of the Cold War, it was inevitable that they would be even more resentful of the Soviet Union.
Still, a principal was a principal and public service was public service.
I seriously considered making the Soviet Union an ally.
‘What should I do with this?’
No, there’s nothing to worry about already.
Is it really necessary to solidify the route now?
In any case, it seemed necessary to take a gander at the Soviet Union.
If the Soviet Union responds positively, we’ll slowly push ahead with it, but if not, we’ll put it aside.
As I was trying to organize my thoughts, Lee Jeong-yoon said.
“dismissal.”
“Okay, sir. Tell me.”
“How about Germany?”
No, this guy, is he saying we should side with Germany, which cut off our hands?
“Are you saying we should side with Berlin? Why?”
“Germany was thoroughly prepared for war. On the other hand, the West went into war completely unprepared. If it is a fight between the prepared and the unprepared, Germany’s victory is self-evident. How much more so is Germany’s national power not as great as Britain and France combined?”
That’s an exaggeration.
Germany’s national power is greater than that of France, but is only a distant comparison with the entire British Empire, including its Dominions.
It’s out of the question to mix the two.
This optical illusion was created because of the monstrous power of the German Empire during World War I.
At that time, Germany had the ability to collapse one side of a two-front war despite having six great powers (the United States, Britain, Russia, France, Korea, and Italy) as its enemies.
But the Germany of the moustaches was nothing more than a muscle balloon compared to the German Empire that had been preparing for war for decades.
“It hasn’t even been that many years since Germany began rearmament.”
Officially, German rearmament began in 1935.
Of course, rearmament work below the surface had been going on since the Weimar Republic era, but the large-scale rearmament work above the surface had lasted less than four years.
“But we are more prepared than Britain and France. Just wait and see. Germany will definitely defeat France.”
Several generals also nodded.
I wanted to criticize their far-fetched conclusion, but knowing that France would actually suffer for six weeks, it was difficult to say anything.
“I know what you’re saying.”
Even in this situation, it is possible to predict a German victory.
Was the afterglow left by the cripple this big?
“But let me be clear here.”
The generals straightened their backs with nervous expressions.
“Our country will never side with Germany. Do you understand what I mean?”
“Yes, sir!”
“I hope you understand. Since there’s a war going on, those who are working in the situation room should stay, and the rest should go out for a company dinner. I’ll pay for today, so let’s eat at a fancy restaurant.”
“I will accept it.”
I couldn’t spend every day thinking about war just because the war had broken out.
Sometimes you need to change your mood like this.
