EP.43 Butterfly Effect (3)
Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin was afraid.
How did all the democracies in Europe collapse in just six weeks?
The thought of the German spearhead that made that possible made my hair stand on end.
‘Now only our Federation and Germany remain in Europe.’
Who will Hitler target next?
The answer was obvious.
It’s a federation.
Stalin was not unaware of Hitler’s ambitions.
If someone was the leader of Germany, it was natural to look at them with a microscope and observe their thoughts.
And Hitler was a good subject to observe from the outside.
Just by reading his book ‘Mein Kampf’, you can understand what Hitler was thinking.
‘Right to survive.’
Hitler obviously coveted this land, the land of the Soviet Union.
Of course, there was a non-aggression pact, but there was no expectation from the beginning that Hitler would keep his credibility.
It would be reassuring if Britain stood up to Hitler, but they too were soon to make peace.
If there is no enemy behind you, it is only a matter of time before Hitler invades.
If so, preparation was necessary.
First, in order to secure as much of the buffer zone as possible, it was necessary to seize the entire Soviet Union’s sphere of influence that Hitler had promised.
The targets were the Romanian regions of Bessarabia and Bukovina, which were currently preparing for invasion, and the Baltic states.
‘Territory is a given, but I hope we can get help from other sides as well.’
A diplomatic variable was needed to break through this situation.
As he gazed intently at the world map, two countries caught his eye.
Korea and the United States.
The United States, once the isolationists had gained power, could not be of much help in curbing Hitler’s ambitions.
Still, it’s better to do something than nothing.
Korea,
It is a country with a belligerent disposition toward authoritarian regimes.
If you wanted to move, you could do so immediately.
There was also a will to form an alliance.
The problem was that Lee Seong-jun had no interest in holding hands right away.
There was only one conclusion drawn.
For now, the Federation had to figure out how to do it on its own.
‘I guess I’ll have to give up on advancing the defensive line.’
Stalin was pushing ahead with plans to move defensive lines and troops into occupied Polish territory.
It was intended to put pressure on Germany and to serve as a forward base for advancing into German territory in the event of an emergency.
However, given this situation, it was impossible not to consider deploying troops with a 1:1 battle with Germany in mind.
If the opponent was a ‘superpower’ capable of taking down France in six weeks and forcing negotiations with Britain, it would have been right for the Soviet Union to take a defensive stance.
Just as Stalin was about to issue new instructions to the military, Molotov arrived with a letter.
“Comrade Secretary. Lee Seong-jun sent a letter.”
“Lee Seong-jun?”
If you think about it, Lee Seong-jun had no reason to be surprised by Germany’s victory.
Even if Germany had defeated the Soviet Union, it would have been impossible for it to extend its power across Siberia.
‘Why did Interest react now?’
Stalin broke the seal on the letter.
“Secretary Stalin, I feel that Korea and the Soviet Union need to cooperate closely in response to the changing situation in Europe. Accordingly, I am willing to produce and supply military supplies that the Soviet Union wants in Korea. What do you think?”
He then presented tanks, field guns, and trucks as items that could be produced.
Of course, there was talk of receiving resources in return for money.
It’s a tram.
The Federation was already severely short of new tanks to field.
But were the Korean tanks any use?
The secretary summoned Voroshilov and asked about the state of the Korean army’s tanks.
Even Voroshilov burst into laughter at that.
“You mean the main battle tank of the Korean army? Koba, that thing can’t even be called a tank.”
So, does that mean we don’t have the technology to build a proper tank?
And you’re going to take a picture of the tank for me?
‘Ah. This is a suggestion.’
They wanted to share the Federation’s tank technology and their own industrial production capabilities.
Stalin understood Sungjun’s story.
Stalin showed Sung Jun’s letter to Voroshilov.
“The offer to produce tanks for us is quite appealing, but I’m a bit hesitant about transferring our technology.”
“Instead, what if we also inherit some of the technology?”
For example, Korean-made optical equipment or naval guns.
“Well, if the scales are right, there’s nothing we can’t do.”
After seeing Voroshilov’s reaction, Stalin was inclined to accept Sung Jun’s proposal.
“Okay, I get it.”
Although determined, Stalin was an extremely cautious man.
It was impossible to decide on such matters based solely on the word of Voroshilov.
I also had to listen to the stories of the relevant technicians, as if I was knocking on a stone bridge.
‘Still, it wouldn’t be so bad.’
If this cooperation becomes the cornerstone of an alliance, it will be a valuable business for the Federation as well.
Stalin calculated so.

“Zeek Heil! Zeek Heil!”
The German people’s reaction to Hitler’s arrival from his tour of Paris on June 23, 1940, was nothing short of enthusiastic.
The feat of defeating France, which the German Empire and the disabled could not defeat in four years of fighting, in just six weeks was nothing short of Napoleon’s second coming.
Even the Junkers who had been holding on firmly within the empire could not help but bow their heads to the Führer’s ‘genius’ at this time.
“Hitler succeeded in getting revenge like this.”
“For the time being, I cannot reveal this to the President.”
Even the Social Democratic Party members were chanting, “Long live His Excellency the President.”
Hitler’s approval rating exceeded 90%.
For this moment, Hitler was Germany’s god.
As soon as the Führer returned to Berlin, he quietly gathered his entourage together.
At that moment, when everyone was intoxicated with the joy of the amazing victory, Hitler said:
“When Britain surrenders, it will be time to look at our real enemy.”
“Your Excellency the President, what do you mean?”
“Now that Europe has surrendered to us, we must destroy our last remaining enemy, the Soviet Union, the den of Jewish Bolsheviks. Only then can we give vast territories to the great Germanic people.”
From the beginning, the Führer had no intention of keeping the non-aggression pact with the Soviet Union.
He was determined to launch an anti-communist crusade in the east as soon as the western problem was solved.
“Your Excellency the Führer, the Soviet Union is not an easy opponent. They are a giant with the largest army in the world.”
Foreign Minister Ribbentrop voiced his opposition in a trembling voice.
From the beginning, Ribbentrop, as the person in charge of foreign affairs, had no choice but to oppose any disruption to the state relations that were functioning normally.
“gibberish!”
Hitler reacted sharply.
“Are you talking about the Bolsheviks’ mean fighting against Finland last year and early this year? They are nothing but big guys. If our invincible Wehrmacht stands in front of the Soviet Union’s gate and kicks it with its big boots, that rotten door will fall down in an instant.”
Ribbentrop kept his mouth shut.
Hitler’s aides, who read this mood, quickly tried to please him.
“Your Excellency the Führer! If our Air Force, which won this war, steps forward, the conquest of the Soviet Union will be a breeze.”
“The armed guard is also ready, Your Majesty. We will go anywhere as soon as Your Majesty gives the order.”
Although not qualified to represent the Army, Keitel also had something to say.
“Your Excellency, OKW will diligently prepare for the operation if Your Excellency gives the order.”
Hitler was pleased with the competitive words of his entourage.
Of course, that doesn’t mean that any plans for an invasion operation were decided or established at this location.
Such a thing would require the intervention of the OKH, the Supreme Command of the Army.
Hitler was extremely offended by that fact.
What on earth do the Junkers know that they are sitting there with their hands full formulating operational plans when they don’t even recognize Manstein’s genius?
It was the same with Dunkirk.
If the President himself had not made the ‘decision’, he would have become a leader who achieved only a crippled victory like Lee Seong-jun.
Hitler was offended, but he did not ignore reality.
Soon, instructions were given to the Army High Command to prepare a plan for invading the Soviet Union.
The Army gladly accepted this order.
“France was destroyed in six weeks, but the Soviet Reds needed ten weeks.”
“The commies are just a bunch of guys who changed the name of Imperial Russia. What’s so scary about that?”
We won when we fought on two fronts, so there’s no way we wouldn’t win when we focus our efforts.
The German high command estimated that the major operations could be completed in three months at most.
Of course, that doesn’t mean we planned to just barge in without any end in sight.
Well, not this year.
Although the French campaign was over, much of the army needed rest and reorganization.
Ammunition also needed to be replenished.
It would be September if we roughly reorganized our formations and moved our units.
Then the timing was not good for invading the Soviet Union.
“It’s September in Rasputitsa, and winter is just around the corner, so next year would be a good time to invade.”
The Germans calculated that a suitable time for invasion would be roughly between May and June 1941.
Detailed plans and troop sizes will need to be slowly refined over several months, but the general outlines have been established.
The size of the invading force was approximately 160 divisions.
It was on a larger scale than the invasion of France.
The seeds of the largest invasion operation in human history, Barbarossa, sprouted months early.
