I Will Stage A Coup D’état - Chapter 54

EP.54 Under the water (1)
The Great War that broke out again in Europe immediately captured the world’s attention.
“If the Germans had invaded the Soviet Union, the outcome would have been obvious.”
Anglo-American politics expected that the Soviet Union would be defeated in a short period of time.
“Even France, the number one military power in Europe, was brought to its knees in just six weeks, so how long can the communists who run similar countries hold out? It would be a miracle if they could hold out for 10 weeks at a time.”
In this cold atmosphere, one person stepped forward.
It was U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt.
Roosevelt was very sorry that the isolationists had prevented Germany from taking over Europe.
To him, the news that war had broken out between Germany and the Soviet Union was like a revelation from God.
This was the last opportunity to emasculate the United States’ most threatening enemy.
“We have wasted too many opportunities. We have watched free nations be destroyed by Hitler. Now the last nation capable of standing up to Hitler has begun the fight. Are we going to stand by and watch? If we give up this fight, we are giving Hitler permission to monopolize the eastern shores of the Atlantic.”
Roosevelt called in leading Republicans and tried to change their minds in some way.
But the seeds didn’t even work.
“Mr. President, we do not want to just leave Hitler alone. However, the other party is a hegemonic power that has unified Europe. We do not have any proper allies, and if we touch Germany without reason, our companies will suffer serious damage.”
“Is there really a need to touch Germany? No matter how greedy Hitler is, he doesn’t have the ability to cross the Atlantic. Why don’t we just tolerate Germany’s domination of Europe and get along well?”
There was strong opposition from both isolationists and pro-Germanists.
“This country was not attacked by Germany, so why should we fight them and shed blood? Mr. President, remember, there are 30 million ethnic Germans living in this country.”
The president couldn’t help but feel more troubled.
Now is the golden opportunity to check the Nazis, but they are tied down at home and cannot move.
Rather, if Britain had held out, they would have made excuses to help them and created room for maneuver.
I wondered how things could have gotten so messed up.
“It’s stuffy.”
While Roosevelt was lost in thought, the FBI received some suspicious mail.
“What are these guys doing again? Gwangmyeonghoe?”
I tried to just laugh it off because it was a letter with a name that seemed like it would appear in a conspiracy theory, but what was written inside was definitely not funny.
“What is all this?”
Inside, there were piles of attacks on pro-Nazi groups, including anti-state rhetoric, treason, and corruption.
Even if you only look at the secret conversation records that are difficult for anyone but an insider to know, this was real.
“Report to the director.”
FBI Director Edgar Hoover recognized the value of these documents as soon as he saw them.
“This went well.”
A weapon has been prepared to sweep away the troublesome Nazis in our country.
Hoover immediately met privately with the President.
“So there’s a way to wipe out all the Nazi groups in the country at once?”
“Yes, Your Majesty.”
Hoover reported the suspicious documents to the President, suspecting their source to the Soviet Union.
To begin with, there was only one country on Earth that was cornered by a German invasion.
‘The Soviet Union.’
As much as I resented the idea of uppity reds trying to influence American national decision-making, I couldn’t emotionally push this document away.
“You may not like it, but if we use the communist data, we can definitely deal with the Nazis at home.”
“So, we’ll wipe out the Nazi groups with this. What next?”
Hoover rolled his eyes slyly.
“Why not start by linking up those isolationists with Nazi ties?”
Then, everyone will keep quiet.
It was an unacceptable practice in a democratic country, but these were extraordinary times.
‘If we allow the Nazis to win, the future of this country is bleak.’
For the sake of the future security of the United States, it was necessary to overlook some flaws.
“Director.”
“Yes, Your Majesty.”
“I’ll give you one week. You can wipe out all the Nazis in that time.”
“Don’t worry.”
At around the same time, former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was also struggling with how to influence the war against the Soviet Union.
‘I would support not only the communists but even the devil of hell, if only they could defeat Hitler.’
The problem was that not many people agreed with Churchill’s logic.
“While we’re at it, let’s watch the Reds and Germanic pigs die and eat some popcorn. Whichever one of them wins, the British Empire won’t suffer any losses.”
People were not interested in a war of annihilation between Germany and the Soviet Union.
The fact that the last war ended in ‘honorable peace’ rather than defeat also had a major impact.
Since we were not a defeated country, I didn’t really feel a strong desire for revenge.
Only the Communist Party of Britain supported Churchill’s argument.
‘As I live, I’ve come to realize that I sometimes receive support from communists. It’s something you only see if you live long enough.’
Churchill wandered around trying to change the minds of the British people.
“In the past, we, Britain, agreed to an honorable peace by concluding the Treaty of Amiens with Napoleon. But what was the result? During the time we gave him, Napoleon grew stronger and reorganized his Grande Armée to conquer the continental countries. Will you repeat the same mistake this time? What will you do when Hitler conquers the Soviet Union and breaks the honorable peace?”
Everyone could feel the logic of what Churchill was trying to say.
Germany is an untrustworthy opponent, like Napoleon.
To allow such an opponent to emerge as the sole ruler of Europe would be to wait for a knife to be put to one’s throat.
Churchill visited more than 20 places a day, urging the British people to stand up to Germany.
If they could not fight directly, they appealed to the Soviet Union to at least provide them with weapons.
“Oh my, that guy has become a communist too.”
I could endure such abuse.
Churchill’s forced march soon had its effect.
“What the fat man said is not entirely wrong. Now is the only chance to take down Hitler, so how can we just sit back and watch?”
“If, as Mr. Gallipoli said, Hitler destroys the Soviet Union and then threatens to break the ‘honorable peace’, what are we to do? Rather than entrust our fate to an untrustworthy swindler, wouldn’t it be better to do something?”
At first, these voices did not reach the political world.
It was just a rumor going around among some gentlemen in high society.
However, in June, as the German army began to show signs of weakness, the British government also began to look at options for providing material support.
Germany also sensed this change in attitude of the Anglo-American governments.
It’s not that the Nazis didn’t have sympathizers overseas.
As soon as Reinhard Heydrich, the head of the German State Security Headquarters, learned of this, he went to see the Führer.
“Your Excellency the President! The tone of the West is about to change with intervention.”
“You came now?”
Hitler was cynical.
If you wanted to do that, you should have done it while France was still alive.
At a time when the invincible German Wehrmacht was throwing its full force into the Soviet Union, Anglo-American intervention had little meaning.
Wouldn’t Germany be able to defeat the Soviet Union just by giving them some supplies?
“Your Majesty, it is not something that can be viewed so simply.”
Heydrich took the possibility of Anglo-American intervention very seriously.
Heydrich knew the power of the Anglo-American alliance better than anyone else, as he had established an information network among brothels, Nazi groups, and religious organizations in each country.
If their economic power is invested in the Soviet Union, even the invincible German army will not be able to achieve an easy victory.
“It’s a war that will end in September at most. Isn’t that right, Hess?”
“Your Excellency the President is right.”
Rudolf Hess, the party secretary who was always at the Führer’s side, chimed in.
There was no need to listen to the opinions of the parrot who only followed Hitler’s thoughts without any subjectivity of his own.
“Your Excellency, the intervention of the United States and the United Kingdom is an issue that requires an all-out response, mobilizing all diplomatic and economic lines.”
Even without that, we are already hearing reports that Korea is collaborating with the Soviet Union.
If Britain and the United States joined in, how much industrial power would the Soviet Union be able to exert?
Just thinking about it gave me goosebumps.
“I fully understand your concerns. However, please bring this matter before discussing it with the leader of the SS state.”
You want me to consult with Himmler?
Heydrich withdrew from Hitler’s presence in deep disappointment.
Since the President could not understand what was being said, there was no choice but to respond at the level of the National Security Headquarters.
Heydrich gave orders to the Sixth Reich Foreign Intelligence Service (SD), one of the seven headquarters of the State Security Headquarters (RSHA).
The gist of the order was simple.
“We will stand in solidarity with American isolationists and defend against American intervention at a minimal level.”
The goal was to prevent anything like the Lend-Lease Act from being passed in the United States.
“We will actively publicize the weaknesses of anti-German politicians like Churchill in the newspapers.”
Britain aimed to undermine the standing of anti-German politicians by highlighting incidents such as Gallipoli and the Ottoman battleship sinking.
Heydrich’s instructions were passed on to Heinz Jost, the director of the Sixth Reich.
Yost balked at this assignment.
“Are you telling us to fight underwater with only our own resources? It’s not a very good picture.”
But I couldn’t disobey the order.
Heydrich was not the type to forgive subordinates who disobeyed his orders.
“There’s nothing we can do. It’s the chief’s order. Begin the operation.”
SD began operations against the Allied Forces under orders from their commander.
