“Who, Rosenblur?”
“Step back. Cordelia.”
He answered, gathering his magic power in both hands. Cordelia limped behind him.
In just a month, Rosenblur’s atmosphere had changed dramatically. The gentle man who always had a gentle smile was nowhere to be found, and only a coldness was on his face.
“When did you come to Hasimus?”
“Today. I was chasing after Nazabut.”
“You leech.”
Nazabut spitted bloody saliva on the floor and got up from his seat.
Chelsea’s one arm, which had been taken over by the devil due to Rosenblur’s attack, dangled. The bone was exposed, as if it had been broken, but Nazabut didn’t frown, but simply smiled nonchalantly.
“It seems to be another ‘shadow.’”
“A shadow?”
“Nazabut is splitting off a part of its self or power and implanting it in other hosts. The Triska School calls them shadows. The shadows that the demon subjugation team discovered and removed earlier alone numbered three.”
“That many? Then the one that entered Chelsea’s body was also a shadow?”
Instead of answering, Rosenblur nodded slightly and turned his gaze to the demon.
Nazabut stomped his feet a few times, and insects the size of a grown man’s forearm wriggled and dug up from the ground. Rosenblur condensed the wind and cut off the heads of the insects in the shape of a boomerang. The insects’ intestines soaked the floor.
Cordelia whispered in a small voice,
“By the way, do you know where the Master is?”
“Outside the castle. He can’t come right now. A demon appeared around Hashimus, and Leo and the knights left the castle to deal with it. I just came from there.”
It seemed that she wasn’t the only one who felt the castle was too quiet.
But a demon. Even though Hashimus was a city located south of Ershe, it was not an area where demons would appear.
“Why would a demon be in Hashimus?”
“It seems to be the influence of that demon.”
Rosenblur glared at Nazabut and muttered softly.
All the insects were shattered. A round magical power gradually took shape at his fingertips, and a bird resembling flames appeared. Nazabut frowned as soon as he saw that it had been quite tormenting him.
“It’s so annoying!”
“Me too.”
Rosenblur stretched out his hand with a blank expression. The bird darted toward the demon. Nazabut grew annoyed and pulled out her long fingernails and swung them at the bird.
“How long do you think this trick will work?”
The bird lost one wing and staggered.
Cordelia remembered the magic that Loti had told her about before, which separated the demon from its host. She couldn’t be sure of the effect because she didn’t know what condition Nazabut was in, but that was all she could do for now.
She took a deep breath and began to design her magic slowly.
Soon, a familiar pain came over her. Still, she could bear it because she had done it several times before.
She closed her eyes and concentrated as she suddenly felt someone’s arms grab her waist tightly.
“Huh?”
She opened her eyes in confusion and found herself in Rosenblu’s arms. He silently pointed to the spot where she had been with his chin.
It was hollow. Nazabut licked her lips in regret.
“It’s been a while since I’ve seen you, and you’re trying to do that trick again? It’s not fun.”
“Your magic must be threatening. I can see you changing your target right away.”
Rosenblu said in a small voice, tightening his grip on Cordelia’s waist. The more Nazabut got annoyed, the more Cordelia became confident and devoted to her magic.
That was when.
[It was good that you came quickly.]
“Loti!”
Last night, Lottie, who had disappeared since Leonard guided her to the place where the demons were summoned, suddenly appeared. However, she looked like she had been in a fight somewhere, and her whole body was covered in blood.
“Are you hurt?”
[It’s not my blood.]
Lottie gave a short answer and rushed at Nazabut. She was a shadow, so her movements were a bit slower than Nazabut’s usual. Lottie bit her dangling right arm.
“You’re annoying!”
Nazabut shook her arm roughly, but Lottie held on to her arm tightly and wouldn’t let go. In the meantime, Rosenblu’s magical bird had regained its wings and was running towards Nazabut again.
“Damn it.”
Cordelia’s magic had also been completed at that moment. The intensity of the pain she had to endure was much weaker, so she quickly finished distributing her magical power.
I guess what was in Chelsea’s body right now was not real, but just a shadow, so she was receiving less magical power load.
Nazabut twisted his body grotesquely. He grimaced and raised his left arm to cut off Loti’s right arm. Thanks to sacrificing one arm, he was able to avoid Rosenblur’s attack.
Blood exploded and sprayed everywhere, then quickly subsided. Loti immediately spat out the right arm he had been biting.
“Ouch. It hurts!”
Nazabut groaned and shook his left hand, which was still intact. However, Cordelia’s magic added to his movements, making him slow and sluggish.
Rosenblur created several fireballs and threw them at Nazabut. Nazabut dodged in the opposite direction to avoid them.
Loti took advantage of the gap and bit Nazabut’s nape. It must have been fatal because Nazabut fell backwards.
“Aaak!”
Loti grabbed Nazabut’s neck and shook him without mercy. The sight was as merciless as a hunting dog squeezing a chicken’s neck.
“Ugh, save me, save me. Miss, miss! Please save me.”
Nazabut’s voice suddenly became weak. It was a familiar voice she had heard many times. Cordelia reached out to Nazabut, who was flinching and twisting her body.
“Chelsea?”
“No way.”
Rosenbler grabbed Cordelia’s shoulder and stopped her. Then, with an extremely cold expression, he created a bigger fireball than before and threw it at Nazabut.
“A host whose mind has been taken over by a demon can never wake up again.”
“But, no. I guess what Rosenbler said is right.”
No one dared ask Rosenbler, who must have been more desperate than anyone else, for foolish hope.
Lottie was biting the demon’s neck tightly, so Nazabut had no choice but to take the fireball all over her body. Soon, the fire spread to Nazabut’s body, burning her entire body. Only then did Lottie step back.
The magical fire was different from ordinary fire, instantly burning Nazabut to a pitch black and then slowly dying down. It looked like a burnt-out log rather than a person.
“If a shadow dies, does it affect Nazabut?”
“It’s not certain yet, but it will have some impact.”
[It was a shadow after all.]
Lottie trudged toward Cordelia.
[Nazabut’s power seems to have gotten stronger. If it’s splitting a part of its shadow, it means it has some power left.]
“In any case, since the power is being separated from the main body, shouldn’t it be weaker?”
[Compared to the original Nazabut, the split shadow isn’t that big. The problem is that the more shadows there are, the harder it is to completely erase Nazabut from this world.]
“My goodness. So if Nazabut continues to create shadows, you can never kill him?”
[In theory, yes.]
Rosenbler looked back and forth between Cordelia and Lottie, who seemed to be having a conversation.
“That demon is not a normal demon.”
“Oh, that’s true.”
She stopped herself from telling Roseblur the truth. She was afraid of how Roseblur would react if she found out that she was a half-demon and could talk to demons.
“It’s just, it’s just… … Lottie is a little special.”
When she mumbled the words, Roseblur didn’t ask any more questions. The soldiers who arrived late held their noses when they saw Chelsea’s charred body.
“What the hell is going on?”
“Chelsea.”
“Huh?”
“Chelsea died instead of me while trying to save me. Does Chelsea have a family?”
“Oh my. This charred body is that girl? I heard Chelsea only has one family, her grandmother.”
“I see.”
Cordelia felt complicated. She had been unlucky enough to be targeted by Nazabut and died at such a young and pretty age. She was one of the few people who had taken care of her in Embly Castle.
“Please take care of it and give her a proper funeral. I’ll pay for all the expenses.”
“Yes, I understand.”
The soldiers called in a few more servants and carried Chelsea away. Cordelia watched them through to the end before entering the castle with Rosenblu. Lottie followed them quietly.
“You followed Nazabut’s shadow all the way here.”
“That’s right.”
“Well, where is Nazabut’s real body?”
“Lydia?”
Rosenblu said directly, making his beating around the bush seem meaningless. Cordelia hesitated and lowered her eyes.
“I don’t know. It’s been more than ten days since I last saw Lydia.”
“What did Lady Matilda say?”
“She told me to forget about the Lydia I knew, since she’s dead.”
“… … .”
Cordelia shut her mouth in surprise at the cold and cruel words. Rosenblu took a few steps and stopped. Cordelia also slowed her steps.
“I found Lydia’s diary. It says why she made this choice.”
“Why did you bring Nazabut down? Is it because of the Master?”
The wind blew between them. Rosenblur reached out to Cordelia’s cheek. Unlike his cold face that had never smiled, his touch still exuded affection.
He tidied up the hair that tickled Cordelia’s cheek and put it to her ear.
“He said it was because of you.”
“Huh? Me?”
“Yes. I didn’t like the fact that you suddenly appeared one day and became Leonard’s disciple, and I was annoyed by your outstanding talent, and I was going crazy thinking that I would be sitting next to Leo for the rest of my life… .” “I,
I am like that. But I don’t think Lydia is like that at all… .”
Cordelia was so flustered that all the words that came out of her mouth were torn apart. Rosenblur stared at Cordelia with his blue eyes that could not read her emotions.
“She said that she felt like she could breathe only when you were gone.”
