Infected - Chapter 9
Only Noblemtl
Episode 8
Two people heading downstairs stopped at the landing.
From the 9th floor onwards, the corridor is not open, and you have to open the emergency exit door on the landing to enter the corridor. The problem was the sound coming from beyond the door.
Was it because of the screams of the infected that the two people were dealing with?
The creepy sound coming from beyond the iron door was definitely not coming from just one or two people.
Beomsik said.
“There’s no need to go in here. Let’s just go down the stairs.”
“No, I thought about it, and it’s fine to go down from here. So what next?”
“Why are you asking me that? We each go our own way.”
Finance stared at the sharp reaction.
“Even if you say so… That’s not it, but even if you go down, will you be able to leave this building? You saw it earlier. How many of them are outside.”
Beomsik was speechless.
“This isn’t a matter of getting out of the building right now. We have to wait inside for rescue, even if it takes time.”
“structure?”
Beomsik asked, raising his eyebrows.
“Do you want me to keep saying the same thing? I told you that if you go out, you’ll die right away? It won’t even take a second. I didn’t think much of it, but after dealing with one just now, it’s not something to think about easily.”
“I never thought it would be easy.”
“Oh, yeah. That’s great. Anyway, if you’re going to go, go alone. I’ll find a convenience store and hide there. If the world isn’t this fucked up, I’ll come to the rescue someday.”
“Convenience store? Where?”
“Well, it must be somewhere.”
Even after saying those words, Jae-jae scratched his face.
Convenience stores are usually located on the outside of the first floor of a building, in a place that is well exposed.
I’ve never heard of a convenience store being located on the 5th or 7th floor.
Unless it’s a special place like a movie theater.
Beomsik let out a small sigh.
“Ha… Yeah, like you said, I’ve never thought about going outside the building. I admit it. But I don’t know about the convenience store, and I have something I’ve been looking into.”
“What are you looking at?”
Beomsik smiled arrogantly as if he knew some great secret.
“I saw it briefly on the first floor earlier, and it said that the employee cafeteria is on the fifth floor.”
It seemed to be referring to the floor guide posted next to the elevator.
Finance looked at his hungry stomach with expectant eyes.
“It’s a restaurant… I think it can easily last for a day.”
“Let’s go down right now. I can’t stand hearing those things crying any longer.”
“That’s true.”
The two of them walked down the stairs quickly as if they had made a promise.
As expected, there were no infected people on the emergency stairs.
The two of them didn’t let their guard down until the very end, but not a single ant showed up.
However, the problem was that the closer you got to the 5th floor, the louder the chorus of infected people coming from below became.
At that level of noise, the sound heard from the 9th floor was nothing more than a joke.
Finance peeked his head out from between the handrails of the stairs.
The first floor was a mess, with black infected people piled up on top of each other, as if it were a cockroach nest.
The hairs on the arm that was holding the handle stood on end like iron filings attracted to a magnet.
Their hair was all gone, and their bodies were covered in wounds under their torn clothes.
The fact that even a small sound could put them in danger of death at any time made the two hold their breath.
No, it made it so I couldn’t even breathe properly.
Perhaps it was the fear that they might come up at any moment that made my legs feel heavy as if they were carrying sandbags.
Squeak-
Beomsik opened the iron door leading to the fifth floor.
Beomsik sneaks his head out through the crack in the door.
I quickly looked left and right.
Fortunately, there was no one in the hallway.
It was late at night when the first two people entered the building, so it was expected that there would be no one there.
The entire fifth floor was comprised of restaurants and shops.
The interior was dark, with the lights off, except for the light coming in from the surrounding buildings.
Beomsik nods to the door.
Since he opened the stairs, the restaurant was supposed to open its finances.
Jae-Jeong slowly turned the doorknob of the restaurant, which was made of iron unlike other places.
But Jae-gye’s face, as he turned the handle and pulled it, was filled with embarrassment.
The entire handle came off.
The heavy stainless steel handle made a loud noise as it fell.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Roll.
The two, frozen in the sudden situation, just stared blankly at the rolling handle.
Why do sounds that I normally wouldn’t even notice sound so loud?
Gulp.
Finance swallowed dry saliva.
At the same time, Beomsik’s head suddenly turned around.
It’s a sound.
Footsteps were heard from somewhere.
It wasn’t just one or two footsteps.
But the two of them froze and didn’t respond at all.
They just look at each other with expressions of doubting their ears.
And just as that doubt turned into certainty, a thunderous roar burst out of Jae-jae’s mouth.
“Come inside!”
The voice that echoed through the hallway overlapped with the sound of something exploding.
Wow!
At the same time as that sound, the doors to the store and the break room were smashed open.
At the same time, countless infected people and glass shards swept out like waves.
The men who were running madly were pushed by each other’s bodies and fell to the ground, trampled on.
However, more than half of them failed to turn in time and ended up going straight into the store across the street.
It seemed like he had a lot of strength but couldn’t control it.
It was common for me to fall over and get thrown around without even being able to find my center.
The two people who took advantage of the gap to enter the restaurant realized that there was no handle to turn the lock, so they hurriedly brought in a table and chairs.
A line of silhouettes ran at full speed through the hallway outside the glass walls, where stickers blocked the view.
“Push!”
At the signal of the finances, Beomsik pushes the table and shelves towards the door with all his might.
Boom! Boom! Kwakwakwakwak!
As soon as I pushed the shelf open, there was a loud knock on the door.
It was really a close call.
If I had been just one second late, the door would have been breached.
“This isn’t enough!”
Beomsik looked around and shouted as he watched the door rattle with every impact.
At that time, a restaurant refrigerator caught Jae-Yeong’s eye.
A silver refrigerator with four doors stood outside the kitchen.
“How do you move that… … .”
Beomsik’s eyes widened as he looked at the finances stuck to the refrigerator.
As soon as the big refrigerator gained financial power, it lost its balance and started to get pushed out.
It was a power that was hard to believe even after seeing it.
Wasn’t that a refrigerator that required several men to move?
“What are you looking at!”
Beomsik, who had come to his senses at Jaeyi’s words while he was struggling, added strength.
bang-
The heavy refrigerator slammed into the table with a loud noise, and the door was completely shut.
“phew…….”
Only then did the two breathe a sigh of relief.
Inside, there was a water fountain with a water purifier and plenty of clean cups.
Even though the infected kept knocking on the door, I wasn’t anxious thanks to the refrigerator.
Besides, since it was an iron door, there was no need to worry about it breaking.
There are stickers all over the glass, so you can’t see inside.
It was perfect, except that there was no exit.
‘There is no exit… … .’
Probably both of them think the same thing.
The number of infected people outside is at least several dozen.
Escape seemed impossible.
There was no way to know what so many people had been doing on the fifth floor up until this point and had become infected, but the important thing was that they were trapped here.
If I didn’t find another way, I might just starve to death.
Finance shook its head.
“I’m done for, I’m totally trapped.”
“You should have handled it gently. Can’t you control your strength like that?”
“No, it was broken from the start.”
“The broken handle must have been reattached well.”
“That’s… not true… It definitely fell off as soon as I turned it. It felt like someone had put it back on after it fell off.”
Jae-ga spoke with a look of resentment, but Beom-sik did not listen.
“Would you be foolish?”
“Even if the kid talks… at least the crisis has passed.”
“Yeah, what difference would it make if I blamed someone in this situation? I just had that thought. If it had been me who broke the handle instead of you, what would you have said… .”
“I said I didn’t break it. What can I say? You’ll just think, ‘You grabbed something that was already broken,’ or ‘You’re unlucky.’”
Finance said with his arms crossed and his eyes darting around.
“I really hope so. Wow… what is this.”
Beomsik opened the refrigerator door and let out a gasp as he answered dryly. Inside the refrigerator were a lot of carefully cut vegetables and uncooked meat patties.
“Why? What is it?”
“I thought you were thinking of making hamburgers?”
“Hamburger? Let’s see… Oh, right. Here it is. I guess it was supposed to be delivered in the morning.”
Jae-jae found a whiteboard near where the refrigerator used to be and muttered while looking at the schedule.
On the kitchen shelf were stacks of unopened hamburger buns.
Jae-jae, who had been lost in thought for a moment, tore open the wrapping paper.
“First, I need to grill some patties and make a hamburger.”
“What do you want to eat now?”
“Hey, what are you going to eat that’s going to make you want to grind them or drink them?”
“No, eating is good, but let’s think about it after the situation has been resolved. Those guys are still wandering around the front door, and you can’t eat food?”
Beomsik shook his head as if he couldn’t understand.
In the hallway, dozens of silhouettes were moving around, making strange noises.
Although they weren’t knocking as much as before, I was anxious because they kept going back and forth frantically, as if they were always looking for an opening.
“You said you were underage, right? When you go to the military, no matter how bad the conditions are, you’ll be given regular meals. If you don’t eat, you’ll lose your fighting ability and be sent to the military prison. That’s how important energy is. Oh, what else can I say to you?”
Kwaaang!
“You eat so much that your body size is like that… What, what is it?”
Beomsik, who had been sneer-ing, suddenly lowered his posture.
It was the same with Finance, who put the patties in the frying pan.
It was definitely the sound of something exploding.
It was a huge explosion that felt like it was being felt throughout the building.
The two quickly ran to the window.
Something was falling down.
As the two looked out the window, countless shards of glass and concrete rained down.
Without saying who would go first, the two of them stuck their heads out and looked up.
The explosion occurred on the top floor where two people were drinking water.
Finance speculated that the explosion may have been caused by a short circuit, given that it occurred on a floor with a variety of facilities.
But the problem was from now on.
Tick.
The lights went out in the entire building.
It couldn’t have been a temporary blackout.
Because there was a power outage after the explosion on the floor where the computer room is.
That meant I couldn’t leave this place until the sun came up.
Although I hadn’t turned on the lights since I got to the restaurant, it was a whole other matter that I couldn’t keep them on forever.
Because of this, they couldn’t turn on the gas that might be leaking somewhere, and their dreams of grilling patties and eating hamburgers disappeared with the explosion.
“Oh, I think this is really a big problem.”
“…maybe.”
The situation was not good enough for Beomsik to agree without much comment.
The only silver lining was that all the infected people loitering around the door had disappeared somewhere.
It was easy to tell that there was no one in the hallway thanks to the various lights coming in from outside illuminating the inside of the building.
Beomsik asked.
“Where did you go?”
“I don’t know. But what I know for sure is that they’ve moved away from us. They’re chasing after bigger stimuli.”
“I need to know where it went to get out… Why is that?”
Beomsik, who was looking down the hallway between the stickers, asked Jaejung, who was looking out the window.
Finance stood there with an expression on his face as if he had lost his mind about something.
That kind of expression wasn’t something you saw often.
I intuitively sensed something was going on.
“Why are you asking that?”
“I’ll take back what I said, it seems like something big has happened.”
“What is it?”
Beomsik, who couldn’t wait any longer, walked to the window himself.
And the moment I witnessed what Jae-jae was seeing, I felt as if all the blood in my body was drained.
“This… This really seems like something big.”
Wherever the two people’s gazes turned, thousands, if not tens of thousands of infected people were running madly towards the building.
The number of them seemed to be so great that they were like an army of alien creatures advancing, destroying the Earth.
Infected people
