Side Story 1: My Childhood Friend Came at Me With Hypnosis.

The time was after school. The place, my seat in our classroom.

Midterms were fast approaching, and I was planning on burning the midnight oil to catch up on today’s studies. I had just finished dinner and was taking a short break when Aki, out of the blue, came to find me and uttered these words:

“Tada! Ujuu~chan, guess what *this* is~?!”

“……Huh?”

“Hehe. Prepare to be amazed! What this is, is none other than… a Hypnosis App~!”

“A Hypnosis App…?”

“Yup, yup! A Hypnosis App! How about that? Amazing, right? Isn’t it fascinating? Don’t you want to know where I got it~?”

For a moment, my mind went blank.

Seriously. Showing up out of nowhere to someone trying to study, only to blurt out “Hypnosis App.” What is Aki even *doing* instead of studying? We’re about to take our sophomore year midterms; I need to focus even *more* than usual.

“Aki, did you finish the homework your tutor gave you?”

“Eh? No, I haven’t.”

“Then, what about yesterday’s progress that you didn’t finish because you were sleepy? You finished *that*, right?”

“Not yet, either….”

A sigh escaped me.

I took Aki’s wrist and made her place the phone on the desk. Then, clasping her now-empty hands tightly in both of mine, I looked her squarely in the eyes and began to speak.

“Taking a break is fine. People can’t just study every single day, you know. But listen. Not doing what you need to do and *then* taking a break isn’t a break. It’s just slacking off. Irresponsibly.”

“You said you wanted to go to the same university as me. You said you wanted to live with me when we’re college students, right? Is it okay for someone who says that to be acting like this? Especially at such a critical time?”

Aki’s voice, shrinking into the floor.

Just moments ago, Aki had been buzzing with excitement, but now I could practically feel her deflating. She’d probably thought she’d found some hilarious app, and hadn’t expected me to react like this.

She seemed to be regretting it herself, so I figured I should ease up on the push-and-pull. I let out a little chuckle, loud enough for Aki to hear. Her eyes, which had been drooping downwards, snapped upwards, a hopeful gleam in them.

“So, what did you say this app was?”

“Ah! Ahem…! I-it’s a hypnosis app. A hypnosis app…!”

Her face lit up as she grabbed her phone and showed it to me. I took a glance, wondering what the fuss was about, and saw some suspiciously-looking mobile app open on the screen. The app’s name was: [Order Anything You Want! ~The Ultimate, Most Malevolent Hypnosis App~]. In Japanese, of course.

“Hmm. This is a hypnosis app?”

“Yup, yup. That’s right. You just press this button here and it can hypnotize people, and anyone who’s hypnotized will do whatever the hypnotizer tells them. Amazing, right?”

“Oh, really? Sounds pretty incredible…”

I said it with feigned amazement, but inside, I was thinking,

‘Ah. This is a scam app, isn’t it.’

An app that could hypnotize someone into obeying any command just by pressing a button? There’s no way such an absurd app could exist in the real world.

If it did, either there would already be utter chaos, or someone would have established a global, one-person dictatorship. Seriously.

Called it an instruction manual, expected something complicated, but a grade-schooler could understand this. Then again, a scam app doesn’t need to be complex, I suppose.

*Yank, yank*, Aki tugged on the sleeve of my school uniform shirt.

Judging by her bright expression, she must have high hopes for this hypnosis app. Too bad it’s a scam. Testing it as is will only lead to disappointment.
