The Chaebol Who Flies From Space - Chapter 41

41. Pour out advertising material! (1)
Zhang Yinlin and his father were quick to seize power and then switch to the General Secretary’s side.
Although they will keep an eye on things in the middle, it is obvious that the power of the public hearing group will grow stronger over the next 10 years or so.
That would be enough time to take a profit and get out.
“Just watch what others say and don’t step forward. A nail that sticks out will get hit by a hammer.”
“Of course. That’s why I’m here.”
This was the reason why the only son of Zhang Guangdong, the secretary of the Communist Party of China, did not build a career in the party but instead went into business. If he did something wrong, he would most likely be hit by a stray bullet in the political struggle.
You can build your career in a safe place like Maotai and then return to a high-ranking position in the government.
“It’s a good plan. I’ll work as a director of Maotai for a while and then try to become its president.”
After exchanging stories like this, our visit to Maotai Temple came to an end.
On the way back, my grandfather told me about his visit to the factory.
“There will be limits to mass production, since the factories are located close together in a small space. Water pollution will likely be severe, and above all, there will likely be a water shortage.”
It seemed that way to me too.
Estimates of China’s population have been going back and forth, with estimates ranging from 1.2 billion to 1.4 billion. No one knows the exact number.
That huge population was the foundation of China’s economy.
It’s hard to get started, but once you get on the development track, it accelerates.
“Demand will increase, but supply is limited, so eventually the price of alcohol will have to go up.”
“It’s a good investment. I think it will serve as a cash cow in the future.”
Grandfather smiled with satisfaction. It is an investment that is expected to yield more than 100 billion won in dividends every year.
It would take about 4 years to recover the investment.
“How about building a production plant here?” It doesn’t require any special know-how.
“Will quality control be possible? I think it would be more advantageous to just export like we are doing now.”
“I wonder?”
“Have you heard that they cook street food using waste oil?”
“That must be nonsense. How could that be true? How could someone tamper with food that people eat?”
“That’s true. Not all, but some do business that way. I had someone check it out for me.”
“……”
“It’s a place that is so untrustworthy. If we get stabbed in the back by Chinese workers, the entire export volume will be shaken. The main reason Chinese people consume our products is because they want safe and reliable food, so is there any need to build a factory in China?”
My grandfather shook his head at my words.
I guess I never thought that hygiene would be that bad.
“The Chinese people today are people who have never had time to learn about business ethics. The older Chinese people are people who, when they were young, experienced the Great Famine that killed 40 million people and had to survive the Cultural Revolution that denied the past. People who used to think that they could do anything to survive now think that they can do anything to make money.”
“Ha, we also experienced the hungry times of the Japanese colonial period and the Korean War, so we are not unaware of the pain of starvation, but we have a sense of shame.”
“Most people with a sense of shame in China are dead, the last of which was in Tiananmen Square.”
Strangely enough, when dealing with Chinese people, there was a twisted corner in the middle of my consciousness.
“······. I guess we’ll have to give up on direct production. We don’t have a ton of know-how in our food products.”
“Why are you looking at my face?”
“That’s because you didn’t tell me the secret.”
I tried to figure out the secret behind the maturing barrel, but failed every time. They would make it for me if I asked, but I could never figure out why.
I analyzed the ingredients that coated the product, but nothing came out sharply. It was made up of ingredients that seemed ordinary, but strangely, even if I made it exactly the same way, it didn’t work.
“There are secrets that even family members cannot reveal.”
“Why don’t you just tell me? Aren’t we family?”
It was a ridiculous statement.
If it were that easy to make, why limit the quantity?
They were struggling to deal with the enormously increased quantity. There is also a limit to the special metals collected from the meteorite exchange.
Sometimes I just feel like building a spaceship and launching it into space.
Since there is no material to make an anti-gravity engine on Earth, if we just send it to the Kuiper Belt in an improved form, there will be materials to make an anti-gravity engine.
I had to pester my grandfather for a long time to tell him the secret.
I came straight from China to New York when I heard unexpected news.
Emma Brown’s TimeShock-Spring, ambitiously launched to target the spring market, was a flop. And it wasn’t just a flop.
It was a total failure.
“How much did you sell?”
“······.2,500.”
This is what it looked like even after spending over 5 million dollars on massive advertising.
Emma, who was confident in her perfume, insisted on producing over 100,000 units.
Producing 100,000 units, 2,500 units?
Inventory pressure must be severe.
Why is that?
There’s no way the world’s best perfume wouldn’t sell well.
A variety of thoughts crossed my mind.
Emma, with her nose cut off, cringed.
I needed some time alone to think.
[Master The US economy is temporarily weak, which is fatal. After 9/11, the patriotic economy revived, but now it is in a lull. The stock market is likely to remain depressed until the summer, and the real estate market is not doing so well. It is said that Emma Brown’s main consumers are cautious about purchasing new products. Low brand awareness also played a part.]
“So you’re saying the wallet is closed?”
[Yes, perfume is a luxury item, so once you decide on one, it’s hard to change it, and with the recession in the US, sales are sluggish. It still needs time. Once you try it, you won’t be able to stop without changing it.]
“You need time? Time!”
[Conversely, it is fortunate that sales were slow in the beginning. From now on, we need to increase production of goods to secure inventory. Later on, supply will not be able to keep up.]
“It’s true that the New Jersey plant is short of production capacity. How long will it take?”
[No matter how much you advertise, considering the time it takes for people who have tried it to recommend it to their friends and the time it takes for the economy to recover from the recession, I think it will take at least half a year.]
“Half a year. Half a year. I think I can hold out for that long. It won’t be like this forever. Let’s just advertise it on a big scale.”
[If it’s advertising, aren’t you still doing it?]
“Instead of that, they advertise on a large scale during the prime time of the three major public broadcasting stations. What are some popular TV programs right now?”
I don’t really watch TV programs because they’re boring. I didn’t really watch holographic TVs before because they didn’t seem lifelike, but there’s no way I could find two-dimensional images on a small screen fun.
[The CSI series on CBS is popular. Would you like to skip FOX TV?]
“The kids there are unlucky, so they don’t do it. There are no kids watching it. Anyway, if they advertise like a waterfall during prime time, the number of people buying it will increase.”
The more I thought about it, the more annoyed I became. No, if you make such a good product, consumers should buy it on their own.
Because they’re like the country bumpkins.
Emma was taken aback by the story I brought up in the meeting that followed.
“That’s ridiculous! Advertising a product that doesn’t sell, and on prime time?”
If you think about it logically, that’s what happened.
But who am I?
“In addition, we need to increase our inventory. Keep the factories running as much as possible to secure the quantity. Do you also need time to procure additional materials?”
“I can get the materials if I just order them, but I’m going to have a headache just dealing with inventory and then there’s the additional production!”
Emmana’s fragrance director, Miller Gordon, looked like he didn’t understand.
Before I arrived, they had been trying to have a sale in an effort to reduce inventory by any means necessary.
It was ridiculous to say there was a sale.
To protect the brand image, even unsold inventory is burned.
“I will give you $50 million. This is personal support. If the funds are insufficient, I will give you additional support.”
The two were left speechless by my words.
“…..”
“…..”
Perhaps because of a liquidity crisis, they were not considering their brand image at all as they were busy dealing with perfume inventory that was not selling as well as they had hoped. I asked Miller.
“How much would it cost to advertise during the three major networks’ prime time?”
“We’ll have to find out, but it’s going to cost a lot of money. Especially the time slots where CSI: Las Vegas airs are going to cost a lot of money.”
“Is that the most popular program in America these days?”
“An average of 14 million households watch during prime time.”
“Let’s do it at that time. Don’t worry about the advertising fee and do it.”
“Are you crazy? Do you know how much that is!”
Emma jumped again.
“It would cost more than 30 million dollars at most.”
“······.Yes! How much?”
“……”
The two of them looked at each other, dumbfounded by what I said.
“I don’t mind paying 30 million or more for the advertisement fee. I’ll definitely get it. Who is the best at shooting advertisements?”
“I don’t know what you are talking about.”
“No, who is famous as a commercial director?”
“Ridley is the best, but he has now moved on to film and no longer does commercials.”
“Ridley Scott, you mean? Is he a commercial director? What did he do? Do I know anything about it?”
“Before I made Alien, I was famous as a commercial director. I started to become famous as a director of Apple Macintosh commercials.”
“Apple Macintosh?”
I quickly searched the Internet for the ad Miller was talking about. It was slow, but I liked what I found on the Internet.
“Not bad. Let’s use this person as the commercial director. Then who should we use as the model? Of course, we should use Jamie. If we don’t use him this time, he’ll be really upset. Okay. Let’s do that.”
“…….”
“…….”
“What are you doing? You have to give Ridley the advertising. Why don’t you contact him?”
“Ridley doesn’t do commercials anymore. He only does movies. It’s a well-known fact in the industry.”
“So? Have you tried making a suggestion?”
“There were several offers before, but Ridley turned them all down.”
You seem like a stuffy person!
If your offer is rejected, you should consider whether the money was too little.
“5 million. Make an offer.”
Being a film director doesn’t mean you get paid a lot of money.
It’s not like there’s always work to be done, and if you’re involved in production, then maybe not. The amount of money a film director receives is limited.
The amount I was offering was so much that they would have put off making a movie and come running.
Rather than haggling over the price here and there, it’s better to make an offer that they can’t refuse right away.
It’s been a crazy week.
Emma was away due to her busy schedule for the London collections, so I took the lead and led the perfume marketing.
Ridley must have liked the storyboard I gave him because he immediately signed the contract, and Jamie, who was playing around, was dragged over.
He quickly gave the director whatever he wanted.
Director Ridley, who led his own production team, and lead actor Jamie receive directing and appearance fees, plus production costs, totaling $15 million.
It was an unprecedentedly large production cost.
In addition, the advertising fee for prime time broadcasts on CBS, NBC, and ABC was $37 million.
A full $52 million was spent on advertising.
I saw the final edited commercial before the full-scale TV commercial was launched.
It was an advertisement shot like a great movie.
Time Shock – Emma Brown.
The commercial ended with Jamie dressed up like a Greek goddess, smiling and calling out the product name.
Everyone who watched the commercial together cheered.
“It’s amazing. It came out better than I expected.”
“Jamie is so pretty. She really looks like a Greek goddess at the end.”
The staff members who worked together were all praiseful, saying that the commercial was really good. True to Ridley’s reputation for being good at shooting commercials, his skills were there and Jamie on screen was like a real goddess.
Since I was pressed for time, I just let it slide without saying anything, but I still didn’t like it for some reason.
