The Chaebol Who Flies From Space - Chapter 61
Only Noblemtl
61. Going to America (2)
The movie premiere was more fun than I expected.
For a film with a low budget by Hollywood standards, it was a pretty well-made film.
The story of a Greek spinster getting married is told in an entertaining way, along with family stories.
I heard that since there were no famous actors appearing, I was able to produce it with the amount of money I invested.
I asked my sister as I watched the final credits roll.
“What do you think of Jeongyeon?”
“It’s good. I heard it was very entertaining, but in my opinion, it’s a very well-made movie. I like the music, too. But I have a hard time empathizing with the story.”
It was fun when I watched it, but my sister didn’t seem to find it very funny.
I felt that the film had an American sensibility underlying it, so I thought it would be difficult for it to do well at the box office outside of North America.
Judging from the bright expression on Valentina’s face as she talked to the people over there, she seemed confident that the movie would be a success.
“Learn a lot this time. Before you start a full-fledged company, you need to learn a lot here so that you can go back and do your job properly.”
“Even if you don’t say so, I’ll take care of it. Just do your job properly. I’m going.”
Jeongyeon, who had responded rudely to what I said, approached Valentina and clung to her side.
Oh my, just do that!
She showed me exactly the same image of her ugly little sister, but she was really annoying as she clung to Valentina and started to tease her.
After telling Valentina that she enjoyed the movie, I left the screening room.
From now on, there is no need to take up the time of someone who is already busy.
Jeongyeon planned to stay with Valentina for a while and learn about the Hollywood film production process.
So I was planning to buy a luxury Spanish-style home in Beverly Hills.
Although he himself wanted an apartment where he could live comfortably alone, he had to live in a larger house because of security.
I grumbled about how I could clean and maintain a large house because it was inconvenient, but you just have to find someone to manage the house.
Since there are a lot of Koreans living in LA, it wasn’t that difficult to find people to work.
The Korean real estate agent that Song Han-young, the head of the American headquarters, found out about and introduced through an acquaintance moved quickly.
All the paperwork was completed while I was having a cup of tea at the real estate office.
The agent was delighted when I asked him to find people to work from home while signing the sales documents.
“I will do my best to find the people you want. And thank you very much.”
The old gentleman bowed at a 90-degree angle and greeted me politely.
Although I am old, I am not even 30 years old.
“Why are you doing that?”
“Isn’t the chairman the owner of the Seohae Oilfield? I was so happy to hear the news that I couldn’t sleep at night for a while. Just thinking about the oilfield made me smile. I thought it was just me, but it turns out that most Koreans in LA are like that. Thank you very much. Who would have thought that Korea would become an oil-producing country in my lifetime?”
“It’s still a long way off. Saudi Arabia’s daily production is 13 million barrels. Korea’s production is still less than 1 million barrels.”
“How can Korea be compared to Saudi Arabia? I heard that even the US has lost a lot of oil fields, and its daily production is now 4 million barrels. I also heard that you are the owner of the Cantarell Oil Field in Mexico. I heard that when oil production begins in earnest, crude oil will be brought into Houston.”
They say that Koreans become patriots when they live abroad, but I thought the broker was a bit extreme. Korean residents in the country know about the West Sea oil field, but most of them didn’t know that I was the owner of the Cantarell oil field in Mexico.
“How do you know that, when there was no such story anywhere?”
“I have a Mexican friend and he’s in chaos there too. He says the Cantarell oil field, which was thought to have dried up, has come back to life.”
“That doesn’t sound good. Aren’t all the oil fields in Mexico state-owned?”
“Where are you, the Mexican government is a bunch of thieves who are always trying to steal money. They were desperate for a rich man like you to step forward. There was an article in a Mexican newspaper criticizing them for allowing private development of the Cantarell oil field, and they got a lot of hate.”
It was good news.
It meant that my Cantarell holdings were safe.
“You sound like someone with experience in genetics.”
“When I was younger, I did some work for an oilfield development company in Texas.”
“So you know it well.”
“I know. It’s been a long time since I’ve touched it. I just get contacted by acquaintances sometimes.”
“I guess you have a lot of virtue since I still get contacted by old acquaintances. Where did you work?”
“Koreans don’t know much about this city, but there used to be a lot of oil companies in Midland, Texas. I heard that the number of companies there has decreased a lot compared to before.”
My eyes lit up at his words.
I checked his business card again, which I hadn’t paid much attention to.
Daniel Lee, Korean name is Lee Jun-ho.
“You must know a lot about Midland, sir. I’m thinking of buying some real estate there anyway.”
At my words, the curator waved his hand.
“Why would you buy land there? It’s shit land there. Shit land! There used to be oil there, but now the oil is running out and the oil companies are going out of business. There’s not much rainfall there, so it’s hard to farm, and at best you can do ranch work. It’s cheap, so you can buy it for $800 to $1,000 an acre.”
“I want to buy a lot of land there.”
The curator seemed to have realized something.
As a tycoon, I want to buy a lot of land, so it can’t possibly be a small area.
“······.How much do you want to buy it for?”
“I think it would take about ten years to buy it at $100 million a year.”
At this point, anyone who is quick-witted will know what I mean.
“Leave it to me. I will handle it for sure.”
“No, I’m going to start a real estate company in the US, so how about you take charge of it?”
There’s no way that Chief Song would introduce me to a worthless person when I was buying a house.
If he was an incredible conman, Ariel would have warned him.
I’ve hired countless people before, but when I first met them, my instincts were almost always right.
Even people who seem perfect on paper are often people you don’t like when you actually hire them.
After experiencing several failures, I decided to rely on my intuition when it came to hiring people.
It was a much more reliable method than resorting to fortune tellers like some people do.
“··· How much is your annual salary? I earn quite a bit of money even though I work like this.”
I don’t skimp on the money I give to my employees.
“We’ll have to negotiate the salary separately, but it’ll be much higher than you think. I’ve never heard my company’s executives complain about their salaries being low. Find out. And there will be additional incentives. In this case, it’ll be determined by how much land you buy near Midland.”
I felt like this curator’s heart was being completely taken by this curator.
“Go home and discuss it. It doesn’t matter if your workplace remains in LA.”
The director, who had been wondering for a moment whether these words were the wedge, opened his mouth.
“There’s no need to discuss it at home. If you refuse this offer, your wife will slap you and say you’re out of your mind.”
“It’s the right decision. There’s a lot of work ahead. For the time being, the main focus will be land acquisition in Texas, but over time, we’ll also need to purchase real estate in LA and New York.”
What would you do with all that cash in your hand? The next thing would be a building. I’ve already bought one.
“The future will be fun. I hope to buy the Rockefeller Building like the Japanese. I will do my best to assist the chairman.”
“I’ll take the Rockefeller Building. I’ll buy the Empire State Building.”
Americans were talking about Mitsubishi’s purchase of Rockefeller Center as a second Pearl Harbor, and I wondered what their reaction would be if I were to sweep up landmark real estate in a big city.
President Lee Jun-ho opened his mouth, feeling good just thinking about it.
“Mr. Chairman, you have mammoth genetics. I will do my best to scrape American real estate.”
“And my brother will be here for a while, is there anyone who can help him with his chores?”
“What’s going on?”
“I need someone who can help me with my work like a secretary. I was thinking of hiring someone from Korea, but I think it would be better to hire someone here. If you know someone trustworthy, please recommend them.”
“Since she is my younger sister, it would be better if she were a woman.”
“That’s right. I think my parents would be anxious if I had a male secretary. They wouldn’t like me being left alone in the United States.”
“I have someone I would like to recommend. It’s my eldest daughter. I heard that her younger sister is studying filmmaking in LA. My eldest daughter also graduated from college and is working at a film studio here.”
I felt like it was a stroke of luck that I met this CEO.
How did such a perfect talent appear?
“Then, let’s set a time and have an interview. I have to please my younger brother.”
“Of course. Your younger sister also seems to have a really good personality.”
Although she’s a bit of a jerk to me, I’ve never seen Jeongyeon get cursed at by people. It must be because of her strict upbringing at home.
“It may seem like a shame to brag about my younger sister, but my family never treats adults rudely. That’s why she is a very polite child. If your daughter works with you, you won’t have any difficulties because of interpersonal relationships.”
The most frustrating thing about working at a company is interpersonal relationships.
If you meet a crazy person at work, even a sane person will become strange. Moreover, if the crazy person is your superior, the difficulty of work life turns into hell mode.
It’s terrifying to even think about.
“Well, that’s fortunate. I guess my daughter also has a hard time at work. I’ve worked in the US, but there’s a glass ceiling regardless of ability.”
“If you stay by my sister’s side, your daughter will be able to fully demonstrate her abilities.”
On the way to the house I bought, I had a long conversation with the chairman.
I decided to work in my current real estate office for the time being without having to get a separate office, and then move into a building once I buy it.
When I arrived at my new house, all the furniture was gone and it felt a little empty.
“It’s been four years since it was built, so it needs to be renovated.”
“I’ll fix it when my younger sister moves out. For now, I’ll just fill it with the necessary furniture. Don’t worry about the price, and order the furniture quickly.”
When Jeongyeon saw the house, she complained that it was too big, and it was definitely too big for her to live in alone.
There’s no furniture, so it’s just a playground.
“I know a friend who runs a furniture store, but the furniture they sell is not the highest quality.”
“But?”
“If you don’t mind, I can furnish your house today.”
“Then please do so. We don’t really care about the quality of furniture.”
Furniture is furniture.
“All right.”
The chairman talked on the phone for a while and then came back.
“I’ll mobilize my entire family to deliver it today. I can’t afford to lose a customer worth $100,000.”
“Without even coming here?”
“I already made the measurements in advance. By tomorrow, the house will be completely finished, including the curtains.”
“It’s fast for an American.”
“You live in the US, but you’re Korean. If you pay enough money, you can get things done as quickly as in Korea. The only thing is that the internet takes time. If you apply, it takes a week.”
“There’s nothing we can do about it.”
These guys are full because they are monopolies.
They appear to compete, but in reality they have a monopoly on the area, so there is only one company that can sign up for internet access.
