Apocalypse in Water Episode 38
Episode 38
【 Correspondence 】
The sea of fire caused by the ignition of the ink continued for a day, emitting black smoke.
Since I wasn’t planning on opening the shield for three days anyway, I planned to wait leisurely while doing the pending work.
The first day, the smell of burning oil and smoke was so bad that I stayed in my apartment, turned on several air purifiers, and grilled some frozen beef.
The shield blocks tangible objects and physical forces, but allows smells, sounds, and water currents such as ocean currents to pass through.
“Wow! I never thought I could eat something like this in a world underwater.”
Bomi said, stuffing her mouth with a mouthful of beef steak.
I answered with a smile.
“Eat plenty. Bomi and Hoyoung too. You’ll have to work hard starting tomorrow.”
“You’re going to feed me well and eat me. Haha.”
“Haha. Did I get caught?”
“haha.”
The kids burst into laughter, but what I said wasn’t a joke, it was the truth.
In order to survive an apocalypse where the world is submerged in water, there are many things to do, such as preparing for enemies, securing food and water, heating and cooling, and maintaining facilities, just like living in a country house in the countryside.
Come to think of it, in the previous world, if you weren’t diligent, you couldn’t survive.
I worked through the night and went undercover on weekends and holidays to catch suspects.
In some ways, it seemed more comfortable and lively now.
In the past, I didn’t have time to eat, so I would just eat triangle kimbap or noodles, but now I’m quite careful about my diet.
Because in an apocalypse without hospitals or doctors, if your health deteriorates, that’s the end.
“How do you make me eat more carrots than Mom?”
When I put the frozen carrots on the plate, Hoyoung started complaining.
“If you don’t eat it, you won’t be allowed to touch the satellite equipment.”
Hoyoung said that he had done amateur radio (HAM) communication with his father when he was young, and showed great interest in the satellite equipment that came out of the US military transport plane.
“Okay, I’ll eat it.”
Hoyoung swallowed the carrot without even chewing and smiled.
I felt like an uncle taking care of his nephews and nieces, but I didn’t feel too bad about it.
Although he was an only child, he felt like he had finally felt human after his parents passed away.
The next day, we started working hard from early in the morning.
First, we started the task of drawing water from the well of the Dragon Palace.
I went into the dragon palace and connected the pipe to the well.
Then, he connected the pump to the pipe and pumped up the water.
However, because the distance to the rooftop water tank was so far, the pipe materials and pump output were insufficient.
There was a way to use the water pump installed in the apartment, but the water pump broke down because it was submerged in water.
Even if I were MacGyver, I couldn’t fix a broken water pump.
It would be great to have a relevant expert, but where can you find someone like that in this day and age?
First, we went to the second floor as an intermediate stop, placed various water containers, basins, and disassembled bath tubes, and filled them with water drawn from the well.
Then, a pulley extending from the second floor to the rooftop was installed on the outer wall, and water was pumped up.
The pulley was driven by a motor left behind by a man from Yanbian, but the work of pouring water into the bucket attached to the pulley and into the water tank had to be done by people.
We spent the whole day fetching and pouring water.
Young children might have complained that it was hard, but they worked hard without saying a word, perhaps because of what I said in the morning.
After all, humans do their best when they have a goal.
The water tank, which was a quarter full, was slightly more than half full by the time the sun went down.
At this level, I think I can use it for a while without worry.
I tested the toilet and the faucet.
Everything worked without a problem.
I don’t know how the apartment’s water and sewerage are connected in a world submerged in water, but at least the wastewater doesn’t seem to back up and flow into the sea.
“You worked hard today. Now you can shower and use the toilet as much as you want.”
At my permission, the children cheered as if they were liberated.
“Wow! How long has it been since I showered?”
“I felt so uncomfortable wiping it with a wet tissue all this time.”
“I’m so glad I don’t have to carry around a smelly poop bag.”
To save water, we hung a bag over the toilet, tied it up after we finished our business, and threw it into the sea.
It was unpleasant and uncomfortable in many ways, including the smell and hygiene.
Although food and safety issues were more important and urgent, these minor inconveniences still bothered me.
The kids were probably even more stressed out, as they even dreamed of building a diving board outside their apartment and a bottomless toilet.
Although flushing and electricity were certainly luxuries in a flooded apocalypse, my immediate goal was to create an apartment that was as close to my current lifestyle as possible.
Of course, the ultimate goal is to take down the Ark guys and turn the world around, but shouldn’t we live like humans first?
And solving these problems one by one like decorating a new house or putting up curtains gave me a strange sense of accomplishment and a sense of stability that this was my home.
For now, I’ve taken care of the hygiene issue. Tomorrow, I have to clean up and tidy up the apartment environment.
“Then hurry up and wash up and go to bed. Tomorrow will be just as hard as today.”
I winked at the kids.
The next day, we went out to reconnoiter the entire complex, something we had not been able to do before.
The plan was to identify the monsters in each area, deal with them if possible, and secure equipment, materials, and food.
But when I actually went out, there weren’t any monsters that were particularly threatening.
Saji, Sugu, and other small-sized monsters appeared like remnants, but we easily destroyed them.
“What is it? Why are these kids so weak? Are they different from the ones we fought before?”
Bomi tilted her head and muttered.
Just like leveling up in an RPG game, we became quite strong through fighting.
Even Hoyoung was able to hit a polo ball with a modified hammer.
The items discovered during reconnaissance were selected and brought to Building 110.
For groceries, I mainly packed food items that needed to be frozen, and for the rest of the items, I just made a list of where each item was.
Among them, the most important things to pack were energy-related equipment such as camping generators and solar panels.
After looking into it, I found out that there were several houses in other neighborhoods that had solar panels installed.
And there were a few houses where professional campers lived, enough to have their own camping generators.
The generators had better output than expected.
The only problem is oil.
If the ink separated by heat is real oil, it could provide electricity in abundance, if not as abundantly as the previous world, by cross-using generators and solar panels.
The reconnaissance ended sooner than expected because the hunting was easy.
I was going to let them rest because I was planning to open the shield and go out tomorrow, but the kids were too energetic.
Well then, let’s give him some more work to do.
A good idea came to me while I was doing reconnaissance.
I made a vegetable garden on my veranda.
I didn’t plant the plants for my children’s emotional development, but after seeing some homes growing sprouts in pots, I thought about growing them myself.
While managing my diet, I was very disappointed that there were no fresh vegetables.
Of course, no pretty flowers or plants were planted in the veranda garden.
Only edible vegetables and fruits were selected.
If you walk around the houses, you can often find vegetable and fruit seeds in the corners of shoe cabinets or pantries.
And there were already several houses that had cultivated excellent veranda gardens.
Not only vegetables such as lettuce, chicory, and carrots, but also fruit trees were growing there.
Fortunately, the water monsters don’t seem to care about plants and don’t damage them like they do household appliances or objects, but because they’ve been neglected for so long, the vegetables and trees have withered and look almost dead.
But, perhaps because of its tenacity, it quickly came back to life when watered.
We have been raking the soil out of the flower pots.
There were more houses with flower pots than I thought, so it was difficult to move them, but there was still soil left over, filling the veranda up to calf height.
Just touching the soil rather than the water made me feel better.
Maybe that’s why, even though it must have been hard, the children’s expressions were bright, as if they were playing in the dirt.
If I get a chance later, I should try making a garden on the rooftop.
Kids will fall backwards when they hear this. Hehe.
After dinner, I washed the cherry tomatoes and put them out.
It was taken from the tomato tree I planted today.
The kids were impressed by the red cherry tomatoes, as if they were seeing a dessert made by a professional pastry chef.
“Wow! I thought I’d never eat cherry tomatoes again.”
“Wow! This juice is so sweet.”
“I also planted strawberry seedlings, so look forward to it.”
The children cheered at my words.
“Strawberries! Strawberries!”
I used a charger and generator charged by solar panels to keep the lights bright.
It was as if we had returned to the past world, with the darkness disappearing and light becoming apparent.
Once the generator is running there are a lot of things you can do.
I ran the washing machine with fresh water drawn from the well and played music on the stereo.
And we watched a movie with the kids on a large screen with a beam projector.
The children’s faces lit up as if they had just returned home.
This is really like going back to the peaceful past.
The kids must have been tired, because they fell asleep while watching the movie, but they slept soundly for the first time in a long time without screaming or being pressed by the scissors like before.
