Episode 44: A Funny Press Conference
“As you said, fingerprints were found on the knife used to kill the victim, Ha Myeong-jun.”
Do Hyeon-gwang lifted the ballpoint pen in front of him.
“Imagine this is a knife. The pen part is the blade, and the back is the handle. There are three fingerprints in total: the thumb, the index finger, and the middle finger.”
He demonstrated this by holding up a ballpoint pen to reporters as he spoke.
“The thumb print was found on the left side of the handle, and the index and middle fingers were found on the right side of the handle. And all three prints were facing downward. So how was the knife held?”
The reporters each held a pen or cell phone and tried to match the hand position as explained. Reporter Shin Eun-ju also participated, but it wasn’t easy. The fingers were split in two, and the direction of the fingers had to be matched.
The reason she and other reporters had such a hard time was simple. They all tried to hold the pen in a circular motion, like holding a knife to stab someone. In that state, it was impossible to make the fingerprints all face downward.
Do Hyeon-gwang, who was watching the reporters frantically holding and putting down their pens, opened his mouth.
“Let me show you.”
He lifted the end of the pen gently, as if picking up dirty trash, using only his thumb, index finger, and middle finger.
“You would have held it like this. To hold it with the fingerprints of your three fingers facing downwards. But would it have been possible to stab someone with a knife held like this?”
Do Hyun-kwang waved the pen in front of Hong Min-woo’s eyes with a slightly mocking expression. Hong Min-woo coughed in vain with a slightly red face.
“This is just a fingerprint left when you lift and move it slightly. You can never swing the sword enough to kill someone while holding it like this.”
Do Hyun-kwang continued the press conference smoothly with a pleasant voice and manner.
“It is true that fingerprints and DNA were found on the knife, but based on various circumstances, our conclusion is that the janitor, Yoon Ki-seok, is not the culprit.”
“Then Mr. Park Min-sik… … .”
Do Hyeon-gwang cut off the words as the hand rose again.
“Excuse me. You keep raising your hand and asking questions. Could you at least tell me your affiliation and name?”
He didn’t look particularly upset. He just seemed curious about his affiliation. Hong Min-woo tilted his head back and spoke.
“ Hong Min-woo is here. Let me ask you another question. So, does that mean there is solid evidence that Park Min-sik is the culprit?”
Reporter Hong Min-woo provoked Do Hyeon-gwang, but this time too he took it easy.
“Yes, that’s right, Reporter Hong Min-woo. Two DNAs were found on the knife. The second DNA was found to be that of Park Min-sik.”
“no way.”
Reporter Hong Min-woo openly laughed.
“You said earlier that Yoon Ki-seok is not the culprit even though fingerprints and DNA were found on the knife. Then you say that the only evidence that Park Min-sik is the culprit is DNA. Doesn’t that make sense? Haven’t you ever thought about that, Prosecutor?”
A faint laugh spread among the reporters.
“And I understand that Park Min-sik’s name wasn’t even mentioned during the police investigation. Where did this person suddenly appear?”
Do Hyeon-gwang, who was trying to say something with a stern face, was just staring blankly in front of him.
‘What, did he just get attacked and lose his mind?’
Reporter Shin Eun-ju was worried for a moment, wondering if he had fainted while standing, but Do Hyeon-gwang soon looked straight ahead again. For some reason, he seemed more relaxed than before.
“Park Min-sik was hospitalized after a traffic accident occurred nearby while he was escaping the scene of a murder. That’s why he was able to escape the police investigation at first.”
Car accident?
The hands of the reporters tapping away at their laptops were getting faster.
“In addition to DNA, there is a lot of evidence, including Park Min-sik’s jacket with traces of the victim’s blood on it and CCTV footage of him luring Ha Myung-jun into the alley.
Additionally, while reviewing the autopsy report, we were able to obtain evidence that the criminal had threatened Ha Myung-jun, and through questioning him, we were able to elicit a confession from Park Min-sik that he had killed Ha Myung-jun.”
As expected, whispers spread among the reporters.
“The autopsy report? You found out about the threats by looking at it?”
“That’s ridiculous. How can you figure that out just by looking at it?”
“Could it be that you found out by reading the witness statement?”
“Are you confused about what you’re saying?”
Reporter Hong Min-woo’s hand went up again as if driving a wedge into the ground.
“You said that after reading the autopsy report, you found out that Ha Myung-jun was threatened?”
“Yes, that’s right.”
“How could you know that? You wouldn’t have been able to tell that just by looking at the autopsy report. Are you confusing it with something else? You’re a novice examiner.”
The reporters burst into laughter at the mention of a rookie prosecutor. However, Do Hyeon-gwang still looked relaxed.
“They say that a pig’s eyes only see pigs, and a Buddha’s eyes only see Buddha. I guess you get confused about a lot of things.”
He displayed the autopsy report by Dr. Ha Myeong-jun on a large screen.
“I knew it the moment I saw it. I wonder if our reporter Hong Min-woo knows it? He might not. This is something that only good people can see.”
“What?”
When reporter Hong Min-woo got angry, laughter erupted among the reporters. Since he did not have a good reputation among the people around him, the other reporters did not feel particularly sorry for him when he was treated in front of Do Hyeon-gwang.
Prosecutor Do Hyeon-gwang continued speaking while looking at the autopsy report.
“The victim’s injuries were largely divided into the abdomen and neck. The fatal injuries were three stab wounds to the abdomen.”
Up to this point, there was nothing difficult, so the reporters all nodded and followed along.
“But I noticed the wound on his neck. Why? Why on earth? A wound only 0.2 centimeters deep on his neck?”
The reporters were completely absorbed in Do Hyeon-gwang’s briefing, and they all forgot to type and just stared at the screen.
Someone was measuring the length with their thumb and index finger.
“0.2cm is about this much, right?”
“If it’s to that extent, isn’t it just that you got hurt somewhere else?”
“It’s not the length, it’s the depth that’s 0.2. It’s not a deep cut, is it?”
“Why is this important?”
As the reporters’ curiosity reached its peak, Do Hyeon-gwang slowly came down to the podium with a ballpoint pen in his hand. He waved the pen in front of the people and said.
“Let’s say this pen is a knife. If there was a violent struggle, and the victim dodged the knife, the wound would have been longer and messier. This clean wound is not a stab wound.”
When he stopped in front of reporter Hong Min-woo, all the reporters behind him also stuck their heads out and watched him.
“If you want to make a 0.2cm deep wound with a knife, you can’t do it by stabbing. This isn’t a stab or cut wound, it’s a cut with a knife. Like this.”
Do Hyun-kwang suddenly put a ballpoint pen on the left side of Hong Min-woo’s neck. He didn’t stab him with the pen part, but rather put the long side of the pen against his neck.
“Hey, hey.”
When Hong Min-woo flinched in surprise, the reporters burst into laughter again.
“Please stay still. I’m explaining things to you right now.”
Do Hyeon-gwang whispered softly to Hong Min-woo and spoke while still holding the pen to Hong Min-woo’s neck.
“So, there’s a knife to my throat. What does that mean?”
As he said that, Do Hyun-kwang placed the ballpoint pen on Hong Min-woo’s neck and pressed it a little more gently. Hong Min-woo, who was looking up at Do Hyun-kwang with a slightly frozen expression, answered blankly.
“Who is threatening me with a knife?”
“That’s right! That’s it. This wound is proof that he threatened you with a knife!”
A collective exclamation of “Ah!” erupted among the reporters.
“Is that guy a former coroner?”
“You figured this out just by looking at the autopsy report?”
“Is this really a test?”
Reporter Shin Eun-ju also had no choice but to open her mouth.
‘Wow. You figured that out like that? Are you really that talented?’
But the people gathered here were reporters. That means they weren’t just surprised. Soon after, a group of people started typing on their laptop keyboards. That’s because they all started furiously writing articles.
The camera flashes went off on Do Hyun-kwang’s smiling face.
* * *
‘As expected. Everyone is absorbed in my briefing.’
[Don’t you think that this Aliotte has a lot of credit for it?]
‘Okay. I’ll give you credit this time.’
The right pace for speaking, the timing for hitting and running away, and even when to present evidence. Aliotta gave me advice through optimal analysis. Thanks to him, I became a master of press conferences.
At first, the reporters were not friendly to me. That was somewhat expected. Today, this place was created by Na Kang-jin. They must have found it funny that a rookie prosecutor suddenly barged in.
But now I was completely in control of the atmosphere of the press conference. The reporters started to write articles on their laptops while looking at me.
[Now let’s move on to the next one.]
‘okay!’
I went up to the stage again and continued speaking.
“As I said, Park Min-sik went to Ha Myung-jun with a knife and threatened him, and then ended up stabbing him to death. Park Min-sik’s DNA was found on the knife, and this is something he confessed to.”
A reporter raised his hand and asked a question.
“What was the threat? Money? Or a woman?”
When we talk about threats, these two things usually come to mind: robbery and murder, or a love affair.
“It’s drugs.”
As expected, the reporters were in an uproar.
“What do you mean drugs?”
“Why are there drugs here?”
“Are you saying the culprit was on drugs?”
As I got closer to the microphone, I felt all the reporters holding their breath and focusing their attention on me.
“Yong Han Oriental Medical Clinic was actually a drug dealer and supplier. Oriental medical doctor Ha Myeong-jun was actually a drug supplier. He used his Oriental medical clinic as a dealer. It was determined that the criminal threatened the victim, Ha Myeong-jun, in relation to purchasing drugs, which then escalated into murder.”
For a moment, the conference room was silent. It was supposed to be a briefing on a murder case, but drugs?
Then, soon, the commotion grew louder.
“What do you mean drugs?”
“The Oriental medicine clinic was a drug dealer?”
“Hey, no way. Isn’t that my father’s regular clinic?”
To satisfy people’s curiosity, Wi Jun-woo displayed the prepared materials on the screen. It was evidence that he had discovered by running around sweating all morning and early afternoon, raiding the homes of oriental medicine clinics and oriental medicine doctors.
“Now, the screen you are seeing now is the evidence we found when we raided the ‘Yong Han Oriental Clinic’ this morning. As you can see, you can see various drugs and transaction ledgers.”
Suddenly, camera flashes went off. The reporters all bowed their heads and pressed their foreheads against mine, and the sound of typing on laptop keyboards filled the conference room.
“We have also started summoning and questioning the staff of the Oriental Medicine Clinic in relation to drug dealing. We will need to investigate the suppliers and buyers further, but for now, it has been proven that the Oriental Medicine Clinic was used as a drug dealer.”
[Oh. Okay, okay. It feels like all the reporters have fallen for Hyungwang?]
‘Of course. He solved the murder case with his genius brain, and on top of that, he exposed the drug dealer.’
[Everyone, bow down to Hyungwang!]
‘Don’t overdo it.’
[yes.]
At the back of the conference room, filled with reporters busy writing articles, Director Jang Gi-tae was looking at me with a proud expression.
‘Are you crying?’
[If that’s the case, it would be tears of relief. It’s a relief that I didn’t make a mistake, something like that.]
From that evening onwards, the Internet was flooded with articles about the murder of the doctor of Oriental medicine.
Among them were articles about the dangers of drugs.
But what caught people’s eyes the most was 0.2cm.
I just sat down at the table that was set for me and ate deliciously. Oh my, I’m full. Ugh.
