Episode 54: Prosecutor Do Hyeon-kwang’s Vampire Theory
The three-story academy building was quiet because it was closed for business. Wi Jun-woo and I stepped over the yellow police tape and entered the building.
I thought there wouldn’t be much of a disruption to business since it wasn’t a brutal stabbing incident, even though someone had died. The students, being sensitive adolescents, refused to go up to the classroom on the stairs where someone had died.
“I saw this.”
Wi Jun-woo said, looking around the bottom of the stairs.
“I guess it rolled from up there and fell here.”
The stairs weren’t that narrow, but if I had fallen down the cement stairs, I would have inevitably suffered a serious head injury.
“Where do you think you hit your head when you fell down the stairs? The wall? The railing? The edge of the stairs?”
[Judging by the wound on the back of the head noted on the death certificate, it appears that the head was hit against a hard, angular surface.]
‘If it’s a hard, sharp place, it’s probably the corner of a staircase, right?’
Wi Jun-woo also seemed to have the same idea as he pointed to the bottom of the stairs.
“Of course you wouldn’t have hit your head on the edge of the stairs. Could you have hit your head against the wall here? Oh, I guess it would have been possible if you had pushed it against the wall.”
He spoke to Wi Jun-woo, who was tilting his head and thinking.
“Chief, would you like to roll down the stairs? I think it would help with the simulation.”
“I’ll have to give that to the inspector. If you come down, I’ll write it down in great detail.”
We chattered for a while and then got down to looking for evidence.
“It looks like it hit the floor, but let’s take a good look at the walls and the railing.”
“So what are you looking for here, Inspector?”
“It’s about finding the truth of the incident.”
“Stop talking about empty talk. What specifically should I be looking for?”
“A clue that will lead us to the truth of the case… … .”
“You don’t know either, inspector?”
What is that? Is that a laugh?
“Chief, every crime scene leaves behind evidence.”
“Detective So Hae-jin said the same thing. He said that no evidence was found here.”
“You shouldn’t take that word for it. If it’s a proper examination, you have to see it with your own eyes.”
“Pfft. A proper inspection? Oh, yes.”
Wi Jun-woo, who had been laughing, quickly turned his back and bent down as if he was investigating me diligently when he met my murderous gaze.
When Wi Jun-woo appeared like that, I was filled with the determination to find evidence. But the problem was that I didn’t even know what to look for.
‘If you fell down the stairs, something might have been left on the stairs or the floor.’
[There isn’t much of a trace left.]
‘Look at the wall carefully. Is there a railing or something like that?’
[doesn’t exist.]
Aliotta turned on the ‘blacklight’ and searched the stairs and floor thoroughly, but there was no evidence left at the scene. It wasn’t like there was blood flowing profusely to begin with, and even that seemed to have been cleaned up by now.
We searched the first floor and the stairs thoroughly with Wijunwoo and Aliotta, but we couldn’t find even a single speck of dust. After bending down and searching the floor for a while, we eventually gave up and sat down on the floor.
“Look, inspector. They say the scene tells the truth or something, but there are also scenes like this where nothing comes out.”
I couldn’t just sit still because Wi Jun-woo was acting like he was better than everyone else and secretly harassing me.
“That’s true. What is this? It looks like the manager’s girlfriend.”
“Yes? My girlfriend?”
“No matter how hard I look for it, I can’t see it. It’s not there, it’s not there.”
“… … .”
To avoid Wi Jun-woo’s sharp gaze that was glaring at me, I stood up from my seat and wandered around aimlessly. Sometimes, when I wander around like this without thinking, brilliant ideas come to me.
Wi Jun-woo, who had been glaring at me for a while, sat down on the stairs and took out his cell phone. I didn’t say anything and just walked back and forth in front of him. I thought there would definitely be something if I went to the scene.
It felt like something was right in front of me, but I couldn’t quite figure out what it was.
I thought it would be a bit boring to just go back and forth, so I stopped in place and started doing squats.
[… … Hyun Gwang. What are you doing?]
‘Can’t you see? I’m exercising.’
[So why are you doing that exercise now? And wearing a suit at that?]
‘That’s because I can’t set aside time to exercise. Just stay still. Something might come to mind.’
“That crazy guy.”
I turned my head at the sound coming from behind me.
“Chief. Are you talking to me like that? Isn’t this crossing the line? Even if I’m doing squats instead of conducting an investigation… … .”
“You were doing squats? Not while investigating? You’re not crazy.”
Wi Jun-woo looked at him with a dumbfounded expression.
“Oh, you didn’t know? Then what did that crazy guy say?”
“Look at this. There are many crazy people besides you, inspector.”
Wi Jun-woo handed me his cell phone. Min Jong-guk’s SNS was on the screen.
There was a photo of Min Jong-guk and Lee Seung-ho smiling brightly while making a V sign with their friends. One friend’s nose was covered in whipped cream, and there was a cake in front of them. There was also a bottle of alcohol in the corner of the photo.

“That crazy guy.”
“Would they want to do something like that when someone died because of them?”
“They’re guys who don’t really think about anything. Their dad takes care of everything for them.”
After giving the phone back to Wi Jun-woo, I started walking back and forth in front of the stairs again.
[Hyun-kwang. There’s nothing here, so let’s go back for now. Since we received the autopsy report from Detective So-hae-jin, I think it would be more appropriate to prepare for the next trial based on that.]
‘You don’t know anything because you’re just a tin can. Humans don’t always live by doing only what’s reasonable. Especially not a crazy guy like me.’
I’ve always been the type to trust my intuition and act accordingly. Since Aliotta takes care of the rational and logical things, I think I can trust my intuition a little more.
I definitely thought there would be something there if I went to the scene.
I replayed the incident in my head.
While fighting and punching each other in the face, one of them rolled down the stairs. Usually, the person would panic and just run away, but Min Jong-guk calmly called the police and 119.
Since there were marks on his face from a fight anyway, I figured that even if I told him that my friend had misstepped, he wouldn’t believe me. I guess my father, who is a lawyer, helped me a lot.
He responded very calmly. Whether it was Min Jong-guk or his father. He calmly and coolly sorted out the situation.
If he had been so calm and collected, what else would he have done? Before the police or the ambulance arrived… … .
‘!’
Suddenly realizing something, I stopped walking and approached Wi Jun-woo.
“Chief.”
“yes?”
“You know what? Falling means having wings.”
“What the hell is this?”
“Oh, right. I should have spoken to the section chief on his level. I spoke too highly.”
After a moment of self-reflection, I spoke again.
“Chief, do you know what stocks and coins have in common?”
At that moment, Wei Jun-woo’s eyes trembled, and he lowered his head with a darker expression.
“… … Is it true that I will fall if I have an accident?”
“I got bitten.”
“It’s amazing.”
“cheer up.”
“Ugh.”
I continued speaking while looking at Wi Jun-woo, who was sighing.
“What stocks and coins have in common. When you buy them, they are definitely at their peak, but after you buy them, they hit bottom.”
“What does that have to do with this case? Kids aren’t going to trade stocks.”
“It does matter.”
I pointed upstairs with my finger.
“Everything that falls to the ground starts from above.”
“ah?”
“If he fell down the stairs, that means the original scene was upstairs.”
“Oh, that’s right! Why didn’t I think of that?”
“Everyone is focusing on the first floor where the body was first found. Let’s go to the second floor.”
I went up to the second floor with Wi Jun-woo, who was pouring out his admiration. There were classrooms in the hallway on the second floor, and there was a wide space at the top of the stairs.
‘Aliotta, please give me the blacklight.’
[okay!]
In an instant, my vision darkened. It wasn’t complete darkness, but I could still perceive my surroundings. But there was no blood on the walls or the floor.
Although, occasionally, you would see things that glowed with a blue fluorescent light.
[I think that’s a needle.]
‘Why on earth are those kids spitting in the hallways?’
There was saliva, but no traces of blood were visible.
‘I’ve said all sorts of cool things to Wi Jun-woo, so I can’t just back out like this.’
I called out to Wi Jun-woo, who was wandering around the second floor hallway investigating.
“Chief, let’s go upstairs.”
“Further up from here?”
“I’m talking about stocks. I thought I got in because it was at a high, but it turns out there are times when I got in while holding onto the top knot.”
“Oh my, the topknot. Oh my.”
Wi Jun-woo’s sigh, which was full of experience, hit the floor.
“… … That’s right. Let’s go to the third floor.”
“yes.”
After climbing one more flight of stairs, we arrived at the third floor. The hallway lined with classrooms and the wide space above the stairs were exactly the same as the second floor. And.
“bingo!”
I saw the bloodstain I was looking for. There wasn’t much left on the floor, as many people had walked by and cleaned it. On the wall, there were faint, bright spots of blue fluorescent light.
“What’s Bingo? There’s nothing here either. Aren’t we going to end up on the rooftop like this?”
It was obvious that Wi Jun-woo couldn’t see anything without Aliotta. I turned off the black light and attacked Wi Jun-woo.
“Oh my. How can you have such a lack of faith? Don’t you know that those who believe are blessed?”
“I don’t know about anything else, but the stock market can’t be managed with faith alone.”
I said, pointing to the wall.
“Here and here. Do you see it?”
Wi Jun-woo came closer and looked at her with his eyes wide open, exclaiming in admiration.
“Wow, that was a bloodstain. How did you figure it out?”
“Because I’m a genius?”
“Hey. I don’t think that’s right.”
Wi Jun-woo, who had been taking pictures of the wall I was pointing at with his camera, suddenly became serious and looked at me.
“By any chance, inspector… … .”
“yes?”
“Are you… a vampire?”
“Huh? What the hell is this?”
Suddenly, Aliotta let out a sigh.
[No, these people called prosecutors and investigators. They just keep talking nonsense to each other. Can they work together like that?]
‘Don’t worry. I have fantastic breathing skills.’
[It is a breath of fresh air.]
Behind Aliota, who was looking up at the sky with a sigh, Wei Junwoo spoke with a serious face.
“I was wondering if you’re a vampire and have a good sense of smell for blood. You know, you can’t even see it with your eyes, but you’re incredibly good at finding bloodstains.”
“Yes, well. There, there, take good pictures. Did you bring the cotton swabs and plastic? Please collect the evidence well.”
“yes.”
“Can you complete this analysis before the next trial?”
“It will be possible. Don’t worry.”
While Wi Jun-woo was diligently collecting bloodstains from the wall, I looked around closely again. If there were bloodstains on the wall, then this must be the scene of the crime. What on earth happened here?
[Oh. It’s over there. Hyungwang, look over there!]
‘where?’
[Over there, there’s a window frame.]
Among the classrooms lined up in the hallway, the one closest to the stairs. Aliotta pointed to one of the windows facing the hallway.
When I got closer, I saw that the wooden window frame was a bit old, and the paint was peeling off here and there, and the wood was slightly raised. And where Aliotta pointed.
‘Huh? Is that a bloodstain?’
It wasn’t visible when I just looked at it with my eyes. When Aliotta zoomed in and showed it to me, I could see blood in the cracks between the trees that were slightly raised.
It didn’t end there. Aliotta floated the window frame to the left of my vision, and the photo of Sung Jun-ho’s wound on the back of his head that was in the autopsy report to the right of my vision.
The window frame spun around as if it was Photoshopped, then moved towards Sung Jun-ho’s head and overlapped him.
[We would have to take a sample to be sure, or examine the marks left on the window frame. But the laceration on the back of Seong Jun-ho’s head appears to have been caused by hitting the window frame.]
I thought it was a wound from hitting the edge of the stairs or the floor. If evidence such as scalp tissue or hair roots as well as bloodstains were found on the window frame, then Aliotta’s analysis would be correct.
“Chief, please take a look here too.”
“yes.”
“Do you see this on the window frame? There’s a crack in the wood here. Please secure this as evidence as well.”
“Hey. I told you, you’re a real vampire.”
Wi Jun-woo muttered and began to diligently take pictures and collect evidence. At that time.
“What are you guys doing?”
“Eww.”
We were startled by a voice suddenly heard from behind.
