The Mad Prosecutor Picked Up AI - Chapter 9

Episode 9 Three Ways to Seoul
As Na Kang-jin left the office with heavy steps, Rep. Baek Cheon-soo urged me again.
“How did you find this evidence?”
“Okay, explain in detail. I’d like to hear how you solved the case.”
If I had to personally come forward and explain to the 4th-term National Assembly member and the head of the local office, that is, give a briefing, other rookie prosecutors would probably freeze and not even open their mouths.
It is natural to feel very nervous and anxious about making mistakes.
But, well. What’s there to be nervous about?
If you make a mistake, you just think, “I guess I made a mistake.”
When did I ever live my life caring about anyone’s feelings?
I took a deep breath.
It makes sense for me to explain it to you if you want to hear it.
I immediately started to open my mouth.
“Among the cases assigned to me was the theft of bracken fern.”
“It’s a bracken fern thief.”
“yes.”
“Well, he’s still a new prosecutor.”
The chief nodded as if he understood. As a new prosecutor, you tend to be assigned to more minor cases that require a lot of paperwork rather than major cases.
“While investigating the case, I happened to go to the scene of the bracken theft.”
“What? You went out to the scene?”
“yes.”
Chief Park Seong-min’s eyes widened.
“Was there a lot of theft? Was it perhaps an organized theft?”
“No, that’s not true. It was a case where the neighbor accused me of stealing a handful of bracken.”
“Ha, a handful?”
The chief of the branch office looked back at Chief Jang Gi-tae. He couldn’t open his mouth because Assemblyman Baek Cheon-su was next to him, but it was obvious what he was saying with his eyes.
Do you usually go to the scene to investigate a case of bracken theft? And just because a handful of them are missing? In cases like this, you just report them on paper and end the investigation.
When the branch manager could not continue speaking, Rep. Baek Cheon-su asked.
“Do prosecutors actually go to the scene for such… cases? I didn’t know.”
“That’s not it… … .”
Chief Park Sung-min tilted his head. He knew better than anyone that prosecutors rarely go out to investigate on-site.
The number of cases that a prosecutor has to handle per month is at least 100, and at most, 200 to 300.
I don’t have time to dwell on cases that are so overwhelming that I can’t even read about them. Maybe it’s a murder case, a big corruption case, or a drug case.
Most minor incidents are handled using only the documents submitted by the police.
There would not be a single prosecutor in South Korea who would be sober enough to go on a field investigation into a theft case, especially one involving theft of a handful of bracken ferns that were not valuable items.
“Dogeom, is there any reason why you went to the scene yourself?”
“The incident was a bit strange.”
“What was strange?”
Chief Park Seong-min leaned forward and, as if that wasn’t enough, he sat right next to the edge of the sofa.
That means there is a lot of interest in this incident.
“The amount of bracken that was stolen was only a handful. In fact, this amount could have been eaten by rabbits. However, the amount of bracken that was trampled and damaged was even greater.”
“I stepped on it… … .”
“A thief would steal just a little bit and then trample on the rest. This means that he had no intention of stealing in the first place.”
“Yeah, yeah.”
As Chief Park Sung-min nodded in agreement, Chief Jang Gi-tae also nodded repeatedly like a nodding doll placed in a car.
Even Assemblyman Baek Cheon-soo, who seemed to not understand what we were saying, nodded his head while looking back and forth between me and the branch chief.
“So I thought I absolutely had to go to the scene. There were no photos of the scene in the documents that the police sent me.”
“Oh, right. Our prosecutors need to pay attention to even the parts that the police missed.”
[The police may not have felt the need to go to the scene again to take pictures since there is CCTV footage.]
‘There’s no need to make excuses instead.’
The hologram teased him, but he simply ignored it and continued talking.
“When I went to the scene, there were still small marks left by high heels.”
“Oh, really?”
“Hey, you even found the high heel marks, sword?”
[When did you say it was an umbrella tip mark? Hehehe.]
“Oh, be quiet!”
“… … .”
hmm.
The last words were actually directed at the hologram that was nagging at him, but suddenly the office became quiet.
It looks like the mouth of Chief Jang Gi-tae, who spoke last, is sticking out a little bit?
Are you crazy?
As the mood in the office died down, Chief Park Sung-min took my side.
“Yes, Chief Jang. The sword is very excited and is explaining things, so don’t interrupt and just stay still.”
It wasn’t that Chief Jang Gi-tae’s words were particularly disturbing.
Instead of raising my shield, I just shrugged.
“So, what happened?”
“I looked closely at the area and saw that the area around the high heel marks was covered with dirt in a fine, even pattern.”
“Oh. Subtly?”
“yes.”
“Huh. It’s subtle.”
Chief Park Sung-min shook his head with an expression of admiration.
[I said, ‘It’s strangely evenly spread out.’]
‘Strangely or subtly. Whether it’s a coincidence or a match. As long as I solve the case, what does it matter?’
“How did you figure out that subtle difference?”
“Um… … . Did you see it for yourself?”
“What? Well, that’s why on-site investigations are important.”
When I answered by pointing to my face with my finger, Chief Park Sung-min seemed to think that was an odd answer.
I was referring to the glasses.
The artificial intelligence found out by seeing it for itself.
[Why don’t you understand even if I tell you? No one knows my achievements. Oh, what a sad life.]
As the hologram was lamenting about his life, Rep. Baek Cheon-soo looked at the black box chip on the table and asked.
“Did this come from somewhere slightly different?”
“Yes. As soon as I saw it, I immediately thought it was related to this hit-and-run incident. The road leading to the bracken field was the road where the accident occurred.”
“Hey, you’re a great detective, you’re a great detective.”
“There was such a talented person.”
“This is the guy I’m bringing with me, Chief.”
Assemblyman Baek Cheon-su, District Chief Park Seong-min, and Deputy Director Jang Gi-tae looked at me with pleasure without anyone having to say anything first.
I also smiled happily.
* * *
‘What a strange guy.’
Chief Park Seong-min thought of Do Hyeon-gwang, who had left the office a little while ago.
I had often heard reports that the new recruit was a headache. Since it was unlikely that anyone with exceptional talent would be assigned to a rural area like this, I didn’t pay much attention to it.
When he pushed open the office door and barged in earlier, I thought, “What kind of crazy person is that?”
I never thought that the hit-and-run case involving Rep. Baek Cheon-soo’s granddaughter would be resolved so quickly.
Not being able to solve it won’t hurt his career, but this is the case of Rep. Baek Cheon-soo. He’s a four-term member of the National Assembly.
You can’t make connections like this anywhere else. In other words, if it weren’t for his granddaughter, would Baek Cheon-su have come all the way to this rural area?
You probably didn’t even know there was a branch office in Gunnae-myeon.
Thanks to Do Hyeon-gwang solving the case, he gained a strong connection with Assemblyman Baek Cheon-soo.
Looking at your happy expression earlier, I thought you would take my side at some point.
‘Nahujin, I almost got into big trouble because of that guy.’
Didn’t you almost get humiliated in front of Rep. Baek Cheon-soo? You almost indicted an innocent citizen. Of course, it’s a problem that an innocent citizen has already been arrested and investigated.
I’m so nervous about my granddaughter, but if I can’t catch the hit-and-run driver and catch some random guy, and he gets released as innocent, I’m worried.
Park Sung-min shook his head as if he didn’t even want to think about it, then sighed.
‘But I’m the one who should be sent to Seoul.’
In the military, the only person who can be put forward is Na Kang-jin. It’s not because he’s my friend’s son. He has that kind of academic background, that kind of ability, and the ambition he holds in his heart.
You can’t kick someone out just because they made a mistake once.
If you have to send someone to Seoul, it should be Na Kang-jin. Although he contributed greatly to this case, Do Hyeon-gwang, who has no academic background and barely solved this case, is out of the question.
‘If you see one, you know ten. It’s obvious when you see them barging into the branch manager’s office without even calling.’
I can’t send such a shameless guy to hell.
As for Do Hyun-kwang, you can just give him a raise for his hard work. Whether you like it or not, it’s still Na Kang-jin who has to go to Seoul.
* * *
Chief Jang Gi-tae stood by the window and looked outside. He saw the blue sky and the fields. If he continued along the road ahead, he would see the sea in less than 30 minutes.
Gunnae-myeon is a small place. It is a place where you can’t find any trace of the city.
A place where there are far more people working in the fields or at the sea in the sun than people wearing ties working in high-rise buildings.
A place where there are more older people than young people.
He also felt like he was going to die when he first came here. Now he’s adapted a lot. No, what’s the adaptation? In fact, it’s gotten better.
Now I wonder how I ever lived in that stuffy and dreary city of Seoul.
‘But, that guy will be different.’
Na Kang-jin, sitting on the sofa, had been bowing his head since a while ago.
“There’s nothing special about going to Seoul. There are a lot of people, it’s noisy, and the traffic is just horrible.”
“I really want to go to Seoul.”
“I know because I’ve been there for a long time, it’s not a place you can go and hang yourself.”
“But you’ve been there, sir. That’s why you’re saying that.”
Chief Jang Gi-tae came and sat down at the head table.
“Yeah, if only they had solved that hit-and-run case.”
“That, that’s it. The sword is lucky.”
“Luck is a skill.”
“I never thought that my girlfriend was the culprit.”
Manager Jang Gi-tae shouted.
“Didn’t you investigate the people around you? If you decide that this guy is the culprit and investigate him, this is how things like this happen!”
“I did some research on the people around me. Well, my girlfriend said she doesn’t know how to drive… … .”
“I’m a pro. Is this the first time I’ve seen an unlicensed hit-and-run accident while inspecting? Why are you like this, like an amateur?”
“sorry.”
Chief Jang Gi-tae let out a long sigh. Deciding on a criminal in advance and investigating him. This is something that prosecutors must be most careful about.
But once I become somewhat familiar with the case, I unconsciously pick out the culprit and start investigating him. Thinking, ‘It’s that guy.’
Fortunately, the sword caught the real culprit, so it was a good thing. If I had been too ambitious, I would have spilled the shit on him too.
I really want to give you a big slap in the face.
I would have figured it out if I had done this much.
It’s not that I particularly like Na Kang-jin more. However, everyone knows that my father’s friend, Chief Park Sung-min, is supporting Na Kang-jin.
Under the secret push of the chief, he unknowingly took care of big cases for Na Kang-jin. If he had no skills at all, I wouldn’t know, but Na Kang-jin was greedy and his skills were good enough to help him.
This time, I made a mistake because I was blinded by greed. No matter what anyone says, the person who was most likely to succeed in Seoul was Na Kang-jin.
Wouldn’t it be a good thing for him if his subordinate prosecutor later succeeds in Seoul?
“Right now, there are three main ways for a pro to go to Seoul.”
When he heard that there was a road, Na Kang-jin straightened his back and adjusted his posture.
“First, solve the big case.”
“If it’s a big deal, how much?”
“It would have to be at least a murder case, right?”
“ah.”
A murder case. I don’t know if it would be different in a big city, but a murder case in this quiet county.
Well, this is a place where people live, so there may be murders, but it’s not like you can go to Seoul and expect a murder to happen.
As Na Kang-jin’s expression became gloomy, Manager Jang Gi-tae continued speaking.
“The second is the one that catches the eye of the prosecutor general.”
“Not the chief of the police station, but the chief prosecutor?”
“The chief already noticed it. He’s my dad’s friend.”
“… … .”
“But if I’m going to do it, I’d rather get noticed by the Chief Prosecutor of the Onju District Prosecutors’ Office than by the Chief Prosecutor.”
The Onju District Public Prosecutor’s Office is the headquarters of the Gunnae-myeon branch office. Naturally, it is large in scale, and the chief prosecutor has more influence than a single branch office head.
But this time too, Na Kang-jin shook his head.
If you catch his eye, it might give you the strength to move to Seoul when you are next posted. But how could you catch the eye of the chief prosecutor of the Onju District Prosecutors’ Office, who is not even in the same building?
“The last third one will be in the newspaper.”
“Is it a newspaper?”
“It doesn’t have to be a major media outlet. Even a small local newspaper will do. As soon as an article is published, it becomes data when reviewing documents.”
Na Kang-jin buried his head in his hands.
“Oh my, nothing is easy.”
“Then, did you think that going to Seoul was just a matter of buying a train ticket?”
“Ugh.”
Chief Jang Gi-tae shook his head as he watched Na Kang-jin screaming in pain.
This guy or that guy!
They don’t know it yet, but sooner or later all three of these will come true.
That’s not Na Kang-jin though.
