Time Mansour - Chapter 134

Episode 134 I Developed Alone
“Okay. Let’s go.”
I took a deep breath and took a step forward.
I visited the Ive data center to join the Kubernetes project in earnest.
A stale air hung in the office. Hundreds of developers were typing on their keyboards, expressionless.
The atmosphere is tense. I glanced around and passed through the partition. The heat from my body was rising. I slightly unzipped my windbreaker.
As I entered the conference room in the corner, a stranger reached out his hand to me.
“Hello. This is Kwak Hyung-tae, the head of the development team.”
There are no familiar faces in the conference room. It’s the same not only for the development team, but also for the network team and other teams. It seems like all the department heads and team leaders have been replaced.
‘I have a strong feeling.’
I felt anxious from the first time we met. Did the team leaders change this much in just one year?
While shaking hands, I kept tilting my head inwardly. With that question still in my heart, I started giving a brief explanation using the materials I had prepared.
That’s what it was.
“Oh my. The concept is too difficult. This is our first time trying this product.”
Every time I explained, everyone tilted their heads in agreement.
“That’s right. We’re not familiar with data products…”
After that, the staff’s questions poured in. I bit my lips tightly to control my expression. It’s definitely not because I’m angry.
“···”
Rather than being angry, I was dumbfounded.
“We don’t have much understanding of databases, so it seems like it’ll be difficult. Is there an easier way?”
I don’t understand either. Is this really the extent of the mindset of an Ive developer?
It is a large IT service company. It is not a traditional conservative large company.
But the staff were much more passive than I expected.
‘Oh no. I’m in big trouble. I shouldn’t have said I didn’t know already.’
I’ve only explained the basic concepts. I haven’t even gotten into the really complicated stuff yet.
Rather than saying he lacks the skills, he seems to have no will to accept new things.
That made me even more frustrated, so I made another suggestion to explain it as simply as possible.
“Then shall we do it like this? I will check the code and explain it together. Do you have any applications currently under development?”
I tried to explain each one with the intention of solving the problem book together.
The manager nodded to my suggestion and fiddled with the computer in the conference room.
“Here it is. We are currently working on an app, but we keep having issues with its performance. I think it may have been combined incorrectly, but I don’t know why.”
Could you please take a look? As soon as I heard that, I quickly glanced at the code.
‘What is this?’
I didn’t understand it at all.
I wasn’t sure if there was something wrong with the in-memory data grid product.
Since the code was such a mess, it wasn’t surprising that it didn’t perform as well as I expected.
I honestly couldn’t even guess whether it was due to external influence or a simple development issue.
however.
The staff looked at me like a baby bird looking at its mother bird.
He blinked his eyes and waited for me to answer.
‘Why is it so hot? Is the air conditioner broken?’
I was so suffocated that I unzipped my windbreaker all the way down.
Then I pretended to look at the code in more detail.
“The code is… a bit difficult.”
I opened my mouth carefully
“It’s so confusing because there are so many products that can be combined. We’re confident that we can do it well if we do it the old way···”
Looking at the manager’s face as he made excuses.
‘I can’t do this project.’
I felt strongly convinced.
New technologies are difficult in this state.
no.
At least we can’t take them with us.
**
Developers preferred large IT service companies over large corporations.
This is because companies that develop B2C on their own can try out more diverse technologies.
Even when changing jobs, experience at large IT service companies was given more priority than experience at large corporations.
Among them, Ive is one of the largest IT service companies in Korea.
So, we had to have the best talent pool in the country.
This is where it absolutely has to be.
I sat on a chair in the break room, staring into space with an empty paper cup in my mouth.
Then, with his eyes fixed on empty space, he suddenly asked Manager Chae a question.
“How many apps did you say you wanted to switch?”
The faint scent of mixed coffee wafted to the tip of my nose. I raised my head and turned my eyes to look at Manager Chae. Manager Chae held up three fingers without saying anything.
“Three? That’s still fortunate. It’s not as good as I thought···”
“No. 30.”
widely.
At Manager Chae’s answer, the paper cup he was holding in his mouth fell.
At the same time, my head automatically turned towards Manager Chae.
I opened my eyes wide in disbelief and asked again.
“30? We have to convert them by early next year?”
Existing applications had to have their code modified to conform to platform specifications.
No. This is called a revision, but in reality it is no different from developing something new.
This means that 30 apps must be developed by early next year.
“That’s correct.”
“It’s ruined.”
“You told me to only trust myself. Where did the confident Director Jeong go?”
“That person just passed away. He even had a funeral. I guess Manager Chae didn’t receive the condolence message.”
I shrugged and laughed. Who knew? The organization would be torn apart to this extent.
I thought the project was going poorly because of communication problems between each team.
I thought it would be easy if I just did a good job of interpreting.
I never thought that the developers would simply lack willpower.
“Manager Chae didn’t have to go through all that trouble for nothing.”
“Why would I have learned springs separately···”
“What should I do now? I can’t possibly do this project with those developers.”
“··· Is the code that messed up?”
“Yes. It was really amazing. The development was so novel. It was so out of the ordinary that I couldn’t even guess what they were thinking when they made it.”
When an error occurs, I usually look up the product manual and fix that part.
‘These gentlemen chose a detour rather than a correction.’
They had a bypass in an extraordinary way. If it didn’t work, they would bypass it. Then, if a problem occurred, they would bypass it again. They didn’t even think about looking at the manual, and they kept repeating the bypass process in the way they had been doing.
So the code was all tattered and patched up like rags.
Even I, a code cracking expert, was in such a dizzying state that I couldn’t tell at a glance what I had created.
I had to completely rip out the app that was already developed. This project was originally being carried out to improve performance, but if I coded it like that, it would never be able to achieve the desired performance.
I kept thinking about what to do and how to do it.
at last.
I looked at Manager Chae with a resentful expression.
“No. This is the world’s best Ive. The best IT service company in the country. But what the hell happened?”
I tried not to say anything bad about Ive in the company break room.
Finally, I couldn’t hold it in any longer and burst out.
At my outraged cries, Manager Chae silently raised his hand and pointed to the ceiling.
My gaze then turned upwards.
“Are you a representative?”
“yes.”
“Why this representative?”
“Why do talented engineers move to large IT service companies instead of existing large corporations?”
Manager Chae answers my questions with questions.
“Because of the relatively horizontal organizational culture, there are more diverse things we can try technically.”
“That’s right. But our CEO is a person with strong convictions.”
Manager Chae scratched his head and expressed it in a roundabout way.
It’s packaged nicely though.
at last.
“It means you don’t listen to what other people say.”
At my voice, Manager Chae turned his head and took a look. Even though we were the only ones in the break room, he looked around just in case.
“Besides, the company is extremely conservative. I’ve felt this while working there, but it’s not much different from existing large corporations. In fact, in some ways, it’s more authoritarian.”
He muttered close to my ear, as if whispering.
“Really? It doesn’t seem like that from the outside···”
“You may not know this, but there is a first rule when interviewing a CEO.”
“What is it?”
“Never try to teach the representative.”
“···”
The CEO openly tells you not to teach? And that’s in an IT field that he himself is not familiar with?
To be honest, I couldn’t believe it, so I tried to answer Manager Chae and tell him not to lie.
At that moment.
-Jiying.
My phone vibrated. It was the call I was waiting for.
“Oh, I got a call. I’ll go up and come back first.”
As soon as he answered, he bent down, picked up the paper cup, and then stood up.
“Can you convince the CEO?”
“well.”
“If I can’t convince you… I guess I’ll have to give up on the project?”
“no.”
I shook my head and laughed.
I left the manager’s question of whether there was any way and went outside.
No matter what the challenge, there is always a solution.
but.
It’s just a problem because it’s so damn hard.
**
like that.
As soon as I entered the CEO’s office, I threw a fastball.
I’m the type of person who usually just throws caution to the wind and slowly avoids it.
This time, a head-on confrontation was necessary, so I had no choice but to throw a full body strike.
“Mr. Lee? Don’t you have any plans to change the company’s management policy?”
“Yes? What specifically?”
“I think we need to let our employees loose in a more free atmosphere.”
“Why?”
“If you keep pressuring people with authority like you do now, the employees who want to try new things will all leave.”
That’s the way things are on this floor. I answered as best I could to make sure I didn’t feel bad.
The representative became slightly lost in thought at my words. His eyes turned upward.
After being quiet for a long time like that.
“no.”
He shook his head with a determined expression.
“why?”
“Because I’ve had success this way so far.”
A bittersweet smile appears on his face.
This time I remained silent after hearing the representative’s words.
“No dating, schedule management, diet management, etc. We managed much more tightly than other agencies. That’s why we never had a single drug incident, which is common in this industry. I think it was possible because we managed our trainees to the point where people called us a prison… That’s what I think.”
“This is my formula for success. Is this it?”
“Yes. How can I continue with a business that I am not sure about? I am a person who believes that this method is right. I think it will be difficult.”
He had his own firm beliefs.
Regardless of whether that belief is right or wrong.
Anyway, I didn’t see any way to persuade him.
“If we push developers harder to get results···”
“It’s impossible. To put it bluntly, the developers over there. They’re all highly educated and experienced. Of course, they’ll be good at all the technologies they’ve been using. The problem is that they’re trying a project that has almost no precedents. But they all have no will to learn. To be exact, only those people are left.”
I spoke a little loudly. The representative tilted his head at my words.
“But we··· also successfully completed a more difficult AI project?”
“It’s not something new. It’s just that the employees who were originally working on AI worked on a project similar to what they had done before. But this project requires the developers to completely change their existing form… Honestly, this is difficult in the short term.”
This was my conclusion.
“Haa… This is the first time I’ve seen Youngjun look so determined.”
“I’m sorry, but I’m just saying this because I really don’t have an answer.”
“Then I guess I’ll have to stop this project too… Oh my… I put a lot of effort into this project… To be honest, it’s a bit disappointing.”
“No. You said you invested hundreds of billions. You have to finish what you start.”
“You just said it was impossible?”
“Ah… That’s not what I meant. I meant to tell you to be careful when working on a completely new project in the future. There is a way to solve this.”
“How?”
“Well, I guess I just have to develop everything with my own hands. What else can I do?”
I pointed at myself with my thumb.
Without realizing it, an arrogant expression appeared at the corner of my mouth.
“Wait a minute… Are you really going to redevelop all of those apps by yourself? That many?”
“That’s the only way to meet the schedule.”
“Wait a minute. Wait a minute. So… is that possible? Doing what hundreds of developers are struggling with right now? Doing it alone?”
“You’ll know once you try it. But if the project is successful, please do a good job of promoting the donation app. You’re saving hundreds of billions because of me. If you had just left this project alone, it would have failed.”
I put all the effort into it. I’m making 30 apps all by myself. Honestly, I thought it was okay to put this much effort into it.
“No… I know that Youngjun is great, but it doesn’t make sense. If it’s something that can be done alone, then what can’t be done by all those developers…”
“I can do it.”
This is just for me. I nodded with a smile.
I was about to cross my arms a little more arrogantly, but then I remembered that the CEO was an authoritarian person, so I slowly brought my hands together in front of me.
He smiled at the representative with such a polite yet arrogant attitude.
Looking at the representative who keeps expressing admiration.
To this extent.
Wouldn’t it be okay to cross your legs a little?
That thought occurred to me for a moment.
