Time Mansour - Chapter 6
Only Noblemtl
Episode 6 High School Graduate Developer
A rusty cross on top of a building.
A red, thin layer of rust covered the cross.
I found myself standing still as I watched the moving company employees carrying my luggage.
Although it had slowed down a bit, the IT industry was still booming.
That’s why.
The economy is in a recession. It’s a recession. I didn’t really feel it when I just heard it.
“But the churches are all falling apart.”
When I first moved here, I couldn’t sleep every weekend because of the noise from the church members.
But in recent months, even on Sundays, the surroundings have been quiet.
“I’m sorry. I’ll pass.”
A moving company employee passes by and lightly taps me as I stand there blankly.
Only after I hit it did I come to my senses and stand to the side to get out of the way.
People who are busy working from morning.
In these times of recession, we should be thankful that we can even go to work.
People’s hearts are so treacherous.
I never once thought of that.
**
The office was still quiet.
Since I have nothing else to do today, I’m teaching the new recruits with Manager Chae.
Each country branch of a foreign vendor company was similar to a sales organization.
The lack of technical support was handled by delegating it to domestic partner companies.
However, the engineers at our partner company, Daeyoung Systems, were of poor quality and insufficient in number.
Among the partner engineers in the platform product lineup.
Because the only person I really looked up to was Manager Chae.
The risk is so great that if CEO Chae collapses, the entire business will be shaken.
So, to avoid that kind of situation, I was providing training to new employees whenever I had time.
The kids really didn’t seem to like us.
“Seohyun, it’s purely a matter of skill. But she has passion. I really don’t know what to do with her.”
Assistant Manager Chae Shin-ah sighs as she looks at employee Choi Dong-hoon.
A young male employee lifts his hands from the keyboard and checks his pineapple watch as it vibrates on his wrist.
I quickly opened the coin exchange app and fiddled with my phone for a while.
“Why does Donghoon leave the company?”
“Are you bored? Or are you just a bit unemployed?”
The agent chuckled and laughed at my words.
I also laugh along with the agent’s appearance.
Manager Chae and I both look at employee Choi Dong-hoon with smiles on our faces.
His business card might say he’s a cloud engineer at British Systems.
We called that guy a professional coin trader.
Because there were employees who spent more time accessing the coin exchange than in the cloud environment.
“On the one hand, isn’t it amazing? It’s not even your own company. You’re doing that at a client company. And you’re a newbie at that.”
“Is that great? Director Jeong is from a different company, so that’s why he’s saying such things. As a shooter, it’s a pain in the neck, isn’t it?”
Manager Chae shook his head from side to side, but did not frown.
I was not entirely dissatisfied with the attitude of employee Choi Dong-hoon, who prioritized coin investment over work.
It’s the same for both Manager Chae and me.
I didn’t really dislike employee Choi Dong-hoon that much.
After seeing so many worse villains, I started to think that one was cute.
The place where most of the high-income earners hang out is Chosun Bank.
And a SI developer with 15 years of experience at the manager level who can’t even do basic coding.
Compared to that, a rookie who works leisurely?
It’s just cute and adorable.
Don’t expect too much.
They’re just kids. We should be thankful that they even come to work.
With that in mind, I was talking with Manager Chae about the new recruits.
however.
suddenly.
“Manager Cho. Why is this our fault?!”
There was a commotion in front of the office door.
I turned my head without realizing it at the loud noise.
“We can’t do it if you don’t hire people! How many times do I have to tell you!”
It’s true.
The truth has emerged.
Not a fake like employee Choi Dong-hoon.
The real villain was standing in front of the office door, swinging his sword and shouting.
With a face as red as a rusty cross.
**
Manager Cho responds curtly with an annoyed expression.
“Then what do you want us to do?”
“Then what should we do!”
A man who barges into an office and demands what you do.
Development team leader, Ko Chang-seok.
I am the development team leader.
While Vice-Chief Ko and Manager Cho were arguing loudly in front of the door.
I sneaked in.
“Why? What’s going on?”
Because I was responsible for all the development-related issues raised by the development team anyway.
There was ample reason to join the conversation.
“Director Jeong. You’re here at the right time. Since you’ve done some development, I guess we can talk to you. Think about it. How can we touch software made with Delphi? Manager Cho keeps making excuses…”
“Then the development problem should be solved on their side. Even the developers don’t know. What can we, as engineers, do?”
Before I could answer, Manager Cho intervened and raised his voice.
“No. It’s not that we want the platform operations team to do anything. We need time until we can find a Delphi freelancer. That’s it. What should we do about this right now?”
Then, Vice Minister Ko Chang-seok shouted even louder.
“Why are you blaming us for the fact that they are telling us to hurry up and handle it? The development team should take care of development issues on their own.”
Manager Cho doesn’t stay still either.
The atmosphere gradually became more and more intense.
I thought the atmosphere would get more tense if I just left it like that.
Again I joined the conversation.
“Delphi? Do you have the code? Can I take a look at it?”
“Director Jeong? That’s fine. What would you know even if you saw it? There aren’t many people my age who can do it. Director Jeong. You must have only seen Delphi in textbooks.”
A tone of speech that is subtly dismissive.
It’s just that the tone is aggressive. What Deputy Director Ko said itself was not wrong.
Delphi wasn’t the programming language of my generation to begin with.
Even though Deputy Manager Ko Chang-seok, who is about ten years older than me, doesn’t know, when I came to this field as a developer, it was already an old-fashioned language that was hardly used.
“Still. You can tell just by looking at it. Just give it to me. There doesn’t seem to be any way.”
I smiled brightly and held out my hand.
Deputy Manager Ko reluctantly heads to the computer.
“I told you, even if you look at this, you still don’t understand. It’s different from Java. The concept.”
He kept grumbling while displaying an error code on the monitor screen.
I guess I can’t do anything about it.
JoongAng Bank is a company that is stingy with its labor costs.
Since they still haven’t received payment for their freelance work, they’re taking it out on us for no reason.
“This is it. Can you tell just by looking at it like this?”
Deputy Director Ko gestures with his chin at the monitor screen that is jam-packed with code.
I tilted my head slightly and looked at the screen.
Software written in Delphi in 2023.
maybe.
It won’t be a complicated code.
If it was a difficult and important product, it would have been criticized on the front lines and would have already been switched to Java.
As I was scrolling down with that thought in mind, something immediately caught my eye and I paused on the screen for a moment.
As expected, it was a simple error, just as I thought.
“Ah. Fortunately, it’s not a big problem. It’s a simple error. This is… I’ll fix the source code and send it to you by email. Just a moment, sir. I’ll use the computer.”
Then, I naturally took the mouse away from Vice President Ko and sat down on the chair.
Deputy Director Ko was pushed away without saying a word even though I pushed him away.
But he was still looking at me with an expression full of distrust.
So let me fix the code in a jiffy and make sure it works properly.
Only then did Vice President Ko’s expression change.
Deputy Manager Ko mutters to himself, looking back and forth between the monitor and my face.
“··· How··· to see Delphi at once···”
“What? It’s a programming language. That’s what it is.”
I waved my hand as if it was nothing serious, as if I was exaggerating further, at Vice President Ko, who was looking at me with wide eyes.
“No. Mr. Jeong? Have you really never used Delphi? Otherwise, how can you know a language that you don’t know…”
“That’s possible. As you said, Vice President, I’m only thirty-five. I’ve only seen Delphi in textbooks.”
“That···that···”
He is embarrassed by my words and mumbles his words.
His face turned red as he stuttered.
I guess it’s because I’m embarrassed.
Or maybe because I’m angry.
I’m not sure exactly.
anyway.
Taking advantage of the moment when Vice Minister Ko was flustered, Manager Cho began to taunt.
“What is this? Even an engineer like Director Jeong, who doesn’t know much about development, can fix it in an instant after just one look. The developers can’t even touch it. Oh my. And they’re whining about providing more manpower. This is a real mess.”
“A mess? Manager Cho! How can you say that to your senior? I’m Manager Cho’s senior!”
“Seniors and juniors? Here. At school? Somehow. It’s not like a company. It’s like working in a club.”
Tsk tsk. Even the tongue-clicking sound at the end was perfect.
I don’t support a single word.
Manager Cho is our team’s fighting cock.
It’s nice to have someone like this on your team.
Because I can just laugh out loud.
“Hey. You, Manager Cho!”
“Why? What? Club senior!”
Development team leader Ko Chang-seok shouts in protest against Manager Cho’s rebellion.
Seeing Vice President Ko raise his hand above his head, I had no choice but to step in.
“Are you okay? Didn’t you say it was urgent? Do you not need to report it to the director?”
“Ahem. I should report… Well… Thank you. Director Jeong.
At my words, Vice Minister Ko calms down. No, he pretends to calm down.
But is it too humiliating to go along like that?
“These days, young people are really shameless.”
I walk out the office door, mumbling to myself so that everyone can hear me until the end.
After Vice President Ko disappeared.
Manager Cho glances at him.
Only after I lifted my brow and confirmed that the conductor had definitely disappeared.
He looked at me with narrowed eyes.
“Director Jeong. Be honest. Have you tried Delphi? You lied about seeing it in a textbook.”
“Of course. I’m not some programming language genius. How could I know that just by looking at it?”
So I shrugged my shoulders.
Manager Cho and Manager Chae look at me with curious expressions.
“Sir, how old are you? You’re not lying about your age, are you?”
“I may look like a student, but I’m actually thirty-five years old.”
Even if I make a light joke, the question marks floating over my team members’ heads still don’t go away.
I thought I could do a little bit of everything.
It was amazing to do all that.
If you look at them one by one, there isn’t anything special about them.
But Delphi is a little different.
This is the language of the era of gray-haired elders.
Finally, unable to contain his curiosity, the agent asked me cautiously.
“How did you learn that? Delphi is… a hobby?”
“No. I used it a lot at my first company. Because of ActiveX.”
“Huh? Even back then, wasn’t Delphi on the verge of collapse?”
“That’s why. I did it. Because no one else wanted to do it.”
As I scratched my head like that, everyone nodded with a belated expression of understanding.
At that time, the language called Delphi had no future.
Because of this, all developers were reluctant to do it.
so.
An opportunity came to me who had nothing.
