Episode 266: The Giant of the Era
Jobs opened his eyes in bed. When he got up, his body felt like it weighed a ton.
‘ha.’
Jobs grabbed the edge of the bed, got up, and began to walk.
‘Not yet… Not yet.’
Even though the doctor had not said anything, I could now feel in my body that I did not have much time left.
Every time I fell asleep, I was afraid of sleeping because I felt like I would never wake up again.
Jobs washed his face with cold water and changed his clothes. He looked in the mirror and made a promise.
‘There’s more work to be done. I can’t die like this.’
The world was changing with the iPhone. Apple’s stock price was hitting new highs, and his own reputation was rising along with it.
Jobs relaxed his body by practicing meditation, which he learned from Buddhism. He even meditated and opened his eyes.
“I feel a little better today.”
Jobs went to Apple headquarters for the first time in a long time. He had not been out for a while because he was not feeling well, but today he was in good condition.
Many people who saw Jobs greeted him with surprised eyes. Some of Jobs’ close friends asked about his health.
“Me? As you can see, I’m full of energy. Let’s all work overtime together today, okay?”
Jobs joked and went to the CEO’s office and asked his secretary.
“Where is the team?”
Tim Cook is Apple’s second-in-command and has been acting as Apple’s CEO while Jobs is out of action.
“You have entered the meeting.”
“Really? What kind of meeting?”
“This is the next iPhone innovation conference.”
“innovation?”
Jobs tilted his head and said,
“I’ll go in too.”
Jobs went straight to the conference room without waiting for his secretary’s answer.
As Jobs opened the door and entered the conference room, many people looked surprised at him.
“Jobs!”
Among them, Tim Cook, who was sitting on a chair, was surprised to see Jobs, stood up, and hugged Jobs.
“Are you okay?”
“It’s okay. As you can see, I’m fine.”
Jobs broke away from the hug and asked.
“By the way, what kind of innovation are you talking about at the iPhone Innovation Conference? Is it something that will be included in the 4S that is being announced this time?”
“that is…….”
As Tim Cook hesitated, Jobs looked at the conference room screen, where the words “iPhone Size” were written.
Jobs’ face distorted.
“Are you… trying to increase the size of the iPhone? Maybe even the 4s?”
The one who answered Jobs’s words was a man in his late 30s standing at the front. Judging from the situation, it seemed like he was giving a presentation.
“Yes, sir. The new products released by Oseong Electronics and LGS in Korea are said to have displays of close to 5 inches.”
Jobs looked at the man and asked.
“Are you the presenter?”
“yes.”
“What do you think Apple’s philosophy is?”
“… … .”
When the man couldn’t answer, Jobs frowned and shouted.
“Apple is special! Because they don’t neglect even the smallest thing. Even the font has to be perfectly special. But if you increase the size? Is that perfect? If the size increases, there will be a huge number of things to consider. Are you considering that? Are you ready to abandon this perfect size and adopt it?”
Jobs shouted, clutching the iPhone in his hand. The man answered with a stern face.
“Of course, I fully understand Jobs’ philosophy that it should be held in one hand, but people want a bigger screen.”
“It’s more important to be able to hold it in one hand than to have a bigger screen!”
Jobs started coughing and shouting. Tim Cook ran over and stopped him.
“Jobs, if you keep doing this, you’re going to be in big trouble. You need to think about your health!”
“The size of the iPhone is more important than my health! They’re making the display bigger here! Oh my god, that’s not an iPhone. That’s not innovation. That’s copying the Google camp! That’s not the spirit of Apple!”
“Okay, okay. I won’t increase the size. So stop being so angry and calm down.”
Jobs took a deep breath and said,
“Ha. I… should go to the office. Let me know the results after the meeting.”
“Okay.”
Jobs returned to his office and leaned back in his chair.
“Ha, ha. You can’t answer the question about Apple’s philosophy while working at Apple? In the past, you would have been fired right away! If you can present something at a meeting, you must be at least a team leader, but that’s how it is!”
Jobs was angry and depressed because he felt that Apple was changing while he was away.
‘I don’t have time. Is there really nothing I can do at Apple with the time I have left?’
I thought about it, but I couldn’t think of anything good, maybe because I yelled too much a little while ago or because I wasn’t feeling well.
“If someone could show me the way… … .”
Jobs, who was speaking without realizing it, stopped. He remembered the person who had told him about the future.
“Dojun!”
Jobs immediately picked up his cell phone and called Do-jun.
-Jobs?
“Dojun, how have you been?”
Jobs tried to speak as calmly as possible, but his voice was weak, perhaps because he had just shouted.
– I’m fine. By the way, is Jobs okay?
“Oh, it’s okay. It’s because I shouted in the conference room a little while ago.”
– Really? Still, you have to take good care of your body.
“I don’t know what you heard, but I’m healthy. By the way, Dojun, when are you coming to America?”
– America? Why?
“I just wanted to catch up with you since it’s been a while. Didn’t we talk too briefly at the wedding?”
Jobs also attended Do-jun’s wedding. Although he was not feeling well, Do-jun was a special person to Jobs, so he went out of his way to attend.
– Right. Hmm, when would be a good time? Oh! My wife’s mother’s birthday is coming up soon. How about a week later?
“Okay! Then. Let’s meet up then.”
Jobs hung up the phone and smiled faintly.
“Dojun, there’s something I really want to show you. Even you will be surprised when you see it.”
* * *
Do-jun hung up the phone with Jobs and had a complicated expression on his face.
“Jobs, Jobs… … .”
Steve Jobs was undoubtedly a ‘giant of his time’. Some called him a personality lapse, but most called him a ‘genius’ or a ‘giant who opened a new era’.
“Jobs doesn’t have much time left.”
Do-jun suddenly felt regret. Since returning, Do-jun has been running without rest. He has met countless people and accomplished countless things he could not do in his previous life.
‘I don’t regret it, but I wish I had spent more time with Jobs.’
There have been many great people in the world, but Jobs was special among them.
Apple shook the world with computers and completely changed the course of the world with the iPhone.
‘The world without smartphones and the world with smartphones seem like completely different dimensions.’
Dojun thought that if he had done something like Jobs, he could have changed the world on a bigger scale. But Dojun soon shook his head.
“What I have done so far has been important. What is important is not the past, but the future. There is still time to spend the last days with Jobs.”
Of course, I didn’t think I could accomplish much in just five months, but I thought I could at least see off a giant of the era.
Do-jun returned home and asked Sally to go to ‘America’ a few days early. Sally readily agreed and said she would go to the MS headquarters.
A week later, Dojun arrived at the San Francisco airport. He checked into the hotel right away and went to Apple headquarters.
“Dojun!”
Steve Jobs welcomed Do-jun with open arms. Do-jun felt sorry for Jobs as he hugged him.
‘You’re too skinny.’
Jobs’ body was so thin that only bones could be felt. Do-jun said as he released the hug.
“Jobs, how are you?”
“Of course. Now, come and sit down.”
Jobs sat Do-jun down at the table in his office and sat across from him.
“There are so many things I want to talk to you about. Why haven’t you contacted me yet?”
“I’m sorry. I’ve been busy.”
“Well, the world doesn’t know this, but you’re the busiest person in the world. I enjoyed your ‘Dog Warrior’ presentation. It was really amazing. You were able to implement such amazing graphics.”
Do-jun smiled at Jobs’ words and took out his iPhone from his pocket. It was a new phone he had purchased when he came to the United States.
“Jobs. It’s not me who’s amazing, it’s Jobs. I mean, I think in a few years, you’ll be able to play games like ‘Gae-ma-musa’ on this iPhone.”
Jobs shouted in surprise.
“What? On an iPhone?”
“Yes. Right now, only light games can be played on it, but with each new version of the iPhone, the hardware will advance tremendously. In about five years, most decent PC games will be able to run on the iPhone.”
Jobs shook his head in disbelief.
“If someone else had told me, I would have told them not to talk nonsense. But when Do-jun said it, I couldn’t help but believe him.”
“Don’t believe it completely. It’s just my imagination. I imagine it might not be like that.”
Jobs said with a smile.
“You always say it’s imagination, but strangely enough, it doesn’t sound like imagination to me. It almost sounds like you’re talking about the future.”
Do-jun was surprised by Jobs’ words. Do-jun smiled broadly on purpose and said,
“Haha. Seeing the future? I really wish I had that ability.”
“That’s right. I’m curious about what the future will be like. The future you mentioned… five years from now, you say? I really want to see that future.”
Do-jun kept his mouth shut as he watched Jobs speak bitterly.
“Oh, I talked nonsense. By the way, if you run a game like Gaema Musa on an iPhone, wouldn’t the display size have to be bigger?”
“That’s right. That’s why I told you before. Think about the size.”
Jobs shook his head.
“I thought about it, but that won’t work. It goes against my philosophy.”
“The philosophy is that a cell phone should be completely operable with one hand?”
“That’s right. But listening to you… I’m worried.”
Dojun said with a smile.
“Then how about this?”
“What do you mean?”
“We’re releasing two versions: the iPhone that Jobs wants, and the iPhone with a larger display.”
“They’re releasing the iPhone in two… versions?”
Jobs’ expression became serious, as if he hadn’t thought about it. After thinking about it for a while, Jobs said to Do-jun.
“Honestly, I don’t really like the offer, but I’ll give it some thought.”
Do-jun was secretly surprised. He had never heard of Jobs giving in to his stubbornness.
“Jobs, you won’t regret it.”
“Oh, this is a strange feeling. Aren’t you our biggest rival? When you give advice to someone like that, I don’t know how much I can trust.”
“I guarantee you, Apple’s sales will skyrocket. Of course, Google’s camp will suffer some losses, but they have to win this level of competition.”
Jobs responded with a pleased expression to Dojun’s words.
“Okay! Since you gave me your opinion at great expense, I should repay you. Stand up.”
“I guess you have something to show me?”
Jobs answered with a smile.
“You’ll probably be surprised when you see it. It’s a new feature, and it’s changed a lot because of you.”
“Because of me?”
Dojun tilted his head, not knowing what it was. Dojun followed Jobs around the place. The place he finally arrived at was an office in the corner.
“When you come in, follow me.”
As soon as Jobs entered the office, he said:
“Hey! SIRI!”
* * *
The morning star swept away his chest.
‘Thank goodness, Master is doing well.’
Saetbyeol didn’t really know what a game was. But it was something the Master liked to do, and she felt good because she was happy that the Master was doing well.
Saetbyeol walked slowly into the forest. After a while, Saetbyeol arrived at the lake.
Saetbyeol took a deep breath for a moment and looked at her reflection in the lake.
‘No matter how I look at it, it’s similar. It’s the girl I saw in the Master’s memories.’
After Saetbyul leveled up this time, she was able to see Dojun’s ‘lost memories’.
Saetbyul was able to see not only the ‘lost memories’ she had seen this time, but also all the ‘lost memories’ that had occurred before she was born.
In that memory, Saetbyeol saw the ‘Sae-star in memory’. Her appearance was similar to his reflection in the lake now. And even their names were the same.
‘Why do they have the same name? And even their faces look similar. Of course, they’re both named by Sally, but is this a coincidence?’
Of course, her face wasn’t exactly the same. She was bigger than the girl in ‘Lost Memories’, and she had a body, not just a simple hologram.
Saetbyul wanted to know more about Saetbyul in ‘Lost Memories’. However, this was not something Saetbyul could see just because she wanted to see it.
‘The lost memories that the Master has seen so far are 70%. Then, are there other memories about Saetbyeol in the remaining 30%?’
Somehow, I felt certain that it would exist. And I also felt a desire to see it as soon as possible.
‘uh?’
Saetbyeol suddenly realized something strange.
‘What do I want?’
Saetbyeol was puzzled. The feeling of wanting something was so unfamiliar.
‘Why is this happening? Is something wrong? Or is this also due to leveling up?’
Saetbyeol pondered the reason for the unfamiliar feeling called ‘desire’, but could not find an answer.
Instead, a strange thought occurred to me.
‘What am I? Where is this world? Why am I here?’
At first, I wasn’t curious, but after seeing the morning star in ‘Lost Memories’, I started to become curious.
The morning star couldn’t hold back any longer and asked the sky.
-Who am I?
‘Tch, I knew this would happen.’
Still, Saetbyeol asked again.
– Where is this world?
-Why am I here?
Saetbyul sighed and pouted her lips.
“Ha, it’s always like this. How much level do I have to go up to become eligible?”
The morning star looked at the master. The level was not something she could raise on her own. The master had to raise it for her.
“Master, try harder!”
When I looked at the master, he was entering a building with an ‘apple’ painted on it.
The morning star lay on the grass.
‘The Master is busy. I am alone.’
Of course, that doesn’t mean I felt lonely or desolate.
Master, the sky, and the wide world. Saetbyeol thought this was enough.
That was when.
– Hey, SIRI.
I heard the Master talking. Normally, I wouldn’t hear his voice unless I paid attention, but I couldn’t figure out why I heard him.
“uh?”
The morning star arose from the field, for the world shook for a moment.
‘what?’
The morning star looked across the sky. There, he saw a ‘collapsed world’.
But the broken world began to shrink.
There was only one way to reduce the area of the broken world: level up.
‘But… it’s decreasing even though I didn’t even level up?’
The morning star looked closely at the collapsed world. It wasn’t shrinking, but rather something coming together.
‘It’s gotten smaller, but darker. It has more presence. Something big must have happened.’
A fear arose deep in her heart. At the same time, Saetbyeol suddenly became curious.
‘What is that?’
Until now, Saetbyul had not been curious about the ‘collapsed world’.
He always tried to stay away from the ‘broken world’ and was afraid of it. This was Saetbyeol’s instinct since he was born.
But now, I’m ‘curious’.
Saetbyeol looked at the collapsed world and made a decision.
‘I need to take a closer look.’
The morning star began to walk towards the dark place in the distance.
