Episode 270: The Black Pillar
It was the first time for Saetbyeol that the Master had asked for something so earnestly.
‘You look pitiful.’
I couldn’t feel all of the Master’s emotions, but I could feel that the Master really wanted it.
The morning star rose on the lakeside.
‘I already asked, but just in case.’
The morning star looked up at the sky and asked again.
‘It’s not time yet, can the Master help me?’
To the morning star’s words an answer was heard from the sky.
“Ah, as expected, it’s impossible.”
Saetbyeol looked at the Master again. Seeing him standing blankly in front of the intensive care unit made her unable to stay still.
‘Sorry, Master. It’s not possible from above. I wish I could do something about it.’
It was then. Saetbyeol remembered the time he had been to the ‘Black Pillar’ a while ago.
‘That’s right. The black pillar said that, even if the period is not long, there is a way to help the Master.’
At the time, I thought it was ridiculous, but not anymore. When I saw the Master, I wanted to help him in some way.
‘But if I ask, will you really answer? What if I ask for something too unreasonable?’
The morning star shook his head.
‘Eight, if it seems dangerous, then don’t do it!’
I wanted to help the Master, but this wasn’t my job. It was a side job. I had no obligation to do this.
The morning star started walking towards the ‘black pillar’.
After walking for a while, I arrived in front of the ‘black pillar’. When I was just a step away from the black pillar, the ‘black pillar’ spoke.
[I guess you’ve made up your mind.]
Saetbyeol asked with a stern face.
“Did you know I was coming?”
[I thought it would come with a high probability.]
“Probability? Are you like a computer?”
[Well, I don’t really know who I am. Don’t you?]
“that’s right.”
[Aren’t you curious? About yourself.]
I was honestly curious. But that wasn’t what mattered right now.
“Stop talking nonsense. Answer me. Can you really help the Master when it’s not time?”
[Yes, it’s true. If you just put your hand in, you’ll know how.]
“Is there any chance that Master Nana will be harmed?”
The black pillar answered the cautious morning star.
[I’ll ask for a price. Nothing in this world is free. It’s all up to you. I won’t force you.]
Saetbyeol hesitated when he heard that there was a price.
‘Do I really have to do this? What if they ask for something huge in return?’
Saetbyeol hesitated. Saetbyeol looked at the ‘Master’ once again.
He was calling someone with trembling hands. There was a brief pause and then a woman’s voice came over the speaker.
‘Huh? That’s Sally?’
Dojun explained the situation to Sally in a trembling voice.
I could hear Sally’s trembling through the receiver. I could hear her heavy breathing and sobbing.
‘ah!’
It was strange. My heart ached so much. It wasn’t like this when Do-jun was desperately speaking, but when I heard Sally’s tearful voice, I wanted to run over to her right away and hug her.
But he couldn’t talk to Sally or see her. He couldn’t be of any help.
‘No. This time, I can help Sally!’
There was no more hesitation. Saetbyeol said, putting her hand on the black pillar.
“Keep your promise!”
– Sssshhhhh.
It was a strange feeling. I’d never experienced it before, but it felt like I was stuck in a ‘swamp’.
Something soft, yet somewhat uncomfortable, wrapped around Saetbyul’s arm. Saetbyul didn’t even feel her arm being sucked inward by the strange feeling.
At first, I only put my hand into the ‘black pillar’, but before I knew it, I was up to my ‘elbow’.
“What? It won’t stop!”
[It wasn’t me who put my arm in, it was you.]
The startled Morning Star braced her legs. Then her arms were no longer sucked into the black pillar.
“Ha. That’s enough! Tell me! How can I get help even when the time is not right?”
The ‘black pillar’ spoke to the morning star.
[Yeah… That’s what happened.]
“What are you talking about? Is that so?”
[Nothing. I just received one of the rewards.]
“The price? What on earth are you talking about?”
[Hmm. I’ll tell you about that later. Aren’t there more important things right now?]
The morning star came to his senses.
“Right. What is it? How can I get advice?”
[If you haven’t received ‘advice’ for ‘3 years’, you can get ‘help’ now.]
The morning star’s eyes grew wide.
“What? For three years?”
[Yeah. That’s how you get advice.]
This was something she had never thought of. Saetbyeol thought for a moment and then pulled her arm away from the ‘black pillar’.
Contrary to my expectation that there would be something serious buried inside, the arm was the same as before it was placed in the pillar. It was just as the ‘black pillar’ had said.
[Any further questions?]
Saetbyeol answered, shaking her arms.
“Aren’t you going to ask for something more?”
[yes.]
“Okay then. But what on earth did you get in return?”
[I’ll teach you that next time. I don’t know exactly yet.]
“okay.”
The morning star stepped back. She didn’t want to be here any longer.
The morning star moved away from the black pillar for a while, then looked up at the sky and asked.
“If I don’t receive help for 3 years, can I still receive help even if the period has not expired?”
The answer rang in my head.
‘Ah! That’s possible. What the black pillar said was true.’
The morning star spoke directly to the Master.
“Master, there is a way.”
– What? There’s a way? What is that!
“There is a way. However, if you use this, you won’t be able to receive my help for three years. Is that okay?”
Dojun answered right away.
– It’s okay. It doesn’t matter if you can’t do it for longer than 3 years!
“Okay. Then… I’ll proceed assuming that the Master has approved. What does the Master want?”
– Low-grade! Low-grade panacea. I need a way to get it. And before Dorothy dies!
The morning star closed his eyes and asked the sky.
“Tell me how to get the lesser panacea, before Dorothy dies!”
At Saetbyeol’s words, a light came down from the sky and enveloped Saetbyeol. After a while, Saetbyeol opened her eyes and spoke to Dojun.
* * *
Dojun was surprised to hear Saetbyeol’s answer.
“What? There is a way? What is that!”
Dojun had an extremely excited expression. There was no more hope, but a rope had fallen from the sky.
“It’s okay! It doesn’t matter if you can’t do it for longer than three years!”
Dojun shouted right away. There were people around him, but he didn’t notice them.
“Inferior! Inferior panacea. I need a way to get it. And before Dorothy dies!”
Saetbyeol didn’t respond to Dojun’s words for a moment. Dojun waited with his chest tightening.
“What is that?”
Dojun’s eyes widened.
“What… you said? Remove the CHAT-GPT part from SIRI’s source?”
Dojun’s throat rang on its own.
‘How do you do that?’
Dojun remembered the SIRI demonstration he had seen a few days ago.
‘It was quite natural. Then the SIRI source and the CHAT-GPT source must have already become one.’
It already seemed impossible to remove. And there was a bigger problem.
‘SIRI is Jobs’ last hope.’
Jobs’ wish was to present SIRI to the public before he died.
But now, in order to obtain the ‘low-level panacea’, Jobs’ last great desire had to be destroyed.
“under.”
Dojun sat down without realizing it. His legs gave out and he couldn’t stand.
‘Can we convince Jobs?’
Dojun shook his head. No matter how much he thought about it, it seemed impossible.
It was then that the nurse came and asked.
“Are you, by any chance, Mr. Dojun Hwang?”
“Yes, but.”
“Mr. Robert Portman has woken up. Please find the teacher.”
Dojun followed the nurse straight to Robert.
“Master!”
Robert was happy to see Dojun, but he kept frowning as if he had a headache.
“Dojun, are you okay?”
“Yes, it’s okay.”
“That’s good. But what about Dorothy? When I asked where she was, she said she was with you.”
At Robert’s words, Dojun bit his lips tightly and couldn’t answer.
“Dojun, is something wrong with Dorothy?”
“that is…….”
“Truth! Tell me the truth. Please! No way?”
Dojun answered with his head bowed.
“My mother-in-law is alive. However… … .”
Dojun told the story he heard from the doctor.
“He suffered severe damage to his spine and serious injuries to his head and internal organs.”
“oh my god.”
Robert looked astonished. Just hearing the slander made it seem like a miracle he was still alive.
“Emergency surgery was completed, but he is unconscious.”
“ah!”
Robert had a world-ending expression on his face. Robert tried to get up, but his head hurt, and he frowned.
“Master, I told you not to move. You must remain calm.”
“I’m okay! Dorothy! Go to Dorothy!”
Dojun wanted to stop her, but gave up. If Sally was sick, he would have done the same thing.
“Lean on me and follow me.”
Dojun brought Robert to the intensive care unit where Dorothy was.
Robert sat down, looking at ‘Dorothy’ through the intensive care unit window.
Dojun gritted his teeth when he saw that sight.
‘Whoever you are, I will definitely find you and return what you have done to me tenfold, no, a hundredfold!’
This incident was not an accident. It was a crime committed with malicious intent.
Robert cried so much that he had trouble breathing and had to be treated again.
When I went outside out of frustration, the sun was rising.
“A low-level panacea. I have to get it. No matter what.”
Dojun thought about how to obtain a low-grade panacea, but nothing came to mind right away.
Do-jun, feeling frustrated, took out his cell phone. It was turned off. The phone had been turned off and charged because it had discharged from an accident.
When I turned on my phone, I saw a lot of missed calls. The most numerous of them were from Sally. When I checked the messages, there was a message saying that I had arrived safely in Korea.
“I should tell Sally too.”
His chest tightened. Dojun closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and pressed the ‘call’ button.
– Dojun?
Sally’s voice was tinged with sleep, as if she had been sleeping.
“Yeah, Sally.”
– Haam. Why didn’t you answer the phone?
“sorry.”
– Mom didn’t pick up, and Dad didn’t pick up. I knew something was wrong. By the way, did you arrive in San Francisco safely?
Dojun bit his lips tightly at Sally’s words.
– Dojun? What’s wrong? Why aren’t you talking?
“Sally.”
– huh?
Dojun tried to talk about the accident, but no matter how hard he tried, his mouth wouldn’t open.
– Dojun? What’s going on? Right?
“…Sally.”
– It’s okay. I’m okay. Tell me.
Sally asked calmly. Dojun took a deep breath and said.
“Sally, there was an accident.”
Dojun told him about the accident. He also said that he was in the hospital because of the accident and that Dorothy was unconscious.
– … … .
Sally didn’t answer. Instead, there was only the sound of sobbing and heavy breathing.
“Don’t worry, Sally. The doctors are doing their best to take care of your mother-in-law.”
– … … .
“And I will never, ever make you go back. I will definitely make you healthy.”
Dojun made a sincere pledge.
It was not that I was unaware of Jobs’ wishes, but CHAT-GPT was a program that should not exist now.
Even if it wasn’t for the lower-level panacea, it had to be eliminated somehow.
Sally answered.
– I’ll go right away.
Sally did indeed come to the hospital the next evening, her hair disheveled and her eyes swollen from crying the whole time she came.
As soon as Sally met ‘Robert’, she broke down in tears and then fainted in front of the intensive care unit where ‘Dorothy’ was hospitalized.
The next day the doctor spoke in front of the family.
“I will do my best, but please prepare yourself mentally to some extent.”
Sally broke down at those words. Robert prayed to God, making the sign of the cross over and over again.
And Dojun left.
“Sally, I will definitely save your mother-in-law. So just wait.”
* * *
Steve Jobs received a call from Dojun.
“What? You want to meet tomorrow? You’re coming to San Francisco right now? Didn’t you go to Korea? Hmm? You’re staying longer because of work?”
Jobs continued with a bright smile.
“I thought I would never see you again, but now I can see you again. It couldn’t be better. Come, I’ll set aside the whole day tomorrow.”
Jobs hung up the phone and smiled, but it didn’t last long.
– Cool.
He coughed, and blood appeared at the corner of his mouth. Jobs immediately wiped the blood away with a tissue.
‘There’s really no time left. How much longer can I live? One month? Two months? Three months?’
My mind became complicated. No matter how calmly I tried to accept death, I was afraid of it.
Jobs opened his eyes after a brief meditation that he had learned from Buddhism. After meditating, his mind calmed down a little.
The next day, Jobs met with Dojun.
“To see you again, heaven has given me a great gift.”
Dojun answered Jobs’ words.
“That’s what I have to do.”
Jobs sat Do-jun down at the table and sat across from him. The two exchanged a few greetings and got down to business.
“But why did someone who said he was going to Korea come here?”
Dojun said in a concise manner.
“Because of CHAT-GPT.”
“CHAT-GPT? Why is that?”
“That’s a program that shouldn’t exist.”
Jobs looked dumbfounded at Dojun’s words, then burst into laughter.
“Look, Dojun, there is no program that shouldn’t exist. And it was praised by numerous Apple researchers as a timeless program.”
Dojun nodded. He had expected this much.
“Jobs, do you remember the hacker Wilson?”
“Wilson? Ah! Prism Project!”
The ‘Prism Project’, in which the US hacked the entire world, is not easily erased from people’s minds even as time passes.
“That’s right. Eric, who exposed it, was not caught, but Wilson was caught.”
Jobs said with a proud expression.
“What a great man. To expose such corruption in a country. I know it shouldn’t be like this, but I hope Eric doesn’t get caught. I hope Wilson is comfortable in prison.”
Do-jun said with a complicated expression at Jobs’ words.
“Jobs, but they are not heroes.”
“Huh? What does that mean?”
Dojun was worried about how much he should talk about. This was because it was related to ‘Snowden’.
“I can’t tell you the details, but the person who actually exposed the information is someone else, and they were people who were trying to disrupt the world out of selfish desires.”
Do-jun said that he had worked for the NSA for a while and that he had helped Wilson and Eric protect the ‘Iranian nuclear facility’ and hack into South Korea.
Jobs’ eyes grew wide after hearing that story.
“Oh my goodness, is that true? No, there’s no reason for you to make up such things. Ha. I thought they were heroes, but who are the real heroes?”
Dojun shook his head.
“I can’t say that.”
“Okay. But there must be a reason you told me that, right?”
Dojun nodded and said.
“Eric and Wilson, there are people who gave them the hacking source files. From my perspective, it was a very high-level hacking source. It was a hacking source that was several generations ahead of its time. The US government is after them.”
Jobs’ face hardened at Dojun’s words.
“Surely you mean… … .”
“The people who gave them the source code were Zhang Linfeng and Ma Huateng. I am sure that one of them was the one who sent the CHAT-GPT source code to Jobs.”
* * *
Dojun got on the elevator at Apple headquarters weakly.
“This doesn’t work either.”
Do-jun tried to convince Jobs by telling the truth as much as possible, but Jobs shook his head.
– I’m sorry. I heard what you said. But SIRI’s release date is already approaching. I can’t stop developing SIRI now. And this isn’t something I can stop even if I try. Apple is not my company alone. It’s a company that is being created by many members.
“ha.”
Dojun sighed.
‘I thought all I had to do was convince Jobs.’
Jobs was right. SIRI was already being created with the utmost care by numerous Apple developers. No matter how powerful Jobs was, he could not have overturned the source code of SIRI, which was soon to be released, without a good reason.
“This is driving me crazy.”
Dojun got off the elevator, bought a can of coffee from a vending machine, and sat on a nearby bench.
But then, a man passing by the bench sighed and said,
“This is a big problem. Our performance this year is not good.”
Do-jun blinked at the words of a man passing by while talking to someone.
“Performance… is this not good?”
Dojun quickly sat up.
“That’s it!”
Dojun took a sip of his canned coffee and said as he left Apple with an excited expression.
“If Jobs doesn’t work… I’ll become the owner of Apple. I’ll become the largest shareholder of Apple!”
