Episode 311 Lee Woon-cheol’s Determination
Robert Portman was waiting in one of the offices of the North Korean State Affairs Commission.
‘I came all the way to North Korea thanks to having a really great son-in-law.’
Robert originally intended to retire from politics when his wife Dorothy became paralyzed from the waist down.
Of course, I was worried about how I would make a living after that, but I had saved up money, and thanks to my son-in-law Do-jun, I had bought a few stocks and they turned out to be a huge success, so I thought I would be able to live without worrying about money.
‘I just wanted to live happily ever after listening to Dorothy’s advice, but that didn’t work out.’
Dorothy got up from her wheelchair. Robert was so surprised that he collapsed on the floor for a moment.
The hospital did an MRI of Dorothy’s back and said it was a miracle. All of her injuries had healed. They said that with rehabilitation training, she could be completely back to normal.
Robert hugged Dorothy and cried, saying it was a miracle.
Just as the doctor said, after a few days, Dorothy no longer needed a wheelchair. And that wasn’t all. Dorothy started getting younger.
Even if it was a miracle, this was a bit strange. Robert was smart enough to be a member of the House of Representatives, and he felt there was a reason for Dorothy’s change.
‘Dojun… there’s no one else but him.’
Although he didn’t know how, Dojun seemed to have cured Dorothy and made her younger. Judging from her expression, Dorothy seemed to know why, but Robert didn’t bother to ask.
Because I was happy enough now.
“It’s time. Let’s go in.”
As Robert laughed absentmindedly, the stern North Korean official said:
“All right.”
Robert swallowed dryly as he walked down the hallway. Even though he had been through a lot, he couldn’t help but be nervous about meeting Kim Jong-un.
Robert entered the conference room.
“Welcome.”
Contrary to expectations, Kim Jong-un approached and greeted him brightly. But Robert did not let his guard down.
Because I knew full well how much blood had been shed since Kim Jong-un came to power.
“This is Robert Portman, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.”
Robert greeted me politely and took his seat. The meeting began as usual.
They talked about each other’s well-being and North American relations. The main topic came about 10 minutes into the meeting.
“Is it because of Mr. Kenneth Bae that you came as a special envoy?”
Robert nodded at Kim Jong-un’s words.
“you’re right.”
“The person was arrested by the North Korean authorities on charges of subversive activities through religious activities.”
“I know. But… I think there was a misunderstanding.”
Kim Jong-un answered with a stern expression.
“Are you saying that our republic has made a wrong decision now?”
Robert flinched at Kim Jong-un’s shouting, but Robert was also a man who had been through a lot.
“No. The United States respects North Korea’s ruling. However, Kenneth Bae is an American citizen, so we ask that you be a little more considerate. Since we live in different cultures, isn’t it possible that there may be misunderstandings about his actions?”
“When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”
“Of course. But wouldn’t Rome be flexible? If it’s a misunderstanding, couldn’t it be resolved through compensation?”
“compensation?”
Robert felt it was time to pull out the cards he had prepared.
“I heard that they are building a children’s hospital in North Korea.”
Kim Jong-un nodded.
“I didn’t want to accept it, but I accepted it because South Korea said they would.”
“We, the United States, will provide support to that hospital. We will also provide medicine and food.”
Kim Jong-un’s eyes lit up. Medicine and food were in dire shortage in North Korea.
Besides, once they came in, it was up to him to decide where to use them.
Kim Jong-un thought for a moment and then said.
“Medicine and food… That’s okay. But there are many other children’s hospitals in the Republic besides the one in Kaesong. Can you support those too?”
Robert’s eyes lit up. In North Korea, there was only one children’s hospital being built in Kaesong. But Robert didn’t say anything else.
“It is possible to some extent. Of course, it will be through the UN, not direct support from the US.”
Kim Jong-un laughed. It didn’t matter whether it was the UN or somewhere else. What was important was that they were providing support without saying they would interfere.
‘If the food supply increases, we can provide it to the military right away.’
“Okay, I’ll accept it. This time, when you go, I’ll make sure you can return home with Mr. Kenneth Bae.”
Robert smiled brightly.
Because I completed the mission I received from US President Obama.
‘This is all thanks to Dojun.’
Originally, this meeting was impossible. North Korea did not welcome the meeting, but it was mainly because of China.
‘China would never have let the US and North Korea get closer, so how did they do it?’
According to American intelligence sources in China, Xi Jinping has come forward and said he supports talks between the US and North Korea.
‘To be exact, it was a meeting between Hwang Do-jun and Kim Jong-un, but Do-jun said that he was a citizen of the Republic of Korea and that if he was not qualified, he would have handed it over to us.’
The result was this meeting.
‘With this, Obama will have the justification to save the American people from North Korea. His approval rating will go up. He will owe a big debt to Do-jun.’
The meeting, which had been a give-and-take, was ending on a good note.
“Is there anything else you need?”
Robert said one thing in response to Kim Jong-un’s words.
“Yes. I think I need to go back to the US and show the UN that this aid is really being used for children.”
Kim Jong-un frowned.
“You don’t trust me?”
“No. How could we not trust you, Chairman? But we need something to show you.”
“What do you want?”
“People are weak towards children, especially children with serious illnesses. If the children being treated were seriously ill, wouldn’t they agree?”
Kim Jong-un’s frowning face brightened up again at those words. The request was so simple.
“Haha. Of course.”
Kim Jong-un immediately asked for the list of patients to be treated. However, when he saw the list, Kim Jong-un’s face frowned.
Kim Jong-un spoke to his younger sister Kim Yo-jong with a stern expression.
“Why are the children being treated diagnosed with these diseases? Flu? Athlete’s foot?”
Kim Yo-jong answered with a puzzled expression.
“I will look into it again and report back to you.”
“Yes, we focus on children who need proper treatment.”
“All right.”
Kim Jong-un spoke again to Kim Yo-jong, who was about to leave.
“And… check why the list is like this.”
“yes!”
The list was revised that evening. Robert returned to the United States the next day with the revised list and ‘Kenneth Bae’.
* * *
Do-jun explained to Lee Woon-chul how he changed the ‘treatment list’.
After hearing Do-jun’s explanation, Lee Woon-cheol was impressed, but had one question.
[But there is something I still don’t understand. How did that rumor… cause China to have a meeting with Representative Hwang, or rather, the US and North Korea?]
Dojun smiled brightly.
‘That’s because the Shi Huang AI is trying to use me to somehow change history.’
That was the truth, but I couldn’t answer like that.
[There are people in China who are interested in me. I think they thought I would be in trouble if I met Kim Jong-un.]
[Ah! Now I understand. So China pressured North Korea to hold a meeting with you, but you backed out because you are Korean and put the United States first.]
Dojun was impressed by Lee Wooncheol’s answer.
‘He’s definitely smart. He analyzes the situation right away.’
[Similar.]
[You are truly amazing. You changed the situation, moved America, and changed the treatment list with just one rumor.]
[I was lucky.]
[Luck, huh? This is all the result of the representative’s actions. Thank you. The representative saved my son.]
Although it was a message that showed no emotion, Do-jun was able to read the emotions in Lee Woon-cheol’s response.
[When will your child be admitted to the hospital?]
[I’ll do it tomorrow.]
[I heard that cancer treatment is very difficult. Please be sure to watch over me.]
Lee Woon-cheol didn’t answer for a long time. But Do-jun seemed to hear what Lee Woon-cheol was saying.
Lee Yun-cheol left his last message about five minutes later.
[I will never forget this favor. I will continue to help CEO Hwang Do-jun as much as I can.]
Lee Yun-cheol left the chat room. As the chat room disappeared, all the messages exchanged up to that point disappeared.
‘This messenger is really good for secret chats. In some ways, it’s even better than Telegram.’
The ‘CAT LINE’ created by Lee Woon-chul and improved by Do-jun shocked the world.
In fact, while people wanted to have free conversations, they were very sensitive about the content of their conversations being leaked out.
Especially politicians and celebrities. People in the business world, there were so many people who wanted to have secret conversations.
In the midst of all this, people who wanted to have a secret conversation applauded the release of ‘CAT LINE’.
Dojun left the office.
‘Is it all over now?’
A children’s hospital was being built in Sangam-dong, and a children’s hospital was also being built in North Korea.
Although it was not my intention, I happened to acquire shares of ‘Supercell’ and, more than anything, I was able to block contact between ‘Lee Yun-cheol’ and China.
It was to prevent ‘Lee Yun-cheol’ from staging a coup d’état under China’s instructions, as in the lost dream.
‘At this rate, Lee Yun-cheol won’t stage a coup in this life, right? Then what’s left is the Emperor Shi Huang AI?’
Dojun asked Saetbyeol.
“Morning Star, how about the black tree?”
Dojun clenched both his fists. It was exactly what Dojun wanted.
“So, is it back to how it was before?”
“Oh. I remember. You said about half, right?”
Dojun tilted his head.
‘The power of the black tree has weakened?’
In reality, the Emperor Shi Huang’s AI had eaten some of the pieces of destiny and become weaker, but Do-jun didn’t know that.
“Hmm. That’s right. How weak has it become? Did you ask Copycat to try to scratch the black tree?”
Saetbyul told ‘Copycat’ to attack the black tree. Dojun ‘linked’ with Copycat and looked forward.
Dojun saw Copycat’s claws scratching the black tree. The black tree was dug up. The dented parts turned into smoke and rose into the sky. However, little by little, the dented parts were filled in.
‘That’s too bad. If Copycat had just a little more power, she could have dug in. If Copycat levels up, wouldn’t she be able to dig into the black tree? Then, if she goes back to the Emperor’s AI, she might be able to finish him off.’
Dojun began to think carefully about how to level up Copycat.
* * *
After finishing his conversation with Do-jun, Lee Un-cheol took the train from Sinuiju to Gaeseong. The train was slow, so it took all day.
The Kaesong Children’s Hospital, which was remodeled from an existing building, looked very stylish.
‘This looks like the best hospital in North Korea?’
Lee Yun-cheol entered the hospital room on the third floor.
“Hyunjin-ah.”
My son, who started chemotherapy, lost all his hair. He was already thin, but his bones were visible.
“dad!”
Lee Woon-cheol, whose heart ached at the sound of his son’s broken voice, carefully held Hyun-jin’s hand.
“Is it very difficult?”
“… It’s okay. Dad. I can get treatment now, right?”
“Yes. If you get this treatment, you’ll be fine.”
Hyunjin smiled awkwardly and then asked.
“Yeah, I got it.”
After a while, Hyun-jin said she was sleepy. Lee Woon-chul came outside after seeing Hyun-jin sleeping.
But there were a lot of people gathered at the entrance of the ‘Children’s Hospital’.
A mother was carrying her child in a sling and waking him up.
“Teacher, please cure my child. Please!”
Lee Yun-cheol looked at the child. The child looked as skinny as his own child. It was obvious that the child had become sick from not eating.
“Come in! Where is this place?”
The guard chased the mother away. She fell to the floor. But she got up again and begged and begged again.
Lee Woon-cheol tried to ignore the sight and went to a nearby lodging. Lee Woon-cheol came to see Hyun-jin again the next day.
Lee Woon-cheol, who was about to leave the hospital after seeing Hyun-jin being treated, was shocked.
There were more people in front of the hospital than yesterday. They were all holding the child’s hand in one hand and trying to enter the hospital.
“Please save my child. The doctor said he can’t cure her. He said we have to come here to cure my child.”
A grandfather held his grandson’s hand and pleaded.
There were more than one or two people like that. Lee Woon-cheol couldn’t bear to look at them any longer, so he passed them and escaped.
That was when.
“mister.”
I heard a child’s voice. I turned my head and saw a boy who looked to be about 10 years old. He looked just like my son, Hyunjin.
The boy was standing next to him, holding the hand of a girl who looked to be about seven years old.
“You just got out of the hospital, right?”
“…okay.”
“They say that if you come to this hospital, all your illnesses will be cured. Is that true?”
“It won’t be all diseases.”
“Then, what about this disease?”
The child held out his younger sister’s hand. Lee Woon-cheol gritted his teeth. The child’s younger sister’s hand was rotting away.
“I had a wound, and the old lady next door said that applying soybean paste would help it get better, but it didn’t get better.”
“I should have gone to the hospital.”
“I didn’t have any money… … .”
Officially, hospitals in North Korea were free. But the reality was different. Only medical treatment was free, and patients had to buy medicine. Since tests like X-rays required electricity, patients had to pay for electricity.
‘There’s no way these kids have that kind of money.’
Seeing that they came alone, it seemed like their parents weren’t there either.
Lee Yun-cheol gritted his teeth.
‘If only it had been treated well from the beginning, it wouldn’t have been anything.’
His heart was heavy. Lee Woon-chul took out the candy he had brought for Hyun-jin from his pocket and handed it out to the children.
“I’m sorry. I’m not a doctor, so I don’t know. But, not just anyone can enter this hospital.”
“Then how can I get in?”
“Well… … .”
If you had a high rank, you could get in. But Lee Woon-cheol couldn’t bring himself to say that.
“Sir, can you spare my little brother? Please! I brought the money too.”
The child took out a dollar from his pocket and gave it to Lee Woon-chul, who had not found it anywhere.
It was obvious how much trouble a 10-year-old had to go through to save one dollar.
“I’m sorry. Sir… there’s really nothing I can do for you.”
Lee Woon-cheol ran away from the children. Lee Woon-cheol ran. It was because he thought the children would chase him.
After running for a while, Lee Woon-chul looked back. He saw the children who had been kicked out and collapsed at the hospital entrance.
Lee Yun-cheol bit his lip until it bled.
‘This country… is wrong.’
On the way back up to Pyongyang, I saw North Korean residents living a difficult life.
‘Are there no people in this country who are for the people? Are there no people with such abilities? In South Korea, food rots when it’s left over, but can’t we?’
Lee Woon-cheol thought of Do-jun.
He was one of the richest men in the world and was a leader in information and communication technology. Not only that, he also had tremendous political power and could control China and North Korea with a single word.
‘Isn’t someone like Comrade Hwang Do-jun what North Korea needs right now? If so, wouldn’t he be able to change North Korea?’
With every step I took, I thought of the people in front of the ‘Children’s Hospital’.
I remembered the dollar the child had tried to hand me.
‘If it’s CEO Hwang Do-jun… wouldn’t he be able to save everyone without running away like me?’
This thought continued until I arrived at the office in Pyongyang.
Lee Un-cheol saw the pictures of ‘Kim Jong-il and Kim Jong-un’ erected in ‘Kim Il-sung Square’ in Pyongyang.
‘What we need isn’t those two guys… Isn’t it Comrade Hwang Do-jun?’
The more I thought about it, the more I felt that it was true.
It started to rain. But Lee Un-cheol stood in the square, getting rained on, and looked at the pictures of ‘Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-un.’
And after a few hours, Lee Yun-cheol clenched his fists.
‘I’ve finally found the path I need to take. I need to change North Korea. No, I’m going to change North Korea. Not the hell it is now. I need to change it to a place like South Korea, where everyone can eat well and receive treatment. I need to start a coup d’état… no, a revolution.’
A method also came to mind. It seemed that by using Bitcoin, it would be possible to recruit the generals and North Korean officials to stage a ‘coup’.
Even if it was impossible for others, he felt he could see all of North Korea’s confidential information.
‘Of course it will take a long time. But it won’t take that long. But the problem is money… ‘
Although he had a lot of money now, it would disappear quickly if he moved for the grand plan. At that moment, Lee Woon-cheol opened his eyes wide.
‘Wait a minute, didn’t Comrade Hwang Do-jun say that he would give a portion of the profits from ‘CAT LINE’ in Bitcoin every year?’
Then all problems were solved. Bitcoin was still increasing in value every day.
Lee Yun-cheol looked up at the rain-filled sky and spoke softly.
“Comrade Hwang Do-jun! I have decided. I will start a revolution. I don’t know if I will succeed, but if I do, you will become our leader.”
