Episode 68. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)
Robert Patterson is a CIA agent.
CIA field agents can be broadly divided into two types: resident agents and dispatched agents.
Resident agents are literally agents who reside locally, and are usually chosen because they have an appearance that suits the location they are stationed at.
The dispatched agent acts as a bridge between the resident agent and the U.S. headquarters.
Although they do not come into direct contact with resident agents, their main job is to contact them through safe houses and the like to deliver or retrieve items.
In some cases, they are treated as odd jobs because they help with local missions or take on work on the mainland.
And Robert was one of those dispatched agents.
He is currently at DARPA headquarters to work on CIA-DARPA collaboration.
To be honest, I think that anyone can do this kind of domestic work, but I’m not that dissatisfied.
It may be annoying, but I think it’s much better than going abroad and suffering.
Beep.
Robert entered the facility after passing through security screening procedures.
The office Robert is currently visiting is a place that handles special projects within DARPA and currently maintains the highest security level.
As I entered the lab, I saw the back of a researcher who was deeply absorbed in his research.
“Ahem!… .”
Robert coughed and made noises, but she seemed completely oblivious.
“Doctor!”
When I called him with the title of Doctor, he only turned around. He was a researcher much older than Robert.
“Oh! Oh no. Just wait a minute. It’ll be over soon.”
How many minutes did I wait standing there?
“I’m sorry. I had something to finish.”
“He told me to get the report.”
Robert spoke first without saying hello.
“Oh! Right. I had to write a report… .”
The doctor mutters to himself with an embarrassed expression, as if he had forgotten.
“But as you can see, I’m the only researcher in the office. The report hasn’t been written yet.”
Come to think of it, I don’t see any other researchers.
It’s not a huge lab, but it’s not small enough for one person to do research on their own either.
“Where did the originally formed personnel go?”
As far as he knew, the initial deployment was definitely not of this scale. He wanted to just deal with it and leave, but he had to investigate how things came to this.
“That’s because… I was reassigned to the lab next door.”
“Isn’t the lab next door the lab in charge of the same special project?”
“Well… that’s right.”
The doctor reluctantly nods.
However, the only research currently being conducted as a special project is android research being conducted jointly with the Ministry of National Defense.
“So you’re saying that it went to the Android Research Lab under the Department of Defense? That android was airlifted by our CIA.”
“Of course… .”
“How can you let research personnel leave without prior notice and permission?”
They had been begging for androids themselves, and had even managed to procure two from Afghanistan. In fact, it was Robert himself who had received them and brought them back.
“I’m sorry about this.”
“I will make sure to report this matter clearly to headquarters.”
The doctor smiled awkwardly at Robert’s firm words.
“Hehehe… You seem to be a more patriotic person than you think.”
“I would say it is not charity, but patriotism.”
In the bleak atmosphere, the doctor opened his mouth with difficulty.
“Then, would you like to hear a verbal report? I will explain to you as much as I can about the matters requested by the CIA.”
“… Let’s do that.”
Robert wasn’t entirely pleased with the way these DARPA researchers worked, but it wasn’t his place to judge.
“Come this way.”
Inside, an android that had already been disassembled for a long time came into view.
An android with a human appearance that even Robert himself was skeptical about. However, when taken apart, it was clearly a robot.
“First of all, let me tell you the conclusion… I think we should structurally assume that the communication equipment verification you requested was completely non-existent.”
Robert didn’t answer, but took a notebook out of his pocket and began to write it down.
-No communication equipment whatsoever.
One thing the CIA was most interested in was information about whether androids were communicating wirelessly with the outside world.
“However, there are quite a few organs whose exact function is difficult to determine.”
After hearing that, Robert glanced at the doctor and started writing notes again. He crossed out the sentence he had previously written by drawing a double line through it.
– Claims that there is no communication equipment whatsoever.
-However, there are many parts whose purpose has not been confirmed.
“It’s really amazing. Although it looks like this, it has a very similar shape to the human body structure.”
The doctor looked over the dismantled android as if he were examining an ancient masterpiece.
“Take a look at this.”
The doctor showed Robert what appeared to be artificial muscles from the android that had been taken out.
“This new muscle material is really fantastic. It’s almost as if it was made to be muscle.”
If it was developed to create artificial muscles, wouldn’t that be possible?
Robert thought to himself.
“It’s basically a similar structure to graphene, but the argentum element between the crystal structures creates free electrons. These free electrons cannot pass through the crystal structure walls, but only move vertically between the argentum layers. And this is the result.”
As the doctor, who had been giving a difficult-to-understand explanation, turned on the power and increased the current, the artificial muscle contracted instantly.
“All you have to do is apply voltage to both ends of this new material. Isn’t that amazing?”
The doctor asked Robert with a slightly burdened expression, as if asking for his sympathy.
Robert asked back, averting his eyes.
“So, is it possible to secure production technology?”
“Ah! Right. Production technology. Hmm… I think we can make a similar crystal structure by modifying graphene or carbon compounds. If we’re lucky. But the next step is important. Next, we have to extract the silver one by one. Like spinning thread on a spinning wheel. The thickness is the amount of one element. Then, we plant them one by one into the crystal structure of the modified carbon compound. How is that?”
“…Are you saying that we can make it like that?”
The doctor’s face, which had been asking with a playful expression, crumpled.
“What? Are you serious? Of course it’s impossible!”
“… … .”
The doctor shook his head and pointed to other parts.
“Do you see this in the center? It’s the battery area, and this is a bit tricky. So it’s going to take some time.”
Next to the Android was a PDC battery, which is currently used in electric vehicles, but it was larger than the one shown in the PDC advertisement.
It wouldn’t be a bad thing if the battery was the size of a document, but it would be better to make it a little bigger and have more power capacity.
“My guess is that Android batteries and the batteries of the PDCs on the market are a bit different. The analysis is not yet complete.”
Android was very difficult to import because all of its devices were assigned an identification number.
On the other hand, batteries supplied for electric vehicles were relatively easier to obtain, but the problem was that their structure was difficult to understand.
“There are certainly similarities, but there are a few things that are just plain strange about the battery that came out for this vehicle. It also doesn’t seem like a completely meaningless structure, so it seems like a thorough analysis is needed.”
“Okay, you can do whatever you want with that part. How did the hacking risk investigation go?”
“Oh, come to think of it, that must have been the priority.”
The doctor placed his hand on the android’s head and opened the face cover, revealing the android’s head.
“Ta-da!”
The doctor points to the center of the head with his hand.
Although it had a rather complex structure, the part that was thought to be the brain appeared to be smaller than a human fist.
“It’s a lot smaller than you think. In fact, this part of the brain that we’re assuming is one of the parts that we haven’t figured out yet. Even the lab next door probably doesn’t know anything about it. Well, since it’s quite similar to the human body structure, we can guess that this part acts as a computer, but it’s too small and strange for that.”
The doctor looked at the area with the most serious expression he had ever seen.
Robert looked at that area and it felt quite strange.
It was a strange feeling, as if I was being sucked into it. As if there was a bigger space beyond that small part.
widely!
Just when it seemed as if Robert was about to fall into something, the doctor put the lid back on his head.
“Well, since it’s not a typical computer architecture, there’s nothing to worry about there.”
The only thing they were worried about was the software security verification issues the CIA was requesting.
The US government has instructed us to find out whether it is reliable enough to be used.
“But since there are quite a few parts whose uses are difficult to determine, I’m not sure if it’s possible to compromise security in the PDC. I’m not sure… .”
The doctor ended his speech without saying anything further.
“Are you done with the explanation?”
“Yes, I think I’ve explained all the essential parts. If I had to add something… I would say that it doesn’t look like it was made by humans? Haha, I don’t think that would happen.”
It doesn’t look like it was made by humans… .
“Hmm… Okay, I see.”
Robert turned away as if he had nothing more to hear.
“I won’t go far~”
As Robert was about to leave, he looked back at the doctor as if he had forgotten something.
“Then there are no documents at all that can be delivered?”
The doctor just shrugs his shoulders without answering.
Robert had no choice but to pack up and leave the lab.
As he left the lab, several researchers from the lab next door were also coming out in a group.
They appeared to be researchers working on a special project for the Department of Defense.
Those unlucky guys.
I thought it was nothing serious because they told me to just come and get the documents, but because of them, I ended up getting cursed at every time I went in.
Actually, it wasn’t the researchers’ fault, but he needed an excuse now.
As I was walking, my mind wandering, I noticed that Robert was standing in front of his car.
Crunch.
I opened the car door and fell into the driver’s seat.
“Hoo~”
Robert sighed and took a cigarette out of his pocket.
Of course, Android was a huge hit in the United States as well.
However, PDC has not yet promoted private sales in many countries, citing supply issues.
Although Android has not been officially imported, the country itself is reviewing it and is in the process of doing so.
Even though the Android military is in a hurry, do they really plan to be this lethal?
I understand the Ministry of National Defense’s circumstances, but isn’t it too much to have just one researcher?
Robert put a cigarette in his mouth and calmly organized what he had heard from the doctor.
“Damn. I have to go overseas again next week… I can’t rest comfortably.”
I started the engine again, spitting out useless worries.
